Five years in the making, label boss Emmanuel aimed to deliver
what for him was the very best selection of artists and people he could ever
imagine in one single roof. We have repacked and redesigned our very first
compilation after the great first run. 20 artists, 5 records, 1 box. The Box
is a meticulous work of one entire year, every artist of the 20 selected
delivered something that connects deeply with the label and the reason why
they are part of it. The study goes beyond when artists get different colors
of palettes and a different surface to paint, their known soundscapes come
with something freer than the usual approach that they did in their singles.
This is a pinnacle for a label that always placed music in front of
everything but kept the design and the aesthetics on a top-level each

Squid
announce their debut album, ‘Bright Green Field’, already one of 2021’s most
highly anticipated releases. Produced by Dan Carey, ‘Bright Green Field’ is
an album of towering scope and ambition, it is deeply considered, paced and
intricately constructed. With all band members playing such a vital and equal
role, this album is very much the product of five heads operating as one.
Some bands might be tempted to include previous singles on their debut - and
the band already released two more in 2020 via ‘Sludge’ and ‘Broadcaster’ -
but instead ‘Bright Green Field’ is completely new. This sense of
limitlessness and perpetual forward motion is one of the key ingredients that
makes Squid so loved by fans and critics alike, from 6 Music, who have
A-Listed previous singles ‘Houseplants’, ‘The Cleaner’ and ‘Match Bet’, to
publications such as The Guardian, NME, The Face, The Quietus and countless
others. The band was also on the longlist for the BBC Music Sound Of 2020
poll. ‘Bright Green Field’ features field recordings of ringing church bells,
tooting bees, microphones swinging from the ceiling orbiting a room of guitar
amps and a distorted choir of 30 voices, as well as a horn and string
ensemble featuring the likes of Emma-Jean Thackray and Lewis Evans from Black
Country, New Road. Squid’s music - be it agitated and discordant or
groove-locked and flowing - has often been a reflection of the tumultuous
world we live in and this continues that to some extent. “This album has
created an imaginary cityscape,” says Ollie Judge, who writes the majority of
the lyrics and plays drums. “The tracks illustrate the places, events and
architecture that exist within it. Previous projects were playful and
concerned with characters, whereas this project is darker and more concerned
with place - the emotional depth of the music has deepened.” For all the
innovative recording techniques, evolutionary leaps, lyrical themes, ideas
and narratives that underpin the album, it’s also a joyous and emphatic
record. One that marries the uncertainties of the world with a curious sense
of exploration as it endlessly twists and turns down unpredictable avenues |

founded by American singer/instrumentalist Tod A. in New York City in 1995,
after the breakup of his previous group Cop Shoot Cop. A sel-described 'world

Brilliant
second album from the wholly original cult Sheffield post punk band. Released
in 1983 on Red Flame "One Afternoon In A Hot Air Balloon" is an
adventure on its own. Artery somehow replaced the somber post-punk of the
debut with a stream of melancholic pop paeans influenced by british folk and
certain ballroom dances, with a spectral keyboard sound worth killing for.
The secret weapon, when compared to the rest of their discography, is largely
explained by the presence of keyboard player and (by now) main composer
Christopher Hendrick. The band was in fact reduced to a trio with former
members Mark Gouldthorpe (guitar) and Garry Wilson (drums) now supported by
the singular effort of Hendrick (also on bass and xylophone). At the same time
Garry Wilson was playing in an early incarnation of Pulp. Despite the early
Joy Division influence, which the band firmly dismissed, Artery is moving
forward into the so-called new romantic era. A vaudeville scenario light
years ahead from the streets and the aggro-culture, a way to some pleasant
and revealing experience |

Twenty’s
plenty (apparently), it’s also the number we use to welcome our first artist
from the US of A into the fold, Detroit USA to be exact. Francois Dillinger
has been doing his thing on labels This Ain’t Bristol, Natural Sciences and
Anabatic Records plus others, fusing deep melodic Techno with 909 laden
broken beat Electro. With this his inaugural release for us, he brings a
fusion of these trademark sounds as the lead track Infinite eases you in with
sparse punchy drums and brooding bass line before spooky Arabic style horns
beckon us in further. It’s a hybrid between Electro and Techno with a drop
ominous enough to make even Freddie Krugger think twice about staying in the
club! It’s a track that’ll be heard on the floors of Berlin, Ibiza or even a
few Miami Booty Bass pool parties (see enclosed DJ Feedbacks)! Up next is man
of the moment Dragosh (Desolat / Moonharbour / Modvlar Label Boss) who keeps
the original vibe while flipping the core elements into a glitchy House

Jeff
Mills and the Zanza 21 project is a new forthcoming creation that's been
self-constructing for quite some time. Not out in the open and easy to see,
but it's been evolving more in recent months through the imprint
"Millsart" album releases and as an accumulation of ideas that are
influences of Mills' affection for Jazz Music as well as his constant
appetite to creatively explore. The idea behind Zanza 21 is based on an old
theory that "Music is most useful at the point when it touches the soul
of the listener, until then, its just sound". So, the main layer in the
foundation starts there. To begin, this is music in which one can live with.
It's "everyday" music. The more you listen, the more you connect to
it. It's music for anytime, anywhere and for any reason. A large part of this
connection is based on comfort and how easy it is to understand so for this,
the music had to have a certain level of clarity and organization. Second,
playing instruments can have "human connection" qualities that are
often misunderstood and overlooked, so the basis of Zanza 21 was to create
music in a soloist mindset to demonstrate intent, not as a matter of
coincidence |

from L-R, a collaborative project between Keith Tenniswood (Radioactive Man),
Simon Lynch (London Modular Alliance) and Johnny Oakley (Monoak /
Freerotation). Three friends and artists whose music I've enjoyed and admired
for many years. The group have been working together regularly in the
beautifully equipped Curvepusher Studio (with the addition of Simon's modular
elements) over the last 18 months and over these sessions worked up a sound
that brings in a striking combination of elements from each producer's own

years after their last EP on Break New Soil, we are psyched to welcome back
two very good friends of ours and true heavyweights of the international
Techno-community: Extrawelt return to Break New Soil with three magic tracks
that once again showcase their versatility and unique artistic approach to
making music. "Jetzt Neu: Alles Wie Früher“ is a fresh take on the
energy that made us all fall in love with Extrawelt in the first place. Arne
and Wayan were not even sure about releasing this belter as they don't want
to repeat themselves - but luckily for all of us we could convince them.
„Knackfrisch“ comes along fresh as a cucumber: A rhythmic powerhouse full of
clever edits and tricks. It seems to constantly accelerate just to make sure
it'll win the race against itself. Equipped with a massive kick, funky hihats
and smashing percussions it aimes to set dancefloors on fire. Last but not
least, „Treuepunkt“ is definitely one for the soul. Deep and driving with
syncopated rhythms and lovely synthwork that is topped with a bleepy melody
that could come from Detroit rather than from Hamburg. We hope you enjoy this
triumphant return to our beloved label as much a we do! |

Madrid
based artist _asstnt returns to his newly formed Opera 2000 label with four
pounding techno cuts entitled "Heartless" EP. _asstnt's sound comes
from the heart of a passionate artist conveying romanticism, truth and
dedication within his music and philosophy. The DJ and producer from Madrid
breaks into the underground scene with an industrial, dirty and melancholic
sound that stems from his love for hardstyle or hardcore that was instilled
in him from an early age. In 2017 his first track was released on an Involve
Records compilation together with the artist Roll Dann before starting the
Opera 200 label together in 2020 whose inaugural release saw the light of day
in February 2020 and picked up support from the likes of Charlotte de Witte,
Matrixxman, Truncate, Fernanda Martins and many more. "Heartless"
begins proceedings with intense, piercing modulations, industrial kicks and
robust sonics in this haunting opening cut before "Teenage Romance"
offers up entrancing leads underneath blistering soundscapes and acid-soaked,
rave inspired synth flutters |

Audio
visual sculptor Kero operates the multidisciplinary arts collective Detroit
Underground record label and continues to produce bit crushed experimental
electronic music with over two decades under his belt. Demo Vectors showcases
Kero's sonic range—bouncing back and forth between IDM fractures, broken
electro shapes and an all around low-end forcefield. Splicing machined
modular tunes with syncopated rhythms and Detroit-inspired slivers, Kero's
fingerprints can be found on imprints like Blueprint, Wild oats, Ghostly
International, Shitkatapult, Semantica, Touchin' Bass, BPitch Control, and
many others. Using different studio setups from 1998 to 2021, Demo Vectors
culminated from many different locations including Detroit, Windsor,
Barcelona, Berlin and Los Angeles and reveals Kero's curriculum vitae
packaged in a 60 minute robust collection. The downtempo groove of
"ABSTR_B&B" offers a classic bricolage of collapsed mechanical
percussion straight from the foundry as the definitive sound design and
glitchy bits of "BLISS" take shape. Fluid robotics and bass jabs
progress on "GROUNDZEROBACK" pushing each pixel to their breaking
point. You'll also find stark industrial elements on tracks like
"PREFREAK.EPS" and spastic acid on "COMOFFICE-1"
displaying the wide angle lens Kero employs to capture improvised dark
drill'n bass techniques with a Squarepusher sheen. From the slow burning
"PILL'LATHE2" humming its way across laid back digitized acrobatics
to the aptly titled "COLOR_CUB" that clicks, cuts and collects
subtle low frequency modulations, Demo Vectors is a tightly compacted and
forward thinking IDM album. Sandblasted electronics mixed with shattered
glass and corrosive blips'n bleeps, Demo Vectors acts as Kero's raison d'etre

Whippet join the Toy Tonics family! The London/Berlin-based duo make a sound
that is based on futuristic breakbeats combined with deep, jazz chord
progressions and a kind of funk that sounds more like it was made in 2100
then in a year behind us. Definitely not a retro record the Vesta EP is
further proof that the connection between London and Berlin that has been
build by several Toy Tonics artists (Cody Currie the latest in the gang) is
becoming a strong one. The combination of the Berlin dancefloor sound and the
UK jazz fusion soul is changing the scene and creating new moods. Neo soul

her debut EP, 'Dansu' Belgian-Japanese artist Aili has joined forces with
another of Belgium's most exciting new acts Transistorcake, the pair working
through lockdown to produce a wonderfully fresh sounding 5 track release on
Eskimo Recordings. Effortlessly bringing together elements of Kosmiche Musik,
Acid House, Electronica, Disco & Leftfield Pop, the 'Dansu' EP is as easy
on the ears as it is hard to categorise. "I met Orson at a party a
couple of years ago," recalls Aili. "I had been making music by
myself for a while and wanted to take it more seriously. He was known as this
'music guy', so I approached him and we hit it off right away. He has so much
studio knowledge I can take my tracks to him and he gets where I want to go
with it." "We had been batting these tracks back and forth between
ourselves whilst locked in our flats earlier this year trying to get the
music right. At one point I started singing over the top of 'Dansu' in
Japanese, I'm not really sure why but it just came out like that and
everything started to click," Aili explains. "I left Tokyo for
Belgium when I was 7 years old and in many ways my Japanese stayed at that
level |

Recondite, a
long-time friend of the label, returns for an introspective outing. The
German producer has a storied history with Afterlife, appearing on the early
Realms Of Consciousness compilations and releasing the Rainmaker EP in 2018,
as well as numerous performances at Afterlife events all over the world. With
the Bird EP he presents two tracks with contrasting themes that complement
each other, demonstrating his technical ability and emotional intelligence.
Title track ‘Bird’ explores the notion of freedom through sonic
transcendence, offering hope and optimism with its gentle melodies and subtle
euphoria. ‘Secluded’ takes the opposite approach, exploring the inner
conflict sparked by isolation and living in confinement. Taut beats and
brooding melancholy underpin this cut, with a solemn repetitive riff adding

on Chicago's southside 1970, Robert has an expansive Musical career that
started at the age of 14 with Djing and remixing from the age of 18. In his

In
1976, U Roy was the new attraction in Jamaican music. With his first hit Wake
the Town six years earlier, he had imposed a new style on the Kingston
soundsystems, which consisted of taking up local hits by speaking in “voice
over” around the choruses. That year he took on the Wailers' Soul Rebel,
which he transformed into the Natty Rebel, which would become his absolute
hit until today. Fifty years later, U Roy, who is approaching 80, delivers an
entire album around the Wailers discography. A project initiated by the
American producer Gary Himelfarb alias Doctor Dread, who arrived in Jamaica
in 1977 and who signed the biggest names of the time on his label RAS
Records, from Black Uhuru to Jimmy Cliff via Bunny Wailer, Inner Circle or
Gregory Isaacs.In the fold of Sanctuary Records, which also owns reggae
reissue giant Trojan Records, Doctor Dread has obtained permission to use the
Wailers tracks recorded by Lee Perry in the early 1970s. He then locked
himself in a Kingston studio with U Roy, who recorded 14 songs in four hours
(!), Freestyle as in the great times. Bunny Wailer, the last survivor of the
original trio, was also present to witness this historic session, which pits
two icons of Jamaican reggae from the 70's against each other |

This
June Session Victim return to Jimpster's ' Delusions Of Grandeur' imprint
with a third studio album. 'Listen To Your Heart' is the result of a year of
cross-continental scripting, started in their Hamburg studio and wrapped up
stateside in San Francisco's Room G Studios where the duo had worked on their
2014 LP 'See you When You Get There'. Sampling still remains an ever present
backbone throughout the album. Session Victim have dug deep for sounds,
resulting in a richly detailed and organic sound collage that goes
hand-in-hand with their live instrumentation, this time enhanced through
several guest musician appearances, most notably Carsten "Erobique"
Meyer (ex-International Pony). Smooth guitar samples are built up on 'Over
and Over' while on 'Moons & Flowers' the live instrumentals that Session
Victim do so well come to the fore. The treasure trove of San Francisco's
record shops proved to be a hard bait to resist and the pair spent a large
part of their Californian time hunting for records to sample. Three new
tracks emerged from these digging sessions, with the sweeping disco string
arrangements on 'Shadows' standing out as a prime ode to days spent combing
through bargain bins. Listen To Your Heart is equally a product of the road.
While heavy touring is often cited as a hindrance to the creativity of
artists, Session Victim see their live shows as a catalyst to their
creativity. Two US tours in 2016 gave the Hamburg duo the opportunity to take
track sketches and fragments on the road to incorporate into their live shows
and then digest them back in the studio. The playful funk soaked groove of
'Matching Half' captures the sense of movement present throughout Listen To
Your Heart and the LP mix of 'Up To Rise', which caused heavy ripples when it
dropped as part of 2016's Matching Half EP is an extension of the upbeat and
euphoric groove |

In
the late 90’s, east-side LA was in the throws of a post-indie explosion; a
network of stoned bands ranging from neo-psychedelia to pseudo-country
overran Spaceland (our generation’s Troubadour) and the local Silverlake
Lounge. I was playing freakbeat records twice a week in dive bars, half of
Spacemen 3 was crashing at my house (my drop-out roomate was Sonic Boom’s
tour drummer) and it was during this blur that I met Raymond Richards, a
clean-cut all-American pedal steel guitarist playing in Mojave 3 (the
country-tinged side project of 4AD shoegaze royalty, Slowdive). I was
instantly swept off my feet, head over heals in love with Raymond's
weeping tone—the most chill-inducing, emotionally responsive dialog I’d had
with music since discovering Satie as a child—it was then and it is now,
truly haunting. After a year of personnel trials, my roomate and I stole
Raymond for our own band, and not only did he smother our songs with his
enchanting steel, he was virtuosic with a variety of atypical instruments
such as baritone guitar and theremin, he utilized them all. The band was
short-lived—I joined Ariel Pink, Raymond fled to Portland and me
subsequently to New York City—but in founding the ESP Institute years later,
there was always a recurring mental note; we must make Raymond’s pedal steel

The
Record Store Day 2021 vinyl edition of Super Nova Samba Funk – the comeback
album from Banda Black Rio, featuring Brazilian heavyweights Seu Jorge,
Marcio Local, Elza Soares, Cesar Camargo Mariano & more. Originally
released in 2011, this new special edition for RSD features two tracks from
the project that were never released on vinyl, ‘Irerê (feat. Gilberto Gil)’
and ‘Aos Pés Do Redentor (feat. Caetano Veloso)’. William Magalhães formed
Banda Black Rio as a modern-day incarnation of his father Oberdan’s original
‘70s Brazilian samba soul and funk outfit. Re-igniting the Black Rio flame,
Magalhaes’ brought together Brazilian icons Seu Jorge, Marcio Local and Elza
Soares feature alongside bossa pioneers Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, as
well as Flame Killer and GOD PT3 from the famed NYC Mobb Deep crew for the
project. Formed in Rio De Janeiro, 1976, Banda Black Rio pioneered the
soul-funk movement in Brazil led by renowned saxophonist Oberdan Magalhaes.
As global stars of the politically charged Black Rio movement, emerging
almost a decade earlier from the Soul Brasileiro genre, BBR brought together
Rio’s black funk scene to rally against repression, a conservative record
industry and white middle class press to mobilise disenchanted black
Brazilian youth against the military dictatorship that mirrored the struggles
in North America. Banda Black Rio released a string of unforgettable
recordings in the late-1970s from 1977 debut album, Maria Fumaça, on Warner
Music to 1978’s Gafieira Universal on RCA Recordings that is considered one
of the all-time great Brazilian jazz-funk records |

His sixth EP on
the Figure label catalogue, Brain Mechanix, finds the Stockholm producer
UBX127 once again in top form. Enhancing the proven formula, UBX127 combines
outer-space atmospherics with heavy slabs of techno that will shake up any
soundsystem. Revolving around a dusky vocal, opener Freek sets a hazy mood
with chugging rhythms and some massive bass. Bastun then builds its eerie
character on steady drums and squelching tones, before a hypnotic synth
finally takes over. A perfect example of finely trimmed minimalism, soothing
B1 Likstroem carries itself by the presence of its rising and falling dub
chords alone. Marking the culmination of the vinyl release, Teleport Into
Space combines all of UBX127’ core qualities into a lengthy, albeit deeply rewarding
ride throughout the stratosphere |

Peggy Gou is
proud to announce the launch of her own independent record label, Gudu
Records. The label’s first release will be the Moment EP - a two-track 12”
featuring the tracks ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Han Pan’. 'Moment’ sees Gou continue
to explore the charismatic facets of her musical and personal identity,
drawing on her Korean heritage and language and her love for house &
disco’s Eighties heritage, with particular nods to the output of labels such
as Prelude and West End Records in the decade’s nascent years. Gou’s own
singing voice, known to so many from last year’s ‘Once’ EP, returns here to
confidently guide the rhythm on ‘Starry Night’. Mixing both Korean and
English vocals over a tumbling cascade of percussion and piano house keys,
the track builds to incorporate layers of instrumental samples and subtle
acid lines. Romantic, anthemic and timeless in its feel, it reaffirms Gou’s
skill as a songwriter with appeal that resonates beyond crowded dancefloors,
not to mention language barriers |

Unleashing an unexpected, accelerated side of his immaculate studio
experiments, FWD NRG is also remixed with blistering results by AceMo.
Immediately engulfing dancers in breakneck kicks, trancing synths and driven
by a vampish melody, FWD NRG’s intent is rich in vintage rave texture, dusty
and almost warped. This expertly controlled chaos builds to an epic wormhole
of a breakdown, dissolving time and space until dancers find their minds
transported to a field near Frankfurt, circa 1994. FWD NRG could well be the
maxim of New York’s AceMo, the prolific New York producer who has earned a
deserved reputation as one of electronic music’s most inventive and versatile
figures. His monumental ‘N Is For Nrg’ remix locates a menacing undertone in
Fort Romeau’s original production, spinning off and hitting even tougher with
vast rave stabs and gloriously frenetic arrangements |

Second
State's latest release is a special one: the debut LP from talented German
producer Wigbert. Over the past decade, Wigbert has been forging a strong
reputation as an inventive, versatile producer, skills that have seen him
submit remixes for the likes of Gregor Tresher and Pan-Pot themselves, while
achieving plenty of support from Dubfire, who has released a handful of
Wigbert's EPs on his own SCI + TEC label. Stepping up for his first
full-length, Wigbert demonstrates why he's a firm favorite among so many. The
"Distorted Matter" LP showcases his affinity for both atmospheric
mood pieces and pummeling club cuts, the sign of a producer with more than
one trick up his sleeve. "Uncertainty" opens the album in an
ominous tone. As its name suggests, it creates a feeling of unease, even
horror, as macabre drones blare underneath bleepy arpeggios. Later on the LP,
on "Error 404", this mood is revisited, with bleeps and static
signifying that something has gone awry. The second track on the record,
“Reflection” is its hardest hitting. Ice-cold stabs, a pumping kick and
driving rhythms send the track into overdrive before creepy arps and drums
come back in. It’s complex, layered and unrelenting. "Night Vision"
is threaded with warped off-kilter rhythms, while "Xcelerator" is
charged with nervous energy, echo FX and prickling percussion. Other tracks
on the LP share this latter mood, such as "Digital Mirroring", with
its windblown synths, distorted vox and broken beats, while the title track
heralds a different variety of sounds. The beats on it are also chunky, but
the airy pads place it in a more ethereal category. "Drone Level"
is similarly lighter in spirit, with arps shimmering over the sound of
running water. The rest of the LP continues in this is more pensive vein,
with the rhythms of "Focus" loping under twinkling, reverbed
synths, before "Transformed" closes the album in a delicate melange
of dreamy pads, chopped up beats, and sounds that mimic insects and nature.
"Distorted Matter" is one of Second State's most sophisticated

A Marcel
Dettmann record? On Seilscheibenpfeiler? Yes, we know that some folks out
there probably figure that Marcel and the boys from Modeselektor exist in
totally separate universes, but they've actually all been friends for more
than two decades now. Moreover, they've also been studio neighbors for many
years, so hanging out together and playing music for each other has long been
part of these guys' regular routine. And while Marcel is best known for his
Berghain residency and his many releases on Ostgut Ton (not to mention his
own eponymous label), he did contribute a handful of tracks and remixes to
50Weapons back in the day—including a full EP back in 2011—and more recently,
he's done a couple of reworks for SSPB too. Simply put, he's part of the
family, and it was only a matter of time until we convinced him to do another
record for us. SSPB018 has been in the works for quite some time, and one of
its tracks (we're not going to tell you which one) dates all the way back to
2008 |

UNITS. Phuture only released a handful of tracks (plus an album a full decade
after their debut), but have remained a legendary act in the development of
Chicago house for their stomping 1987 single "Acid Trax", the track
that began and defined the acid house sound. The group was formed by DJ
Pierre, synthesizer fan Spanky and Herb J in 1985 as a recording entity to
produce records for Pierre to mix into his sets at several crucial Chicago
clubs. After being turned on to the high-pitched squelch of the Roland TB-303
synthesizer (marketed as a bassline machine for solo guitarists), the trio
emerged from the studio with a track they called "In Your Mind".
Ron Hardy previewed the track at his legendary club the Music Box - where it
became known as "Ron Hardy's Acid Track" - and Phuture re-made the
cut with production by Marshall Jefferson. Released on Trax Records in 1987,
the single created a dividing point between the Chicago sound before and
after it, with hundreds of "Acid Trax" imitations flooding the
local market. After it caught on in Britain as well, the single soundtracked
the wave of club madness which coalesced in the rave movement by the end of
the decade |

much appreciated and globally followed Donkey Kong Country OST recreation
project led by Louisiana-based composer and producer Jammin' Sam Miller.
Using hex SPC data crudely converted to MIDI, Jammin' Sam Miller
painstakingly recreated DKC's soundtrack note by note, by finding the
original equipment used to create it, translating the MIDI into a modern
studio context, adding in keyboard samples, and re-mixing the sounds with
added effects and mastering. Remastered for vinyl, licensed, and presented in
