Bala
Miller was famous for pushing boundaries. His first job was selling beer in
the Muslim north. And as a musician he'd always try to sneak in 'local'
flourishes while playing trumpet with Bobby Benson and Victor Olaiya. It was
with his band, the Pirameeds, however, that he was able to realise his dream
of incorporating northern tunes into mainstream highlife. Honed razor sharp
from a residency at the Costain Club in Kuduna, the band recorded Pyramids, a
breathtaking fusion of Hausa rhythms, jazz and funk. With its haunting
trumpet line, tribal drums and imploring Hausa chants, 'Ikon Allah', the
power of God, is Bala Miller vision writ large. 'Yo Gboko' is a New
York-style street drama, played out on the dusty streets of Northern Nigeria.
'Opportunity Knocks' is a playful burst of ska and 'Stretch Your Nose' is a
raucous James Brown fable about the dangers of lying. Bala Miller went on to
become one of Nigeria's best-loved personalities. The Costain Club became a
renowned meeting place for northern musicians. But his greatest legacy remain
Pyramids, an opus that introduced Hausa rhythms and stories to the rest of
Nigeria |

Jungle
Juice is a paean to the redemptive powers of boogie - a slab of New York
ghetto grooves getting its freak on in the jungles of Africa. Joe Kemfa
promises a magical party and that's what you get - from the straight-ahead
party grooves of 'Jungle Magic Music' to the more slinky and sinuous 'Jungle
Juice.' Hailing from Warra in Nigeria's Delta region, Joe Kemfa made his name
with The Junkers and the Don Bruce Band. He recorded a few singles with Larry
Ifedioranma from Ofo The Rock Company before disappearing to Europe. He
returned in 1978 with two Germans in tow and, together with Cameroonian
drummer Ali Ringo, they formed Aura, Joe's backing band on Jungle Juice. The
best tracks are the freakiest. 'I Got To Make It' bemoans the cost of living,
before becoming a stoned plea to the Lenleys, Joe's very own Lijadu Sisters,
to boogie it on a Saturday night. Freaky and funky, Jungle Juice is the sound
of James Brown and Parliament jamming after a night on some nasty Delta home
brew. One listen and you'll want to get your hands on some Jungle Juice too |

Never achieving the glory they
deserved, Goliath was formed in Terre Haute, Indiana, a psychedelic-prog
offshoot of Sons of Sound, formed by rhythm section Bill and Steve Peters,
with vocalist Jim Kitchen. Future Eagles manager Irv Azoff raised their profile,
but guitarist David Graham succumbed to drugs: other members left to form
Raven in 1974, so the band recruited guitarist Paul Bays and keyboardist Dave
Wood to cut Hot Rock ^ Thunder for Ray Allen's Bridges label, blending hard
rock, wistful prog, and country shades, with Bays and Wood defining melodic
features. It's another lost gem, ripe for rediscovery! |

his maiden collaboration project with the immensely talented Furz, Ali Demir
is not looking to slow things down any time soon with his record label. The
Iceland-based label is not only carrying the aesthetic set in this debut but
delving further into it. Distrakt Audio proudly presents the secret
ingredient, the multi-talented Patagonian soul and Pryma Records co-owner,
Dani Labb! Up first is Dani Labb's mind-bending, bass-driven groove,
"Atemporal" that builds through signature drums and dystopic pads.
It's an absolute club cut. Followed by a darker one, "Adori Vita
Vis" is a perfect sound for that meditative, hazy, late morning mood.
Much like the previous release, Ali provides the pleasure of his calm and
refreshing, yet unique take of dancefloor heaters. "Rewind the
Mind" is a hypnotic bass jam, tightened with deeply atmospheric pads and
sparkled with floating synth lines. It's a must-have opener. "Trip to
Andes" is a subtle club cut offering a juicy sub bassline that propels
the track forward and balances it with dreamy melodic elements. This
post-pandemic masterpiece is a surefire filled with instant all-timer

Demon And Eleven Children (1971), this is the album the beautiful Carmen Maki
recorded with the band Blues Creation, this heavy guitar blues rocker is
bluesier than Eleven Children but still has some nice guitar work. Maki was
probably one of the strongest voices of Japanese rock and is featured here
doing her finest Grace Slick meets Janis impression and very well too! Lots
of brutal, non/stop wailing guitar but some mellow, bluesy psychedelic rock
numbers too. Maki went on to form her own band, Oz, but this is the

Hailing from Kyushu, Japan from
the early 80's CONFUSE is synonomous with Japanese Hardcore across the world.
Inventors of the 'raw punk' approach, an hyper-distorted version of the
classic '82-brit punk formula, they ended influencing a whole plethora of
latter European hardcore bands like Extreme Noise Terror or Doom, and the
whole 90's ".crust" scene. This discography LP features tracks from
the "Nuclear Addicts" 7" from 1984, the "Contempt The

The
story of northern English band Blitz follows something of an unusual
trajectory. Formed in the small industrial town of New Mills in Derbyshire
(once known for coal mines, cotton mills and calico bleaching), Blitz began
as a hardcore concern, their first two albums considered classics of the
treet punk' and Oi subgenres of the early 1980s, but third album Second
Empire Justice shifted their sound in a totally unexpected post/punk&new
wave direction, with intricate arrangements, greater musical complexity and a
generally softer style. Unfortunately for the group, the album was a
commercial failure that spelled their ultimate demise, yet just as the band
bit the dust, bassist Neil McLennan and guitarist Nidge Miller formed Rose of
Victory with drummer Gary Bowler and engineer Nigel Beverley on vocals,
cutting a one/off version of Bowie's Suffragette City, coupled with an
equally intriguing Miller instrumental on the flip. Rose of Victory never
lasted beyond this initial offering, however, leaving the single a unique
memento of their faltering creativity |

Smoke and Mirrors Soundsystem is
my imaginary dream band, born from the lockdown of the global pandemic. I had
songs, ideas, riffs, chords, lyrics , but no band to play or record with. I
reached out to many of the musicians I've played with, met on tour, or known
through my love of Soul, Ska, Reggae and Rocksteady over the 34 years I've
been playing in bands. Any of these great artists with access to microphones,
computers and internet was a potential contributor. Dozens of great players
took my compositions and sent tracks to me to edit, mix and arrange. In my
mind's eye, I can see us all together, playing festivals, sending the spirit
of this music to you, my cherished listener. I get tears and goosebumps
listening to these songs over and over. The love of this music transcends our

Between
producing landmark albums with the likes of Azymuth, Marcos Valle, and
Sabrina Malheiros, recent years have seen Daniel Maunick flourishing as a
solo artist with acclaimed releases on Eglo Records, Mother Tongue, Visions,
AKO Beatz (under his Dokta Venom alias), and of course, Far Out Recordings.
His sophomore solo album Persistence is an exemplary culmination of the
momentum Maunick has built since his 2019 debut Macumba Quebrada, which
earned support from Moodymann, Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Ron Trent, Palms
Trax, Derrick Carter and Moxie to name just a few. Since collaborating with
Shy FX for his first ever release at the age of fifteen (a now impossible to
find single sided jungle acetate), Maunick has remained embedded in the
fabric of the culture, from early work for the legendary Talkin’ Loud label
to notching credits with Terry Caliier, Paul Weller, Ski Oakenfull, Brenda
Russell, and his father’s legendary brit-funk outfit Incognito. And for
almost two decades he’s served as producer for a long string of classic and
future-classic Far Out albums, most recently Alex Malheiros' Tempos Futuros.
As on his previous Far Out opuses (most recently the Musica Encantada EP),
Persistence sees Maunick continue to playfully use foundations of traditional
afro-brazilian rhythms, heard in the sultry samba swing of 'Arraiá', the
pulsating batucada enveloping the bassy synth stabs in “Remnants of Joy”, and
spectral cuicas throughout the blissfully bumping ‘Illusions’. But going
beyond his trademark nods to Brazil, he reflects on his junglist roots with
the emotionally charged ‘Love Is Gone’, and flexes his deep house muscles
with the late night magic of ‘Just Deserts’ and ‘Addicted’. The sheer variety
on show is testament to the wide scope of influences and experiences Maunick
has accumulated and absorbed in his career to date. It’s also evident that
after years spent with jazz funk masters like Azymuth and Incognito, as well
as hitmakers like Marcos Valle, Maunick has reached a new calibre with his
compositional prowess alongside his astoundingly accomplished studio skills.

from the melting pot of Berlin, Luca Musto serves up a solid and fresh house
dish in his first album on Moodfamily. The songs stretch the imagination and
touch the borders of hip hop and electronic beats. He intertwines his own
musical journey with the sounds of his hometown. It is also the attempt at a
new genre by blending hip hop elements with electronic music to create
something unique. This funky fusion expresses itself in three original
tracks. “What We Witness” introduces us into the rhythmic exploration of the

next release on Cultivated Electronics Ltd shines a light on some of the
fresh talent emerging from within the Electro scene across this double-vinyl
12" which will be pressed on balck and colour vinyl editions. IMOGEN has
enjoyed a whirlwind rise, and her reputation as one of the most talented
newcomers is well recognised. Her discography includes releases on Earwiggle,
Shared Meanings and fabric where she is also a resident DJ, and presents a
monthly radio show on NTS. She opens the compilation with the tough beats and
twisted melodies of 'Anatta'. ARMEC (Robbie Mecrow) is an Electro and Acid
producer from Manchester who has already impressed with releases on Nebulae,
Echocentric, Further Electronix and most notably 20/20 Vision. His beat-led
track 'Acute' delivers a serious punch with plenty of sub-bass. Russia's
SERGEY TIMOSHOV is the promoter and resident DJ at Warehouse, held weekly at
the Propaganda club in Moscow. Here he utilises that experience in fine style
for his club-ready 'Electro Beats 1'. UK artists OBSERV and CYPHON
collaborated on their debut EP for Gunfinger Food last year, but here they
deliver 1 track apiece. Obzerv brings pure destruction on his tumultuous
track 'Octro'. While Cyphon, known for his live hardware sets, supporting
artists like Assembler Code, Radioactive Man and Afrodeutsche, plus releases

KHALILIAN is probably best known as one half of US duo Joonam (with Elon
Admony) who have been self-releasing on their Balagan label for the last few
years. 'Valda' pitches things down with Detroit-esque chords and a deep,
subterranean atmosphere. FAZACK is a 21 year old DJ/Producer from Cardiff now
based in Bristol. Better known as a DJ, he's spent the past 9 year collecting
records and garnering inspiration from all aspects of dance music. For the
last 3 years he's focused on production and draws on cosmic influences for
his contribution, 'Weightless'. LINDSAY GREEN is one half of Co-Accused,
long-standing residents of Glasgow's prolific underground club scene via
their club nights in Paisley's Club 69 and the launch of their Co-Accused

The
scottish musician, born in 1953 in Port Glasgow, is one of the most eclectic
artist of the so-called minimal wave scene. Alongside german singer Claudia
Brücken (vocalist of the hit-makers Propaganda) he formed Act a short-lived
synthpop group signed to ZTT Records in the late eighties. Licensed by Cherry
Red in 1982, the double album 'Contradictions' is the third effort in Leer
high and rising career. After the seminal debut on Industrial Records with
Robert Rental - The Bridge (1979) - Leer ventured on a solo career with the
brave synth wave of 'Better From America' and his personal masterpiece
'Contradictions'. The latter is such an enigmatic piece of work, with alien
melodies as in the case of the 'Soul Gypsy' infectious white funk. The whole
album was recorded in his living room at home onto 4-track using borrowed
equipment (Korg synth, Ult-sound drum computer & guitars) from his friend
Morgan Fisher. Featuring Leer's haunting, uncertain vocal - recorded quietly,
so as not to wake his girlfriend in their bedsit! - crooning over a minimal
bass pulse and discreet whines and washes of primitive Wasp synthesiser, it
retains its peculiar lo-fi magic four decades on |

WEVAL's music for the very first time, you might wonder from what geniuses'

Intrepid Skin imprint returns for an outlandish and typically heavy-hitting
fourth release, fresh from the somewhat outrageous underground of the current
South Korean electronic music scene. Marcus L is resident at Faust in Seoul,
and first met SPFDJ when she played the city in 2018. In the time since, the
two have shared bills in both London and Mumbai, where Marcus's distinct
taste and technical dexterity became more than obvious to the Intrepid Skin
founder, who dares to exclusively reveal that Marcus is "a really fun
guy." This sense of playfulness is immediately apparent throughout
"Kimchi Slap", which takes inspiration from the beloved and
