Most
listeners only became aware of Billy Preston as a solo artist after he signed
to Apple Records in the late 1960s. But he'd been recording for a long time
prior to that, dating back to when he was a teenager. This instrumental album
for Sam Cooke's SAR label (issued on its sister Derby imprint) was cut in
March 1963, when Preston was still going to high school in Los Angeles. The
very fact that it's wholly instrumental indicates that it's pretty early in
Preston's evolution, and though he does play some piano, it's really on the
more uptempo, organ-dominated tunes where he hits the best groove. In truth,
these aren't any great shakes even when it comes to soul organ instrumentals,
but they have a nice swinging bounce that places them a cut above period
background music, though they fall a good ways short of being spellbinding.
The slower numbers (including covers of hits by Sam Cooke and Ray Charles)
verge on easy listening. In contrast, the more urgent cuts are cookin', with
bop, jazz, and gospel influences spicing up the soul & R&B recipe |

album was poorly received by critics and if we exclude a 1975 reissue on Contour

Moviegoer is a declared journey through Pop arrangements of iconic film music

Boasting
a catalogue of distinctive music Funnuvojere turned two this year. Its eight
release comes from Clarinets the new alias of Tbilisi based Gacha Bakradze.
Invisible Path is the title of this EP, a name that seems to reference
Gacha's own nimble movements across cities and genres. It started in 2015
with a rather ambient LP with Apollo Records, and has recently seen him
releasing a third LP with Barcelona's Lapsus Records. Despite this new skin,
Gacha's identity can still be strongly felt in Clarinets. The four tracks
composing this EP highlight Bakradze's mastership in designing harmonies.
Graceful frequencies rise from the title track, driven by a steady arpeggio
that builds and explodes in multiple directions. 'Dry Bridge' uses classic
balearic sounds to decorate a powerful bass line, evoking an accelerated
sunset at sea. The same balearic iterations define the deeply emotional
'Knee', in which the sound breathes and expands skywards. The closing track
'Afternoon' is a warm house ballad to round-off the last moments of a long
after-hours session |

that? It's a venture we all have been looking forward to for a long time. As
an artist who has become an integral part of the Liquicity family since his
debut "Dreamcatcher" release in 2016, Edlan has taken us on a
journey with some incredible releases over the years. From his recent
"Take A Bow" single to the "Go Back Home" EP. But his
next project is a particularly special destination - Edlan's debut album,
"Landmarks"! It couldn't be a more fitting title for a project
representing a landmark occasion for Edlan. Three years in the making, the
album is one directed at appreciating the moments in life bringing us joy.
For Edlan, times spent road tripping around Europe with his parents were some
of the most joyful, and it's this inspiration he has built the story of
Landmarks around. Unfortunately, we couldn't rent a car big enough to fit the
entire Liquicity family in... But it has always been the Liquicity community
ambition to take everyone on a journey to positive horizons - especially at

Gesture". Catartsis and Otone explore, both in their collaborative and

Portuguese
artist Lake Haze (Goncalo Salgado) makes his return to Shall Not Fade with an
album of spacious club music. Salgado is a key player in Portuguese musical
exports, delivering masterful blends of techno grooves and retro melodies,
and released his debut LP on E-Beamz in 2019. This second LP is titled Sun
Rising On Concrete Landscapes. This record explores further the atmospheric,
slightly melancholic timbre to Salgado's music. The use of reverb across the
LP elucidates a sense of looking back to the past; "The Rave That Saved
My Life" sounds like echoes from a distant memory. It turns the sounds
of the rave into something sombre, expansive and scattered with space age
breaks. The title track feels dramatic, starting with melodic loops and
scattered percussion but building into an untamed electro banger. The sci-fi
theme develops in a gorgeous soundscape of minimalist synth stabs in
"She Took Me To Her Favourite Club", while "Always By Your
Side" lingers in echoing percussion; the purposefully dated snare gives
it some hints of an 80s ballad - deeply retro and deeply emotional. Salgado
turns to more raw, club-ready sounds like the scattered breaks and electronic
sound effects of "Neurotoxins Dancing On My Tongue" or the punching
kick and creeping acid trills of "Liquid Serotonin". His skills as
a producer are clear as he constructs the cavernous "Digital
Petals" with reminiscences of classic trance sounds. The expansive LP
closes with "Emotional Encore". It's an industrial retro chugger
with the dust of lofi sounds across it, eclectic and headsy |

Barcelona-based
DJ, crate digger and producer Lis Sarroca makes her debut on Shall Not Fade's
coloured vinyl series marking the tenth release on the imprint. Taking
influence from her extensive travels - before lockdown hit - Sarroca mixes
classy 90s house rhythms with standout melodies. No Wait EP follows on from
her 2020 release on Hot Haus Records. Sarroca describes her music as
"danceable, energetic, deep and warm", an ethos reflected
throughout this EP. Despite dabbling in variations on dance music, stripped
back disco to punchy tech house rhythms, this record is accomplished and
consistent, coming together to deliver memories of sweaty summer club nights.
"No. Wait" references French filter house, pairing a chugging bass
and booming kick drum with sparkly disco keys into one very sultry track. In
"La Neta" Sarocca turns her attention to electro with the
squelching bassline and drum machine loops but uplifting chords bring it back
to house roots. There's a little bit of Kraftwerk in "Round &
Round", a hypnotic pulsing track with synths of a distinctly German
sound palette; it's the darkest moment on the record. The B-side is expansive
feel-good house, "Hi Montana" plays with dramatic strings while
"Get This Right" is a certified summer anthem of sharp chord stabs
and clean bassline made for the beer garden. No Wait closes with
"AX", a piece of fun cowbell-smattered organ house |

The Graveyard' is the second full length of the Occult Doom band 1782. In
this album there is a leap in quality as the production is much better than
the previous releases. Eight tracks and 43 minutes of pure dark Doom, with
slow and powerful riffs, and heavy and massive drumming. After the recording
of 'Doom Sessions Vol.2', the band immediately enters the studio and records
the heaviest tracks they have done so far, and they have done it while
maintaining that catchy state they have always had. Here too there are
featurings, Nico Sechi on organ (Hammond in '1782' and 'Celestial Voices' in
the debut album) and Alfredo Carboni's Synth. As in the eponymous debut

Joel
Holmes is a phenomenon that fits perfectly into the musical scenario of the
next years. 35-year-old american jazz pianist and 4 times Grammy nominated.
He was the musical director of Carl Craig’s Synthesizer ensemble as well as
the keyboarder in legendary Grammy wining band of Roy Hargrove (the IT jazz
artist from the late 1990ies, who later died.) Holmes is always hunting for
the new, so he moved to Berlin a few years ago. Being interested in what’s
happening in that new dance world. Similar to Jazzers from the 1970ies like
Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones who turned into disco stars Joel, the jazzer
wanted to connect with the new Berlin electronic scene. He succeeded, teamed
up with upcoming London house kid Cody Currie and the Toy Tonics crew who is
working on new sounds in Berlin that connect the organic and jazz musicians
scene with the dance and house world. Developing a new style of Jazz-House…
(that has nothing to do with sampled jazzy‘ house! If you know what we mean).

Following
on from last year’s album AurAA, Ellen Allien proudly unveils the first remix
package, featuring four fresh takes on her original productions. AurAA was
the techno queen’s ninth album in as many years, as she continues to channel
her creative energy into full-length releases, as well as various other
projects. Staying active and positive through the difficulties of the past
year, Ellen has maintained a constant presen- ce, sharing live DJ sets from
her balcony, or astonishing settings around Berlin, and a continuous flow of
new music, supporting artists through her labels and keeping the spirit of

released the highly acclaimed Rivers/Tokyo ASMR on Crosstown Rebels
last year, Berlin’s Emanuel Satie returns to the label this March with the
powerful Personal Liberation EP, showcasing the deep and
emotive characteristics that Emanuel brings to his accomplished productions.
Tribal-esque percussion leads the way in title track Personal
Liberation, progressing with haunting synths, dramatic keys and a
hypnotising vocal. A track that subtly builds throughout, Keys to
Jupiter is a moody yet blissful cut of electronic excellence, enhanced
with divine piano keys. Last up, Somewhere Else In Time is a trippy

The musical exchange between Paul Rose (Scuba) and Luke Slater
began last summer when the Hotflush boss put his touch to Slater’s 1997
classic ‘Love’, dedicating it to London’s Kings Cross raving institution
Bagleys, where he first heard the track. Slater’s gift back to Scuba is
similarly stirring, taking his hand to the glistening This Is For You’, an
early 2020 highlight. The ‘Luke Slater Long Version’ serves as a proper
electronic jam session charting a course from dubby techno climes, to
ecstatic string-laden builds, jazzy introspection and dreamy pads over a
thrilling 22 minutes. Epic in every way. “I was honoured to remix the Luke

The “Vince Montana Tribute” (Louie Vega and Rick Wilhite from
Detroit Rework) is a heartfelt and masterful production in which 2021 Grammy
Award Nominee Louie demonstrates his appreciation for the disco sounds that
he grew up on in the iconic borough of Bronx, NYC. The inspiration came about
through an edit Rick sent to Louie. Louie added some of his own editing
touches, and the resulting track got big response whenever Louie played it at
his headlining sets. Given Louie’s longtime love and respect for Vince
Montana, he decided to create an even bigger musical project. Bringing in
Elements of Life band members Gene Perez (Bass), Axel Tosca (Fender Rhodes)

release on Rekids and dropped as the label celebrated a milestone ten years.
It unquestionably became one of Techno’s biggest tracks ever made. Two years
later, the landmark production receives outstanding remixes from two of the
genre’s most salient artists: NovaMute producer Charlotte de Witte, who’s
just collaborated with Chris Liebing on her newly launched KNTXT imprint, as
well as the ever-impressive Patrick Mason and Radio Slave who team up again
as SRVD. Charlotte de Witte’s remix of ‘Another Club’ marches forward with

package from Marco Faraone’s 2020 ‘No Filter’ LP, Radio Slave recruits fellow
dance music titans Chris Liebing and Mathew Jonson for a pair of remixes on
one of dance music’s most essential imprints. Liebing steps up for the
A-side, delivering a knockout take on the original. Creeping ambience and
deep bass weight bubble throughout the track as additional percussion and synthesis
unravel towards a climactic finish. On the flip, Jonson turns in a
distinctively delicate version, clocking in just shy of twelve minutes.

drums and claps each add an element of texture that ties everything together
and any let off or respite is short lived before diving back in head first to
the sonic storm. ‘Joker Smile’ is up next. Keeping with the tone of the
record so far a heavily weighted acidic lead orchestrates a foreboding
atmosphere from the get-go. The furious acid notes swirl in and out before
blistering hi-hats and snares are infused. Rapid percussion builds a sense of
adrenaline and restlessness pushing the energy higher while an ever-present
kick drum slams over and over leaving the power of the 303 to take full

Entries is again presenting an essential classic: the Chicago house anthem
Essence of a Dream, by Risqué III. K’Alexi Shelby’s illustrious career has
included releases on legendary labels such as Trax, DJ International, and
Transmat, as well as collaborations with high profile artists such as
Marshall Jefferson and Pet Shop Boys. But his musical journey began at the
young age of 12, when he befriended Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles while
frequenting the Music Box and Warehouse. In high school, he began to write
songs and hone his poetic craft. “I recognized I had a gift to say what I was
thinking. I would study Prince and Marvin Gaye, figure out what they meant
and put my spin on it. The power of the word. I was writing love notes for
all my boys in high school and making a killing. I would know what to say and

imprint. This time round, he shares four carefree rave-influenced garage
pieces topped off with a rolling drum and bass remix from breakbeat master
Coco Bryce. Much like his previous releases - spanning Time Is Now, Sneaker
Social Club, Banoffee Pies and more - these tracks feel mildly
tongue-in-cheek. The upbeat title track is skippy, summery garage that adds a
twist of organ to add some playful flavour. "Momofuku" utilises
cartoon-villain vocal samples for a similar effect, multilayered and
crackling with ear candy but with a deep bass that builds through the rest of
the record. Into the B-side, "Opulence" focuses on this darker
edge, echoing and growling with a sub bass that begs to be blasted through a
towering sound system. "Let Loose" caps off the record in style, a
rattling snare giving way to large house stabs that glimmer over swells of
bass - a hands-in-the-air rave track. Coco Bryce's reimagining of the title

Straight from the unreleased
master tapes of Channel One's archives comes a heavy set of Niney The
Observer produced dubs. As the stry goes, Niney was one of the only producers
fearless enough to spend a lot of time in the Channel One studio after hours during
a time of political unrest on the island. During his numerous all-night
sessions he would lay down some heavyweight roots dub, many included here for
the first time. His 'Channel One Burnign With Dub' is a revision of Horace
Andy's 'Nice And Easy', while the wicked 'More Dub Pon Dub' uses one of
Channel One's many big-band riddims to create a magnificent version.
'Fearless Dub' strips Max Romeo's killer 'You Gave Me Love' riddim to the
bone before re-rubbing it with head wrecking FX. Among the most essential
cuts here is the ridiculous 'Haunting Dub', made in the early 80's with a
scarily contemporary acid sounding synthline and production comparable to
modern Ragga riddims. Great stuff |

While
the German producer Martin Matiske averages a new release under his given
name every few years, there was a long stretch of time in which sightings of
his Blackploid alias were much more rare. After dropping an EP for Frustrated
Funk in 2006, fans found further material hard to come by over the next
decade or so. However, Matiske has reinvigorated Blackploid in recent times,
with the project making a few compilation appearances and dropping a couple
of EPs across 2020. That run now culminates inCosmic Traveler, a four-track
affair which marks Matiske's debut appearance on Sheffield's Central
Processing Unit. Given the long wait, it's great just to see Blackploid back
among the fray once again. But for the project's CPU curtain-raiser to be an
EP of such high-quality techno jams? Now that really is spoiling us. Cosmic
Traveler's title nods towards the sort of stargazing aesthetics one finds in
classic Detroit techno. However, while there are undoubtedly ties to the
Motor City in this music, the record ultimately steers less towards spacious
atmospherics and more towards the taut, lean machine-funk of seminal
practitioners like Dopplereffekt. Matiske sets his stall out from the off |

Audiojack will be releasing the latest single from their forthcoming album
this April. Feels Good, produced in collaboration with esteemed
singer-songwriter Jem Cooke, will land on Crosstown Rebels and includes a
remix from melodic techno talent Patrice Bäumel. This is the second single to
be released ahead of the album with Under Your Skin, made with Kevin Knapp,
being the first. Feels Good sets off swiftly, merging prominent kick-clap
combos with shimmering pulses throughout. It’s a real peak-time number,
enhanced by Jem’s touching vocal offering, that showcases the stripped-back
and ethereal theme of the single. Patrice Bäumel’s remix soon arrives and
brings with it a poignant combination of celestial pads and rolling synth
tones, as Jem’s stunning lyrical contributions magnify the track’s moving
nature once more. Leeds-born and now based in Ibiza, Audiojack have been at
the forefront of electronic music for over a decade. In recent times the
Gruuv-label founders have released their Isolation Tapes series to widespread
industry acclaim, using music to provide a way out from the feelings of
anxiety caused by lockdown and separation |

This career spanning retrospective box set features 10 black
Vinyl LPs, complete with newly remastered versions of all five of their
Mute/Geffen albums, That Total Age, Belief, Showtime, Ebbhead, and Big Hit,
plus 5 LPs of 29 bonus tracks, featuring B-sides, and rare 12” mixes. The
original artwork for each album has been expanded into gatefold sleeves, with
embossing and spot UV finish. It also contains a large size 28-page booklet
with linear notes by Douglas McCarthy and Bon Harris and unseen photos,
flyers and artwork. The box also has accommodated their first self released
album Basic Pain Procedure, from 1983 and their last release Industrial
Complex from 2010, by leaving adequate space inside, to complete the
collection by the fans, as these titles have been in print in recent years |
