In
2018, the idea was introduced by Jeff Mills to address the lack of artistic
collaborations within and from the city of Detroit/USA. The city had always
been an engine of new innovative ideas related to music, art, dance, poetry
and all other arts. It was thought of as a way to demonstrate the commonality
people possess from various art forms and that by mixing ideas visions and
perspectives together are might produce unexpected and often provocative
results. The project started when Mills reached out to one of Detroit
Techno's founder and legendary DJ/Producer Eddie Folkwes. Though the two are
known and connected to Detroit Techno and knew each other for decades, they
never worked together so the first few meetings and conversations were marked
with finding all the common links that have built both of their careers.
During this time, Mills wanted to find a third person for the project, one
that was from Detroit, but not a musician. His idea and theory was that by
engaging two other creative thinkers would most likely produce something
unique as emotions would become linked together to find that common, but
higher level. While browsing the web, Mills discovered a post that featured
the Detroit-born poet Jessica Care Moore. Struck by her words and the energy
she mastered to say them, Mills knew immediately that she would be the
perfect artist to approach for this creative venture. As with most artists
that grew up in Detroit, they immediately opened up the links in their past,
present and future outlook. He presented the case and explained to her how he
thought it might work. She liked the idea and agree to join. THE CRYSTAL CITY
IS ALIVE. (A phrase extracted from Moore's words), puts the Detroit, America
and the World on notice. The alarm has sounded and it is now time to mobilize
all creative units to the frontline |

Hailing
from Memphis, Tennessee, The SCRUFFS are best known for their classic
powerpop LP "Wanna Meet The SCRUFFS?" issued in 1977. They started
to record a follow-up album with John Fry at Ardent Studios, supposedly
entitled "Teenage Gurls". In 1978, due to interest from Warner Bros
in New York City, the band moved to The Big Apple, playing at CBGB and Max's
Kansas City. One year later, leader Stephen Burns returned to Memphis to
finish the recordings which survived for years in his archives. They
eventually resurfaced only on CD, in 1998 on Burns- private label Northern
Heights and in 2003 on Rev'Ola. Die-hard popsters regard some of these songs
as their strongest material with the best ones being compiled here on Side 1.
Flashback: in 1974, the same year of BIG STAR's "Radio City" LP
release and Chris Bell solo recording sessions, producer Jim Dickinson heard
the SCRUFFS' early stages and their pre-"Wanna Meet..." material
and expected the band to be the next big thing. Only heard on CD on Northern
Heights in 1998, the best tracks from this stunning collection, recorded in
the same Shoe Studio where Chris Bell immortalized the track "I Am The
Cosmos" basically at the same time, are compiled here on Side 2. Mixed
& remasterised by Adam Hill & Stepen Burns at Ardent Studio |

Brussels-based trio schroothoop
(Dutch for ‘junk yard’) is formed by Rik Staelens (wind & string
instruments), Timo Vantyghem (bass & clarinet) and Margo Maex
(percussion). Their tribal oriented debut mini-album features homemade
instruments built from lost and found objects like wood, scrap metal or
anything that would end up in a landfill. The band’s music is infused with
sounds from around the world orchestrated by PVC flute melodies, jerry can
beats and washtub bass lines. The trio effortlessly incorporates jazz with
North African chaabi, cumbia, reggaeton, Eastern oriental melodies and
Afro-Cuban rhythms, resulting in a danceable and hypnotic trip in 7
compositions through the Brussels melting pot. The musical members are part
of groups such as La Clinik du Dr Poembak, Raksinaksi, Sea (Peoples), Borokov

return of the Russian duo Interpolarm is vividly marked by the new fruits of
their consciousness called Melchior Ep in the first catalog of the label.
This time the sound of the album is very different from the band's early
work. Two original tracks symbolizm a single-phase alloy of two elements,
giving preference to the mood of Detroit. The deep and at the same time
transparent groove in The Bald is very subtly combined with hating arpeggios,

Exhausted Modern's debut
full-length titled The Year of the Rat is a proof of the thought-provocation
that author's name generates. Released on his own Endless Illusion imprint,
the album doesn't have all the answers, it simply offers Exhausted Modern's perception
of the modern times and also the energy to do something with them. The title,
borrowed from the Chinese zodiac calendar, doesn't slip to mere esoteric
prognosis, it fittingly and provocatively comments on broken mechanics of
society, capitalistic hierarchisation and emotional frustration of its
victims. Despite the dystopian character of Exhausted Modern's sound, which
ranges from fast melancholia through suspicious calmness to slowly bubbling
rage, it doesn't feel like the end of the world. It's critical artistic
statement of a person who despite seeing all the darkness, also sees the way
out of it |

up on the waves made by his latest Diaphragm EP, Cri Du Coeur injects his
signature high-octane sound into another techno venture. This one comes in
the form of the electrifying 4-track EP Warning on the Belgian producer’s
fledgling-but- headstrong label Arkham Audio. Featuring three remixes
interweaving threatening cosmic soundscapes with pounding industrial beats,
this latest EP pulls no punches in delivering a menacing wall of sound. The
A-side opens with Cri’s original mix for Warning, showing off his signature
style of making jumpy, liquid 303 basslines bounce around a consistent dark
pad sound. The combination emanates a lingering sense of dread intensified by
warped delayed vocal samples and high-voltage buzzing underpinning the whole experience.
Following up is a remix from American producer Dustin Zahn, who delivers a
pulsa- ting battleground of modular noise. The essence of the track is the
controlled chaos of the abstract mechanical whirring and wailing born from

Josh Wink needs little introduction to fans, or even occasional listeners to
dance music. The American DJ and producer has been one of the most enduring
figures in the scene with a catalogue of music on labels like R&S,
Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Pokerflat, MNus and of course his own long standing
Ovum Recordings imprint. As a DJ, he has travelled the globe since the
mid-nineties, headlining festivals and clubs wherever he goes. What he has
never done in his almost 30-year career is ever lose touch with the roots of
underground dance music, something he demonstrates once again here with a

Bees and We Work Hard We Play Hard are the buildup and climax of the record’s
machinedriven anxiety, fit for a chase scene in a post apocalyptic megacity
thriller. Juzer is the joint project of two artists central to the
underground musicscene in Chicago, Beau Wanzer and Dan Jugle. The work of
both straddles the fault-lines between, noise, techno, industrial, EBM, and
the more frenzied shades of house. In addition to a prolific number of solo
releases, Wanzer is a member of Mutant Beat Dance with Traxx and Steve
Summers, Civil Duty with Shawn O’Sullivan, and many more. Like Wanzer, Jugle

Underground label head Kero returns to his sonic roots with the first of the
Detroit Map Series originally featured on the limited DUTT-181 Series
functional record player designed by Neubau Berlin. As a kick-start, Kero
reveals Highways—a 5-track extended player of (abstract) electronics that is
cleverly pulled together with a downbeat flow and tracks aptly sub-titled as
major freeway arteries of the Motor City.
"Davison" commutes through glitch bits, bobbles, and broken beats
flickering back and forth as it eventually opens midway through the traffic
jam and hopscotched potholes with a synthesized melodic stream. Fisher
displays its minimized techno flurry and rumbling low-end growl tempered by
subtle blips'n bleeps and clinical precision. Southfield busts apart with
modular maneuvering and heavy percussion showcasing an opportunity for Kero
to cruise in the passing lane as the piece gradually mutates into a crunchy
experimental electro epic. Lodge ebbs and flows with The Detroit Escalator

two tracks that will invade your mind and make you succumb to the beat! He
starts with ‘Ritual Master’ aptly named as he leads proceedings with a cut
with prescribed order to entice body movement. It’s electrically charged with
a rolling beat that sounds like plate pressing on a conveyer belt and has a
mechanical synth that re-energizes things recurrently. He follows it up with
‘Lone Mystic’ who seems to be pottering about altering minds. It has banging
percussions with pacey hi-hats and snares. However it’s the irregular pattern
of the graveyard-like synth that feels like a psychological hazard. Roll Dann

Unpredictable
trip through future-facing electro, hardcore and ambient influences on this
7th release of Akoya Circles. Parco Palaz returning to the label with a
driving EP that blends influences from across the dancefloor continuum.
Beginning with the physical and urgent 'Sword', a cerebral dose of body music
that unravels layers and layers of cybernetic detail, Palaz immediately takes
the EP in myriad uncompromising and unexpected directions. 'Nomadology' slaps
with a raging, bass heavy energy inspired by the cross- cultural, halcyon
days of UK rave culture, hitting harder with each breakdown and mutating
around a cosmic MC sample. 'Burning Heart' is deeper but no less infectious,
a sly blend of liquid funk and futuri! electro, buoyant with optimi!ic energy
and skittish rhythms. Shorter and crunchier, the Drexciya homage 'Sierra
Nevada' sees Palaz turn his analogue gear inwards in order to create a
ruthlessly calculated rave weapon that wears its influence proudly. The
record only grows denser amid the high-tempo of 'Equations', a frenetic drum
pattern giving way to the record's underlying texture of melancholy and even
contemplative nature, as heard on the wi!ful frequencies of EP closer,
'Surface'. "Musicians are compelled to play anything", a voice

was another Sébastien Tellier – “a lone wolf,” as the Parisian pop genius
puts it. Then he fell in love. Then, came marriage. After that, came kids,
till one day, the acclaimed synth-loving songwriter found himself alone in
his home, entranced by a toaster. “I was just listening to music when
suddenly, I started to notice all the everyday objects surrounding me,” he
laughs. These symbols of his new life – a life of spilled milk, school runs,
scrubbed floors and pasta dinners – got him thinking about growing up and
getting older; how over time we trade in the animalistic lives of our youth
for lives of quiet, calm (and yes, shiny toasters). “Domestication is a
universal subject, an experience, we all go through,” he explains. “It’s a
good life! I feel like I really exist now. That I’m more than just a wolf –
there’s a warmth now, a purpose.” On the cult star’s sixth studio album, his
first in five years, Tellier explores this topic in typically dreamy, lo-fi
fashion |
