It
has been a little over a year since the release of 747's debut album, in
which the Canadian masterfully drew notes of inspiration from the 90s to
create an enchanting hour-long dream. In his first EP since, 747 returns from
a temporal leap, bringing with him a blend of sounds and expressions to forge
a timeless trip which hinges on the sounds of the 303. Opening the release,
"you,you" unfolds with a gentle and shimmery padded ambiance of
anticipation. Gentle and light-footed percussion is soon interrupted by a
dramatic siren, a warning beacon. Frenetic energy ensues, a frantic rush to
the floor met with a cloudy head. Encompassed in an envelope of disorienting
wailing and intermittent buzzing, but finally grounded by the familiarity of
a 4/4 bass drum. "Does Anybody Remember Laughter?" steps in to
relinquish the force of gravity. The animated arpeggio and gleaming singing
acid line rise up, uncovering the kaleidoscopic nature of the structural
surroundings. "While My 303 Gently Weeps" divulges further,
exposing an underlying grid of dark geometry - binary and robotic |

two EP releases on Bristol label Shall Not Fade, Felipe Gordon is preparing
for the release of his debut album on the important UK imprint. With human
contact at an absolute minimum, it's refreshing to hear an electronic music
record that ventures away from the machine in favour of the organic. Gordon's
ability to blend complex jazz instrumentation with acid-licked basslines,
golden-age house aesthetics and the cultural sounds of South America is
unrivalled; creating distinctive, beautiful and exciting house records from
his home in the Colombian capital of Bogota. "A Landscape
Onomatopeya" was crafted through the concept of a painting; exploring
shades, changes of tone, use of light. "I found myself making tons of
music and wondering how to start an album process", he says,
"something with more concept; a long journey between all the different
musical influences in my head. I wanted to try to accomplish something with
soul, deepness and an inherent melancholia to it. More organic, more
human." The record - which includes the Spanish word Onomatopeya as a
Colombian statement and ode to the Latin American house scene - kicks off
with the early evening funk of "How Do You Spell That", the
distinct sugar cane sweetness of Guaro hanging in the late sunlight.
"Wes" ventures into hip hop territory; dusty boom baps, 90's
scratching and live guitar provoking a vibe that lies somewhere between Dilla
and fellow Colombian AvenRec before the A-side reaches its climax with a cut
of Gil Scott-Heron-esque funk on "She Will Come". The B-side raises
its curtain and with it comes two cuts of sublime house, each more colourful than
the last. "The Colombian Excursions of House Music" does exactly
what is says on the tin; fusing South American drum patterns with the
creative innovation of live jazz to create a dimly lit, Latin American
energy. "Momma, It's A Long Journey" maintains a more progressive
vibe as it meanders through subtle acid stabs, radiant atmospherics and an
oxymoronic blend of mournful, hopeful vocals |

Madrid's
Roll Dann keeps up the high quality of his first few releases with a new EP
on his Opera 2000 label that offers four fine cuts. Roll Dann has already
impressed with outings on Modularz, Soma and PoleGroup. It is the direct
nature of his floor facing techno that appeals, and it comes infused with the
inspirations he has picked up from a stint living in Berlin, as well as with
the legacy of his teenage love of hardtechno-schranz. The start of Roll Dann
& _asstnt's Opera 2000 marks a shift Roll Dann's creative direction where
he focuses on an aggressive yet beautifully emotive style which is displayed
wonderfully in his first solo release on the imprint entitled
"Oppression Dance". Big opener "When The Hate Goes Away"
is a frazzled, over driven techno monster with slamming kick drums and
fizzing synths that will rewire any dance floor. The brilliant "Break
The Dance" then hammers you over the head with its brutal drums and big
synth walls, but a more thoughtful pad also smears over the groove to bring
some tenderness. "Oppression" is quick and slick, with a kinetic
sense of techno funk getting you on your toes |

Christl is a powerhouse of a DJ, producer, label manager, record store owner
and all-round house music aficionado. Shall Not Fade is excited to announce
Cinthie is joining the family to mark the 60th release on the label. Free
Fall EP shows off the German polymath's expansive musical knowledge,
developed through decades of spinning vinyl. The 4-tracker kicks off with
"Offenbach Anthem" bounces along with a varied post-disco inspired
beat and oh-so-deep bassline that strikes against the aerated chords of the
melody. Dramatic strings add to the disco flavour, the fluid and glittery
opener cruises into the tight, 4-to-the-floor business and stuttering stabs
of "13 Steps To Heaven". Rave energy takes over on "Oh No No
No"; organ takes centre stage blending with crooning diva vocalisations
- releasing the tension of the last track into an overflow of euphoria.

Residing
in Rio de Janeiro, Vasconcelos Sentimento is a self-taught composer, producer
and multi-instrumentalist. A mosaic of lo-fi breaks, cosmic ambient jazz and
wonky chromatic funk, the eccentric Brazilian DIY wizard’s debut album Furto
beautifully pieces together a huge range of seemingly disparate sonic
elements. Calling himself an “amateur euphoric sound researcher”, he has no
formal training in either music theory or production, and it’s simply by
following his ear that has led him to creating his debut album for Far Out
Recordings. It was his fascination with his fellow countryman, the enigmatic,
psychedelic 70s folk artist Jose Mauro, that led the young Vasconcelos
Sentimento (real name Guilherme Esteves) to first make contact with Far Out.
Coincidentally living in the same region as Mauro, Sentimento managed to
track him down and put label boss Joe Davis in touch, after Davis had spent
years of what felt like hopeless searching for the man many assumed dead.
When Joe and the Far Out team heard Guilhermes’ own music, there was a sense
of shock. “It was unlike anything we’d heard before, but it also sounded
curiously at home on Far Out. Like it had taken little pieces of different
releases from the catalogue, and all the music from the ‘60s onwards that
influences everything we do, and recreated all that magic in such an exciting
new way”. Indeed, Sentimento is not afraid to admit what he himself sees as
acts of theft. (Furto=Theft in Portuguese). But while the debate surrounding
the ethics of sampling is a never ending one, Sentimento’s music - while it
does contain the odd sample, including an interview with Joe Davis himself,
“One For The Masta Digga”) - steals in an entirely different way. His
creative process involves an intensive period, in which he’ll listen to just
one artist or song over and over, for days and weeks on end. Then he’ll head
to his rudimentary bedroom studio, which, as he puts it, is “built for
speed”, hit record and “blurt” whatever comes out. “I never spend more than a
day working on any one song idea”... Picasso once said “lesser artists
borrow; great artists steal”. And it’s through this process of ‘Furto’ that
Vasconcelos Sentimento has somewhat ironically cultivated a sound that is
unmistakably his own |

years on and Out Of The First Rays is still as powerful today. As the band
rip straight into "Head On" it's clear that Josiah wanted to take
heavy rock back to it's opiate drenched roots. Psychedelic lyrics sung with
soul and the heavy as fuck grooves laid down across this release owe a debt
to Black Sabbath and Monster Magnet. "Malpaso" quickly became the
bands signature track (featuring on film soundtracks and TV shows) with its
pulsating riffs and trippy middle section and "Spacequake" makes
you start to think there must be something in the midlands water supply, as
Bethancourt echoes Ozzy with "come take my hand my child" and the
Iommi styled guitar hooks kick you straight in the gut. "Sweet Smoke"
kicks off side B with its Cactus meets Grand Funk early 70's rock vibes. The
sonic interplay between the power trio, back the vocals up for this anthem to
a burning earth, "Let the flames just take you higher". The 10
minute closer "Black Maria" with its psychedelic twin vocals and
one of the heaviest riffs you'll hear this side of dead, gives way to uptempo
bass grooves and a wah drenched lead break. Take another sip of the electric
kool-aid baby, before we "slide down the cosmos" and fall into the
big black sleep |

Derek
Carr is a shining light in the world techno. Born and raised on a diet of
soulful machine music, this Irish artist has honed his sound over decades. It
is this wealth of knowledge and experience that forms the backdrop of
Arrival. Carr is greatly influenced by the complex, yet warm, style that
characterised UK techno in the 1990s. This inspiration flows through the LP,
a ten-track trip that begins with the understated elegance of the title
piece. And elegance is an undoubted quality of this album. Drums are bold and
melodies delicate in “Alaska Blue” with “Lunar Cycles” tracing a journey back
to the halcyon days of deep electronics. The skies above, or the heavens, are
a definite creative source for Carr. “Anoat System,” with its soaring
strings, and “Droid World,” whose sparks of electro grow to a superb
brightness, tell of a fictional fascination with space. The parred back
grandeur of “Apollo” tells another story. From a base of brittle beats and
static rinses, orbiting notes bend and reflect as a measured musical epic
unfolds. Across the album, an unrivalled sense of balance is achieved. The
bolder kicks of “Haemoglobin” give space for cascading, fragile keys. That
same bedrock proves fertile ground for the crafted textures and smooth harmonies
of “Inside Out.” The closer, “MCR”, brings another element to the
proceedings. A raft of drum patterns and a liquid bassline give rise to a
final foray into the stars, twinkling notes ebbing to twilight. “Arrival” is
emblematic of Derek Carr’s talent. Travelling across ten tracks, this audio
journey explores the splendours of this world, and beyond, through lovingly

Time
is a weird little thing. It can breathe life into our banal existence, but it
can also crush us. Time unites and separates people. It's often our only sole
guide in history and a reference for social, cultural and political
evolution. Our struggle to be constantly racing with it, is often the reason
why we tend to feel detached from all that once shaped us. With
"Kanatitsa" Ivan Shopov and Avigeya have created a bridge to the
realm of Bulgarian folklore which is often forgotten and taken for granted,
while the rest of the world finds it fascinating. Having embraced our
folklore as their own creative pulse, they have shaped the album not as a
showcase about how traditional music can co-exist with contemporary
electronics, but as a homogeneous and
organic body of work, where the boundaries of music and time don't exist.
The album sees Ivan Shopov and Avigeya exploring a vast variety of genres.
From the carefully structured ambient waves of the self-titled piece, to the
deep chill out vibes in "Sluntse" - it's all a rollercoaster of
music, which peaks not in the drum'n bass or dubstep rooted tracks, but

Adelphi
Music Factory are a collective hailing from Sheffield, here in their own
words to "increase the peace". Their uplifting and addictive house,
flooded with nods to the British rave sound, brings people together to dance.
The collective has seen a meteoric rise in fame, gaining plaudits from global
DJs and their releases repeatedly tipped by Annie Mac as the hottest records
in the world. Their debut on Shall Not Fade in August sold out, with the
repress flying out. Now they're back for more; Electric Arc Furnace EP is a
ferocious record, cementing Adelphi Music Factory as a northern powerhouse.
Like their other releases, Electric Arc Furnace is all about fuelling the

Hailing
from Rotterdam, DJ Crisps returns to Time Is Now with another hot and heavy
four tracker, teasing experimental genre play on the newest addition to his
fast-growing discography. This exciting collection of modern garage
reinventions is not to be missed. No Dirty Money EP showcases DJ Crisps'
clever production style, a mix of drama and fun; "Don't Need No Dirty
Money" kicks the record off with staccato minimalist percs that have a
metallic edge, effervescent vocal samples contrasting the momentous sub bass.
"Dynamic Reflections" creates an icier soundscape, juxtaposed
arpeggios echoing each other across a calm, deep bassline and cavernous pads
- gentle, but still alive and kicking. Lazy sax and ghostly pads open the
expansive B side; "Release the Pain" then flips the energy with a
Niche style bassline and cheeky garage synths. The jazz samples remain to
create a real fusion sound. To end, "Sweet Melodies" pairs dirty
garage with funk n soul, chopped up vocals and a classic James Brown sample

In 1983, Aviador Dro, the
legendary Spanish synth/pop band, are living their best moment: their own
record label (DRO) is working full time< they share management with famous
Spanish new wave bands like Alaska & Los Pegamoides, Los Nikis, Gabinete
Caligari etc. Their songs are played frequently on the radio and they play
numerous gigs all across Spain. That's when the band decides to create their
most ambitious project to date: a deluxe boxset titled 'Sintesis: La
Producción Al Poder', which will include two LPs, a 7" and a booklet.
It's there where 'Tesis', their second album, originally appears, along with
another album called 'Antítesis', which shows the more experimental side of
the band. A few months later, 'Tesis' is released separately with a slight
change on the tracklist |

Wave Acid Punx' is a 38 track journey across nearly 40 years of dark club
music compiled and curated by Berlin-based Musician and DJ, Luca Venezia aka
Curses. Inviting friends with a like-minded affection for an 80s rooted
sound, and diving deep into his record collection, Curses has put together a
three CD/double vinyl set that takes us from music by Colourbox and Suicide
to EBM pioneers, Front 242 through to recent club hits from Zombies in Miami,
and 12 brand new, totally exclusive tracks from the likes of Shubostar,
Chinaski, and Curses himself. Exploring the darker side of club music, 'Next
Wave Acid Punx' traces decades of a musical passion and joins the dots
between the EBM, New Beat, Italo and Acid House tracks of the 1980s to
present music of today. "Putting together a compilation like this is a
strange experience. I've never been one to stay still too long. Whether as a
musician, DJ, or producer I'd never wanted to tie myself down to one scene or
one sound, always looking to move on before I'd maybe run a project
completely dry. With an album you create a snapshot of who you are during
that time in life, with a DJ set maybe just that night, but this felt more
like trying to sum up a lifetime of musical experiences. A bit daunting! But
in putting this comp together I did find a path that led from listening to
FRONT 242 and Ministry cassettes in my bedroom when I was just 11, through to
the music I make and play today. What links these tracks together, is an
attitude. It's one I've been drawn to since I was a teenager, playing in punk
bands, skateboarding in NYC, hanging out at CBGBs, and following Sonic Youth
around, to eventually raving every weekend at underground drum & bass and
electro nights. As a teenager I'd dig through the bargain bins at shops like
Vinyl Mania and Bleecker Bob's where you'd find all these Freestyle, Italo
and New Beat records |
