In
mid-seventies, Nigerian bands came and went with alarming regularity, rising
meteorically from the slums to stardom and falling back again just as
quickly. Masisi Mass Funk from Anamara State was one such band. But during
their brief moment in the stratosphere, they produced a funk gem in I Want
You Girl. The band was championed by Ebere Ikoro from the Hygrades. He took
them under his wing after an ill-advised collaboration with Soly Dibong. They
were originators not imitators, he said. He produced I Want You Girl and
played on it as well. It's easy to see what appealed to Ebere Ikoro. The
title track has a Manfred Mann sixties vibe. 'Care To Love Me' is a wonky,
off-kilter reggae calypso number. And 'Ungrateful People' bounces along with
a Sly And The Family Stone chirpiness. However, it's the gospel numbers that
really stand out. 'Heavenly Father' rocks out with strident keyboards and
plaintive vocals. And the relentless 'He Is To Be Praised' is an
afro-funk-rock-gospel monster, guaranteed to raise your eyes to heaven while
keeping your feet firmly planted on the dance floor. Sadly, Masisi Mass Funk
only released one album, their star burning as quickly as it did brightly.
They went on to form First Planet, an Afro Boogie band that tore up Lagos
dancefloors in the '80s. But that's another story for another day. - Peter

After
years of gigging around the east Nigerian music scene, Foundars 15 finally
hit the jackpot when they recruited legendary bass player, Marshall Udo.
Charismatic and confident, Udo immediately energised the band, bringing a new
funky and psychedelic vibe as well as a bunch of songs he'd workshopped with
the Funkees. The tone of the album is set early. Nek Adirika's searing guitar
lick announces 'We Are On The Move', a track that is both funky and
determined. 'Co-operation' is a horn-driven slab of ghetto funk. 'Cool and
Good (For Love)' is a psychedelic wig-out. 'Work To Success' could well be
the new-look Foundars 15 manifesto set to music. While Marshall Udo was
undoubtedly the catalyst, Co-operation is very much a group effort. Udo, Sony
Enang, Nek Adirika and Ike Peters each provide songs and the musicianship of
each player is impeccable. Every track is super-tight and sophisticated. This
is the sound of a band that means business. It's also why Co-operation is
widely regarded as one of the great Afro-Funk rock albums of all time. -

BARRERA follows up the NUEVO
SONIDO BALEAR path started by ORDEN MUNDIAL, POU and PENA MAXIMA with a debut
release filled to the rim with lust, sex, power and distortion. Their songs
are slow and acid, with a tortured tone that would make GLOOM or BRAINBOMBS
cry. The seven songs on "Visiones Nocturnas" are themed around the
death of romantic love and are not afraid to look at the darkest side of life
with a nihilistic conviction. Musically the record follows the path laid by
STICKMEN WITH RAYGUNS or FLIPPER but are firmly rooted in Spanish Punk with
DESECHABLES as a clear point of reference, both aesthetically and sonically.

Street punk pioneers Charged
G.B.H. formed in Birmingham in l978, the name referencing original bassist
Sean McCarthy's trial for grievous bodily harm. The in-your-face hardcore of
EP "Leather, Bristles, Studs And Acne," paved the way for super-charged
debut LP, City Baby Attacked By Rats, which hit the number two position on
the British indie charts on release in l982, as well as the mainstream top
2O, despite being released by tiny independent, Clay Records. With a touch of
Motorhead and Sabbath beneath their straight-up hardcore, City Baby is where
the legend begins, capturing G.B.H. at their bloodiest. Limited to 500 copies
only, they all include a double sided insert and an exclusive photo licensed

Formed
in 1981 by a crew of hardcore punx and skins from Stoke/on/Trent in the
industrial Midlands of England, Asylum fully embraced the Noise Not Music'
rallying call. The missing link between Discharge and Japanese Noisecore,
their sound is characterised by detuned ear/piercing distortion> buzzsaw
guitars, fuzzed bass, charging drums and gargled vocals battle each other in
a maelstrom of lo/fi production murk that reflects the bleak outlook of their
lyrics. Only existing for a brief moment in time *playing a handful of mainly
local gigs and releasing one demo tape and the occasional track on
compilation tapes( and obscure even during their existence, Asylum were
nonetheless influential, their 1,000 M.P.H. Hardcore Punk' inspiring other
U.K. groups such as Skum Dribblurzzzz and Napalm Death. (Nic Bullen) This
release contains the 6 Track demo Is This The Price? Which was originally
released as a tape only EP on Retaliation Records. The tracks have been

älteren Songs (selbst Veröffentlichungen und auf kleinst Labels) und viele

der Zeit, dass die Welt etwas über DEGURUTIENI erfährt (ich hatte Wochen, bis
ich seinen Namen richtig buchstabieren konnte, hahaha ) Er tourt ständig
durch die ganze Welt (pre Covid-19) und tritt in regulären Konzertsälen sowie
in Theatern, Kunstgalerien oder sogar auf der Straße auf. wenn man ihn zum
ersten mal sieht ist es eine Lebens Erfahrung die man nicht wider vergisst
und es bleibt ein großes Lächeln im Gesicht und ein verzerrtes Fragezeichen
in deinem Gehirn. Alco Degurutieni wurde Ende der 60er Jahre im Nishinari
Ghetto von Osaka geboren (Alco Degurutieni: Diese Zeit in den 1970er Jahren
war eine harte Zeit für alle, einmal im Monat Unruhen auf den Straßen. Rot
Licht viertel Prostitution und die Yakuza-Mafia waren uns vertraut. Diese
Erinnerungen an ein jugendliches Chaos sind seitdem ein Katalysator für mein
Peter-Pan-Syndrom.) Degurutieni schafft Harmonie durch Gegenüberstellung,
indem er ihnen Melodie aus Chaos und Dekadenz aus Abfall extrahiert. Mit 13
Jahren bekam er seine erste Boombox und wurde der beste Kunde in seinem
örtlichen Leih-Platten und Trödler laden. Er arbeitete sich durch alle Genres
von den Beach Boys bis zum Black Sabbath. Ab 16 Jahren begann er, seine
eigenen Songs mit den einzigen Dingen zu kreieren, zu denen er Zugang hatte;
Müll, umgebaute Kinderspielzeuge und ein ausgedientes Tonbandgerät. All dies
spielt noch heute eine wichtige Rolle in seiner Musik. Auf diesem Album
findest du ,Acme in the afternoon, ein komplett Hit, Tom Waits Blues Jazz
Burlesque, dann mit ,Blur Blur Blur, hörst du ihn super minimalistisch und
verloren im All Blues, oder den unglaublichen ,Midnight Express' mit einem
orientalischen Trash-Flair der dich in einen neuen Blade Runner film
katapultiert, und Zigeuner Fanafare und Rock'n'roll in ,13th Floor City '

,Dreaming party' das wie ein psychedelischer horror film Soundtrack daher

return with another killer EP from Berlin duo New Frames - Mathis Mootz (aka
The Panacea) and David Frisch. There's no messing around in their second
release on the imprint, with the A1 track 'Clownhouse Reality' designed
pummelling bodies with it's driving 4-4 rhythms, spiky synths and perfect
techno sound design. The A2 continues this formula with 'Variation Is A
Feature Not A Flaw' - where the huge pounding drums and rolling break samples
interplay with wailing sound effects and a lively side-chained mid-range
synth in another dance-floor burner. The tempos increase on the flip with the
B1 track, 'Proton Isospace', leading the charge with its sinister melodic
stabs, rolling drum patterns, and creeping washes of mid-bass guaranteed to
get feet moving. The B2 ends the record with a massive Manni Dee remix of New
Frames modern classic 'Scatter' released on the first Sardonic Tonality
compilation back in 2019. The UK producer proves his mettle in this
re-imagining with colossal drum work, a monster rap line, and a cheeky

next Time Is Now white label sees two UKG powers join forces. The first of
these will be no stranger to loyal followers of the series: Bristol native
and Animated Audio boss Daffy makes his eagerly awaited return, one year
after his label debut which established his prowess in producing UKG with a
distinctly forward-facing essence. His collaborator PJ Bridger needs little
more introduction. A nominee for the 2021 DJ Mag Best Of British Awards,
categorised alongside Autechre, LCY and Calibre, the Berlin-based producer
has been making some serious waves over the last couple of years, with his
self-released refixes being nothing less than a staple in UKG sets across the
country. Way Back When EP gets off to a strong start. An assertive
razor-sharp two-step rhythm drives 'We Come Dere' and 'Dutty', the former
teasing elements of breaks whilst the latter leans closer towards grime. On
the flipside, 'Way Back When' is an ode to the old school with ragga vocals

controls the mind controls the body. After three years of experimentation in
isolation, Dopplereffekt have emerged with Neurotelepathy, an oracular
narrative of cerebral entanglement and advancement. The sleek mathematical
models of 2017’s Cellular Automata have evolved into these synaptic
interpretations, transferences and modifications, rejecting binary
expectations to meditate on the possibilities and pitfalls of what’s to come.
With their second LP and fifth release in total on Leisure System, the duo of
Rudolf Klorzeiger and To-Nhan have themselves achieved a near-telepathic
capacity for collaborative thought and mechanical construction. They continue
to use live appearances to present experimental trials of theoretical models,
and that effort is heard in the sizzle and swing of the percussive highlights
here, programmed with a serious depth and wriggle that reflect both an
extension of and return to form. Considerations of the machine-human
interface, neurological realities and physical probabilities dominate. But
these tracks are economical and precise, glittering with emotional depth and
cinematic effects. The album's core, a three-act movement of symphonic
uncertainty and revelation, marks one of the pair's most evocative

It’s
All Punk Dub……… There were two trains leaving the musical station back in the
late seventies. One was punk rock the other was reggae. I had a foot in both,
which we called The Punky Reggae Party. When I cut tracks for the `It’s All
Punk Rock’ album, released in October 2021, I always cut a dub / version of
the track. Some came out as the flip side of the 7’’ singles in true reggae
style and some were worked on more and changed. Some I dropped different
lyrics on top of the backing track simply because it seemed to work. All had
the bass /drums pushed up, lyrics dropped in /out when needed. I always saw
these as a different way of listening to the tracks and these seem to work

Trust
is a testament to resilience. The past two years have been tough for just
about everyone, and while it would have been easy for Catnapp to let feelings
of despair soak into her creative process, she refused to succumb to
darkness. The Berlin-based Argentinian was determined to make something
bright, energetic and uplifting, and nothing—not even a global
catastrophe—was going to stop her from rallying people to the dancefloor. Her
new LP is loaded with futuristic pop hooks, yet Trust offers so much more
than a simple sugar rush. This a record that defiantly smashes through genre
boundaries, hoovering up high-octane bits of hip-hop, R&B, rave and even
numetal along the way. Catnapp—an accomplished shapeshifter who’s never been
afraid to get weird—is just as comfortable throwing down brash rhymes as she
is singing dreamy ballads or unleashing a primal scream, and on Trust, all of
those things (and more) frequently happen within the confines of a single
song. Call it hyperpop if you must, but pop concentrate might be a more
accurate term. Modeselektor—whose similarly mischievous, genre-hopping
exploits are well documented at this point—provided creative guidance and
lent a hand in the album’s production, but they aren’t the only guests on
Trust. Catnapp’s little brother Wilo does his best Linkin Park impression
(and constructed the beat) on “Br34th3,” and fellow Argentinian Methone
cooked up the glimmering melodies of album opener “Need This.” French
trance/breakbeat/pop specialist Aamourocean contributes some technicolor
wizardry to “Stay Unsaved,” while American rapper John Debt provides a little
satire, taking on the persona of a cringeworthy music industry phony for the
hilarious skit “Skukinunu.” O.L.I.V.I.A. (another Argentinian) helps to close
out the album, seductively crooning on the Spanish-language “Despierta,” a
song where Catnapp sets aside one of her personal fears and sings in her
native tongue for the first time in years. Trust does border on overload, but
again, that’s by design. The LP arrives at a time when attention spans are
short, interruptions are constant, multi-tasking has become routine and
practically the entire history of music is now accessible at the push of the
button. Modern life is hectic, and Trust plays out accordingly, transporting
into the fractured headspace of someone who’s listening on headphones as they
go about their day. It’s a lot to take in, but thanks to Catnapp and her
multifaceted musical prowess, Trust feels more like a high-powered energy boost
than another item for the to-do list |

TRACKS. MORE D4TA, the group’s fourth album, arrives more than six years
after its predecessor (2016’s III), yet its contents are quintessentially
Moderat. Although the trio’s hiatus was absolutely real—exhausted after years
of touring, Apparat (a.k.a. Sascha Ring) and Modeselektor (a.k.a. Gernot
Bronsert and Sebastian Szary) spent two years away from one another, focusing
instead on their own respective projects—once they decided to resume working
together, the music (eventually) started flowing again. 46 MINUTES, 33
SECONDS. It wasn’t an easy process. It’s never been easy for Moderat, an
outfit who tellingly titled their debut EP Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit
(translation: At the Cost of Health) and then needed seven years to put
together a follow-up. Back in those days, the group’s members were
essentially remixing each other, but over time, they’ve gradually developed
into a proper band, writing together and developing a workflow that’s totally
distinct from their other projects. (In a band where all three members are
artists, producers and mixing engineers, striking that sort of creative
balance is trickier than it might seem.) 494 WORDS. Created largely during a
time when touring (and most traveling) was off the table, MORE D4TA is an
album that wrestles with feelings of isolation and information
overload—issues that have become particularly pronounced over the past two
years. Many of its lyrics are rooted in Ring’s frequent trips to Berlin’s
Gemäldegalerie museum (often with his infant daughter in tow), where he’d
seek refuge in the great paintings of the past while worrying about the
future. 490,6 MB. MORE D4TA is rooted in that same collaborative spirit, but
long before any of its tracks were laid down, Moderat spent months hanging
out and getting musically reacquainted, indulging in extended bouts of
experimentation and slowly fleshing out ideas as they dove into modular
composition, field recordings and other sonic oddities... |

That said, MORE D4TA is very much a Moderat album. No matter how far the band
ventures into music’s outer realms, they always wind up back in their own
unique soundworld, a place where emotive pop and fluttering electronic
soundscapes walk hand in hand. What they make isn’t necessarily dance music,
but it is something that shines brightest in the dark of night, the group’s
rich melodies and Ring’s ethereal vocals emitting a warm, almost
bioluminescent glow. MORE D4TA. Although the LP’s title is an anagram for
“Moderat 4,” there’s more to it than cheeky wordplay. In a time where
everyone is constantly bombarded with content, and taking part in the
cultural conversation requires engaging with digital platforms more
interested in harvesting data than celebrating art, it’s easy to feel
overwhelmed and disillusioned. MORE D4TA acknowledges that reality, but it
also refuses to be cowed by it. Moderat’s new album is ultimately just
another addition to the content pile—there’s no escaping that—but the trio
still yearns to create and connect. They’re not a conceptual outfit, and
never have been: After spending the better part of two decades making music
together, they’ve carved out a sound and aesthetic that are all their own,
and MORE D4TA showcases a group that’s creatively recharged and fully
dedicated to its craft. Maybe bands should take hiatuses—real ones— a little

techno legend Mark Broom returns to Rekids ahead of new album with ‘100%
Juice Album Sampler’. Following the acclaimed ‘Funfzig LP’ on Rekids in 2021
as well as his ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’ series on the techno focussed
sub-label Rekids Special Projects, UK stalwart Mark Broom returns to Radio
Slave’s Rekids with ‘100% Juice Album Sampler’, a four-track taster for his
next album titled ‘100% Juice’, scheduled to be released in April. Leading
the A-side is ‘100% Juice (Sampler Mix)’, a jacked-up take on the album’s
title track, with chunky kicks, off-kilter stabs, and crunching claps
kickstarting the record. ‘Contigo’ follows, with trippy synths providing a
dose of silliness alongside razor-sharp drums. On the flip, ‘Nod To The D’
pays homage to classic Detroit sounds, as light arpeggios and bright synths
weave their way through silky pads before closer. ‘Spiked’ sees a funk-laden
groove take charge as unruly leads flutter atop the jacking groove. Releasing
on labels such as Rekids, M-Plant, and Blueprint, the wildly prolific Broom
has consistently been at the forefront of the techno scene for decades with

time her infamous 1977 smash 'Hit & Run' goes under the knife and is
tweaked to devastating effect by 2 of Chicago's finest modern day editors -
Jamie 326 & Cratebug. Anyone with even a passing interest in Disco or
House will be more than familiar with these 2 guys names. Having edited and
remixed numerous cuts in their own original ways, they take this all-time
Salsoul classic and strip it right back to the essence, to the very basics,
and in the process create a total dancefloor weapon. This edit originally
came out a few years ago (2013) on a compilation that showcased the new wave
of contemporary talent emanating from the Windy City and naturally it was one
of the cuts that stood out, finding favour with a wide variety of DJ's across
the board from Motor City Drum Ensemble, Todd Terry, Jeremy Underground
Paris, Theo Parrish and more. Drawing comparisons with Paperclip People's
anthemic 'Throw' from 1994 in the way it snatches a killer loop from 'Hit
& Run's' bassline, 'Hit It & Quit It' is a monster, a record you'll
literally play over and over and over again, a relentless Disco juggernaut
that oozes power. It made perfect sense for this legit single-sided reissue
12" to come out on Salsoul Records, the home of Loleatta Holloway's

Vanuit
het niets, ontsproten uit hetzelfde ecosysteem dat ons eerder al zegende met
namen als NTREK en Brihang, was daar plots olsan. olsan - geen hoofdletter
vereist - is het geesteskind van rapper D. Meeuws en producer DJ SNS, twee
artiesten die de kilometers op hun teller allang niet meer hoeven te tellen.
Om het hoofd te bieden aan de chaotische tijd waarin we leven, werkten zij in
de afgelopen jaren elke maandag aan nieuw materiaal. Zonder vastomlijnd doel
op voorhand, tot de urgentie het overnam. Het losse project dat ze hadden
aangevat, bleek voor beide mannen al snel cruciaal om grip te blijven
behouden op alles wat ze om zich heen zagen gebeuren. De vraag was niet
langer of dit tot een plaat zou leiden, de vraag werd hoe snel dit zou gaan
gebeuren. Nog geen jaar later is daar dan dat debuutalbum 'millimeter',
wederom zonder hoofdletter, en het is een bijzonder solide plaat geworden. De
heerlijk tijdloze producties van DJ SNS vormen het ideale achtergronddecor
voor D. Meeuws om de balans op te maken van z'n ervaringen in zijn eerste
dertig levensjaren. De pieken, de dalen en zowat alles daar tussenin,
ongefilterd. Singles 'millimeter' en 'asjeblief' (ft. Brihang) lichtten al
een tipje op van de sluier, maar de andere nummers van deze plaat doen daar
allesbehalve voor onder. De plaat werd gemixt door Tobie Speleman en
gemasterd door Jeffrey De Gans. De vinyl, ontworpen door Fabrice Parent, is
een erg mooie uitgave op 300 exemplaren, die zich qua afwerking onderscheidt
door het reliëf en de papieren feel van de outer sleeve, maar ook door het
strategisch verstopte gedicht aan de binnenkant. De fysieke release staat
gepland op vrijdag 10 juni |

Hot
on the heels of his full-length LP 'Sky Scraping', Luke Slater is back as
Planetary Assault Systems with a victory lap titled 'Devotion'. A trailblazer
in techno with anticipation ahead of every release, Slater appoints
complementary scene heavy weights Truncate and Barker for the remixes. With
the title track being reissued after its primary release on 'Sky Scraping',
'Devotion' opens the EP with what can only be described as raw drum machine
psychosis. Slater whips up a classic tom-based 909 sequence with impact,
keeping things straight to the point before introducing the defining vocal
sample. Wasting no time with 1 bar melodies, Slater boosts up the resonance
and LFO rates to create hypnotic textures with a large stereo spread to
affirm the sheer size of the track. It comes as no surprise that 'Devotion'
was picked up by Los Angeles's Truncate for the remix. Truncate employs the
head-turning efficiency that's made his name a stylistic reference for the
past 10 years for this remix, making the vocal cut seem like his idea to
begin with. Stripping down the track to its bare essentials and emphasizing
the rumble of the kick that clears the way for his original groove, Truncate
surprises the listener with a progression into a more maximalist record than
his fans might be used to. This marks a fair compromise with Slater's
original track and makes for a reliable weapon for clubs everywhere. Slater
then offers 'Eden Tide' as his B1 for this record, introducing a track
independent of the LP. Here, Planetary Assault Systems fans find comfort in
the cosmic synth lines and ambience that justify his name. This glides over a
reliable groove with shaker-like hi-hats he's been known to use in the past
coupled with an identifying progressive structure to make things even more
hypnotic, making the track a recipe for acclaim. 'Eden Tide' could only be
strengthened with a remix from Berghain resident Barker, who takes things
even further into the mind with his signature kickless techno. Always picking
up on the details, Barker takes advantage of the space given by Slater to
offer his rendition of 'Eden Tide'. Barker lifts the mood with melody and
dives into the subconscious through dub with delays and psychedelic movement,
introducing the end of the EP with a meditative eye closer to smooth the
edges of a rougher record |

music company based in Madrid and established in 2021 by Thomas Moulin. The
record label is a platform that promotes up-and-coming music artists, without

There’s
a storm coming, and it is here to stay. “HURRICANA” comes as a breath of
fresh air for A MURDER IN MISSISSIPPI’s rousing melodies. February, 2020. One
could call it the calm before the storm with the events that would follow
later that year, were it not for the unusually heavy European storms Ciara
and Dennis already thoroughly shaking the doors of the Barefoot Recording

Murder in Mississippi finetunes the dialogue between the banjo and violin. On
the “HURRICANA” album, the band based around siblings Leander and Mirthe
Vandereecken reviews the turbulent events and challenges of the past years.
The songs tell stories of personal loss, addiction, anxiety and misfortune,
while also exploring ways to cope with the above through connection and hope.
Covid-19 delayed the recording of the album, but also offered a chance to
create more depth. Ideas were allowed to linger long enough to ripen, so that
the tracks could be improved and polished during a hopeful spring- and
summertime. The result is a versatile blend of Americana, Bluegrass, Folk and
Blues with instant feel good songs, ballads to warm the heart and Dark
Country-lamentos that send shivers across your spine. “As soon as you start

& Obscure Shape offer up their first EP on new imprint Mutual Rytm as
they drop five fresh and expansive techno cuts across their 'Poetic Justice'
EP. A duo that has ascended to become leading names within today's techno
landscape, SHDW & Obscure Shape continue to grow and evolve while shaping
their own unique sound fusing classic influences with a modern touch. Their
latest project saw the birth of Mutual Rytm - a new imprint launched in early
2022 set to showcase a deep dive into the duo's musical roots via their own
productions alongside material from the label's close family of likeminded
artists. Following the label's opening multi-artist VA and the first solo EP
from Berlin's Lars Huismann, June welcomes the first solo instalment from the
label founders themselves as they ready a killer five-tracker set to make an
impact. A1 'Turbulence' sets the pace as the duo delve into nimble rhythms
which ebb and flow effortlessly to reveal a hypnotic slice of modern techno
permeated with classic, old school cues, while 'Pulse' takes up a darker
aesthetic, keeping the energy high as metallic drum licks guide driving
sub-bass and resonant stabs. On the Bside, title cut 'Poetic Justice'
balances warping vocals with swinging percs amongst a layered, drum-laden
kinetic workout, exemplifying the duo's drive for combining and contrasting
various shades of techno. Next up, 'Set It Off' welcomes the introduction of
expansive melodies to offer an entrancing late-night cut, before turning to
the unhurried grooves, salient hats and sweeping atmospherics of 'Killing Me
Softly'. Digital bonus 'Before Sunset' once again delves into lighter, breezy
territories while keeping the classic rolling techno touches throughout,
shaping up the package with a powerful yet agile closing production. SHDW

unique and sexy sound that just feels expensive. The Melbourne-based artist
has built a large following with poppy earworms and pounding house, and now
joins Shall Not Fade's Classic Cuts series for a full EP of hits. james2007EP
starts with the anthemic "It's Not You, It's Me"; pairing the
rumble of jungle breaks with melancholic, airbrushed vocals that show their
SOPHIE influence, it's an eye catching opener. "My Purple iPod
Nano" has a sound palette which will transport you straight back to a
00s club night, teasing a climax that stays just out of reach with pumping
synth stabs and a kick drum that packs a punch. On the B-side, "Orange Tesla"
is a high-pressure roller that centers a pacey melody - sure to be a 3am
dancefloor energiser. The record closer, "I Dunno Her", brings back
the emotive edge with spaced out pads and glittery little ear candy moments
overarching the still-racing beat. Ballad-like vocals that are barely
perceptible add depth. This EP showcases jjj's talent for catchy and clever
hybrid music, which is sure to make him one to watch |
