Led by Charles Mingus and Max
Roach, this 1960 recording was made, in some regard, in protest. Growing
increasingly annoyed by the booking policy of the Newport Jazz Festival,
which he found to be too conservative and lacking in foresight, Mingus formed
this group with the such future leaning artists as Eric Dolphy and Max Roach,
and the vocalist Abbey Lincoln. Recorded over only two sessions at New York's
Nola Penthouse Studios, this Newport Rebels group put together a fine piece
of post-bop that, despite its rather bitter beginnings, deserves to be more

On 9 January 1970, the young
Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham, from now venerated
rock band Led Zeppelin, took to the world-famous Royal Albert Hall stage to
deliver one of the most celebrated gigs of their career. Although the legendary
foursome had made their debut here only the year before, alongside Liverpool
Scene and Blodwyn Pig at the First London Gala Pop Festival 1969, they were
nervous. The band played a for nearly two hours without a break - a set
dominated by material from the band's first two albums, and including a

hottest producers out there at the moment. Jannowitz label head BOHO teamed
up with techno power duo Gaga & Mateo! to create what is probably the
most pumping EP that the imprint has brought ot life in the last years.
Kenzo“ EP consists – as usual – of two original tracks and two remixes. The
title track being the classic Jannowitz Records style: melodic, minimal and
full-on techno. With heavy-hitting kicks, slashing percussions and some

Ben Kei - Desolate. Dalston Chillies founder brings his perpetual spicing to

Trule materialized fully-formed
in late 2018 with zero hype or fanfare, and quickly became a buy-on-site
label for fans of dubwise garage/tech/bass hybrids. It took us a minute to
realize that the label's boss and primary artist Al Wootton was none other
than Deadboy, who'd been making post-2 Step memories for his many devotees
with a decade's worth of melancholy club beasts like "U Cheated"
(Well Rounded) and "If U Want Me" (Numbers). We knew we had to have
some of his new works for ZamZam, so we couldn't have been happier when he
crafted some sound system tunes just for us, the first label besides Trule to
host tracks under his under his own name. "Request" marries a
steamrolling bassline to a pummeling 4/4 kick, syncopated percussion, dark
skanks, and layer upon layer of haunted reverbs, vocal fragments, and
decaying tape delay. While full steppers, the slyly swung drum work never let
you forget his roots in deep garage and house. Special Request!! |

Eulberg's Mannigfaltig album proved a huge success last year, and now Eulberg
has curated a top selection of 10 outstanding artists to rework key tracks
from it. The first of two Remix-EPs contains reworks by Mind Against, Nathan
Fake, Adana Twins, Shed and 1979. The Italian duo Mind Against go first after
fomenting their own celestial techno sound on Tale Of Us` After Life. Here
they remix 'Goldene Acht' into a brain cleansing melodic cut with sparkling
synths as the supple techno drums hypnotise below. Long time Border Community
innovator Nathan Fake then flips 'Dreizehenspecht' into a swaggering bit of
heavy, broken dub with glassy sounds, crunchy hits and bright harmonies

from Oaxaca, Mexico and currently based in Brussels, Vica Pacheco crafts a
rich sound world that comes alive in surprising manifold turns. On the heels
of Vocamorphosis, her stunning electroacoustic piece commissioned by France
Culture where Ferrari-esque divagations venture into the untamed fancies of
an imaginary wilderness, her debut record Symplegmata transposes a continuous
exploration of unearthed sound narratives into briefer vignettes that,
together, allow for a fully-fleshed mythology to unfurl. Departing from the
idea of the symplegma - biological fusions, hermaphrodite sexuality, the
amalgamation of distinct beings into fully-realized entities - Pacheco
synthesizes field recordings and manipulated vocals in order to weld unique
micro-sculptures that convey environments as contrasting as they are
complementary. The 12 tracks that compose Symplegmata can be interpreted as
elements for an alternative science fiction soundtrack or as the leisurely
tunes of a parallel civilization from future pasts; either way, the
physicality of Pacheco’s sound crafting beckons the kind of immersive melding
that, much like the underwater symplegmatic beings of her lore, generate new
fusional experiences with each listen |

Reggae music from Libya, recorded
in 2008. Released for the first time officially after collecting millions of
plays on youtube. Ahmed Ben Ali was born in 1971 in Benghazi. He went to
boarding to school in Canada for 8 years, and returned to Libya. For a couple
of years he also worked in the UK. Music was never his main job but his
"main hobby" as Ahmed says. He recorded maybe 40 tracks and
released two more albums. He also started playing gigs in Libya with his own
band. In 2008 a friend of his decided to set up a youtube account for him by
starting with two uploaded tracks. The account remained untouched since 11
years. At some points two of the tracks from this account started gaining
traction. "Sibhana", the infectious Libyan reggae, which you can
also hear on this release and "Damek Majeb", the second track on
this 12 inch which is leaning more towards a clubby Arabic pop feel |

hauntingly absorbing album - his first since 2001 - dispatched on his pivotal
label; Downwards. On a masterful twenty-year followup to ‘Penetration’, Karl
O’Connor yields a definitive solo LP that distills his passions for sonic
brutalism and bastardised Chicago tracks with syncopated UK swagger and
reverberating warehouse ballistics. Its lip-bitingly gripping effect is
testament to a resounding reputation as one of Industrial music’s most
influential producers, and sees the artist bring his own influences - from
Test Department to Jeff Mills - into line with his potent palette of
narcotised tones. Recorded in Berlin with Einstürzende Neubauten’s
producer/engineer Boris Wilsdorf, the album’s supple, spartan, and rhythmic
gymnastics notably benefit from acres of icy room to roll around and lash
out. Snagged around muscular bassline revs, and caressed with keys and vocals
by postpunk catalyst Annie Hogan (whose recent turn for Downwards was a total
revelation), the 9 tracks portray
Regis at his leanest and most mesmerising, which is all the more impressive
coming from an artist who’s deliberately held his line through club music’s
mutations for more than 30 years. Between the razor-sharp electro of
‘Everything is Ahead of Us’, and the pure voodoo of ‘Calling Down A Curse’,
he sharply carves a uniquely UK and shark-eyed style that lets on to
influence from tech-step D&B and dark garage rolige as much as Test
Department’s seminal ‘Beating The Retreat’ or 23 Skidoo and ‘Crackdown’-era
Cabaret Voltaire. Highlights such as the swingeing 11 minutes of swordplay
drums and bubbling acid in ‘The Sun Rose Pure’, and the straightjacketed funk
of ‘I See Fire’ epitomise the rudeness at play, and together with the
viscerally personalised sound design virtues of ‘Another Kind of Love’, the
immaculate noirish vignette ‘Alone of All Her Sex’, and the lush tristesse
evoked by ‘Eros in Tangiers’, this album effectively defines Regis as
peerless in his field, and is essential to fans of the artist’s solo classics

Haron's
Taxa EP dips into a world of fizzing electronics and draws from it four
potent club mutations. Having explored spacious ambient on 2018's
well-received Wandelaar, the Dutch producer turns his attention towards
full-body rhythms. These newly prepared compositions, the first club release
on Queeste, are dappled with synthesised colour and unexpected timbral
shifts, aligning the producer with global bass permutations while maintaining
his own playful course. The skittering dancefloor percussion of opening track
'Drosera' immediately signals this change in direction, leading effortlessly
into the tightly coiled drums of 'Benthos' whose name is taken from the
community of organisms that dwell on the seabed. In a nod to Wandelaar's
serene tones, the track ends with weightless ambience alongside snippets of
human voices, a single moment of stillness on a release elsewhere defined by
movement. 'Pantala' is pristine computerised dancehall teeming with
disembodied samples and impressionistic swirls of noise before Taxa ends with
'Pincertail' whose bustling syncopations recall UK funky at its nimblest |

Back
in March 2003 Claro Intelecto announced his arrival in the electronic world
with his Peace Of Mind EP on Ai Records. Now, a decade later, Delsin, the
label on which he released his latest LP, is re-releasing it in all its
glory. Across four perfectly formed tracks the EP proved Manchester's Mark
Stewart to have a fine grasp on techno, electro and dub, and that he was able
to do his own unique things with each. Arguably the most well known cut from
the EP is 'Peace of Mind (Electrosoul)', a busy bit of chattery
house-come-electro that is wired up with many zithering melody lines and
Claro's trademark lush strings. 'Tone' is then a much more frazzled and
aggressive bit of techno with raw, slapping percussion, gurgling synth lines
and plenty of dystopian electro vibes. 'Contact' then settles into a deep,
dubby, spacious groove with airy hi hats and a delightful bassline and
carries you along effortlessly, and final track 'Signifier' closes things out
in beautifully serene style with ambient swirling pads, organic synths and a
curious bassline that rises and falls like the tide. Seminal stuff that still
fetches a high price on Discogs, it was the start of a remarkable career for
