you went down the wrong alleyway, took a shortcut through the park or crossed
the wrong open space after dark in the UK in the 1970s, you stood a fair

Chilean prog band Embrujo began
as El Embrujo Ques Besa or Kissing Spell, formed by the guitarist, singer and
drummer Carlos Fernandez with chief songwriter Juan Carlos "Tato"
Gomez on bass and vocals and Ernesto "Kiko" Murillo on lead guitar,
with organist&flautist Ernesto Aracena and pianist/flautist Guillermo
Olivares joining later. Signing to Camilo Fernandez's Arena Producciones in
1970, debut LP -Los Pajaros- was issued under the Kissing Spell moniker, but
Chile's unstable political climate, subject to CIA meddling, saw them renamed
Embrujo for their coveted second album, the self-titled disc mixing subtle
Latin elements within their beautifully-delivered songs of quietly
contemplative psychedelic rock. A must-have for all South American psych fans

State Of Flow is back. After a 2
years hiatus since its last release, the Belgian label marks its return
bringing into play South America rising talents Manglus and Guillermo de
Caminos under their Aire Terra alias. With both guys busy keeping alive the vibrant
local scene, the pair have provided two massive Latino-ish percussive
originals that come packed with a remix by Roche Madame head Cesar Merveille.
Title cut "El Matoto" opens proceedings in a minimal-techy fashion
as pressing vocals meet captivating percussive layers and hollow rumbling
toms. On the flip, "Africandombe" howls out a repetitive, hypnotic
vocal, giving to the entire track an ancestral dimension, whilst twisted fxs
and textures try to distract you from the loopiness mood. Rounding out the
package, Berlin-based Cesar Merveille injects to the original a good dose of
analogue harm. A massive gloomy bassline rumbles undisturbed underneath

NEP was a loose multimedia
collective formed in 1982 Zagreb, ex-Yugoslavia. The founder Dejan Krsic
collaborated with various artists in a quest of re-thinking the stale
concepts of art history, position of the author and the barriers between pop
and elitist high culture. Heavily influenced by Walter Benjamin and Andy
Warhol in theory and Brian Eno and Kraftwerk in music, Krsic created NEP as
an umbrella term (meaning Nova Evropa or New Europe) of diverse rule-breaking
activities, covering graphic design, music, photography, video, news-media
and theoretical work. Musically NEP focused on experiments in ambient and
tape-music, self-released and hard to find compilation tapes like "The
Cassette Played Poptones" (1988). Deeply immersed in pop-culture,
politics and art theory Krsic's search for perfect pop music with cutting
critical edge peaked in 1989, the year 'Decadance' track was conceived in

Wilbur Harden - flugelhorn, Hugh Lawson - piano, Ernie Farrow - bass, and
Oliver Jackson - drums. Lateef's aesthetic was a perfect mixture of hard-driving
jazz and a variety of ethnic materials. Even though If compared to later
works, "Sounds of Yusef" is still very much rooted in Jazz while
the use of traditional ethnic instruments adds colors and flavors without
really deviating from the American Jazz tradition. Lateef shines on both
tenor sax and flute while the rhythm section swings hard throughout a varied
repertoire including an airy version of Strayhorn's ultra-classic "Take
the A Train" and a contemplative Lateef's original called
"Meditation" |

vinyl release with tongue-in-cheek puns, like the videogame frustration in
the title track, a sweet hybrid of Dopplereffekt-basslines and AFX-infused
melodies by Freek! Besides being a school teacher, a dedicated dj, a label
boss and a party organiser, Utrecht's most famous fluo-raver Freek Fabricius
also started producing a few years back. It's hard to believe that Lost My
Controller actually is Fabricius' debut EP. So matured and full of character
do the six tracks on this release sound. With a touch of vintage electro and
the melancholic side of IDM, yet with a unique sound of its own. Like the
aptly titled Pigs Are Here, where a stomping kick and gloomy synth set the
pace. Halfway through we suddenly receive a 'breaking news message' about an
illegal rave somewhere on the shores of northern England, complete with an
eye witness report. Images of running ravers immediately pop up. Fabricius
does not hide his admiration for Richard D. James on Lost My Controller. On
the contrary. He cultivates it and makes it his own. 'Aphex Twin is one of
the few artists that can make me cry', he once said in an interview. He meant
it. Lost My Controller has some beautiful intimate moments, like the sampled
rain on his attic window during 'Zolderraam' or the rolling closing track
'Mother'. In which a vintage Underworld- esque beat gently rubs against
Laurie Anderson's legs. Freek's EP is joint release between SoHaSo and
Marguerita Recordings, the label run by fellow Utrecht dweller Cosmic Force.

Chance Versus Causality is
perhaps the most intriguing of all of Cabaret Voltaire's records. After a gig
in Brussels in 1979 the band were approached by Babette Mondini and asked if
they would score a film she was working on at the time. Cabaret Voltaire made
the soundtrack without ever watching the footage, sent off the tapes to
Holland, and then . nothing. The trio never saw the film and, after a limited
release, it basically disappeared from the record. Now the Chance Versus
Causality OST has been resurrected by Mute for its first proper release |

Listening to it again today on a bright winters morning it was wonderfully
evocative and infused with the spirit of being in its wordless repetitive
riffing and spangled arpeggios. There may not be anything particularly
original going on here but it is very well executed and stands up to repeated

After
the success of the 2 Late 4 Love EP, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotional
Response with a double LP with a deeper perspective, experimenting in ambient
and drone textures, lucid techno travails and acid interludes. Recorded
between 1997 and 2017, the album was pieced together over the last six months
after Roy's archives were first feared lost and then found. Approached by the
label to release a follow up with something more introspective and personal,
it was discovered that a recent move to a new studio had led to over 20 years
of music being misplaced after it was believed they were mistakenly dropped
at a local charity store. However, deep in a box of what were thought to be
patch cables were in fact the decades worth of hard drives and here
presented, is a sample of those lost recordings. The nature of the music is
introspection, eschewing the acid beats and white noise for a personal
encounter between man and machine. The orchestral opening of the title track
gives way to the submarine beats, pulsing TB303 and gliding hats of Robinson
College 10 to set the outlook to come. Even with the scattering A Dim And
Distant Past waking lulled senses, the melodies and feel all lead to a pause
and reflect rather than jump and shout |

challenge the leader of the five element ninjas, Shaw Cuts lines up a heavy
squad on the next record, armed with versatile remixes of Farron's "Five
Element Ninjas EP": Pugilist, Substance, Jonas Friedlich and
Realitycheck. First off the mark, Pugilist launches into battle dealing
forceful blows with his version of "Liquid Shorts". Whirlwind
breaks, sharp drum patterns and cavernous chords, lacerate the ninja leader.
The heat is on! Substance rolls in to support, shredding the field with his
remix of "Contaship". With blood-spattered pads, a gargantuan
rolling groove and harmonic synth elements, he brings the villain to his
knees. Jonas Friedlich blazes in with his remake of "Brooklyn
Banks", catching the leader off-guard with dirty Hip-Hop rhythmics,

Plate
number two from LIITHELI steps up the game with N1MA "Ajam EP" The
word "ajam" in Estonian stands for "drive", as in
"electric drive". The title track - Ajam is a high-pressure techno
jam with a buzzing atmosphere thrusting through a tunnel of sound. It's a cut
from many a live recordings from the Ravi Workshops in Tallinn. This one was
recorded during a much needed break from writing music for a documentary film
- A jam to clear the head. Easing the pressure to bring softness on the flip
side is Construction Business - an unregulated situational soundscape of
random events. "Tanel, where's the red box - It's lost... - The grey
fixing plugs were inthere." A very live recording of the process of building
the Ravi Workshops in Tallinn. Drum machines, (modular) synths, sequencers
and laptops hooked up to a mixing desk and monitor speakers in a 50m2
concrete room, a portable recorder placed in the same space. People bustling
around with construction tools in their hands, at times passing the sound
setup and spontaneously twisting knobs, pushing faders. No-one knows the
score is being recorded |

Four Secret Weapons for the
Night' wäre sicher auch ein passender Titel für Katalognummer 11 aus dem
Hause Polyfon gewesen. Doch das erschien den stets angenehm zurückhaltenden
Label-Aktivisten aus Thüringens MiniMetropole Erfurt vielleicht ein ganz klein
wenig zu dick aufgetragen. Gerechtfertigt wäre der Name auf jeden Fall
gewesen. Schlussendlich aber haben wohl die gefühlten 12000 Jahre
Danceoor-Erfahrung der beteiligten Protagonisten die EP benannt. Dass das
Ganze dabei absolut fresh rüberkommt, steht außer Frage. Den Auftakt zu der
Mini-Compilation liefern Tino Bohne und Benjamin Brunn aka The Hangout
Project mit - I´m crazy about you', einer charmanten Elektronik-Nummer, die
durch ein wunderschön und dezent eingesetztes VocalSample sowie einer sowas
von überraschend loslegenden 4/4- Bassline überzeugt. Diese erinnert auch
sofort daran, dass man zum tanzen auf der Welt ist. Weiter geht es mit Le
Rubriques Abenteuern in der - Bar Celona'. Ob diese nun in Katalonien oder
Hessen steht, weiß man nicht |

Perc returns to Perc Trax for his
first original release of 2020 and his first full EP since 'Three Tracks To
Send To Your Ghost Producer' was released back in March 2019. 'Fire In
Negative' includes three tracks adapted from his live set at Reaktor's Unpolished
event in Amsterdam earlier of this year, plus another completed directly
after that set when the atmosphere and energy of that event was still fresh
in his mind. Title track and opener 'Fire In Negative' fuses crushing kicks
with covert art gallery recordings and the crackling flames of the title,
topped off with Ventolin-esque sine tones. Another statement track from Perc,
sidestepping the current trend for rave revivalism whilst matching its energy
toe to toe. 'E Mono' is a classic Perc drum track, skipping big builds for an
unexpected switch in the middle section, whilst 'Snare' goes in the opposite
direction, breaking down into two minutes of abrasive feedback before finally
kicking back in |
