The days in which challenging
music could trouble the charts are certainly long gone but there-ll always be
people into music that is more than just some background noise. There-ll also
always be people who play music you have to listen to. Blackberries are
taking that challenge for quite some time now and while remaining a kind of
best kept secret in the German Psych and Kraut/ Scene the world is beginning
to take notice. Their energetic and intense live shows earned them a rapidly
growing reputation as one of the most fascinating acts around. Big festivals
in America, Canada and even China received the message and invited the band
to add their own colour to the mix. While their last album @Greenwhich Mean
Time@ got praised in magazines like Rolling Stone and one of their American

In
the mid-seventies Nigeria, everybody loved the Black Children Sledge Funk Co.
Band. Blasting out of the bustling river port of Onitsha, their infectious,
feel-good grooves were the perfect antidote to the dark economic clouds
gathering over the country. Nigerians, young and old, lapped it up. Every
member of the band had played with The Strangers. Michael Hammedatha Moore,
sang and wrote the songs. Daniel Carlos Yakubu played guitar. Jerry Freeman
Nwokolo was on keyboards. And Benson Teteh played the drums. As a gimmick,
everyone in the band changed their last name to Black. They didn't need to.
Their music - a sunny African blend of jazz, R'n'B, rock and funk - was
extraordinary enough. 'Boogie Saturday' is a Kool & The Gang-style
celebration, guaranteed to get even the most reluctant dancer up on the
floor. 'In Search Of Yesterday', 'The Eye That Can't See' and 'Working
Together' bring the meaning to the groove, before an instrumental provides a
suitably sweaty finale. Ask any Nigerian and they'll tell you: Vol. 3

In
1977 Jake Sollo returned to Nigeria to record his first solo album, Coming
Home. His long-term band, The Funkees, had imploded in London. And his big
break with the Afro super band, Osibisa, was cut short when he went on strike
with Kiki Gyan and promptly got sacked. Rather than sit at a bar and feel
sorry for himself, Jake returned to Nigeria and got his mates together -
including the aforementioned Mr. Gyan - and headed into the EMI studios in
Lagos. The result was Coming Home, a triumphant album that combined the raw
power of The Funkees with the slick tricks he learned in London. The opening
instrumental, '404', is the track Carlos Santana would have recorded if he'd
been born in Nigeria rather than Mexico. 'Raise Your Hands' and 'I Just Wanna
Dance' are slick boogie monsters and 'Deiyo Deiyo' sees Jake displaying some
mad synth skills on Africa's only Prophet-5, a hot piece of hardware that was
transforming music in Europe and America. Coming Home is the sound of an
artist at the heights of his power. And a precursor of the skills and sounds
that would make Sollo the most sought after producer in Nigeria |

Pavel Milyakov is an artist from
Moscow whose sonic explorations have, alongside his peers, helped form a new

There
is no way to accurately describe Atomic Suplex, though many have tried: rock
and roll mayhem... loud, raucous, trashy, punky, rock and roll... like Guitar
Wolf on mescaline... that might give you some idea. However, Atomic Suplex
are one of the best live bands you could ever see, or even imagine. Screaming
guitars, brutal, primal drumming and a twisted, wailing saxophone cutting
through it all. Half of the band look like theyre being electrocuted on
stage, and Atomic Suplex himself - resplendent in his fringed leather jacket,
flying V guitar in hand and face covered by a miked-up motorcycle helmet
through which he sings - is one of the most mesmerising characters on stage
today. Atomic Suplex have toured Europe and Asia sharing the stage with such
luminaries as The Hives, Guitar Wolf, The Gories, The Adolescents, Nobunny,
The Kids, Jet Boys, Armitage Shanks, Richard Herring, The Spits, The Fat

Using elements of psychedelia, avant-garde, improvisation and underground,
'Dedicato A Le Stelle Di Mario Schifano' ('Dedicated To....) is without a
single doubt a unique record. And it's really surprising to know that its
creators were from Rome, and that it was released in 1967, the same year as
'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' and 'Sgt. Pepper's'! Mario Schifano was not
a musician, but a visionary exponent of Pop Art, a sort of Italian Andy
Warhol, who wanted to integrate his work with a group, providing the
psychedelic visuals in support of live performances. The meeting between
Schifano and the four musicians resulted in a handful of live concerts... At
the time of its release almost no-one in Italy had ever heard something like
it, unless he had flown to England to soak up the atmosphere of the Swingin'

With
its dry lyricism, warped fuzz guitars and buzzing synths, 'RF' is the sound
of Rural France distilled; an ode to both the pop nuggets of the 60s and the
collective shoulder shrug of the 90s. Rural France - a collaboration between
Tom Brown and Rob Fawkes that began in 2017 as they both adapted to leaving
London for the greener climes of Wiltshire. Armed with a bunch of jangly
demos, roughly hewn in numerous bedrooms and garages, they made their first
album 'Two Drink Maximum' in 2018, released on legendary Australian label
Half a Cow. After releasing the follow-up Damp Spirit EP, the duo decided to
forgo the studio to make their next record in Rob's garage. Inspired by the
hissy 'if it sounds good it is good' aesthetic of Guided By Voices, they set
about recording a batch of songs that refracted the Beach Boys, GBV and
Teenage Fanclub through the cynical lens of getting older. With its dry
lyricism, warped fuzz guitars and buzzing synths, F' is the sound of Rural France distilled;
an ode to both the pop nuggets of the 60s and the collective shoulder shrug

Sir Lord Baltimore was a
pioneering American heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968
by lead vocalist/drummer John Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra, and bass player
Gary Justin. Released in 1970 on Mercury Records, 'Kingdom Come' features very
fast-paced, rhythm & blues-based rock'n'roll with distortion in both the
guitar and bass. Their style of rock was considerably different from the
majority of that era's: so much that a 1971 review of this record, contained
the first documented use of the term 'heavy metal' to refer to a style of

Jayne/Wayne
County's most audacious album is also possibly among the most important
albums of its age. Released in 1979 just as the new wave was teetering on the
brink of some kind of bold step forward, Things Your Mother Never Told You
was one of the sudden shoves which sent it sprawling into its destiny.
Electro-punk starts here. Producer David Cunningham takes only a portion of
the credit: in years to come he would lead the Flying Lizards into the realm
of heavily stylized electronica. But County's songs match his ambitions all
the way, from the harsh, grating soundscapes behind 'C3''s muttered
imprecations to the soft-spoken paranoia of 'Waiting for the Marines', and
onto 'Berlin', the song that put into words everything David Bowie (among
others) tried to convey about that city via image and insinuation. It's not
all electro-art smarts, of course. 'Boy With the Stolen Face' and the
pouting, punishing 'Wonder Woman' are archetypal Electric Chairs - a reminder
of how, at the band's very best, they could run the Rolling Stones close in
the swaggering rock & roller stakes - and the murder mystery 'Wall City
Girl' could have fallen off a forgotten volume of Nuggets or Pebbles. The
title track, meanwhile, doesn't simply seethe with all the promise - sexual,
social, and societal - which made County the superstar (s)he so very nearly
was, it also lets listeners know why no one has ever truly snatched that
crown away |

Prog-rock supergroup Judas Jump
was formed by saxophonist Alan Jones, following the demise of Amen Corner,
with future Status Quo keyboardist&vocalist Andrew Bown and future
McCartney/Clapton/Pete Townsend drummer Henry Spinetti, who had both been in
Herd with Peter Frampton. At the heavy, hard-rocking end of prog, Judas
Jump's prominent woodwinds and occasional Mellotron yielded the
distinctiveness that is all over this compelling debut LP, but despite
featuring at the Isle of Wight festival and making the front cover of NME,
Judas Jump broke up by 1971, rendering Scorch a lost classic |

Following
his feature on We Miss The Crowd EP - the last addition to our Killer Cuts
series - Romeo Louisa returns to the Shall Not Fade catalog with a blissful
solo EP. Rarified Terms sees the emerging French producer come into his
powers with three soulful deep house tracks which reflect his musical
background in jazz, and see reworks from the likes of Shall Not Fade family
members and fellow collaborators, THEOS and Denyl Brook, and London duo, Funk
Cartel. The EP starts as it means to go on. A skippy house beat, jazz-like
piano chords and diva-esque vocal phrases lend "Desires" a driving
propulsion, equally suited to the dancefloor as it is to a more laid-back
listening environment. Next up, the stripped-back melody on the title track
makes way for a focus on percussion, paying tribute to Romeo's brief
residence in London with a half broken garage beat. "The House of
Jazz" sees the EP at its classiest with soulful piano chords and a
bouncing deep house rhythm, at times punctuated by drum accents which
reference the sporadic nature of jazz improvisation. Next up, enter Silver
Steps Records boss, Denyl Brook, and fraternal duo, Funk Cartel, who offer
their take on the title track before French producer THEOS rethinks "The
House of Jazz", teasing out the lower ends so that the track is led by a

welcome to the Time Is Now family one of the scene's most exciting talents.
London-based drum specialist, Bluetoof, brings the heat with a multigenre
4-track EP, featuring a weighty refix from the likes of Manchester badman,
and close compadre, Interplanetary Criminal. A multi-faceted EP to keep its
listener on their toes. The title track gets things off to a steady start
with a minimal bassline and complex percussion, inspired rhythmically by
breaks but textured by layers of hollow drums which lend it a more organic
sound. Next up, "Perilous" takes things on a darker, more
bottom-heavy turn with a traditional two-step beat and a womping bassline,
suited to the club's early hours. As to be expected, "That Got
Dark" continues in the same vein. The focus remains on percussion with a
skipping, half-broken rhythm which is interrupted momentarily by breaks
overtaken by a stomping 4/4 beat. Finally, enter Time Is Now family member,

Vassiloudis enters an inspiring new phase as he unveils his sophomore LP All
Else Fails available March 25th via Balance Music. Hailing from Athens,
Greece, Stelios Vassiloudis poses a triple threat as a composer, producer and
DJ. Having been active in the electronic music scene since the early 2000s he
has cultivated his own brand of distinctive ambience reflective of his rich
and diverse musical background; transcending the dance floor via an emotional
narrative of complex soundscapes, intricate harmonies and hypnotic rhythms.
Over the past decade Stelios has released music under various other monikers,
yet this new endeavour is his most diligent to date - allowing him to
rediscover his love for making music during the process, "I'm more
hopeful, inspired and determined than ever before." Ten years on from
the release of his debut LP, Stelios' detail-oriented offerings remain
incomprehensibly thought-provoking and thorough with this new album.

African-born, Amsterdam-based Lee Ann Roberts served up plenty of fresh
techno in the last 12 months. It has taken her to the top end of the Beatport

muffled vocals add to the intrigue as the drums march on into ever more
shadowy realms. First to remix is Glasgow's Frazi.er, a leader of the Scottish
techno scene with his standout sets at mega-events like Terminal V amongst
others. His tracks are as powerful as his DJ sets as this remix proves. It is
an explosive rave tune lacerated by machine gun synths and flat-footed,
insistent kick drums. Industrial textures and late-night paranoia all infuse
this most peak-time weapon. Next comes a remix from Charlie Sparks, an
up-and-coming young artist notorious for his high energy sounds on labels
such as NineTimesNine, COUP and Märked. His remix adds a little swing to the
drums, but there is no less urgency in the synths. The scuffed-up kicks bring
texture while the pulsing sonar pads add a sense of intergalactic space
travel as lashings of acid light up the whole track. Brussels-based Jacidorex
is a neo acid pioneer and runs a label of the same name. He has made
everything from drum & bass to techno on labels like Molekül, Acid Night
and Rave Alert and offers a superb remix here. His take on the original is
sleek and stripped back but full of techno potency. The percussion is
twisted, the synths corrugated and the groove unrelenting. 'March Of The
White Fireflies' is another EP of high-class and rib-rattling techno |

curated by Artefakt on their own imprint De Stijl. Inviting friends and
likeminded artists for extended studio improvisations crafting an EP based on
live sessions. First guest is Claudio PRC, a close friend and familiar face

Emerging
DJ and producer Yemi brings the soulful groovers to the Time Is Now white
label series. Having already received support from the likes of UKG mainstays
Sammy Virji, Conducta and Smokey Bubblin' B during his relatively youthful
career, Yemi is certainly an artist to watch. For justification, look no
further than the vibrant, uplifting 6-track EP which combines luscious vocals
and blissful piano chords to create a sound which is at once nostalgic and
fiercely forward-facing. Its two opening tracks get things off to a buoyant
start, with a bouncing 4x4 rhythm and the syrup-smooth vocals of emerging
artist and long-time friend, Bria Keely. Pair these with rattling bongos on
"Never Let You Go" and the gleeful trumpets of "Smooth Talkin"
and you have two tracks which make it impossible to keep still. "My
Heart" welcomes a change in mood with a loose two-step swing and moody
vocals: a track made for the feels. But before you get too self-indulgent,
the deep bass grooves of "Soul Food" bring the energy right back
and "Tension"'s euphoric piano chords leave things on an ecstatic

Amazingblaze
is the latest red-hot new talent to be signed up by Charlotte de Witte's
KNTXT label. The Russian artist serves up four fierce techno weapons on his
Venture EP, due for release on 25th February 2022. Though a relative
newcomer, Amazingblaze is already making big moves mixing up heavy-hitting
hard trance and techno. He has a sound that combines old school influences
with new school sound design, and it never fails to captivate the dance
floor. On this first EP for KNTXT, all of the signature Amazingblaze
essentials are here: weighty drums, massive synths and authentic atmospheres.
Says the artist, "The Venture EP was started when I was living in
Saint-Petersburg and there was a pandemic situation. Experimenting with
different shades of techno I created a pretty authentic sound which works
very well on the dance floor. After leaving Saint-Petersburg I decided to
move to Moscow, gladly the pandemic restrictions there were lifted and I
became inspired by the new city and parties where I've never been before, I
completed the EP adding some new bangers with an already experienced touch.”
Says Charlotte de Witte, “My eye fell on Amazingblaze for the first time
during the preparation of my Tomorrowland Around The World Set, where I
closed with his beautiful track "Stratosphere". A couple of months
later, I fell head over heels in love with his track "Venture",
which, I'm proud to announce, turns out to be the title track of the newest
EP on KNTXT. Venture captures every crowd of people I’ve played it to, ever
since I debuted it in my set at Exit Festival. The entire EP is an out of the
box masterpiece.” First up is the mighty 'Venture' with its pummelling drums
and turbo-charged trance stabs. They are bright and bring the energy while a
rapped vocal adds something utterly fresh. 'Inner Fire' ups the ante further
with a diva female vocal straight from the classic trance era. She brings
waves of euphoria and, after a spine tingling breakdown, the machine-gun
grooves fire on. There is terrific turbulence in the synth stabs of techno
gem 'Flashback' as well as industrial textures and walls of white noise that
bring real tension. ‘Neutron’ closes down with the most fierce groove of the
lot, this time rippled with cosmic psy trance chords and irresistible video

Serendipities
surround the collaboration between Berlin's Stroboscopic Artefacts label
founder Lucy and their most recent record with Malaysian Bangkok based
emerging artist Wanton Witch. The release culminates in the reimagining of WW
debut LP as seen and felt through the lens of Lucy. This is a follow up
full-length album by Lucy not approached as a usual remixes record, but
instead a fully fleshed out new body of work with the WW material being an
integral part of Lucy's sonic palette. Despite the label hiatus during the
first year of lockdowns, the isolation of the pandemic helped create a
fertile ground for a back and forth between Wanton Witch and Lucy's own
distinct sound palettes to collide. With the normal every day pressures of
touring lifted and enlightened by WW's sonic world, Lucy has seen this as a
positive opportunity to manifest new pathways of connectivity and process a
phase of personal growth. Not simply about the breaking of gender lines, but
also about the blurring of creative boundaries, especially when making music.
Lucy's original patronage of Wanton Witch and her relatively fresh and new
voice in the electronic music scene can be seen as a contribution to this
idea of dismantling industry norms. In more than a decade of SA operations
this is a reset moment for the label's mission focusing on empowering new
talent, refreshing and growing with them, presenting a dynamic two-way
process bewtween the label as a whole and the individual artists output.
Lucy's personal revolution has coincided with Wanton Witch's own discovery of
her musical voice and their paths have created a synchronicity. This osmosis
of thought and feeling, even through massive distances, can be so real and
tangible. Lucy's new album is a testament to the power of connective tissue
in collaboration. It is this catalyst of realisation that has allowed the
creative work to flourish under the toughest of pandemic conditions |

on vinyl, Super Dry. Jan is a well-known name on the Belgian music scene and
really needs no introduction. As a producer he has released more than 150
tracks worldwide including a gold record with Fiocco in Belgium and a number
1 hit in Holland with Scoop. Jan has been a part of so many groups and with
lots of his own productions he has appeared on countless compilation albums
and has featured on most of Bonzai's own compiled series. He recently
delivered a blistering remake of Here’s Johnny alongside DJ Liberty,
championing the nu rave era in style. DJ Ghost aka Bjorn Wendelen is another
extremely popular Belgian artist with a career spanning decades. He has been
the driving force behind several very successful projects such as Armani
& Ghost and many others and he’s a longstanding associate of the mighty
Bonzai parties and studios, having produced many tracks under the Bonzai
imprint alongside the crème-de-la-crème of Europe’s artists. Damn Hot comes
in two flavours, on the A side we have a rip-roaring dancefloor destroyer,
filled with pounding beats, industrialised synths and razor-sharp percussions.
The track builds and builds to the break, where a wall of sound rises to a
frenzied climax with a mighty drop. The Old Skool Mix takes us right back to
the good old days of hard edged, pumping rave. Monstrous kicks get things
moving as rhythmic percussions are let loose. Classic rave-style stabs and
hoover synths form the backbone of the track and are joined by cool vocal
shots. The break descends to almost subtle tones before that raucous synth
line returns, leading us to another massive drop. Two outstanding cuts that
will destroy any floor. Concluding the release, we have Super Dry, which gets
a cut to wax after a successful digital release. Getting the pulses racing
right from the get go, feisty kick drums and spritely percussions set the
tempo. The famous Ironside siren hook grabs attention as huge rave stabs
greets us on the main groove. A proper stomping, high-tempo techno pumper

Best
known for their participation in the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest, Belgian
synth pop band Pas De Deux present their complete collection. These songs
were made in 1982 and 1983, including the cult hits 'Cardiocleptomanie',
'Mani Meme' and various versions of 'Rendez-Vous'. These songs were never
together on one album. Some of them were only released as a single or on some
special compilations made in Spain and Germany after their much discussed
participation to the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 1983. The 2LP vinyl
compilation is a tangible thing, a must-have for the fans with some new
photos from the band's first video and all the info, credits and lyrics of
the songs. Remastered & compiled on this deluxe 2LP with a special etched
D side. The inner sleeves include some reactions triggered in the national
printed press at that time. Are we lucky that it was before the social media
took over? Highlights of the release: "RENDEZ-VOUS IN MÜNCHEN", for
the first time on vinyl! "At the ESC we performed Rendez-Vous, a
'minimalistic synth-pop song', accompanied by the Dieter Reith Orchestra,
directed by Freddy Sunder, on a backing track with synthesizers and drum
machines. Apart from the Eurovision broadcast on 23 April 1983, this (mono!)
recording was never released before. We've put it on this compilation,
together with 4 other alternative versions of the original song."
CARDIOCLEPTOMANIE, MANI MEME "Cardiocleptomanie was part of the
compilation 'The Hidden Tapes' by Minimal Wave in 2011. It was also the title
of a personal compilation of our songs by Veronica Vasicka of Minimal Wave
(sold out vinyl). It became our N°1 digital track (thank you Lieven De
Ridder)." "On our mini-LP Des Tailles (Parsley, 1982) we covered
Mani Meme, an unreleased song by DE NOTA. To our happy surprise, the song was
chosen by the GUCCI Epilogue collection 2020 for their campaign video. It
boosted our audience internationally." |

For
the third installment of Token's Fuga compilations, the label invites another
list of 9 cutting edge artists to put their skills to the test. Ignez, Emily
Jeanne, Altinbas & Cirkle, Alarico, Dustmite, Yant, Marcal, and Decka all
offer their unique vision of contemporary club music for a collection of
tunneling and intelligent cuts. Introducing the compilation, Ignez warms us
up with the appropriately-named 'Celestial' - a 6 minute argument between
melody and dissonance over a thick percussive line. Emily Jeanne then
continues with 'Red River Delta' to lift some of the weight with a
dissociative mind-bender. The crisp sound design and wide stereo image allow
for an exhale before Altinbas and Cirkle introduce their collaboration
'Uhlanga'. With our focus back on the body, the duo turn up the pace and
prioritize groove. With rhythm at the forefront, depth is given to the track
in the ambience, creating a rainforest-like atmosphere with resonant stabs
streaking over the tighter low-end. Alarico then picks things up by taking
advantage of this crescendo to present the energetic climax of the
compilation with 'Spit'. Hypnotism becomes almost paranoia with vocal cuts
camouflaging themselves in the pulse of the track that only releases us with
the occasional fleeting arpeggio. Walls rise and we're in concrete for
Dustmite's 'Filaments and Jaws', which wastes no time in introducing itself
with clear intentions and an imposing, low hi hat. He then lifts the record
with a hovering main synth that drifts the experience back into a nervosity
that complements the preceding track. It's Yant's turn to guide us with 'Take
the Reins' - an almost nostalgic record with infectious chord stabs over a
pounding 909, before leaving us with Marcal. 'Dancing Pursuit' is offered to
the listener as another dance floor weapon with a density in its percussion
and ambience that's balanced by the sequence of the lead synth and creates a
lot of energy. Decka then takes control with 'Fracture' with a brutally
saturated kick over whipping two-bar synth loops to close out the compilation
with a head-spinner |

in printed innersleeve. The instrumental Bruges based trio VENTILATEUR
released a promising self-titled EP in 2019. Slowly, plans were forged to
record a first full album. The corona pandemic caused those plans to be
pushed back, but it provided more time and focus for the music to grow. In
April 2021, they finally "went into the studio" to record their
debut album. The choice was made not to crawl into a classical studio, but to
loft for a week in a country house in a small town in Zeeuws Vlaanderen:
Hoofdplaat. It became the title of their first full album. For this record
the band went in search of the most unadulterated and pure form of
themselves. The result is minimalistic and stylized compositions that radiate
inner peace. Simple but catchy guitar lines, refined bass parts and purified
drum grooves are the main ingredients of this cinematic and melancholic
album. Their infectious blend of jazz, post-rock and instrumental soul
produces a unique and compelling sound reminiscent of groups like Khruangbin
and closer to home Dans Dans. The album is recorded and produced by Jeff
Claeys, who has produced albums by Millionaire, The Van Jets, Isolde Lasoen
and others, and who will also produce the new record by Zwangere Guy |

- Oriental Psychedelic Sounds and Funky Grooves. Gaïsha is a collaboration
between the Belgian-Moroccan singer, Aicha Haskal, and Les Cerveaux Lents.
Aicha Haskal’s voice is smooth and warm voice and switches seamlessly between
Arabic chants, parlando and even rap. The Arabic lyrics of the song ‘Ghalat’
were written by the Egyptian poet Abdelhamid Farag, who calls himself a
‘poète de l’ éloignement’. His lyrics are permeated with deep melancholy and
romance. The song is a tribute to Abdelhamid, who passed away in 2020. B-side
‘L’Amour Digital’ is based on ‘Sihtou Wajdan’, a traditional Muwashah.
Muwashah is a poetic form that originated in Al- Andalus (Muslim Spain in the
11th century). Aicha adds to the poem a reply in French, giving the song a
universal and interconnecting flair. ‘Ghalat’, een ode aan de Egyptische
dichter Abdelhamid Farag, knalt uit je speakers met een geweldige
levenslust”- Cutting Edge. Wie fan is van de muziek van Altin Gün, heeft met
deze nieuwe single van het Gentse Gaïsha er een leuke ontdekking bij. -
