album by the irrepressible Dutchman... The '2080' part of the album title is
taken from the Roland JV2080, a legendary digital synthesizer from the
nineties that was used a lot in the making of the album. Bought second-hand
in Tokyo for a couple of hundred dollars, it lends the record a very dewy
eyed soul, whilst the 'Crystal' part of the title stands for the self-made
'DIY germanium crystal compressor' Legowelt used throughout the writing
process. The album itself features ten new tracks of pure Legowelt music
mainly recorded in De Hague in the past year, but also on the road during
tours of LA, the Californian desert, Tokyo (which spawned 'Crystal Cult
2080') and Tejada Gran Canaria (where 'The Future of Myself' was written.)
Where his last album The Paranormal Soul was an organic trip into misty
forests, this one seems more concerned with medieval spirits; it's deeper,
darker and the whole thing is tied together by a more coherent sense of
ancient alchemy. Given the use of a DIY germanium crystal compressor during
production, it's no wonder everything feels warm, fuzzy and mystic in a way
that draws your attention in like that fabled philosopher's stone... glare
too long and you might just turn to stone. Right from the opening track the
mood is so encapsulating you are drawn right into Danny Wolfers' mysterious
electronic world. From there various different tempos are explored and plenty
of famed synthesiser work comes to the fore, wrapping grooves in trippy
themes, impish spirits and plenty of organic lushness |

A
producer with multiple aliases and projects, the sound wizard behind world
recognized mastering studio Jammin Masters and brother of Khan, owner of the
legendary New York record store and record label Temple Records. Cem Oral,
the aforementioned, raised in Germany by a Turkish father and a Finnish
mother, heavily influenced by Jamaican dub and electronic music pioneers,
began his career at a tender age playing with four-track recorders and
synthesizers, juggling between collaborations with many pop music stars, or
as sound-designer of film soundtracks, and in underground solo or group
projects, writing some of the most beautiful pages of German and European
alternative music in general. At the same time since 1993, he has mastered
over forty thousand tracks for countless prominent artists and labels.
"Never Been On E" as Oral Experience is definitely an odd release
if you know La Bella Di Notte catalog, but probably one of the most
representative of his own vision. The reissue comes courtesy of Cem Oral and
fully restored by none other than himself |

Following
on from 2018’s acclaimed ‘Actualisation’, ‘The Deep End’ builds upon the acid
house influences of the former but ventures into many new paths. Hip hop,
techno, drum ‘n’ bass and other ‘genres’ sneak into the creative palette
whilst also staying true to the band mantra of throwing the rule book out of
the window, as far as ‘genres’ or ‘boundaries’ are concerned. The album was
penned over the Spring of 2019 by Mark Emmerson (vocals/guitar/synths).
Again, Roland 303/808 synths, bass and vocals were key tools for writing,
whilst the Roland SH01a found its way onto the team sheet, as well as a
sampler for the first time. Recording commenced in March 2019, the ethos
being rehearsing and recording a track as soon as it was written with mixing
taking place on each track shortly after. By July 2019 85% of the album was
completed, the final track laid down in January 2020. they’ve quietly found
themselves elevated into the psych scenes premier league.’ Drowned In Sound

is a real studio wizard. The 7th Eliptic release, Peach In Chaos LP, is his
much anticipated debut LP. It finds him explore rhythms that are imbued with
all manner of late night motifs. Deft pads, wonky samples, chunky techno
kicks and filtered loops all bring off beat charm and curious character to
each and every track. On A side, the bleep-heavy 'Peace In Chaos' stands out
from the very first kick as a dance floor track, it spans across the full
spectrum with the psychedelic bass and crunchy '90s techno groove. On the
flip, Julian explores a deeper territory, with some twitchy samples and
nagging groove, on the minimalistic - but no less fluid or mind-altering -
'Joaca'. 'Just Be' has a more rugged groove with slippery shakers and kinked
percussions, tough rolling minimal aimed squarely at the main room at peak
time, the dense bass pulsations of the track compliment the mood. 'Nightzzz'
takes things into moodier territory with a broad sweep of keys spelling out
an eerie mood around a break beat. A complete journey on B side. Get ready
for more swing-fuelled hypnotic groove business on C side, featuring the late
night bass driven bump of 'Say Cheese At The Radio', that it gets more heady,
with swirling pads circling round the vocal and nimble hits. With 'Day-Z',

alongside Swedish band Frangie to craft an ascendent techno cut that explores
existential questions about the future, all the while being propelled by a
strong rhythmic underbelly. Beyer’s first remix in two years is inspired. The
boss sharpens his focus on the vocal, while teasing out the melody, ripening
the track for a mid-morning post-peak-time moment when the sun starts to

Clint Eastwood followed his older
brother Trinity onto the sound systems of western Kingston, becoming another
microphone fiend to impact during the mid/1970s. After recording singles for
Ossie Hibbert, Manzie Swaby and Joe Gibbs, Eastwood teamed up with Bunny Lee
for a series of sublime LPs, African Youth a super 1978 set voiced at King
Tubby's and mixed by Prince Jammy over some of Lee's tough Aggrovators
rhythms. Highlights include tough deejay takes of Johnny Clarke's 'African
Roots' and Cornel Campbell's tars,' as well as a cut of Black Uhuru's 'Eden
Out There,' from Jammy's archive. This is a crucial roots classic with all

Sotofett and LNS have teamed up with Tresor Records for Sputters. The
double-vinyl album with 15 cuts spans a hybrid of warped electro and
psychedelic hypnosis, all the while remaining fixed in an unmistakable dance
release. Recorded between 2017 – 2020, and bookmarked throughout by intros
and interludes dug out from archival material, it's a deconstructed yet
classic compound of techno-sonics. LNS from Calgary, Canada, is rooted in
braindance, electro and acid. Releasing 12inches on both her self-titled
imprint LNS and Sotofett’s Wania - LNS, whilst in the studio, has often
pointed out “the lacking blend of dub and electro in dance music”. DJ
Sotofett, hailing from Moss, Norway, is among a myriad of things commonly
known for the extended work of his Sex Tags Mania and Wania labels, without
forgetting his afro, dub and jazz releases on Honest Jon's London. Together
both artists give space to a guest appearance by E-GZR, a fellow Wania
artist, to open the Sputters journey. The sinus bending drum stutter of K.O.
by E-GZR collisions flanging basses and chronic-inducing synth pads to
blueprint the technoid atmosphere to come. LNS & DJ Sotofett take control
with El Dubbing, evoking an effect-heavy demeanour, typical of the Sex Tags
Mania soundworld that DJ Sotofett is responsible for, this time rubbing up
against solid electrified rhythms. The hypnotic moods carry over to
Dúnn Dubbing's deep delays, freely running over a surprisingly minimal
skeleton retaining a solid direction. Crafting a warmly emotive end of Side-A
with sparse rhythms to perfection. A meaner turn introduces Side-B. Hints of
electro are scattered everywhere, fat basslines, ricocheting drums and synths
that mourn and drift in and out of harmony. Vitri-Oil exposes a tumbling
sound design, fog-lit chords of material fragility and nosedives - with an
alive mix that wallows and grows in equal measures. The side closes with
Shim, a classic drift between house and techno releasing sensual euphoria
with the albums first big surprise – grand strings. “LNS wanted to sell her
TR-606, while my reply was for us to make a track with the 606 sounding so
fresh that she'd never even think about selling it again” Sotofett states.
Side-C proves the artists to be some of the most singular producers around
with album centrepiece The 606. Clocking in over 10 minutes, it kicks off as
a driving techno banger, chugging bass and big chords. Midway through
everything falls away, and out of the void enter scattered drums and improv
piano lines emerge, while twisted dubs lead us back in an enduringly warm
groove. Side-D sets the clock back to the original electroid foundation of
the album, casting fires with alien vibrations. Synchronic Bass Blort is a
hard-hitting electro track, steaming sonics and thrills, its melodic hook
diving in subterranean motions. On Sputtering the duo raspily beams into
outer space, with fizzy motives that disfigure and dazzle while the harmonies
of the closing track is for yourself to experience. DJ Sotofett and LNS deliver
an album inhabiting a world full of sci-fi sonics and fierce groove. Their
sound is free and live, simultaneously wondrous and sharp |

'Underestimated EP' in March, we continue the Perpetual Masters series on
M-Plant with a vintage Floorplan double-header. 'On The Case / The Deal' was
originally released on M-Plant's subsidiary label, Duet back in 2001. At the
time Floorplan was still in its infancy with just a handful of releases on
Drama in the '90s, the seminal 'Paradise' album had yet to be conceived and
Robert's daughter Lyric Hood hadn't joined the party. 20 years later and the
tracks have now been re-mastered and are ready to set dance floors alight

‘Bait’. The Stockholm-based duo of Martin Thomasson and Johan Skugge bring a
vast history of production behind them, operating since the early aughts and
known for their work in dub and minimal techno. ‚Bait’ ventures into new
territory for the project, delivering infectious strains of body music, new
beat, industrial and beyond coupled with soul-stirring vocals which quickly
dig beneath the skin. The release is about everyday manipulation, soft power
and persuasion. We exist in a world in which corporate management techniques
are deployed in our everyday lives, nudging each other for short-term gain,
slowly hallowing out any lasting trust while ultimately all being crushed by
a hyper-capitalist system. From the opening synths of the title track to the
ominous ending notes of ‘Night Vision’, we also uncover funky grooves and
diabolical floor shakers which remind us of something from the past but exist
perfectly in this corrupted new world. As is customary, the striking cover
art was photographed by Tomaso Lisca, and it’s a fitting piece for the
record, depicting a tantalizing well-oiled machine, all while something
menacing lurks under the hood |

It's party time! The second full album from the Compact Disk
Dummies, 'Neon Fever Dream', blows out one candle today. Indeed, it was
exactly one year ago, in the midst of full corona time that the follow-up to
'Silver Souls' came out and took #4 on the charts with hits like 'I Remember'
and 'Matter Of Time'. To celebrate, Orson Wouters AKA Transistorcake was
brought in, who together with Aili dominated Radio 1's VOX list for several
weeks. To honour the occasion, he whipped up a spaced-out remix of the title
track 'Neon Fever Dream', which is being released on a limited white label
edition together with an instrumental version of the original track on the
flip side. This will exclusively be available on 7". Each vinyl record
will be hand-stamped, making each copy unique. And unique is good, says Plato
on a drunken Thursday! Aili x Transistorcake will also support the larger
part of the 'Neon Fever' tour, which is adding two new shows to the sold-out
tour: Trix in Antwerp and the Cactus Club in Bruges |

With
canceled shows, closed venues and lost incomes, the pandemic was bad news for
many music artists. But it wasn't only bad news in 2020, as many artists used
their struggle to do what they do best during difficult times: create great
music. This is why N.E.W.S. Records, a record company based in Ghent releases
'Bad News. Good News.'. A limited edition vinyl record with great songs that
couldn't be played live because of the pandemic. The record itself is made
from the ashes of newspapers and magazines containing the bad news that hit
the music industry in 2020 (and prevented artists from performing live). As
proof that great music always survives bad news, no matter how desperate
things can get. To create the records, N.E.W.S. Records worked with And
Vinyly, a UK-based company specialized in pressing vinyl records with ashes.
Many artists collaborated on the project and shared their insight on how the
bad news happening in the music world influenced their music, like Johannes
Genard, lead singer of School is Cool: "The one good thing about bad
times is that they open new perspectives on things you've grown accustomed
to, and that is exactly our core business as artists: comforting during
challenging times; challenging during comfortable times and finding new ways
to look at old things." The compilation contains some exclusives like
the Brihang & Compact Disk Dummies 'Steentje / I Remember' mash up,

In
2013 moest je al heel erg diep in de scene zitten om de naam Brihang te
kennen. De piepjonge Boudy Verleye was toen nog voornamelijk een student
beeldhouwkunst in Gent, zonder enige ambitie om de Belgische
muziekgeschiedenis in te gaan. Nochtans is 'Periode Jalisco', uit in dat
jaar, achteraf beschouwd een absolute mijlpaal. Wie toen de moeite nam om de
EP te beluisteren, hoorde een volledig nieuw geluid binnen Belgische hiphop
waaien. Een sound die poëtisch, warm en organisch klonk, wars van platgetreden
paden en traditionele structuren. Voor Brihang stond schrijven gelijk aan
boetseren: een opwindend spel van wegnemen en toevoegen, een spel ook waarin
ten allen tijde moest geëxperimenteerd worden. Bij het maken van de EP voelde
Brihang de drang om elk facet van het creatief proces op zich te nemen, van
de tekst tot de muziek en zelfs het grafische gedeelte. In een aantal nummers
werd hij bijgestaan door de streekgenoten van NTREK en zijn artistieke
zielsverwant Janes Zeghers, maar het is onmiskenbaar de jongeman uit Knokke
die zijn stempel drukte. 'Periode Jalisco' liet horen dat Brihang een artiest
was die het waard was om van nabij te blijven volgen. Amper een jaar later
volgde de overwinning in De Nieuwe Lichting en drukte muziekminnend België de
artiest aan de borst om hem niet meer los te laten. Voor Record Store Day
2021 verschijnt 'Periode Jalisco' voor het eerst in gelimiteerde editie op

Robertson aka I Benjahman, Fraction Of Jah Action, originally a 7 track

of some of the highest reggae royalty and courtiers. Alpha Boys School alumni
trombonist and The Specials affiliated Rico Rodriguez, drummer extraordinaire
Horsemouth Wallace, bassist of smooth liquidity Larry Silvera, veteran
engineer Sid Bucknor, the finest fingers in UK reggae production Dennis
Bovell as well as West London band Zabandis, to name a few. Reissued for the
very first time, this has the bulk of I Benjahman’s early 80’s output, originals

Do
you know what time it is It's debut o'clock. Emitting his first material for
Pampa, it's &ME - craftsman of all things deep and sturdy, at the same
time connoisseur of emotive touch and virtuoso of sure instincts, one of the
scene's central characters for a good amount of years now and one of the main
figures of Berlin's Keinemusik-crew. The man has been hitting the bulls eye
of public perception several times in the past, meeting everything it takes
to get a crowd going with an intent on the detail when it comes to his
arrangements and sound. These new two cuts seem nothing less than the essence
of his abilities. There is "In Your Eyes", the name lending A side
to this EP, showcasing a rather pensive mood. It's just a few bars for the
compound of kickdrum, tuned hi-hat tambourine and shimmering background noise
until the first chords of an improvised piano-piece are tenderly laid upon
the beat. Add a synth-motive coming back and forth and you'll have the main
ingredients to this - in every sense of the word - floor-moving tune |

On
July 5th, London based Australian-American duo The Golden Filter will release
their latest full-length album ‘Autonomy’ via their own 4GN3S imprint.
‘Autonomy’ is a fiercely independent album and serves as a testimony to the
united couple’s instinctive DIY attitude; for 10 years now, everything The
Golden Filter has done from, producing, mixing, releasing, to shooting videos
and press shots is a sovereign endeavour. Here, the duo finds themselves at a
point of fearless positivity and an unbreakable creative synchronicity. This
is undoubtedly one of their most focused and ambitious releases so far. Born
out of their own self-contained studio in Peckham, free from external
influence, Penelope and Stephen set about on a mission of self-searching and
solipsism drawing influence from their love and unity that sternly defies the
damage caused by the ever-growing daily trauma of capitalism and politics.
Staunchly feminist and optimistically reflecting on the growing human
disconnect from reality, ‘Autonomy’ pulls subtly from the gloomier sides of
British life and culture, The Golden Filter’s home now for the last four
years. ‘Autonomy’ mines dark and experimental electronic tones;
simultaneously conjuring dystopian synthscapes, EBM, post-punk, motoric electro
and minimal wave. ‘Coercion’ is a mournful new wave cut that places
Penelope’s recent brand of “inky dream pop” underpinned by Stephen’s
pulsating synths as the perfect soundtrack to the rapture. Tracks like
‘Autonomy’ and ‘Infinity’ find The Golden Filter in more familiar territory,
thrusting post-punk electronics that straddle the gap between Panorama Bar
staples and wayward, thought provoking art-pop. ‘Electric Light’ is an
updated homage to old-school sounds of Siouxsie and New Order that take on
the duo’s message of finding light in the dark and remaining open minded to
each other as humans. Album closer ‘All The Queens’ is the most front-facing
example of the duo’s political inspirations; imagining a new world, reborn
under the rule of divine femininity |

Every
now and then a release comes along for us which carries just that little
extra bit of weight and significance and the Mind In A Daze EP from Solid
Gold Playaz is one of those. The US duo have released some of my favourite
house tracks dating back to the late nineties so it is a real pleasure to
have them produce four amazing new tracks for us here on Freerange. Kenny
Gino and Mike T have had many highly rated releases on revered labels such as
DNH, Moods n Grooves, Silver Network and their own Solid Gold Records.
Resolutely underground, and it’s fair to say criminally underrated, Solid
Gold Playaz have stayed true to what they do by releasing the heaviest club
music which connects on a far deeper level than your average new house
release. I really hope you can give Mind In A Daze some time to grab you in
the same way it has grabbed me. Kicking off the EP the title track sets the
mood with an SGP rolling groove, hypnotic synths and tripped-out vocal
delivery from Mike himself. For me, they consistently hit this beautiful
sweet spot between jacking Chicago house, Detroit techno and the more
European IDM sounds of ART, Irdial and B12 |

from Dublin, this producer and DJ has gain within a few years a solid
reputation of merciless techno purveyor in Europe with uncompromising
releases on structures such like On The Hoof, Sheworks, Black Sun Records,
Trensmat, Mord, Inner Surface Music, Komisch, Bastardo Electrico, and many
more. Half of the Tinfoil duo along with DeFekt offers to the French Rave
label a great slab of bastard-heavy material in his typical signature: hard
and fast "Loose (Burn Down)" supported by metallic sorities and
ruff modulations over a pounding bass line in a pure, raw style. On the

Carrying
on a new white label series of killer garage cuts, Bristol's Time Is Now have
hand-picked British duo Cortese for their next installment. Expect playful,
niche-inspired garage sounds with a unique touch of modernism. The EP opens
with "Abbey Park"; a glistening neo speed-garage track with
delicate synth chords dancing over the cavernous slow attack bassline. It
purrs into the squelchy bassline style "Where You At", that
compliments upbeat piano stabs with autotuned vocals. "Floaty" uses
an iconic Aaliyah vocal chops, dancing around a chunky El-B inspired snare.
This one has a melancholic breakdown which is perfect for a dancefloor
breather, before the growling bassline is reintroduced to devastating effect.
A collaboration with Brighton-based DJ Movement, "Things That Make You
Go 'Hmm'" is pure bassline garage energy let loose in a furore of bass
patches in a moodier track that still doesn't take itself too seriously.
Closing out, "Figure 1" brings a searing synth melody which
complements another rolling bassline. The understated drums make excellent
use of a syncopated kick pattern whilst diva vocals chime along in the
background |
