Before
they hit it big with Phil Spector and his Phillies label, the vocal trio from
Harlem known as The Ronettes recorded numerous sides for Colpix Records. Two
sisters (Veronica, later known as Ronnie Spector, and Estelle Bennett) and
their cousin (Nedra Talley), first began performing at local sock hops and
bar mitvahs around Manhattan in the early 60s under the name Ronnie and The
Relatives. It was under this name that they recorded several sides for Colpix
Records in 1961-1962, all great slices of early sixties pop/R&B, though
none of which managed to chart. A name change to The Ronettes and more great
singles were released in 1963 (including the killer interpretation of The
Ray's doo wop classic "Silhouettes"), but again, success eluded the
group. They soon were performing with their over-the-top hair on Murray The
K's legendary live program and, disappointed with their lack of success on
Colpix, placed a call to audition for Phil Spector and the rest, as they say,
is history. However, despite Colpix's inability to find airplay and sales for
the group, these early sides nonetheless show glimpses of the greatness that
was to come and are fantastic sides of early 60s pop in their own right.

As the title implies, this McCoy
Tyner release is a low-key, after-hours affair. Far removed from the
intensity of work with then-boss John Coltrane, Tyner stretches out on a fine
mix of standards and bebop classics. The pianist, of course, always had his
own fleet and rich way with ballads, in spite of the galvanizing marathon
solos he became known for on live dates and his later experimental recordings
with Coltrane. His ballad style is even touched with a bit of sentimentality,
which thankfully is kept in check by a bevy of tasteful lines |

Soweto Soul Orchestra is produced
and composed by Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, whose importance to
South-Africa's music scene can hardly be underestimated. Being a formative
member of The Beaters, which was later renamed Harari, he toured Africa extensively
and even hit the American charts with their "Party" single. After
Harari split in 1982, Sipho went solo and scored another hit with "Burn
Out", which could be heard in every township, and produced and recorded
for Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba among others. The Soweto Soul Orchestra
project boasts a variety of funky tracks, all marked with that jazzy
South-African sound. The stand-out tune on this one, for us, is the epic 8
minute long cosmic disco cover of "Hang em High", the original
soundtrack for the eponymous classic Western movie. This 2020 re-issue sees
all tracks cut again from the official studio files, ensuring both audio

As
a moth of light we felt strongly gravitated to the “New Light” by Dinkis.
Intensity fits closest to this composition; it is the deepest, hitherto most
personal work, packed in an emotional five-part journey. The paths... between
particles shrink, often drifting apart; but they are on an endless search for
the new, the one point of attachment, which with all its nuances forms its
very own finite world. Don't hold back, go ahead. According to this pattern,
Dinkis sounds travel to “New Light”. The unknown traveller crosses the sonic
spaces in quest of variety and continuity. A dark contrast that oscillates
back and forth through slow, powerful beats and an octave bouncing bassline.
We virtually breathe the restraint, the fear of emptiness of “L'Astronauta”.
So close to the target, the guides emerge as bright, floating points on the
horizon; as the “Butterfly Poet” over a synthetic flow of sine waves. The
present chapter of this composing journey provides a passionate realization.
Suddenly, the stream of thought stops and await for new impulses begins,

First off, "Manifesto Balearico" does exactly what it says:
providing a blueprint of the Balearic Beat genre: thick layers of dreamy
keyboards over a lavish mid-tempo groove, topped by a sparse macho voiceover
and chanting sirens. With "Palmy Days" we leave the Mediterranean
Sea for the ocean and the French West Indies: it's not so much Latin music,

Ciprian Stan joins Sonet Music
for their 3rd outing and this London based Romanian does not disappoint.
After recent outings on Pool House,Yarn Records, Piano Forest and Music Is
Art, his Sonet EP sees him in top form. Channels opens the EP with a consistent
low end groove, combining quirky samples and clever percussion with the right
level of energy to keep interest on the dance floor. Next up is Some X Some Y
which from the outset has a killer groove and bass line, with plenty of
attention given to its clever drum programming, a great track which will fit
in any club room. Planks with it's haunting synths and hypnotic elements will
suit sets later into the night. Several Times has a typical Romanian sound
and gets a little more quirky with it's unbalanced feel, the drums are on

series from Carlton Jumel Smith's album "1634 Lexington Ave.",
comes the deep beat ballad "Help Me (Save Me From Myself)".
Progressing from moody minor keys towards the bittersweet hopefulness of the
chorus, the track sounds like fell from Menahan Street Band's debut sessions
with Charles Bradley and flew across the pond to soggy Helsinki, where Cold
Diamond & Mink nurtured it to it's current glory. The track starts up in
classic hip hop soul style, with open drums and cinematic Rocky horns. But
after the intro, when the ghost-like piano notes hit, is when the song really
gets going. Carlton delivers one of his best dark-end-of-the-street vocals,
matching his Timmion debut "I Can't Love You Any More". Tuomo
"Pratt" Prättälä's haunting background vocals seal the deal,
lifting the chorus to seventh group soul heaven. Whether you're completing
your Carlton single series with this gem or just getting your first whiff of

NASTY
SAVAGE's classic Demotape "Wage of mayhem" (1984) for the first
time on vinyl spiced up with a lethal selection of rare and unreleased bonus
tracks from the early days. NASTY SAVAGE were the undisputed pioneers of
Florida's Metal scene, arguments can be made that the early 90's Tampa area
Death Metal explosion was a direct result of Nasty Savage, who mixed a more
nihilistic view, lyrically and through onstage horror imagery, than the Bay
Area. Their debut demotape and the additional early tracks collected here
show the band on a more Power Metal oriented approach (at times even leaning
to NWOBHM areas) than the incendiary Thrash artillery of some subsequent
works, but the amount of memorable riffs, a dark evil mood with a few
psychedelic elements and the charismatic vocals of their distinctive frontman
Ronnie Savage, clearly show the fact that even at their inception they were
surprisingly mature and way ahead for their times. The insane, impressive
riffing and Ronnie's high-pitched vocals coin a totally unique sound. Unique,
but you can tell some of the influences, Mercyful Fate, Slayer, the heavier
NWOBHM bands generally. "Wage of Mayhem" is without the slightest
doubt one of the greatest and most influential Metal demo tapes of the 80's.

Here-s another beautiful example
of the great impact of Brazilian music on American Jazz in the '60s.
Vibraphonist Dave Pike, mostly known for his work with the likes of Herbie
Mann, Bill Evans, and Paul Bley, displays a marvelous sextet performing music
of Brazilian composer Joao Donato. Recorded and released in 1962 on the New
jazz Label, and considered as one of Pike-s essential albums, 'Bossa Nova
Carnival' sounds like a perfect combination of Brazilian sensuous flavor and

"Livity" written and produced by Ojah who has played the melodica
on this one as well. It was first recorded as a dubplate in 2013 but the
recording itself was a bit rough, and since a few of the Alchemy Dubs team's
members where insisting on putting it out as part of the Melodica Trilogy,
the melodica was re-recorded again in 2016 (as well as some of the
percussion) and the track was given a new mix and new dubs. On the B side we
find a very stripped-down dub version that breaks the original structure and
brings to the foreground elements that were part of the background before,
and that features heavy manipulation of the analog fx, performed and executed
live in one take by Ojah at Alchemy Dubs Studio |

Struyf and Carat Trax were churning out top club hits on Dance Opera, Circus,

history you could easily write a complete book on his career. In the early
nineties he became resident of Belgian mythical underground club Globe. At
that time, he did about five gigs a week, being one of the most popular DJ's
around the Benelux. After the closing of the Globe, Frank became resident of
another mythical club Carat, a meeting point of Belgian, Dutch, French and
German party people, where he played 12-hour sets, and made the club as we
know it today. Despite his busy DJ schedule Frank still found the time to
produce his own sounds. In 1993 he created Time modulator, a timeless
classic, copies of which were sold all over the world. Together with R.

opens the EP with 'Ultraviolet', an energetic, club-like cut based in a
closed and looped rhythm, with a vibrant, minimalist and industrial vision.
The sequencing of his bass - giving him futuristic feelings - and the subtle
sound of bells adds attraction to a cut intended to blow up the toughest
dance floors. What Alderaan proposes with 'Lino' is an insider techno
journey, introspective by nature, textured and exciting. From a dystopian
environment and in loop, all of it has one main idea: moving and touching the
listener's mind. Tuber through 'Second Choice' bets on a predominantly techno
cut, as floor-friendly as abstract. Here is a sign of his love for the
anabolic and the fierce and for that mentaloid touch that sometimes becomes
schizoid. Albert Van Abbe closes the EP with 'Inguma One', a cut that is an
extract from the 'Broken Cymbals' set he recorded for Semantica. It's a dub
passage in which he uses granular synthesis to create deep and icy
atmospheres, giving rise to complex and escapist textures |

Bengoa's
B2 Recordings returns with its third release this June, this time the
inaugural release from newcomer Zaq, entitled 'Magic Silver' and backed with
a remix from the label-head himself. B2 Recordings : ''Zaq is an analogue
machine expert and upcoming bright new talent in the scene. Collecting
analogue gear from the age of 15, Zaq's output has influences from dub to
italo, early 80s and 90s drum machines, ambient, reggae and acid house - his
debut on B2 recordings is a personal statement and the start of many great
things that are about to follow from the young artist.'' 'Body Waves' leads
on the release, a tripped out dub infused cut drive by evolving ethereal
atmospheres, echoing synth stabs and off-kilter drums. Following is 'Take
Heed' which embraces a more tool like approach via bumpy beats and circling
dub to keep things moving. On the flip, the original mix of 'Magic Silver' is
up first, showcasing the acid house influences of the artist, blending
together squelchy 303 licks with dub stab sequences and 808 drums. Bengoa's
Club Reshape of Magic silver then rounds out the package and tips things into
peak-time realms |

In
March 2018, Danny Berman aka Red Rack'em left behind the grey insanity of
Berlin and headed off to the idyllic Devon Analogue Studio for the first of
several productive musical retreats, giving him unprecedented access to high
end synths plus the time and space to create without distraction. After a
solid 18 months of activity post album, which combined some serious air
miles, relocation back to the UK (after nearly a decade living in East
Berlin) some pretty magical moments, he's back with a heavy EP of genre
crossing magic which ushers forth a more edgy, psychedelic sound. Like its
disco leaning predecessor, Wonky Techno Banger is just simply a track that
you have to have in your life. Combining a demented fairground melody, flappy
off beat bassline and manic peak time flavour, it's an absolute thumper which
has the potential to radically transform your night/life. Devon Analogue 4.2
comes from the same session and sees the Bergerac boss man go into euphoric
electro funk mode with distorted claps, an 'ecstasy' synth and live slap bass |

Records will be releasing 'Spaces' from Icelandic experimental producer
AAIIEENN this August. AAIIEENN is the solo project of electronic musician
Hallmar Gauti Halldórsson. Halldórsson first came to music though being a
mover and shaker in Iceland's punk and hardcore scene where he was the 'harsh
noise guy' with local band Distill the World. With AAIIEENN however,
Halldórsson moved away from the guitars and screaming to a fully electronic
world of experimental synth music and gorging on the mathematical
possibilities and expanses of arpeggio/sequencer driven ambient music.
'Calab-Yau' and 'Continuous Property 1' drip shards of pure crystalline sound
into deep crevasses as harmonic droplets ping of gleaming surfaces coated
with spongiform bass. The light and effervescent 'Euclidean' evokes classic
Ambient Works Aphex Twin, while 'Manifold' is more direct with a muscular and
sturdy bassline. Spaces closes with the fluttering and lush ambient sounds of
'Zariksi' that are carried into the skies by a pulsing and gliding techno
beat |

Keysound are proud to announce
the third installment in their Rollage sub-series. Following on from the
first ltd edition black label and the recent volume two Keysound Sessions
Anthem,' the C-troit' EP, is a 12' from Blackdown, with Dusk joining on co-production
duties. C-troit' is a name revived from a lost, unfinished track by Blackdown
in the very earliest roots' years of dubstep. A hybrid of the words Croydon'
and Detroit', it's a heuristic for the place between Greater London's
bass-lead music and the halcyon synths of early Detroit techno. Now that
there's a growing body of dark, 130bpm-ish rollage, from within the Keysound
camp and crews beyond (Jelly Bean Farm, Durkle Disco, Swamp81, Version &
Kaizen), the EP seeks to throw warm light into the shadows, with the tracks
Godlike Power', Clueless ft Dusk' and Halcyon Skies (Rollage mix).' The EP's
closing cut The Greatest Concert (RIP PMC)' was written by Blackdown in the
days immediately following the passing of his father |
