The Rock Company (originally known as OFO The Back Company) were Nigeria's
first acid-rock band. Blending Hendrix and Deep Purple with shamanism and a
pro-black philosophy, they cut their teeth at Fela Kuti's Afrika Shrine,
developing a fearsome live reputation that intimidated every other band in
Lagos. No one wanted to follow the guys from OFO, not even Fela himself. Lead
by the charismatic Larry Ifedioranma, OFO The Rock Company considered
themselves a musical cult. Their live shows were a heady mix of mind-melting
musicianship, mysticism and theatre. In 1973 the band tour Europe and
Fonkafrika gathers together the best of those performance. The moments
captured range from small intimate gigs in London, where you can hear the
conversation amongst the crowd, to an astonishing gig in East Germany where
they played before 900,000 people. The undoubted highlight is the extended
prog-rock wig out of 'Ayaya,' recorded at the Berlin gig, before an obviously
delighted crowd. See if you can pick out the moment where the band were
joined on stage by a long-haired hippy who insisted on playing guitar. They
didn't realize it at the time but it was Carlos Santana. It was in Europe
that the band fell apart, riven in two by Ifedioranma's increasingly autocratic
rule. Fonkafrica remains as a precious testament to what the band did best -

The
self-proclaimed funkiest band on the west coast of Africa, the Heads Funk
Band, could arguably make that claim for the whole continent. Featuring the
slick guitar of Felix 'Feladey' Odey, the slinky drumming of Eddie Offeyi and
the swirling keyboard chops of Kevin 'Fortune' Coburn, nobody was funkier.
And that's not even taking into account the dance floor monsters they were
releasing at the same time as Akwassa. Cold Fire was their second album as
the Heads Funk Band. Where their first album, Hard World, was in a hurry to
get you on the dance floor, on Cold Fire the funk is given room to breathe.
The title track has a dark ghetto groove, straight from the mean streets of
New York. 'Got To Know' has a loose, feel good vibe. 'Put On Your Funky Shoes'
and the instrumental, 'Funky Port Harcourt' live up to their names. With
Feladey laying down a hybrid chicken scratch/wah-wah sound over Eddie
Offeyi's assured drumming, and 'Fortune' Coburn supplying the free-range
keyboards, this is a band at the height of their powers. Cold Fire is killer
stuff and proof that in the mid-seventies Nigeria was producing the funkiest

Grooves: "This story began in 2008, at that time I dreamed of launching
my own music label and was searching for something unique. I was looking for
music in different sources and came across the Frunk29's tracks, this is how
I met Marat Shainsky, his release was the first on the Biotronic Records (the
label I owned in the mid-00s). Later Marat introduced me to his friend -
Sergey Lazarev, aka Lazzich and we immediately put together the next release
for the label. It was wonderful and hypnotizing music I had never heard
before. After some time we prepared the material for the first Biotronic
Vinyl, which was authored by Lazzich, but the release did not happen, due to
certain circumstances. And now, 15 years later, the idea comes true, we release
the Lazzich mini-album on the Hanagasumi 04. Although Sergey is no longer
with us, but his music will live forever. Thanks to everyone who took a part
in the search for materials, archives, projects, sketches. Special thanks to
Shipulina Yana for providing information and cooperation, Marat Shainsky for
the advice and tracks searching, Matvey Andreenko for giving me the large
media archive of Lazzich's works, Denis Rooter for designing the cover, Semen
Pupyshev for mixing the found Sergey's Reason-projects". Produced by

King Tubby VS. Scientist tracks. These were some of the last 'classical' dub
works created before dancehall ultimately mutated into a
technologically-driven sound that largely did away with organic instruments
and although these works already point in that direction, they still sound
entirely fresh today because of the superb musicianship of the Roots Radics
and the guiding hand of Jah Thomas in the producer's chair, as well as
Scientist and his cohorts, working their dub magic at King Tubby's studio.

Some
serious sweetness from Jex Opolis on Bad Timin' the sub label of the beloved
Good Timin' records. While 2018's Bad Timin' Vol. I charted a course into the
art of darkness, this second volume re-imagines the imprint's focus and aims
for a more colorful--and inclusive--dancefloor experience. Along with some
searing club dynamics, many of those Jex touchstones we all know and love are
here in full force: The playful melody, the disdain for genre, the bad puns
... On EP opener "Fought Experiment," Jex pumps the breaks during a
drive on the Big Beat highway, with buzz-saw FX, turntablist scratching and a
bubbling bassline along for the ride. Meanwhile, two mixes of "Soft
Guidance" let the Canadian producer reflect on his late 90s "Global
Underground" phase--while swapping out Oakenfold for wash-n-fold, given
Jexy's newfound domesticity. Closing out the EP, "Scott Says" keeps
the BPMs high and filters dubby techno through a deep house sieve, all while
namechecking a little-known Edmonton techno producer. Recommended!! |

Kavinsky is a zombie who came
back from the dead after his Testarossa crashed in 1986. His first song,
"Testarossa Autodrive", was an instant success, and was followed by
two singles. In 2007, he was chosen by Daft Punk to open their now legendary
"Alive" tour. In 2011, his track "Nightcall", produced
with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, became the theme song for the film
"Drive", and consequently a worldwide success. Kavinsky's first
album, "Outrun", was released in 2013, followed by a collaboration
with The Weeknd on the song "Odd Look". “Cameo” is the third and
last stepping stone which lead to Kavinsky’s long-awaited new album “Reborn”,
out March 25th. Its raging funky beat and syncopated synths offer the most
perfect case for American sensation Kareen Lomax to deliver a warm though
exhilarating vocal performance. Robot disco guitar bumps all along and that

Karma
Sutra were an anarcho pacifist band from Luton, Bedfordshire who formed in
the early 80's after the demise of the legendary the Phallic Symbols. Karma
Sutra only had one release at the time - an album self released in 1987
called Daydreams of a Production Line Worker which came towards the end of
their lifetime. Sealed Records now release the earlier years of demos and
compilation tracks on a 15 track round up. Be Cruel with Your Past and all
Who Seek to Keep you There includes their first and primitive demo The New
Economy Roast from 1983. It's very basic and has a Bullshit Detector
Compilation quality to it. A few years later came the second demo Shoppers
Paradise which is the best material Karma Sutra recorded. Six tracks of well
produced classic 80's Anarcho punk with a driving sound. It's passionate,
tuneful and politically aware. How this wasn't released at the time on vinyl,
is a travesty. Also included is two tracks from the Mortarhate Compilations
Who? What? Why? When? Where? and We Don't Want Your Fucking Law!. Finally the
last three tracks were from the final line up of the band and were recorded
with Spon from UK Decay adding more post punk elements to the sound. The LP
comes with a 40 page booklet of Lyrics, handouts, fanzine interviews and
statements |

precise and cutting productions. Their reputation for a strikingly energetic
live show brought them into clubs and festivals around the globe. After
launching their own label n-PLEX and releasing two original EPs on it,
NPLX003 marks a re-release of their most successful record "Dahinter Das
Gesicht" ("Behind It The Face"), which was released on
aufnahme+wiedergabe] in 2017 primarily. After 1500 sold out copies it still
remains highly demanded as one of the most influential records for actual
EBM-Industrial-influenced Techno. This re-issue comes in a special edition of
remastered track versions and also includes an edit of its most notorious
track "Es Zieht Mich" as addition to the four original tracks. The

Rarely does an artist pay homage

supermarket bang in the centre of Grantham from the early 1970's up until
around 1980," explains Jason Williamson. "My mum would take me
there and I'd always have a large coke in a plastic orange cup surrounded by
varnished wood trimmings and big lamp shades with flowers on them. Beige
bricks with bright yellow points of sale and large black foam letters
surrounded you and this is why we called the album 'Key Markets'. It's the
continuation of the day to day and how we see it, the un-incredible
landscape." "The album was recorded in various periods between
summer 2014 through to October of that year. We worked fast as we normally
do, the method was the same as the other albums and like the other two, the
sound has naturally moved itself along. 'Key Markets' is in places quite
abstract but it still deals heavily with the disorientation of modern
existence. It still touches on character assassination, the delusion of

Arthur is the kind of character you just couldn't make up. I first met him
while he was dancing in front of me while I played at No Way Back, back when
it was at 1515 Broadway. He later asked me to come play his living room in
Memphis, "I have a Funktion One sound system" he said. His friends
were pretty cool so I said why not? During my set on the dance floor in this
small room I saw Larry Heard and Chad White dancing. The next time I played
his living room, Larry Heard came over to Adam's the day before the party
with a USB stick around his neck featuring some of his 10,000 unreleased
songs, I had specially requested to hear some of his 303 songs, since he had
a 303 for a few years but never released anything with it. He also played me
a NYE party ad with Robert Owens improvising vocals that was so amazing I had
to hear it like 10 times. Adam eventually released on Alleviated and later
invited me to play a private pool party once he moved out of the city, but I
couldn't make it. He lives in rural Arkansas where he records music with his
massive Buchla system, as he did for this year's Outer Space Room part of the
No Way Back stream, doing a stunning ambient performance directly after
Suzanne Ciani's set. Like I said, he's someone you just couldn't make up. His
day job is putting people to sleep before life saving surgeries, which is
perfect because his music lives somewhere in the states between sleeping and
waking, a perfect psychedelic dream logic. His tunes like "Down Down Falling
Down" are pure somnambulist groove, a uniquely bizarre form of hypnosis
that drifts through the dream state into our realm and back, deeply
interdimensional. The loose and dirty power of "When I Touch You"
still surprises me every time I hear it, the most gentle yet powerful and
compelling sleazy house song I can imagine. Many of his sides are represented
here, including his experimental formless ambient side in the shape of
"Tearing the Television Sky" and the digital bonus track "The
Forbidden Creature". "The Bard's Tale" closes the EP and
balances his hypnotic dream state logic with Azerbaijani Mugham music in
something that feels like it would be equally at home on Livity Sound. Live

"La
Ritournelle" is undoubtedly Sebastien Tellier's biggest song. Since its
first release in 2003, it kept growing and circulating throughout the world
year after year like a virus. Considered by many as the ultimate love anthem
of the 21st century, the song has now infected numerous hearts and lovers,
and gained a classic status. The song is made of 7 epic minutes of a sensual
and mesmerizing piano hook, with the late afro-beat maestro Tony Allen on
drums, lush romantic strings, Philippe Zdar on the mix, and a heartbreaking
lyric at the center of the song that goes: Oh nothing's going to change my
love for you / I wanna spend my life with you So we make love on the grass
under the moon / No one call tell, damned if I do Forever journey on golden
avenues / I drift in your eyes since I love you I got that beat in my veins
for only rule / Love is to share, mine is for you Since the release, we have
received countless love messages. One from a famous DJ who told us he heard
the tune while driving on the freeway and had to stop on the side of the
road, in tears. Many couples have asked whether Tellier would perform
"La Ritournelle" at their wedding ceremony. It was sampled by The
Weeknd for the song on "Kiss Land" (2013) and used in several long
feature films. "La Ritournelle": often been copied and covered, but
rarely equaled. For the first time, Record Makers is releasing the song with
its most successful remixes on one EP, and a special gift in memory of his genius:
Tony Allen's bonus beat, the original drum track, a must have for DJs. Also
included: Gilligan Moss' mix, an atmospheric remix and a streaming hit, and
Mr Dan's Magic Wand mix, the chorus/verse version of "La
Ritournelle", basically "Unfinished Sympathy pt. II",

Boogie Woogie NOW! is een ode aan
de Victory Boogie Woogietunnel en de nieuwe verbinding die ermee ontstaat
tussen Den Haag en Rotterdam. Boogie Woogie NOW! werd bedacht door David
Schoch en het creatieve team achter cultuurpodium PIP Den Haag. Samen met
Haagse en Rotterdamse kunstenaars ontwikkelden zij een lichtinstallatie,
waarmee zij hun interpretatie van de boogiewoogie laten zien. De installatie
is van de hand van David Schoch, Jorick Mulder, Polo Vreedenburgh en Jeroen
Meijer van PIP Den Haag. Licht- en installatiekunstenaar Philip Vermeulen
voegt hier 2 van zijn werken aan toe. De muziek is speciaal gecomponeerd door
DJ's en producers Alden Tyrell en I-F, 2 kopstukken uit de elektronische
muziekscene van Den Haag en Rotterdam. Het geheel wordt ingeleid met een
poetische ode aan de Victory Boogie Woogietunnel, door Steven van Lummel,
Haagse woordkunstenaar, en Dean Bowen, tot voor kort de Rotterdamse

Originally released on CD only in 1993, the sound of the underground rose up
to the masses, showcasing a plethora of top tracks and a rising talent pool
within the Belgian electronic music scene. It was just 1 year since the birth
of the label and already the back catalogue was stuffed with club and rave
hits. The Bonzai brand soon became synonymous with banging beats and sweaty
mega-raves, and all this was thanks to a huge upsurge of talented youngsters.
The demand for the music was growing and collections such as this were a must
have. We’ve curated a choice selection of bangers from the original release,

Maroki
comes through with a 6-track serotonin boost for our Lost Palms series. With
its title meaning 'flower' in Dutch, Bloem EP sees Maroki depart somewhat
from the colder acid and electro inflections of most of his previous
releases, favouring instead a sunnier vibe and a focus on melody and texture.
'ICBT1' embodies this sugar-coated departure perfectly. High-frequency
metallic synth plucks form a dynamic melody, making up just one element of a
dense soundscape which also compiles a reverb laden cymbal break, elated
flutes and pitched-up vocal chops. The title track, together with 'Forgot
You' strips things back a little, both driven by an understated deep house
beat. 'Bloem' sees the EP at its most gentle with bubbly xylophonic tinkles
that evoke the hypnotic allure of K-Lone's 'Cape Cira' LP; whilst 'Forgot
You' gets its melody from the low ends. 'Forgot Me' is its moody older
sibling and the most minimal track of them all, showcasing the darker
underbelly to Maroki's sound with eerie underwater arpeggios and hollow
percussion. This atmosphere sticks around for 'Why': an entrancing
full-bodied breaks track sure to be closing DJ sets this Summer |
