Boys Noize about Midnight: 'I've
had the vocal for a long time and I played with it in my DJ-sets but I never
found the right angle to make this an actual song. My first attempt was this
industrialbreak sort of idea but I kicked it away and tried many other
versions. I thought I can do something like - XTC' but it just didn't work
out. So, I decided to re-visit my very first idea and YES it became my
favorite version. This process is a good example of trusting your initial
feelings and intuition.' Remixes by: Boys Noize & Mr. Oizo, Addison
Groove, Audion and a vinyl exclusive by Cardopusher |

Since September 2015 Surgeon has
been performing live improvised techno using hardware machines. This has been
a gradual process of evolution over the 24 years that he's been performing to
a point where it really can't be called Djing anymore. He's taken the
techniques and inspiration from this live creative process and distilled them
into these four tracks. Always pushing forward against the plague of

Having
already unleashed a considerable amount of collaborative magic with the
"Planetary Funk: 22 Light Years" series of remix EPs, Luke Slater
has now upped the ante with six full sides' worth of material, all of them
injecting the spirit of classic P.A.S. into new sonic organisms. Using motifs
from past P.A.S. successes, Luke Slater and his cohorts join here to make
something radical and revitalizing: too cohesive for a "compilation
album" and with too much autonomy granted to the guest remixers to be a
simple "tribute," this new LP is the boldest statement in the
series yet. Three of the tracks in the program are intense and captivating
live re-workings from Slater himself, hurtling from the speakers with an
apparent minimum of post-production polish and an optimal level of buzzing
energy. The first of these, his new "Surface Noise" treatment,
sends listeners wading through a dark pool of restlessly throbbing sound with
a single buzz-tone as a beacon, adding new percussive fuel to keep the
journey going just when it seems all will fade into enveloping darkness |

Unknown
Archetype AKA Roxy Tripp & Oliver Kucera debut their visceral
experimental techno for R&S on this three track EP Unknown Archetype is a
collaborative project between Roxy Tripp, a British conceptual artist &
music producer, and Oliver Kucera a Czech born Producer & Live performer,
residing in the Netherlands. With an extensive background of solo projects in
the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as Unknown
Archetype in 2015. The TRIPP EP is an abrasive, visceral EP of electronic
body music underpinned by themes of Jungian psychology, symbolism and
mythology. The industrial tech funk of lead track Voyeurism kicks things off
- skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving
the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘Tripp’ see the duo employing
sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm
box figure. Matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer
‘The Serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum
groove and scything cymbals |

from the original DAT tape
Originally released on vinyl R&S in 1994, 'Meditation Will Manifest'
was re-earthed in 2016 by Nina Kraviz and Ricardo Villalobos, becoming a
secret weapon on dancefloors 22 years after its original release. Josh Wink
has always been ahead of musical trends and walks his own path in dance
music. From a young age Wink was exposed to different mysticism and
consciousness philosophies. 'It wasn't a big, popular or trendy thing to do
at the time, but I was 14 and just did what my mother did... Releasing tracks
like 'Meditation Will Manifest' and 'Higher States of Consciousness', people
looked at me as being this deeply profound spiritual guy, but I never really
thought about it in that way, even though I'm really into repetitive,
transcendental and meditative rhythms. I don't do drugs, so I never really
had another outlet to get into alternative states.' - Josh Wink (taken from
recent Mixmag article). ''Meditation Will Manifest' is quite rightly regarded
as a classic track in the R&S catalogue |

The tension between the natural
and artificial, the body and mind, are central themes in electronic music in
general, and Techno in particular, as the means of creation, focused around
technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional
response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos
of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it produced. We’re
navigating a world of engineered pleasures, big data monitoring of movements
and consumption habits, and falsely objective representations of reality,
further blurred by a reduced attention span and several opaque layers of
cultural interpretation and political manipulation.Manichean simplifications
are used to create hate and fear in order to achieve domination and impose
limits on freedom, and the irrational belief in endless growth, increasingly
disconnected from nature, led to massive environmental destructions and waves
of unprecedented extinctions of species |

Token followers can rejoice that now, 2014,
Surgeon finally makes his official debut on the label. Fixed Action Pattern
comes as prequel to Aphelion, a forthcoming compilation of new and exclusive
material. Aphelion will differ from last year's Token Introspective mix CD by
providing a collection of bespoke productions from Token regulars and
like-minded artists who were commissioned by label owner Kr!z to bring their
individual and complimenting sound to the Belgian imprint's all-consuming
48th release. Following this Surgeon 12", Rødhåd will release his second
record for Token before the final unveiling of Aphelion. Anthony Child has
appeared on Token once before in 2008 remixing Grovskopa's Sex & Violins,
and while regularly supporting the label's music in his DJ sets, it's been a
long awaited six years for UK techno's most trusted producer to resurface on
an imprint he's helped inspire and influence |

Token
certainly have their staples - Ctrls, Ø [Phase] or Inigo Kennedy making
regular appearances. The last release on Token for example, Ø [Phase]'s
'Tunnel Vision/Internal Conflict' 12" showed the producer enjoys a level
of familiarity with the label, allowing him to indulge his more leftfield
tendencies, resulting in some truly captivating dancefloor moments. Just as often Token will ingratiate new
talent to the roster however, continuously reshaping their boundaries. The
most recent record comes from one such new addition. In the wider sense
though, it'd hardly be fair to call Parisian producer Antonin Jeanson aka
Antigone fresh-faced. Since debuting in 2011 on Zadig's then relatively new
Construct Re-Form label, Jeanson has enjoyed an impressively consistent run
of releases, despite his penchant for sounds which are a little out of the
ordinary. His inaugural release with
Kr!z's Token Records, the 'Cantor Dust' EP, is similarly reflective of his
inclination to mix the abstract with the functional. Jeanson's movements
across the release are difficult to second guess – 'Anna Livia' opens with
Klaus Schulze reminiscent, spacial electronica, yet the serenity doesn't last
for long |

Inigo
Kennedy's relationship with Token spans the label's existence. He set the
mood for what was to come from the very first release: A refined, yet
courageous excursion, instantly recognisable as fitting with his own sonic
identity, cultivated over many years of experience. This sound has become
definitive in the context of Token's output ever since. After his previous
contribution earlier this year, a record thematically obsessed with a line of
obscure interstellar clouds, he's back with another double A-side for our
next release. Surrender begins with with a textured awakening. The
intermixture of slow swells and attentively-dashed accents in a range of
timbres guides us blindly towards a shocking, strident interruption when the
percussion is suddenly introduced with full and resolute force. As the track
continues Kennedy makes sense of the unexpected jolt on our behalf, and the
two opposing inclinations become one. Castles In The Air retains a similar
theme, with the kind of self-awareness that only a producer of Kennedy's
level of maturity can employ. Gloomy, lingering chords begin and then pause,
forcing us to wait expectantly, with more than a moment lingering in reverb |

A
relative newcomer, Antigone joined Token in 2015 after a succession of
releases on well-respected imprints such as Concrete and Construct Re-Form.
His first Token record was a 2LP statement of purpose, with hints of
neo-classical ambience in the opener into decisive, utilitarian mesmerism for
the dancefloor in later tracks. He returned again earlier this year with the
Saudade EP for TOKEN59; an overall heavier offering that still manages to
retain some of the delicacy of the first. Now he's back with a 3 tracker for
TOKEN68. Antigone employs an advancement on his usual sonic vocabulary to
produce yet another record of surprising techno tracks. Static's lead is
woody as it begins, then evolves with gradual accents – a confident off-beat
hi hat and detailed highlights varying in aggression. Shadow Play starts out
more panicked than playful, then straightens out under the driving
percussion. This track is all about noisy atmospherics, confusing our sense
of space through masterful panning. Where the A-side is staunchly
anti-melodic, Walking Distance is dulcet in comparison |

Tadeo first released on Token in
2015 with the instant classic Terra Incognita, reminiscent of the kind of
techno-futurism usually employed by some of the Detroit greats. If Terra
Incognita was an interpretation of outer space, The Pit comes from deep in
the ground. This is electronic programme music; bookended in distinctive
Tadeo style with a modal string section that places the record firmly in the
avant-garde, The Pit guides us through the moods and associations of a
classic science fiction narrative. The record is consistent in its
instrumental palette, with a subdued but powerful low-end to set the pace,
disorienting semitone meanderings and organic percussion in the mid, and
massive, crashing hats that lift statement sections beyond comprehension |

Token
is pleased to announce Metabolism, the sophomore album from Sigha. The LP
marks James Shaw's third release on the Token label following his singles
Christ Figures and Our Father. Metabolism represents an arrival: the artist
offers his definitive statement on a production aesthetic that has been in
development over the last few years. Shaw's work as Sigha has always placed
the listener at a centrifugal point that invites a clandestine hypnosis
rather than an abject hysteria. Cavernous low ends fixed firmly and
effectively in a mono space tether the music to the body, while exquisitely
executed white noise patterns and crystalline pads warp and hiss around the
stereo environment. This keen ear for distinction within the frequency
spectrum acts as the central theme on the LP. Metabolism encompasses a power
dynamism that departs from the explicitly greyscale finish found on his more
conceptual work as Sigha and as A Vision Of Love for Guy Brewer's Avian
label. Though elements of Metabolism maintain a driven, corrosive quality,
each searing sequence or mordant drum machine hit occupies its own space |

After the success of the broad
and powerful second LP Alone In Time?, Ø [Phase] continues his ongoing
connection to Token with the Submerged Metropolitan EP. The title track
enters with Burchett's own brand of unease; the lead is tense and discordant,
moving over a bumpy, rolling kick. Brushing off-beat hats rush overhead and
play delicately with this unease above the thunder. A vague spoken word
sample adds texture and contributes to the cerebral edge. Ethereal swells and
intense rhythmic play introduce Fallen Columns, which delves into atonality
with keys that add a controlled recklessness to the composition. This Absent
Mind takes on a hypnotic, dubby form with a confidence that belies its
complexity. A sublime breakdown introduces the heavier second half of the
track, which enters impressively and batters on to the end |

For
nearly a decade, Raíz and Subversive have distributed their vision of dance
music on various labels including Historia y Violencia, Electric Deluxe,
Construct Reform, Droid Recordings and their own imprint VRV. Three years
into the VRV project, the label heads have decided it is time to expand the
roster and showcase artists on a similar plane, producers they know can speak
to the sound. The chosen interpreters on this release include Drumcell &
Truncate as Cell Injection, and Silent Servant. Silent Servant Remixes Raíz's
Cored 3. The former Sandwell District and current Jealous God co-conspirator
steps up with a stark composition in which melodic arpeggiation builds over
industrial drones and echoing drums. The mix of sound reaches a clear peak,
then segues into a calm that's expertly tooled for mixing. Drumcell and
Truncate Remix Raíz's Cored 2. Droid Behavior's best-known producers take up
their Cell Injection collaboration to hollow out Raíz's "Cored 2"

Blaring
and unnerving, YYYY's 'Intention Of Mortal' gets revisited with a remix
package featuring Lucy, Varg, Ascion and YYYY themselves, resulting in a
barrage of arpeggiated behaviour and regimented soundscapes. A force pushing
forward creativity with on-point refinement, Lucy immediately veers in with
his visceral power of sound. An avalanche of intricate and experimental
arrangement soon meets a series of astute percussion and typical foreboding
energy, retaining a certain texture-over-beat throughout. YYYY's depth of
music imagination & influence is heard in this highly charged,
awestricken ensemble for their rework of 'Intention Of Mortal'. Unfolding a
mixture of fear and complication, this track keeps you thinking as well as
moving. An almost endless supply of plucked synth rhythm keeps the chaos taut
and throughout. Ascion's remix of 'Stone Relief of Gods Faces' credits the
release with clean kicks, industrial clanks and atmospheric keys. This
no-nonsense approach to production is not to be underestimated; a dream-state
sequence of induced electronic abstraction |
