the first Turkish rock artist, he and his band reputedly playing Fats Domino
and Elvis covers in 1957, by combining rock n' roll and Turkish traditional
music, he spearheaded Anatolian rock and became the leading Turkish
psychedelic practitioner. East-west hybrid Elektronik Turkuler was an
innovative concept album marrying rock with Turkish trad, in contrast, the
1976 release 2 is thoroughly grounded in Turkish traditional music, the
understated delivery holding just a touch of psychedelia and a proto/disco

“We
recorded the music spontaneously and without preparation. Even in some cases,
the drums were laid down first so that I could be as unrestricted as
possible. No MIDI connection or computers were used in the production. A
concept and direction would be imagined and we would both address as best we
could with what we had at our disposal. Because of the COVID 19 Pandemic,
mixing down the tracks was an obstacle, but we manage to complete the tracks
from a long-distant process between the cities we and the studio engineer
lives. Over the course of a few weeks, we were able to complete all the mixes
to our satisfaction”. The album: “Counter Active is designed to show an
example of two minds joining together without compromise or without any
creative conditions. There were no barriers when recording. The music
represents who we are and exactly what we want to say. The title “Counter
Active” represents the task of having an initiative. A plan and blueprint.
The front cover design was actually made before the music was final. In fact,
it was this image that we used to remind ourselves of the boundless freedom
we’re dealing with” |

Obscure
Minnesota-based power trio Highway has a long and convoluted history. In
1965, guitarist & vocalist Steve Murphy joined The Epicureans, a band
formed from the ashes of The Pacers and The Corsairs, both previously active
in the town of Fairmont, located southeast of the state capital, Minneapolis.
The group issued a couple of singles along the way (both on small
independents, which unfortunately failed to generate much interest), and
ultimately morphed into Highway in 1972, then with Murphy and fellow
Epicureans Tim Messerli on keyboards and vocals, Tom Olson on drums and John
Goossen on bass. After opening for REO Speedwagon in Wisconsin, Olson was
replaced by Dan Cammarata and Goossen by Eric Bannister. The resultant
group's self-titled debut album was recorded at Westminster Studio, near Fort
Dodge in neighbouring Iowa, during a time when Highway was based in the tiny
town of Ceylon, Minnesota, privately pressed in only 500 copies, it has since
become a highly sought-after item for its unusual blend of melodic hard-rock
lead guitar, psychedelic garage rock and wistful, country-tinged blues rock |

It
gives us great pleasure to introduce the baddest new voice in the land,
Napoleon Demps. A Flint Michigan native, he grew up listening to Soul
luminaries OV Wright, Willie Hutch and Sam Cooke, whose influence led Demps
down a path to becoming an accomplished Soul singer himself - scoring his
first hit at the age of 24 in the still thriving Southern Chitlin Circuit of
the early aughts. Demps, having been a long time Daptone fan, connected with
the Dap-Kings at a soundcheck at a Detroit nightclub for an impromptu
rendition of “A Change is Gonna Come.” Bosco Mann was floored by his voice
and swore they would meet again. Last year, with that sweet soulful voice
still ringing in his ears, Mann would reconnect with Demps and bring him out
to Penrose Recorders in Riverside, California to finally cut his first
Daptone side. "Norma Jean" is a funky soul groover that lands
somewhere between the nuanced big city sounds Chicago and Detroit were

and producer David Holmes is welcomed to the Late Night Tales fraternity with
an evocative collection of personal songs and music, peppered with exclusive
new material and rare gems. By now, I think we all know David Holmes, right
There's acid house Holmes, with bone-rattling Chicago jams and Detroit
destroyers, break-digger Holmes responsible for the grittily shaking 'Let's
Get Killed' and seminal Essential Mix compilation (which brought Sixto
Rodriguez to people's attention, and then there's soundtrack Holmes. His most
enduring and vital source of musical inspiration - cinema - plugged into
David's rst solo record 'This Film's Crap, Let's Slash the Seats' and
inspired 2000's 'Bow Down to the Exit Sign', created as the soundtrack to a
not-yet-made movie. Ofcial soundtracks have been bountiful, including scores
for Soderbergh's Out Of Sight and Ocean's trilogy, '71, Hunger and Good
Vibrations. In a series of personal songs sung by himself, David's last solo
album 'The Holy Pictures' explored inuences of La Düsseldorf, The Jesus and
Mary Chain and early Brian Eno. His Unloved collaboration with Keefus Ciancia
and Jade Vincent then took us on a musical journey full of raw 60s pop-noir,
psychedelia and French Ye Ye with a contemporary twist. Somehow he's also
found time to produce records by Primal Scream and Jon Spencer Blues
Explosion. Unsurprisingly, for someone au fait with matters cinematic, this
Late Night Tales conjures up its own mindmovies. It's not only packed with
the judiciously selected nuggets for which his mixes are noted but also
stuffed with original material, including collaborations with BP Fallon and
Jon Hopkins and an amazing new reading of 10cc's 'I'm Not In Love' by
Holmes-produced Song Sung. In fact, there's a Celtic thread running through
the whole journey with Stephen Rea's reading of an extract from Seamus
Heaney's AENEID BOOK VI - Elsewhere Anchises. Among the other gems included
here are David Crosby's lush 'Orleans', Buddy Holly's celestial 'Love Is
Strange' and the Children Of Sunshine's 'It's A Long Way To Heaven'. David
Holmes loves music. It's a way of expressing the sometimes inexpressible or
the inconsolable, a questing desire to nd out just what is over the next
hill. It's no surprise to learn he's a keen walker. Always on the move,
headphones on, lost in some reverie or piece of music, the soundtrack to his
life, the stuff that feeds his imagination. I walk a lot. It's amazing for
listening to music: your phone or your emails aren't going and you're just in
the forest listening to music. It's so intimate. Anyway, I was listening to
the KLF's Chill Out album, which still sounds amazing, but it triggered an
idea with concrete sounds through travelling and movement. And one of the
things I was trying to do was to use this idea not just break up the moods
but also as a metaphor for moving through life and arriving in different
destinations or arriving at different stages in different parts of your life.
Memory, Love, Living, Family, Friendship, Healing, Death and The Afterworld
are some of the themes I wanted to explore within this record. Although these
strong themes and tracks are personal to me, I also wanted it to be a great
listen that was unpredictable yet had a seamless ow - a journey that was
personal to me yet to the listener a great compilation of music that they may
or may not have heard before. I hope I've succeeded in the later.' David

in Scotland. Since 1989 The Horrorist has released over 80 12" singles
and four full length albums. His massive discography adorns every elite

Fred's delicate delivery, passionate lyrics, overdubs and a mid-tempo soul
dance groove, it all really comes together. There's a gentle southern breeze
in the air and can we really demand less from Espoo's finest. We are nowhere
nearer to cracking the enigma of Fred's personality, but he does seem less
complicated than on his first release. "Sweet Thing" is exactly

Timofeev
was born and raised in Riga, Latvia and has recently lived in London, Berlin,
Rotterdam and New York. While often collaborating with artists from these
various scenes - including Kaspars Grosevs (Zolitude, Quantum Natives, 2017),
Bryce Hackford (Safe [Exits], Spring Theory, 2020), and nihiti (For Ostland,
Lo Bit Landscapes, 2014) - Timofeev's work has always stubbornly remained his
own. His music, just one branch of his work, is complimented by experimental
games, drawings, paintings and performances. Timofeev's output is united by
an interest in systems that are interwoven to the point of absurdity; logic
is pushed to the limits of comprehension. This is evident in his self-playing
simulations, labyrinthine works on paper and throughout the new album. Each
track on Exocursion consists of mutating iterations of a single loop, growing
and occasionally contracting between cycles. There is something undeniably
Eastern European to it. The modal harmonies conjure a stroll through a
decaying landscape littered with post-Soviet monuments, while its repetitive
nature calls to mind an expansive horizon of monotonous civic infrastructure |

Portuguese scfi maker Norbak is back home after his "Faktor EP"
from January 2019. These non clubbing days look like the perfect scenario for
listening to long distance works, so here you have this brand new album to
enjoy at your private soundsystem. "Flesh to Ashes" will be
released both physically and digitally, with an extra track on the
downloadable version. Norbak is well known for his precision and deepness,
always pushing forward production wise, focusing on the details and sound
design aspects. The album gravitates between beatless cuts, broken beats,
profound exercises and virtual dancefloor weapons. "Intro" and
"Camera" (the extra digital track) belong to the first category,
"The third morality" is the broken cut, "Flesh to ashes"

You
can call them a »supergroup«, but Moderat understands that it’s the »group«
aspect that makes them interesting. Gernot Bronsert, Sebastian Szary (aka
Modeselektor) and Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) have been working together as a
trio almost as long as their two separate projects have existed. We’ve seen
their collaboration grow from »laptop boy-band,« (as Ring playfully puts it)
in 2003—with computers synched using software Ring himself had written,
because at the time, »there was just no live performance software around.Ring
confesses that Moderat wasn’t »really meant to be a recording act ,« with
Bronsert agreeing that, »it was really just about fun.« This maybe explains
the six-year break that followed Moderat’s first EP before they finally
returned in 2009 with their selftitled debut album. Intent on creating
something that contrasted with their own projects, the group started the
cycle which blossoms on their second album, aptly titled II, culminating now
in the trilogy’s completion, III. Whereas I was the combination of two
separate entities, II brought the members closer together, and in III, the
final chapter in the trilogy, Moderat sounds like one band. Both Szary and
Ring will tell you that Moderat moved progressively from making tracks towards
a more traditional writing approach of making songs – a process more fully
realized on III. That’s partly why the vocals have become more prominent |

Mostly,
you hear Ring singing (there are no guests this time), as he so often does as
Apparat, but listen closely to »Ghostmother« to hear Bronsert and Szary
backing him up. Stepping out of their comfort zone is the kind of thing that
helped create their interplay between pop and electronics; doing it right won
them the Resident Advisor Best Live Act honor as early as 2009, and they
continue to gain popularity while remaining independent and underground.
Szary describes the idea behind Moderat as, »imagin[ing] yourself sitting in
the cinema and watching a movie with an incredible soundtrack.« This is true
with Moderat in general, but III in particular pairs an emotional pull with
sensual imagery, creating dynamic sound and depth with lyrics such as »the
calming scent of lavender fills the air,« or »burning bridges light my way.«
You’d have to ask them whether they’re intending to manipulate the listener
in the same way that John Williams or Hans Zimmer might with traditional
orchestras. One of the best parts of Moderat is their use of electronics to
achieve orchestral diversity. They update the songwriting tradition with an
intriguing palette, borne of careful attention and skill, informed by their
»experiences with sounds of nearly 25 years of suband club culture. Let’s not
forget that these three were brought together by Berlin’s now legendary rave
scene. With this as their common foundation as individuals, III signifies
Moderat’s maturation in modern pop — an achievement shared under their collective
belt |

Adding
a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep
pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos - are set to
release their highly anticipated debut album 'Crooks & Lovers' on Scuba's
Hotflush label in July. Mount Kimbie's first two EPs - 'Maybes' and 'Sketch
On Glass' - seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within
earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like
listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone
mind - albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other
minds. Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released
last year with 'Sketch On Glass' recently undergoing reworks from the likes
of Faulty DL, SCB (Scuba's darker techno alias) and their sometime
collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming
hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in
London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio. Dom and
Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls
that was previously a mental asylum - where the ceilings were still
ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: 'a cold, joyless,
concrete building - the sort of building where you'd drop a pen and the sound
would just go on and on in an echo.' Armed with found sound snips and a siege
mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London's ambience into rhythm, its
chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain - the hard-earned spaces of
Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper's
sad-eyed glow, D'Angelo's pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil
Elvrum's Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti's swollen 'Twin Peaks' atmospheres
find a cradle in Madlib's lax lope. The band's sound and response to the
dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from
etiquette and genre codes, 'Crooks & Lovers' floats through dubstep and
hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to

London-born
producer Colin Lindo aka Nubian Mindz is not your average predictable artist.
You know his stuff's gonna be good, but there's a solid chance you'll be
surprised with a thing or two in every track. Similar approach applies here.
Generally speaking, the music is deep and rich, yet very direct and club
ready, but with plenty of those unpredictable moments which made us go crazy
for these tracks in the first place. A1 - "Aqua Lifeforms" is
perhaps the least intense cut on the record, a sort of a slow grower which
builds up momentum by layering sounds and pads. A2 - "Body Mover"
is exactly what the title tells you. Crunchy peak time tune for the dance
floor, with shuffling broken beats wrapping around deep chords that hint what's
happening on the flip side. B1 - "Doorway To Her" is a nod to the
classic deep techno chord-ish approach. Well, sort of. The song lets you
think that until the first curveball just before the half of the track. After
that, it's just deeper than deep. B2 - "Pulsing Hearts" is another
well-crafted dance floor cut. The track moves from deep meditative vibe to
subtle acid tripping, just to be finished with a proper bass workout |

Klaus Benedek delivers us this time with - Calm Before The Storm an
extraordinary piece of music. This over 9 minute journey bundles the sound of
current deep house with a breakbeat rhythm. This track takes its time and
builds up to a smooth string chorus that will certainly give you goosebumps.
The B-Side on the other hand stays more traditionally in the house sector.
First we engaged the service of Vienna's MPC wizard Roman Rauch (Philpot,
Quintessentials, Tenderpark) to give KB's track - Still Daydreaming a harder
edge, while the EP's title track on B2 bounces with it's hypnotic filtered
hookline the listener into new heights. Give this release a try! It is

Angel-Ho
is known as one of the founders of Non Worldwide, alongside Chino Amobi and
Nkisi. Highly regarded as a DJ and electronic music producer, on 'Death
Becomes Her' she shifts things up to another level. Pulling on inspiration
from her flamboyant favourites from Lady Gaga, Missy Elliot, and Bjork
through to Kanye West, this ambitious, artful and sometimes radical album of
neo-pop pushes the pop framework even further, often teetering on the brink
of vertiginous chaos and dissonance, whilst slowly revealing its depth and
grandeur once you settle into its sound world. Alongside a cast of
collaborators that include French producer Nunu, South African producer Baby
Caramel, Asmara Maroof from Nguzunguzu, Bon and Gaika, Angel re-orientates
the usual trans-atlantic pop sound to encompass a brace of experimental,
diasporic producers to create beats that alternate between angular,
propulsive, murky, loose, abrasive and breezy. On top of these often advanced
rhythms, she also raps and sings for the first time with lyrics about love,
sex, glamour and struggle, universal fantasies, treated with an ambiguity
that restructures the narrative within a trans-identity. Her choice of guest
MCs also reflects this energetic queering with K-$ and Qweezy from Cape Town,
plus underground Asian American rapper K-Rizz laying down assertive bars. On
'Death Becomes Her', Angel-Ho carves out a new space with her unique take on
contemporary pop. Overflowing with charisma, sometimes reminiscent of Grace
Jones, this album is fiercely sassy and celebratory. It feels like the start
