Before
he was Nigeria's self-proclaimed Mr Lover Boy, Felix Lebarty was an upcoming
musician in the country's Edo-Delta region. His big brother, Aigbe, was a
legendary Highlife bandleader, but Felix paid his dues playing guitar with
Thony Shorby Nwenyi and the Collection of Stars, along with fellow 'star'
Mighty Flames bassist, Willy Nfor. Perversely, Girls For Sale was released
after Lover Boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in Nigerian
music history. It is a collection of tracks Lebarty made early in his career,
when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less
practised. In 'Come True', Lebarty actually admits to a girl that he hasn't
got any money. He begs a girl to love him in 'Love Me Kiss Me' and pleads with
a rival to give him a break in 'Don't Take My Girl'. He even takes a dig at
Aigbe, his more successful sibling, in 'Mr Big Brother'. It's hardly what
you'd expect from the disco god behind Lover Boy, who went on to have 19
children with 7 different women. To me, that's what makes Girls For Sale
worth checking out. It's gritty, lo-fi and melodic, like The Apostles with a
subtle a nod towards the Jackson Five, sung with endearing insecurity. What's

In
the early 1980s, Nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil
money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art
recording equipment. With the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new
breed of producers like Lemmy Jackson, Jake Sollo, Tony Okoroji and Nkono
Teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. Such was the
fate of Sony Enang with Don't Stop That Music. Sony was no ordinary musician.
As keyboard player and vocalist with The Founders, he'd recorded some of the
most seminal albums to come out of Eastern Nigeria. But his album is best
known for being produced by Jake Sollo, and featuring the song, 'Discolypso,'
that came to represent Sollo's very particular sound. Not that Sony Enang should
be too concerned. 'Don't Stop That Music' is at turns cosmopolitan, sexy,
hip, romantic, glamorous and witty. It's got sophisticated dance floor
fillers ('Don't Stop That Music' and 'Where Were You') chirpy, good-time
boogie ('Hold On' and 'You Are The One') and a bit of calypso-reggae sunshine
to boot ('Life'). In short, it's the sound of a confident and prosperous
Nigeria. A sound as sophisticated as anywhere else in the world, but with a

Numbers formed in 1977 with vocalist/rhythm guitarist Nick McAuley, bassist
Wayne Kingston, drummer Lee Gardener and future Massive Attack guitarist
Angelo Bruschini. Heavily influenced by Bowie's Berlin trilogy, early recordings
surfaced on compilations issued by the local Heartbeat label in 1979, namely
the power- punk-pop 'Alternative Suicide' on 4 Alternatives and the funked-up
'Cross Slide' on Avon Calling. This excellent compilation pairs those songs

The second Traffic Sound album,
released in 1970 after their Latin rock masterpiece "Virgin",
deserves to be considered one of the greatest recordings of its time, even
internationally, as essential as the most hailed works of Cream, Caravan or
Led Zeppelin that served as a bridge for rock music between the 60s and 70s.
The band incorporates complex arrangements and long song structures with
which they approach psychedelic and prog music. However, the immediacy of
songs like esterday's Game', with a fierce and contagious guitar riff, or
chicama Way', a terrific anthem, clear any possible doubt about the sound
principles of the band: hypnotic, groovy ROCK, in capital letters! The band's
music was featured in season 3 of NARCOS. Presented in facsimile tri-fold
sleeve and pressed on 180g vinyl. |

official release on the newly established Departure Lounge label, aiming to
pay homage to evocative, ambient driven house with nostalgic tinged floor
movers reminiscent of bygone times, whilst retaining a progressive edge.
DL001 debuts this sound foremost on the A-side, featuring "Consider It
Spun" - which endeavours to traverse the barrier between deep and
minimal house, built from atmospheric pads bending and weaving amongst
rolling percussion and driving string sections, cemented atop a subby bass
line with tripped and delayed vocals pinning the track together - primed and
ready to lay down suitably on discerning dance floors. The B-side features
"Labour of Love" - a sedating and melodic take to its A-side
counterpart. We witness a more moody transition with warm delayed keys,
accompanied with a skippy drum pattern and gliding pads rising to a sparkling
crescendo beneath sweeping, yet stabby percussive elements. A perfect
accompaniment to the start or end of the evening |

repress - Byron the Aquarius (aka Byron Blaylock), an accomplished keys
player as much as he is a producer, has a deep love for the organic side of
music. This shines through in his creations, back to his debut EP in 2007.
More recently, Blaylock's skillful jazz beats have found a home on the one
and only Jeff Mills' Axis Records. From his birthplace in Birmingham Alabama,
Blaylock has grown into an international figure of acclaim for his
explorative compositions. Already having two successful EPs with Shall Not
Fade under his belt - most recently marking the labels' 50th release with
What Up Doe? Vol.2 - Byron the Aquarius returns for a gorgeous double LP.
Expect the smoothness of deep house, melodic instrumental hip hop production
of the J Dilla creed along with tight jazz pieces. The New Beginning LP
showcases range and expertise from the off, exploding with pulsing discordant
jazz in "Amaya's Voyage". Psychedelic g-funk is the MO of
"Smoke One For Huckaby", before a B-side milieu of jazz and hip hop
reminiscent of Guru's Jazzmatazz. The album settles into a deep groove across
its C-side, the highlight of which is the percussive workout of
"Underground Was Black", complemented delicately with dazed pads
and buoyant but smokey lounge jazz sounds in "Cosmic Jazz". Off
kilter hip hop shines through in "Last Time We Gonna Do This" and
its eclectic sound palette, then we are blindsided by the heavy electro
distortion of "The End Of The World". The record closes with a
collaboration of the genres explored throughout, pieced together into the
pumping "Lost People of Tron". The album feels like a lap of honour
around all the influences in Byron The Aquarius' sound - it's yet another
artistic triumph |

are happy to welcome yet another new face to our ever growing artist roster,
though Rico Puestel is definitely not an unknown name for fans of electronic
music! Rico is - amongst many other things - a trained pianist, a
self-trained guitarist, a drummer, a musicologist, a Zappa enthusiast, a
struggler, a neurotic, a martyr of art and, most-notably: A genuine,
perpetually driven music producer! Gregor has been a fan of Rico´s music for
years, and - being blown off his socks by his recently released full length
album Obi Thine Xi - had to ask Rico for some original music to be released
on Break New Soil. Et voila: „Afar“ landed in our mailbox like a beacon of
light in these dark times for club culture! On top of the three outstanding
original tracks, we couldn´t be happier to have Alexander Kowalski working
his magic on „Axioms". Once again, Alexander delivered an example to
underline his status of being one of the most in-demand producers in the
realm of modern electronic music! To round things off we are stoked to
present a full-on peaktime rework of „Afar“ by the duo of the moment that is

Kavinsky is a zombie who came
back from the dead after his Testarossa crashed in 1986. His first song,
"Testarossa Autodrive", was an instant success, and was followed by
two singles. In 2007, he was chosen by Daft Punk to open their now legendary
"Alive" tour. In 2011, his track "Nightcall", produced
with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, became the theme song for the film
"Drive", and consequently a worldwide success. Kavinsky's first
album, "Outrun", was released in 2013, followed by a collaboration
with The Weeknd on the song "Odd Look". In 2022, Kavinsky is back
with "Reborn", his second album recorded at the famous Motorbass
studio in Paris, due March 25th. "Renegade" which was recorded in
collaboration with Victor Le Masne and Gaspard Augé (half of Justice)
reinvents the French producer’s unique recipe: dark mood but with a
thunderous groove. With a vocal assistance from Cautious Clay, « Renegade »

The
Coastal Invasion’ highlights the golden age of big band cumbia and the
maestro who is often seen as Colombia’s most influential composer, Lucho
Bermudez. Bermudez was a key figure who modernised the tropical music of
Colombia's Caribbean coast. At the beginning of the 20th century, this music
was largely looked down on. Bermudez changed all that by injecting a modern,
jazzy big band sound to the Afro-Colombian sounds from his native region. The
infectious Afro-Amerindian dance rhythms of Lucho Bermudez y su Orquesta took
over the elite nightclubs of Bogota and Medellin and from there, his music
spread all over Latin America. For many Colombians, the songs of Lucho
Bermudez and his wife and starlet singer Matilde Diaz represent the sound of
their nation. This compilation contains a selection of the music of Lucho
Bermúdez y su Orquesta recorded during the years that they lived and worked
in Medellín, probably the best work the orchestra ever recorded |

Glasgow’s
Gary Beck is back on Second State with weighty 4 tracker “Supervan EP”.
Long-standing techno force Gary Beck will return to Berlin’s Second State
with a grooving and cerebral 4 track EP. A pillar of Scotland’s techno scene,
Gary has appeared regularly at some of the globe’s most respected venues and
festivals including Womb Tokyo, fabric, Output NYC and Awakenings, to name a
few. Title track ‘Supervan’ opens with bouncing bass and rattling percussion.
A chopped-up vocal is introduced and commands the track forward as it
ascends, with the kick battling to harden the track over the grooving melody
and anthemic keys. Next up is the spirited cut ‘Psycho Babble’. A resounding
sample attempts to cry out over the jacking bass and kick combo, calling out
in ecstasy at intervals of the track. A minimal hi-hat jumps throughout but
retracts as the track increases tempo and gallops towards the end, where Beck
incorporates breakbeat elements for the final leg. ‘Sparks’ follows with
rhythmic shakers and hi-hats juxtaposing each other under the monologue of
two young punters. The conversation adds a narrative to the track as it
intensifies along with a gritty buzzing element. The voices become distorted
as the track builds to crescendo, with the sample and music working together
in unison to unravel the story of the character’s night. The finale ‘Pink
Castles’ is a pacy and hypnotic trip, conjuring up the energy of both a
peak-time workout and high-tempo closer. Haunting vocals and icy synths swirl
around the driving elements and atmospherics, engulfing the listener into the

One
of the most important electronic albums of all time now in the rebound.
Cloaked in mystery, Liaisons Dangereuses had an unusually powerful and
alluring vision designed by Chrislo Haas from D.A.F. and Beate Bartel from
Mania D. They found a rather magical singer named Krishna Goineau for their
album who sang with passionate despair in French, Spanish, German, and a
fractured gaggle of Broken English. This unbelievably romantic album was
mixed at Conny Plank Studios and originally released on vinyl in October
1981. With an infectous collage of electronic rhythms, perhaps not heard of
nor imagined before, combined with explosions and scenery changes to keep
listeners entirely disoriented from start to finish, Liaisons Dangereuses
paved the way for most all EBM music since it's release. The album carried
the single ''Los Ninos del Parque'' which became an instant and obvious hit
on every dance floor it captured, and twenty-two years later still remains a
champion. Countless movements of electronic music (Detroit Techno, Chicago
House and Electroclash to name a few) have cited the Liaisons Dangereuses

the continuous stream wouldn't provide sufficient answers for long. Observing
rudimentary structures sewer sender became tantalized with a vision of
reverbation from lower vaults of confinement. Waves reminiscent of solid
concrete yet deeply seated below the ocean surface form and merges with the
narrow surroundings. Manitou takes the first step by setting a clear form for
something deep seated. Proceeding extends the notion of martinous inaugural
appointment "Procedure" with a take on industrial drums reverbing
from the depths. Never (Anthem) takes the first part of the EP to fruition
with stripped anthemic stabs and alarms to a strict and cleanly distorted
beat. Jargon solidifies concrete solid with enigmatic percussions over jaunty
kick patterns. I have lost again focus on a dramatic narrative with hypnotic
vocal stabs rolling over an intense kick and climatic builds. Needlessness
frames the entire release combining both the concrete solid and the deep sea
seated with again a take on martinous inaugural release "Needless"?
leaving the frail thematic stab subdued by syncopated kicklike percussion and
soaring hihats to create a toollike appearance |

After
ten years 12 Inch Lovers has become a household name not only because of
their parties but also because of the fantastic vinyl samplers they released
over the past few years, which were sold out in no time and have become true
collector's items. They now continue in the same vein and once again bring a
fresh and contemporary mix of hard to find, original house classics or even
classics that never had a vinyl release. Therefor these samplers should not
be missed in any 12 Inch Lovers collection. Sampler 5 begins with the
breakthrough record from Norwegian producer "Finnebassen". "If
You Only Knew" was a big hit for him in 2012, the record was best known
for that hypnotic Aaliyah sample used throughout the entire track. A2 brings
the very rare remix of this uber classic "The Sound Of Violence" by
"Cassius". The "Franco Cinelli" remix is a very
successful approach to this classic. On B1 we find a real anthem. "World
Cup" by "Kiko" is a delightful classic from 1999 but to this
day it is impossible to imagine today's DJ sets without it. B2 then brings
the delicious "Still In The Groove" from "Reckless", of
course in that famous "Def Offenders" remix. "Phil
Fuldner" is still very active as a DJ and producer today. You can find
his dreamy "Lights Off" from 2010 on C1. And speaking of dreams.
"Winter" by "Aril Brikha" is another incredible classic
that should definitely not be missed in your collection.On D1 we find the
Australian and headstrong singer "Sia" with her classic "The
Girl You Lost To Cocaine", but in that fantastic and hard to find
"Stonebridge Vocal" mix. Last on Sampler 5 we dive back into the
nineties with the memorable club classic "Closer" by
"Liquid" on D2 |

Thirty
years ago, British youth culture was changed forever. The Summer of Love in
1988 saw House music spread like wildfire over the country, with thousands of
young people dancing in fields, clubs and any spaces they could find. One of
the tracks that truly encapsulated this magical time was Stirling Void's
'It's Alright'. Originally released on Chicago's seminal label DJ
International, the spine-chilling lyrics of positivity resonated in the
hearts and minds of the Acid House generation and are more relevant in
today's climate than ever. To celebrate 30 years since the Summer of Love,
Toolroom is proud to present a monumental remix package of this all-time
classic, alongside the fully re-mastered original. First up on remix duties
is one of house music's most intriguing artists. Adesse Versions has a back
catalogue of highly sought-after records, and he's treated this remix with
utmost respect, keeping the track's essence and identity, but adding a new
layer of raw warmth and subliminal melody. Next up, House legend DJ Spen has
stepped up to the plate with his own interpretation. His jazzy, soulful keys
have added a layer of polish and musicality to the track, which combine
beautifully with Paris Brightledge's iconic vocals. Release Date: 5th October

Marc
Acardipane's Pitch-Hiker, originally released under Marc's Pilldriver alias,
is without doubt one of the foundation tracks of European hardcore. From the
moment it was released in 1995 it caused shockwaves with its stripped down,
kick drum focused approach. Gone were the hoovers, sirens, breakbeats and
vocal samples of that era's hardcore and instead a stark new minimalism
emerged, focusing equally on the kick drum itself and the negative space and
air around it. Like all groundbreaking records it was soon followed by an
endless stream of unofficial rip-offs, re-edits and remixes, none of which
got close to the perfection of Marc's original. Now for the first time
Pitch-Hiker gets officially remixed showing the level of trust Marc has in
Perc Trax and Perc's own affection for PitchHiker and for Marc's enduring
legacy as an electronic music innovator. First up is Marc himself with his
own take on his classic. Keeping the distinctive reverb soaked kick hits of
his 1995 original mix he adds dive-bombing synths and scything hi-hats to
increase the energy of the original mix without losing any of its dark charm.
Next label boss Perc adds more weight to the original's unmistakable kick
drums, slowly building up the tension until his remix drops into the kind of
noise assault not heard on Perc Trax since Tymon's devastating remix of
Perc's own 'Hyperlink'. Kick drum specialists Ghost In The Machine step up
next and work the original mixes' warping kick drums to the max. Updating and
strengthening the track perfectly whilst keeping the sense of space that gave
the original mix so much character. Finally Sissel Wincent and Peder
Mannerfelt team up for their Perc Trax debut following on from Perc's remix
of 'Sissel & Bass' back in 2019. Flipping the script completely Sissel
& Peder add multiple vocal hooks and fuse the original mix's 4/4 kick
with half-speed broken beat rhythms to serve up a very different, but still
successful interpretation of the original mix |
