repress - Often the best music gets made when people get out of their comfort
zone and venture into new territory. That is what I felt listening to these
tracks from Ukrainian veteran Alexander Pavlenko. He has a long history in
drum 'n bass as Sunchase, and as Na Nich, you might have heard him on Rhythm
Buro or Semantica, but this release reveals another side of him that we
haven't heard before. The Karpati EP kicks off with "Manipulation".
A rolling sub and punchy drums propel the track's momentum forward and make
it dancefloor-ready. The sounds on top take inspiration from multiple genres
for a track that finds a perfect balance between the deeper sides of both
house and techno. Next up is "Still There", a stripped deep house
tune where filtered percussion, pads and vocals alternate each other, flowing
in and out of focus. Title track "Karpati", a hypnotic techno
track, takes inspiration from the mountain region in western Ukraine, the
melody reflecting a similar beauty as the Carpathian nature. Add Na Nich's
expert sound design on top, and the result is a deep and captivating trip.
"Morning Habit" rounds up the EP by slowing things down for a
dubbed out house cut. Chords playfully bounce over the beat for a tune
suitable for either the early or very late mornings |

repress - Bakey has been smashing out hit after hit this year, sharing beats
cooked up with his brother, Breaka and collabing with Bristol head Sam Binga.
The young producer comes back to Time Is Now, following up the best-seller
Take It Further EP from last year with a tasty five tracker of UKG
experimentation. Title track, "Bring It Back", uses a playful sound
palette of 00s grime that swirls into a hardcore onslaught of breaks,
bassline and screeching ruffage, kicking of the record with a statement.
Manchester vocalist Slay joins the party on "Vibing Season",
building up in long atmospheric chords before Slay's bars spiral into play,
pacey, dirty and clever over explosive glitches and ear candy pops. Bringing
it right back down to minimalism with sparing two-step, "No Name
Groove" features Kasia's soulful piano echoing throughout with
call-and-response sampling, a classy take on early garage tracks. On

After Mani Festo's last contribution to our techno-oriented
Basement Tracks series, a sequel was a no-brainer. It's no exaggeration to
say that over the last couple of years the DJ, producer and label boss has
become widely recognised as one of the UK's most exciting techno artists,
given his easily identifiable sound, each release just as bold and
hard-hitting as the last - this one included. Synkron EP boasts Mani Festo's
ability to create raw, industrial electronics which never sacrifice movement
nor swing. Each track is crafted with a precise direction, some via

Matti Turunen is probably best known for his work as Morphology
(with Michael Diekmann) but here he goes it alone for a new EP on Cultivated
Electronics vinyl-only series, Cultivated Electronics Ltd. Finnish electronic
maestro, Turunen's previous solo ventures without his Morphology cohort are
rare. The last time was a track for AC Records in 2013 (which was remastered

"This
album was going to be Joyce’s international breakthrough release… but it
never came out…" - Wax Poetics. Not long after the dawn of her career,
as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro, Joyce was declared "one of the greatest
singers" by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Yet despite reputable accolades and
the fact that she has since recorded over thirty acclaimed albums, Joyce
never quite achieved the international recognition of the likes of Jobim,
João Gilberto and Sergio Mendes, all of whom became global stars after
releasing with major labels in the US. There was a moment when it seemed she
might be on the cusp of an international breakthrough. While living in New
York, Joyce was approached by the great German producer Claus Ogerman.
Ogerman had already played a pivotal role in the development and
popularisation of Brazilian music in the 1960s, recording with some of the
all-time greats like Jobim and João Gilberto, as well as North American idols
like Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Bill Evans. "I met him in New
York City, in 1977", recalls Joyce. "I was living and playing
there, and João Palma, Brazilian drummer who used to play with Jobim,
introduced me to Claus. We had an audition, he liked what we were doing and
decided to produce an album with us." Featuring fellow Brazilian
musicians Mauricio Maestro (who wrote/co-wrote four of the songs), Nana
Vasconcelos and Tutty Moreno, and some of the most in-demand stateside
players including Michael Brecker, Joe Farrell and Buster Williams, the
recordings for Natureza took place at Columbia Studios and Ogerman produced
the album, provided the arrangements and conducted the orchestra. But
mysteriously, Natureza was never released, and what should have been Joyce's
big moment never happened. As Joyce remembers, "I returned home, but
Claus and I remained in contact, by letters and phone calls. He was very
enthusiastic about the album and tried to hook me up with Michael Franks. He
wanted me to go back to NYC in order to re-record the vocals in English with
new lyrics, which I actually wasn't too happy about. But then I got pregnant
with my third child and could not leave Brazil. And little by little our
contact became rare, until I lost track of him completely. And that was it. I
never heard from him again." While Claus was known to be something of an
elusive character, the album's disappearance might also have been a result of
timing. The Brazilian craze was coming to an end, making way for disco and
new wave at the end of the seventies, and Ogerman struggled to find a major
label interested in a new Brazilian sensation. Additionally, as Joyce
mentions, it wasn't quite finished. Ogerman wanted to add finishing touches
to the mix and to record alternative English lyrics for the US and

Records is an independent record label and multidisciplinary platform founded
by Gent Gjonbalaj. Operating from Prishtina, Kosovo, the imprint publishes
hypnotic compositions of various forms, exploring the realms of electronic
music and beyond. The label's debut release marks the birth of an initiative
started several years ago, reflecting on a process of growth, research and
refinement. Conceived as a foundation record, the 'Classics' EP demonstrates
Vargmal's concept and overall spirit. The Italian pioneer Leo Anibaldi
inaugurates the label featuring two cuts on the A-side, originally produced
in the early 1990s--'Muta 5' and an as yet unheard version of 'Endurance
4'--replete with Anibaldi's signature sound programming and high-octane output.
On the flip, the torch is passed to another Italian master, Donato Dozzy, who
takes them to another level with his peculiar and precise remix treatment.
Where Anibaldi paves the way for a possible future, Dozzy applies a modern
touch to the same fundamental approach--a balancing act that shows a spectrum
within the conceptual framework from two different points in the continuum,
transcending any individual style or place in time. Selected by their ability
to extract the full potentiality of the sound, the tracks on this release
reflect a minimalist approach that is inherently resourceful and discerning,
whilst maximizing effect and impact. The efficiency of the sound can be heard
in the stripped-back elements, practical arrangement and execution of the
creative idea. 'Muta 5' opens the EP, a throbbing mass of pressure cooker
action, continuously building tension with rippling percussion lines and
syncopated beats. Ahead of its time in 1993, 'Muta 5' has a raw, driving
energy and commanding authority. Dozzy reworks it into a tighter, linear
forma--whilst retaining the angst of the original, he applies new synth
motifs and notches the speed down for extra poise. 'Endurance 4' (Version II)
is a tribal workout with hallmarks of the classic Italian deep techno sound.
With arching drones, chugging rhythms and dramatic narratives, 'Endurance 4'
presents an idiosyncratic style and emotive character which later became the
model for this sound. Dozzy's hypnotic faculty shines through on the remix, a
polished re-run that elaborates on the ominous melodic theme, and lifts the
sound majestically to a gliding altitude--marking the end of this record and
the beginning of Vargmal's journey |

Where Anibaldi paves the way for a possible future, Dozzy applies a modern
touch to the same fundamental approach--a balancing act that shows a spectrum
within the conceptual framework from two different points in the continuum,
transcending any individual style or place in time. Selected by their ability
to extract the full potentiality of the sound, the tracks on this release
reflect a minimalist approach that is inherently resourceful and discerning,
whilst maximizing effect and impact. The efficiency of the sound can be heard
in the stripped-back elements, practical arrangement and execution of the
creative idea. 'Muta 5' opens the EP, a throbbing mass of pressure cooker
action, continuously building tension with rippling percussion lines and
syncopated beats. Ahead of its time in 1993, 'Muta 5' has a raw, driving
energy and commanding authority. Dozzy reworks it into a tighter, linear
forma--whilst retaining the angst of the original, he applies new synth
motifs and notches the speed down for extra poise. 'Endurance 4' (Version II)
is a tribal workout with hallmarks of the classic Italian deep techno sound.
With arching drones, chugging rhythms and dramatic narratives, 'Endurance 4'
presents an idiosyncratic style and emotive character which later became the
model for this sound. Dozzy's hypnotic faculty shines through on the remix, a
polished re-run that elaborates on the ominous melodic theme, and lifts the
sound majestically to a gliding altitude--marking the end of this record and

For Balmat's fourth release, we
turn our attention close to home: to the Mallorca-born, Barcelona- based
artist Nueen, aka Nacho Pezzati. Nueen has been developing his highly
personal style of blissfully Balearic ambient over the past few years, with
releases on labels like Quiet Time Tapes and Good Morning Tapes. On Diagrams
of Thought, he explores new depths in his sound. His atmospheres remain
bucolic, butthere's a disturbance at work, a hint of uncertainty swirling
beneath seemingly placid pads. While Diagrams of Thought retains the ambient
(or at least ambient-adjacent) focus of all Balmat's releases so far, the
album also marks new frontiers for the label; the album's first half is
graceful and largely beatless, but the mood grows murkier with the foggy
drones of "Dome" and the intimations of liquid drum 'n' bass on
"Maxima"; "Veta," meanwhile, might just represent the
most forceful rhythm to appear on a Balmat release yet. Limited supplies.

Legions is four experienced space cadets from the Antwerp interstellar
legion, led by Captain Andrew Claes (STUFF., BRZZVLL, Internal Sun). With a
sound rooted in jazz, improv, hip-hop, dub and electronic music, brace
yourself for an intergalactic trip through colourful musical worlds and allow
yourself to be carried away to indefinable, otherworldly but always
hospitable beacons. Alongside Claes, the delegates on duty are all heroes
from the Allied star: Bram Weijters (Raymond Van Het Groenewoud, Crazy Men),
Klaas De Somer (Tourist Lemc, Selah Sue) and Fre Madou (ex-DAAU, Namid). With
them, come stories and artifacts from the multidimensional cosmos to our
beloved mother planet Earth and this autumn, they passionately present their
first omnibus 'Stellar Legions', released 21st October via the
groove-obssessed Sdban Ultra label. The album consists of eight tracks
recorded in the studio and live, resulting in one big cosmic experience that
exhilarates down to every last arrangement. From Claes' twisted sax on the
semi-electronic ecstatic dream world that is an 'An Arp in Tunisia' to the
jazzy snatches of 'Wessel' where De Somer's hurried drum patterns and
Weijters frenzied keyboard solos catch light, Stellar Legions unites the
adventure and improvisation of jazz with contemporary sounds. At the core of
the Stellar Legions sound is a rhythm section Sly & Robbie would have
approved of: loose and sticky, grinding and unwinding: De Somer's drums fizz
with expectation while the relentless bass strokes from Madou provide the
beating pulse. It's fresh, it's raw and it keeps us listening, grooving and
wanting more. Elsewhere, 'Odyssey' is a cataclysmic mix of feverish sounds
and melodies that take you to an extra-terrestrial place, while the live
recording of 'Alcyone', basks in a spatial mix of futuristic grooves and
ethereal soundscapes before album closer 'Covix', results in a spacious and
wonderfully atmospheric affair. Electronics wizard Andrew Claes has recorded
music in a wide range of styles ranging from free jazz outfit Chaos of the
Haunted Spire (duo with Teun Verbruggen) to techno icon Marco Bailey and New
Wave hero, Marcel Vanthilt. In addition, he has collaborated with Zach
Danziger, Zap Mama, Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Hermes Ensemble, Mauro
Pawlowski, Josse De Pauw and many others and released music with the
electro-jazz collective AAN/EOP and his solo project, Internal Sun. Claes is
also a teacher of 'Live Electronics' at the Conservatory of Antwerp and a
doctorate in the arts, where he is currently investigating the possibilities
of an electro-acoustic saxophone. He also regularly gives workshops on the
Belgian synthesizer microcontroller platform, Axoloti. His latest achievement
is AI-driven robot-jazz project 'BotBop' with Dago Sondervan and Kasper
Jordaens, which explores the possibilities and limits of 'computer aided

reverberations unfold. Live and direct in the original Dub mixing fashion,
the Augsburg-based artist uniquely transports the sonic characteristics of
Rhythm & Sound into the present time. Subtle vinyl crackles gently
introducing meditative beats, 'Run Dub' sets the pace. Keen listeners find
themselves embedded in lively echoes and reverbs, left to bask in smooth,
sonic contemplation. Engineered to soothe the soul, timeless foundation
sound. Intensified groove meets low-frequency pressure in 'Amir Dub' among
haunting melodica fragments. '(Yes!) Badness' unsheathes its off-kilter
swing, vocal and foley samples musing in the distance - further showcasing
Another Channel's technical prowess. Heavy chord stabs and delicate overdrive
counterpoint the immense scope of conjured space in 'Ael Na Dub', concluding
a beautiful A-Side. Lush chords lure us to the flip-side - 'Solid' kicks off
with a staccato bass-line in the midst of lavish white noise surges and
minimal drums. Rooted in endless feedback trails, steadily kept in check.
Previously teased, the mighty 'Ethiopian Dub' steps through in full glory,
carried by militant drum motion and forceful low-end. On a more spacious
excursion, 'Uranus' takes a brightly lit stroll through the analogue Dub
universe, led on by Another Channel's signature groove propulsion. Pointing
back towards A-Side, prolific Dub proponent Babe Roots presents his musical

First released in 1976, 'Metallic
K.O.' was the fourth album from Iggy & the Stooges, a classic, memorable
recording of the Stooges confrontational last gig. The Stooges had not been
heard since '73's 'Raw Power', and the sound of kamikaze Iggy in between new
songs dodging eggs and glasses thrown by Hell's Angels gave him a new
audience in the embryonic punk crowd. It defined Iggy as a punk originator,
sold 100k+ and become the Stooges best-selling album. This is Marc Zermati's
original album edit that shocked and inspired so many. In the 2007
remastering from the original tapes an original tape-speed fault was found
and fixed - it's now heard in the correct pitch. As Lester Bangs said:
"It's the only rock album I know where you can actually hear hurled beer
