Tyler Friedman returns to Kontra-Musik with
Epiphytic, an improvisational vortex of psychedelic modular synthesizer
lines, made in one continuous take. A stylistic shift from Friedman's
previous releases on Kontra, the album eschews percussion in favor of an
intense pulsing spectrality, situating the music both on the fringes of club
culture and in the concert hall. The title - Epiphytic - which refers to a
type of plant that grows on the surface of another, non-parasitically, is a
metaphor for the way the interlacing and divergent arpeggiations co-exist,
forming a larger harmonic structure. The system used in the production of the
album acts as a seed to be built upon in a live setting, where the piece can
evolve into more esoteric tonalities and rhythms. While Epiphytic is an
exploration of 7 limit Just Intonantion, future releases and performances
will grow into different tunings and tempos, shifting the genre between
fourth world fm, microtonal abstraction and clouds of noise bliss, generating
a work in permanent flux |

This time from the elusive “Mr Suspicious” 4 unique bits of techno remastered
and slowed down for the dance floors of 2020. Opening with “Surface Tension”
a hypnotic echoing melody and bouncy kick drums complemented perfectly by the
ride cymbal make it ideal for tension building. On the A2 “Bounce da gruv”
bubbling percussion, vocals layered up with rolling synth riff and swinging
hats make this a peak time banger. Turn over to the B for “Back in the pan” a
different take on an older track released in the mid 90’s more on a breaky
tip and layered with a glittering acid bass line. Then inspired by a Crystal
the B2 “Tourmaline” features rolling closed hats and bleepy percussion on a
progressive melodic techno track |

The
Master Scratch Band was first break-dance / hip-hop / electro funk band in
Yugoslavia in 1984. The band members were Zoran Vracevic, Zoran Jevtic and
Milutin Stoisiljevic, previously known as Data and Sizike. Jugoton, the
biggest label in Yugoslavia, published Data 7'' and MSB's 'Degout' 12'' with
limited edition cassette containing two bonus tracks. Impossible to find on
the collectors market, Fox & His Friends team in collaboration with
Jugoton / Croatia Records is releasing a full, complete version of the rare
"The Breakwar" tape, with tracks "Tonight" and
"Pocket" never pressed on vinyl. All tracks are sourced from
original studio tapes. With the kind help of Zoran Vracevic on credit list
and liner notes, this is now the ultimate Master Scratch Band album, released
originally in a year 1984 when break-dance was in the peak of its popularity
in Yugoslavia. While Data was synthpop, Sizike mellow synth-disco recorded in
private studio, this release is pure breaks and hip-hop electro, done
old-school way in one of the best studios in Yugoslavia, Enco Lesic's 'Druga
maca' in Belgrade |

We exhume one of the best kept
secrets of Norrköping death metal. Two great demo tapes released in 1991 and
1992 have been compiled into one vinyl with an extensive bio written by
founding member Tim Pettersson. Amenophis combined the classic old sounds of
Death, Possessed, and Celtic Frost with the grisly edge of early 90s Swedish
death metal. Some of the members also played in Darkified and Allegiance.
This compilation is an important piece of Swedish extreme metal history and a

Roman pianist and film composer
Armando Trovajoli scored over 300 feature films during his remarkable career.
Starting out in the 1930s as a player in Orchestra Rocco Grasso and Sesto
Carlini's beloved jazz orchestra, in 1949 he represented Italy at the Festival
du Jazz de Paris and he began composing films three years later. Jazz Piano,
released by RCA in 1959, saw Trovajoli fronting a quartet with three of his
regular orchestra members, namely drummer Sergio Conti, bassist/arranger
Berto Pisano and guitarist Enzo Grillini, sensitively tackling Monk's
"Round Midnight," relegating "Get Me To The Church On
Time" as rapid piano jazz, and plenty showtunes similarly reconfigured |

from the label is Romanian Mihai Popoviciu, considered one of the most
innovative eastern European producers of electronic music today. He opens
with ‘Biology’, a bubbly, deep cut groove with slick hits gliding up top.
It’s a track full of warmth that sinks you into a glazed-eye reverie.
Dessous, Lefroom and Inermu associate James Dexter is a young but vital
talent who represents the new wave of artists that are simmering in the
London deep house underground. His ‘And Then’ has long legged, dubbed out
kick drums that make for a cavernous groove, whilst smeared, warped chords

Hard to believe that a prime
post-punk era Martin Hannett production has languished in relative obscurity
for so long. Basement 5 were a short-lived, all-black London band operating
in a similar dub & punk territory to early Public Image Ltd and Killing
Joke. At one point fronted by Don Letts before photographer Dennis Morris
took over, this, their sole LP, features Blockhead 'Gentleman' Charles
Charles sitting in on drums. There's a nice balance between a heavy and
precise rhythm section and scratchy, sloppy guitar and vocals, lyrically
politicised as you'd expect, with Hannett applying some effects familiar from
his work with Joy Division and others |

Techno figurehead Richie Hawtin
releases his first album under his much-adored Plastikman guise since 2003.
If you need a reminder, Plastikman was responsible for two of the definitive
1990s minimal techno records in the shape of 1993's -Sheet One- and 1994's
-Musik-, but has been on the back burner as a recording project since 2010's
-Slinky- 12". -Ex- was recorded live at the Guggenheim Museum in New
York last year at the invitation of of Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons.

Skulduggery'
is of interest to fans of the Cook 'n' Jones sound, not least as it includes
2 tracks on which Paul Cook played & produced. Both sides of this oft
forgotten single 'Be like Me' & 'Pain In Love' are featured on this
collection. they gained the attention of Paul Cook & Steve Jones. During
'79, the group found themselves without a drummer. Paul stepped in for the
recording of the single as well as sitting in the producer's chair. The
results (eventually released in '80) are two powerful slabs of musical muscle
in keeping with the Cook 'n' Jones tradition.The band's New York Dolls /MC5
/Iggy influences. Crude in execution, but gloriously trashy, reflecting the

Devoted to music from a very young age, Nomad has been writing electronic

Cymbol is the brainchild of a twisted mind-meld specialising in various forms
of sonic manipulation via techno and fragmented electro. Formed in 2001 by
former members of Wave 7 as a reaction to the generic club music of the era,
their style is a fusion of intense polyrhythms and intricate synthesis
composed with a combination of software and electronics ranging from harmonic
electro soundscapes through to dissonant 'baby in the blender' doom montages.

In 1964 and 1966, when Serge
Gainsbourg participated in the two public recordings at the “Maison de la

first set of remixes of Calm’s By Your Side got plenty of props for sound
quality as well as their ability to get people grooving. Now the label serves
up some more remixes, this time from legendary figures Mark Barrott
(International Feel) and My Friend Dario. Up first is Barrott, the long time
slow motion master whose downtempo, ambient, new age and electronic fusions
very much set out the Balearic template way back in the nineties. ‘Space Is
My Place’ (Mark’s Re<>Imagination to the Sacred Heart Center) is an
enchanting and tropical reworking with exotic percussion and liquid drums
that gentle sway to and fro like a raft at sea. It’s another escapist,
transportive track from Barrott that takes you to the other side of the
world. My Friend Dario returns to Hell Yeah after his exquisite Calamari
Fritti EP late last year with more of his worldly infused sounds. His Etna
Vision of ‘Shadows and Lights’ is a glistening affair with loosely jumbled
drums and romantic keys that ring out into a balmy night sky. It’s musical
and blissful as always with this artist. Once again here Hell Yeah have come

nowhere, in Switzerland, using bare concrete walls as an echo chamber. The
pace is slow, atmosphere is bleak, tone is melancholic, drums are evil. It

Strahinja Arbutina is fast

aptly named Croatian Households, more of a broken piece but still haunting in

by no one else than the living legend and overall wonderful human that is DJ
DEEP from Paris. I've met Cyril via booking him at one of my parties ages
ago. When I opened Blitz he became part of the closer family and started to
play regularly. Over the time we exchanged ideas and thoughts about music and
life in general and when I told him that I'm planning to start a label, he
instantly sent me VAINCRE, a timeless 3-track masterpiece that sits in

Robert Rental is an artist as influential as
he is overlooked. An anchor of the early British DIY and post-punk scene, his
name is most frequently uttered alongside illustrious collaborators such as
Thomas Leer and Daniel Miller. Dark Entries and Optimo ally to illuminate
some of Rental?s early solo works with an expanded reissue of his debut 7?
Paralysis /A.C.C.. Both labels have previously excavated Rental?s catalog; we
reissued the collaborative LP with Glenn Wallis in 2017, and Optimo released
a collection of demos in 2018. The double A-side Paralysis /A.C.C. 7? was
self-released on Regular Records in 1978, around the same time as Leer?s
Private Plane/International 7?. The record is a perfect document of the DIY
ethos. It was recorded with the assistance of Leer in the council flat that
Robert lived in, using an assortment of budget electronics: a Roland drum
machine, a Stylophone, an Electroharmonix DrQ, and a TEAC A3440 4-track
recorder. The record?s sleeves were surreptitiously photocopied after hours
at the offices of Virgin Records by Robert's partner Hilary Farrow, and the
labels were hand-stamped The initial print run was a scant 650 copies |

FRAK are back on track with this
dreamy album with deep dark hypnotic slow rhythmic tracks. This is
experimental analog and haunting dancemusic at slow BPMs which gives you a
glimpse of swedish smalltown dystopia in all its glory. The A1 track might
give the impression that this is a romantic record and the A side in general
will make big city people feel the urge to move to small towns again, but on
the B-side it just gets darker and weirder (the smalltown kinda reveals its
ugly underbelly) and it all ends with a track that would make the taped
nipples fake fetishists in techno city shiver. I could say you need a mask to
play this out, but lets not take it that far. For old fans of FRAK this
record both delivers (A-side) and challenges (B-side). Me, I want doubles.

collection. Round and Round comes three years after Momentum, Tanzmann's last

at the time. This third full length is a more widescreen overview of his

written in the last year, but reflects every facet of the artist's sound, so

Following
2019’s release of Azymuth’s Demos (1973-75), two more home-recorded demo
tracks by the Brazilian psychedelic jazz-funk masters have surfaced from a
tape in drummer Ivan Conti’s private archive. These five-decade old
recordings by the young band show the maturity, musicianship and distinctive
style that saw Azymuth become one of the most important groups in Brazilian
history. Featuring an instrumental take on Roberto and Erasmo Carlos’ 1969
Jovem Guarda hit “As Curvas da Estrada de Santos”, and spacey psych-folk
oddity “Zé e Paraná”, the new 7” release via Far Out Recordings shines yet
more light on this critical period for Azymuth. As is the case with many of
Brazil’s pop icons, Roberto and Erasmo Carlos had been backed by Bertrami,
Malheiros and Conti either on stage, in the studio, or with compositions (in
Bertami’s case) since the late sixties. Conti notes that “As Curvas da
Estrada de Santos” was a big hit in Brazil when it came out in ‘69 and had
already been covered by Elis Regina a year later. But where both Elis’
version and the original were grand pop-rock ballads |

On
the band's third album 'In Velvet', Nordmann reinvent themselves, causing a
profound shift in their distinctive sound. They trade in the rock influences
in favour of synths, electronic textures and beats. The new music is more
reflective, though without ever losing focus on the instincts. Since the
release of their sophomore album, the four members of Nordmann have been
exploring their respective solo and side projects. This resulted in fresh
insights and inspirations coming to the table when they reunited at the
mothership to work on new Nordmann music. The foursome decided to let their
minds wander freely and fully explore the possibilities of the recording
studio, not worrying about the limitations of their live setup until later in
the process. This is quite a turn for an outfit that has always taken their
live performances as a starting point for new music. The new approach enabled
a new focus on song and melody, allowing the band to experiment without

Producer
Jasper Maekelberg (Faces On TV, Bazart, Hypochristmutreefuzz, Warhola,
Balthazar...) - who also recorded Nordmann's debut as an inexperienced
producer - undoubtedly plays a big role in this giant musical jigsaw falling
into place. To overcome the physical limitations of playing the new music
live, Nordmann hired Thijs Troch as new synth player and additional
guitarist. In this new constellation, Nordmann is ready to conquer new hearts
and territory. 'In Velvet' is their first release on renowned indie imprint
Unday Records, home to Trixie Whitley, Millionaire, The Bony King of Nowhere
and Mauro Pawlowski. Some ten years ago, Nordmann came into being after a
successful improv session that was destined to last. The four musicians
succeeded in fusing the liberties of improv jazz with the intensity of rock
music, and their shows immediately caused a stir in their native Belgium.
They managed to capture the energy of their live gigs on their debut album
'Alarm' (2015) while follow up 'The Boiling Ground' from 2017 gained them the
status of household name and must-see live band. They toured the record on a
50 date stretch across Europe |

Thunderblender
is a trio from Brussels led by Sam Comerford. Together with two young
trailblazers of the Belgian jazz scene, Hendrik Lasure (SCHNTZL) and Jens
Bouttery (Hi Hawaii), they play Comerford's dark and unpredictable
compositions with joy and abandon. The music explores intense emotions,
moving between order and chaos, free improvisation and intricate writing,
heavy grooves and fragile intimate moments. It's a European band with a nod
to the American avant-garde, influenced by Henry Threadgill and Tim Berne,
with references to 20th century classical harmony. Jens Bouttery augments his
drum set with left-handed bass synth, giving him complete freedom as a
one-man rhythm section. Without a conventional bass player, Lasure is free to
use the full range of the grand piano, sometimes with live sampling.
Comerford plays tenor and the rarely-heard bass saxophone, with playing that
could be characterised as equal parts abrasive and lyrical. They have toured
around Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany, Sam being awarded
"Best Instrumentalist" at Tremplin d'Avignon. All three members are
laureates of the "Toots Thielemans Award" from the KCB |

Considering all the musical
styles that Jaffa Surfa is taking inspiration from (from the soul/funk/disco
trio, through all shades of house music and all the way up to techno) it
doesn't come as a surprise to see him churning out productions in various styles
even within one release. The rolling yet deep "Psy Lance"
complements the playful and trippy "Bazz" nicely just as the
beatless DJ-tool "Preacha Bonus" |
