The
second release on Artefakt's De Stijl expands the sound of the imprint
introducing three new names to the catalog. The record ascends into a
subterranean rave with Aphelions' 'Temple 7' depicting a ritualistic
gathering carved out in distorted analog transients, shimmering melodies and
modulated voices moving over deep pounding sub frequencies. Label founders
Artefakt sustain the urgency on the A side with 'Agents Of Reality', a high
energy uncompromised off-beat structure venturing into eery resonant pads
gravitating towards a subdued acid motive. Energy shifts towards subsonic
atmospheres takes place on the B side, as Artificial Drm envelops the
listener in a layered driven spectacle with his heady piece 'Human With No
Name'. From the residual hiss and feedback tones of the B1, Northern
Electronics affiliate Korridor emerges with an epic ambient piece titled
'VI'. Lush pads and analog square bass-lines drift off into rhythmical
arpeggiations bringing a close to versatile record which transports the
listener to another place and feeds the imagination |

Area
Forty_One now steps up for a full EP on Delsin. The Dutchman proves himself
to be an elegant producer of electro that has a super future soul to it
across the four tracks on offer. First up, 'Nocturnal Passions Part I' skips
on snappy drums through an ethereal galaxy lit up with neon trails and
twinkling lights. It's a vastly spacious track full of celestial vibes and
expert production before 'Reminiscence' deals in more serene pads and glassy
melodies and conjures the sense that you are lost floating in deep space
without a rudder. It's a beautiful place to be for the way it has no real
drive or direction. Then, 'Freefall' trudges along some heavy, gloopy drums.
All around are huge mirrors of melody that shine and reflect light back at
you and leave you marvelling at their sheer scale and sereneness. Final track
'Isolated Soul' sure is aptly title, featuring sad synths, skipping beats and
raining melodies that make you feel beautifully alone. There's a menacing
sense of tension pervading the whole track, too, that makes it all the more
engaging |

tracks from the years 92/93/94. Featuring melodic breakbeat from early San
Franciscan rave act Enlight, moody Techno from James Bernard's Cybertrax
project (the track in question here having only seen the light of day on the
1994 'The Secret Life of Trance Volume 3' compilation) and epic Trance-breaks
from Germany producer Utasia. Hot stuff!! |

Following noticeable releases on
Tone Dropout, Art Of Dark, Overthink and Shadow Play, frenchman Daïf returns
to his own imprint for LUMINAERE 002 Highways of Life. Distancing from the
spacey atmosphere of the first one, this four tracker captures a personal
side of Daïf’s musical identity, powerful and twisted. On the A side,
Downtown spiral sets the tone of the EP. Field with melodic pads and
ear-piercing leads this 4/4 track bursts with energy. Then follows Burnout,
perhaps the most complex of the four. UK garage like style, mesmerizing bass
lines and pads, buckle up, you’re in for a 200 mph drive. On the B side, Terrible Lie is a hot banger
with a ravy old school flavor. Warehouse synths, cheesy vocal samples, stabby
leads and melodic pads, this one is guaranteed to do some damage. Finally,
closing off is Exhaust-ed, hauntingly beautiful track with powerful breaks
interleaved with acid bass lines going back and forth with melodic chords |

A
native of Poznan, the multi-instrumentalist composer/producer Waclaw Zimpel
has steadily been gaining recognition as one of the most singular and
original talents to have emerged from Poland in contemporary times. His
second solo album 'Massive Oscillations' is set for release on January 31st,
and is his first for the Amsterdam-based label Ongehoord. At various points
Waclaw deploys bass clarinet, alto clarinet, electronics, prepared upright
piano and Yuri Landman guitar object. Wojciech Traczyk adds double bass and
Holly Hock provides vocals to 'Release', whist all tracks were mixed by James
Holden, who according to Zimpel "added his magic touch". 'Massive
Oscillations' is Zimpel's most accomplished album to date - a hypnotic and
beguiling work given to moments of subtle euphoria. Gently rhythmic,
repetetive but morphing grooves are decorated with elegant musical
flourishes. An exquisite vertical listening experience, tracks rev like
ignition on a motor. They swell, undulate and breathe in a non linear motion,
hovering more than moving, or steadily levitating heavenwards |
