Quality
techno from this Dutch Techno Don! A stalwart of the Dutch techno scene since
the mid nineties, Jeroen Schrijvershof has been ploughing his own furrow
aside from the typical norms and standards of the techno scene with lasting
integrity and unflinching dedication throughout the years. A coinage derived
from the sharp, clinically designed blends he has come to be known for, that
Search-sound has long established as a blueprint for DJs seeking laser-guided
weaponry into their sets, and Jeroen's maiden effort for RYC follows that
very guideline. Starting with the massive pound of the title-track,
"Enigma", the EP knocks into your system with blunt force, ushering
us into a no-frills corridor of hydraulic kicks and sizzling static. As per
usual with Jeroen's compositions, minimalism serves a purpose of exponential
effect. True to the fuel-efficient philosophy of the producer,
"Modules" harnesses a controlled avalanche of modular signals and
no-prisoner, big-room techno dynamics to forge a piece of exquisitely raw
rave material that can move blocks of concrete with its nose. Letting the
groove a little bit looser, "Object of Ridicule" spins at fierce
tempo whilst relying on the same limited palette of chiselled drums and
ominous strings to plunge the dance floor into a darker, neo-noir paradox of
rhythmic straightforwardness and mystery-shrouded ambiguity. Topping the
release off is "Circle Park", a cut that further exposes Jeroen's
constant juggling between atmospheric opacity and a surgical, technicist
approach towards production. A matter of thoroughly finessed textures and
obsession for the faintest detail that shines through "Enigma" with
unrelenting ebullience. More than anything the fruit of an endless search for
fresh, unheard forms of transcending techno expression. In reflection to the
release's outstanding character, we decided to have it pressed to 180g
audiophile vinyl so y'all purists can revel in Enigma's heavily detailed
sound spectrum |

Calling
all students of late 70s Nigerian Boogie. Class is in and you're about to get
schooled by music professor Josephine Mokwunyei, aka Joe Moks. Spotted by
legendary producer, Odion Iruoje, and nurtured by his protege, Alex Tony
Okoroji, Joe Moks pioneered a wonky, hi-tech style of funk that would become
the sound of 80s Nigeria. Her album Boys And Girls is brash, bouncy and fun,
decorated by scatty synth lines and propelled by the 'magic hand claps' of
Nigerian rhythm legends Steve Black, Goddy Igidigi and Ifi Okwechime. The
title track and 'You Look Without Seeing' are spaced-out party starters.
'Closer Than Skin' boasts a super slinky bass line and 'Love Is Gonna Pay' is
a slice of Bony M Euro pop. And, just beneath the froth, strong intelligent
lyrics demanding respect and equality. 'Being In Love Is Being Involved' was
the blueprint of new kind of relationship Nigerian women were looking for.
Joe Moks only made one album. She made a few appearances on Victor Uwaifo's
TV show before becoming a professor of Music and Theatre Arts at the
University of Benin. But forty years on, Boys And Girls remains a lesson in

4-Skins is the debut LP - originally released on Secret Records in 1982 -
from East End Oi! legends The 4-Skins. Recorded with the first stable line-up
after mumerous changes, fronted by legendary vocalist Panther (who stepped in
after the original singer Gary Hodges' defection), this is violent,
political, and as real as Oi! gets, this is one of the absolute classic LPs
of the genre. Featuring studio recordings on Side A and amped up live
versions of such OI! classics as "A.C.A.B" or "Chaos" on
Side B, the album remains a coherent punk masterwork, which also happens to
include - in the first song of the LP, lastic Gangsters' - one of the best
British 2-tone ska tracks of all-time, composed and sung by 4 Skins' original
drummer Gary Hitchcock. A classic LP reissued for a new generation of skins

After
the well-earned Adarra prize awarded by San Sebastián city council in 2021,
the name of Amaia Zubiria is back on people's lips, one of the most
outstandingly beautiful voices in the history of folk and Basque music in
general. In fact, thanks to the albums recorded with Haizea and with Txomin
Artola and many other collaborations, she has been a constant presence in a
long, fruitful career spanning over 40 years. However, despite this
popularity, much of her extensive body of work is unknown or remains almost
forgotten, apart from four or five records and her most popular songs. This
is a shame, because her forgotten back catalogue contains many of Amaia's
most moving songs. Among them, as a taster and an invitation to get into her
music, we encourage you to listen to the enchanting "Itxasoan laino
dago", recorded together with Pascal Gaigne in 1985. A track featuring
the electronic sounds created with great care by Pascal and adorned by Michel
Doneda's saxophone and guided with a magical sophistication by the talented
sound engineer from Hendaye, Jean Phocas. It is an impossibly beautiful melt
of avant garde and traditional music |

No
global pandemic can dull the drive of musicians to create. At the onset of
the Covid-19 crisis artists everywhere found themselves pondering what music
making looks like under quarantine. In the absence of touring and in-person
recording, New York based Colemine label mates Ben Pirani and Ghost Funk
Orchestra prove the spirit of collaboration can flourish under social
distancing with the help of file sharing. And so the idea to exchange remixes
of existing material revealed itself. Each musician recording their parts
from home and zapping them across the city to be assembled. Modern Scene from
Ghost Funk Orchestra's 2019 LP A Song For Paul is reimagined top to bottom by
Pirani as psychedelic soul jazz with baroque flourish. 4 bars of lonesome
guitar give way to a solitary sax building with lush strings before laying
way back to give room to the original vocal. A fried guitar solo follows
before a spectral drum machine arrives to support the slow crescendo with
layers upon layers of instruments that all at once disappear before the
listener knows what they are listening to. Seth Applebaum tapped several
dozen musicians to assemble his Ghost Funk Quarantine Orchestra. Applebaum's
arrangement of Can't Get Out Your Own Way from Ben Pirani's 2018 Colemine LP
How Do I Talk To My Brother draws on alternative harmonic dimensions via
instrumentation not typically associated with Soul music. Swirling strings,
bold brass punchy piano and even tuba punctuate Pirani's snarling vocal. The
overall effect it that of a large ensemble playing in one place. Wishful

Blitz spun off from British blues-rock act Bakerloo, but after founding

Wrecks is proud to present Luca Lozano's 4th album, a collection of both
previously unreleased and brand new material. Recorded between the years of
2015 and 2022 and in the locations of various studios in Berlin and
Sheffield, 'Man Of Science' collates some of the producers most accomplished
and interesting work to date. Choosing to release an album on CD in the
current climate of vinyl-fetishistic domination may seem a risky move but
longtime followers will know Mr. Lozano was never one to follow trends
blindly and chooses to plough his own path whilst the world patiently waits
in line for their turn. The title track from the album opens with sampled
words from astrophysicist and planetry scientist Neil Degrasse Tyson and
hints at the overarching theme of the album, in an increasingly polarised
world Luca Lozano plants his flag firmly in the moondust and stands by his
belief solarsystem. 'Man Of Science' opens with 'End of Line 2' a follow up
to the original track released on Super Rhythm Trax in 2015. The slow stomp
of breakbeats and alien rhythms stride alongside complex layers of
Kawai-strings and haunting FX, resulting in a trademark styling of a Lozano
track that refuses to be categorised. Elsewhere the stubborn bounce of
'Celestrial Being' fuses a House feeling with a retro rave aesthetic,
culminating in a beautifully orchestrated crescendo that is sure to
illuminate the moodiest of listeners. Tracks like 'Prognosis' show off
Lozano's flair and interest in early Progressive House, an irresistably
functional groove pair with pianos and stabs Gat Decor would proud of. The
album rounds of with the bonus track 'VIP', which features a sample taken
from the Spike Jonze produced documentary 'Whats Up, Fatlip? and is a perfect
example of the type of track that lies hidden in one of Lozano's many
forgotten hard drives. Defiantly imperfect and with a tongue firmly lodged in
cheek, the track gives a glimpse into the producers relentless worth ethic
and also a sneak peek into the mountain of music that possibly lies
unreleased. The 10 track CD album comes complete with obi-strip and fold out
poster and is limited to 500 copies |

After
two groundbreaking and successful albums in the early 2000s, musical
mastermind Tim Vanhamel shifted his focus to a more intimate solo record and
a string of side projects, including Broken Glass Heroes (with Pascal
Deweze), Eat Lions, The Hickey Underworld en Tom Barman's Magnus. He ended up
with his first love Millionaire in 2017 though, after a twelve-year hiatus.
Out of nowhere, he released the magnum opus 'Sciencing' in 2017, getting rave
reviews all over the place and putting Millionaire back on the map. The band
kicked off a sold-out release tour on Best Kept Secret Festival in the summer
of '17. Three years later, Vanhamel is back with a new record. We leave it up
to him to introduce you to the thrilling new album APPLZ NOT APPLZ, due March
6 on Unday Records: Dearest, I am honoured and proud to present to you
"APPLZ NOT APPLZ" (pronounced apples not apples), the brother to my
previous album "SCIENCING". "Sciencing" was female,
"APPLZ NOT APPLZ" is male, they are brother and sister, and turned
out to be related in more ways than I could've imagined. If
"Sciencing" was the mother, giving birth and taking care of her
babies, then "APPLZ NOT APPLZ" is the father, going out for the
hunt and taking care of the family and the planet. The record practically
wrote itself and expressed a sound that felt reflective of these crazy times.
Crazy times that have always been and probably always will be. I love albums
like "There's a riot going on" by Sly & the Family Stone,
"What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye, anything by Curtis Mayfield,
Public Enemy, Jimi Hendrix... If this album shares even the slightest hint of
those great contemporary "political" albums, I am a happy man.
Consider this a tribute to those kinds of records, with a tongue in cheek nod
and celebratory flavour. I always stayed away from politics because I feel it
is an unnecessary evil existing only through man's incapability to love
himself. A wise man once said: "One has as great a chance of meeting a
politician who loves himself, as of being hit by a comet. Never trust people
who don't love themselves, especially if they have to take care of their own
people." Politics were born the very moment the apple got bitten and
that's what this album is about. We are 7000000000 apples trying to get along
on one big apple and if sometimes, we could just get a little bit out of our
own way, it would be one tasty yummy fresh golden apple. Now, please forget
every word I wrote, they are all absolutely irrelevant, just put on your
dancing shoes and boogie your ass down to the ground like this moment is the

QUINTET were originally formed for an afterparty celebrating the New York
City premiere of AMPHETAMINE REPTILE documentary THE COLOR OF NOISE. "It
was obvious I must assemble a supergroup of the finest noise rockers New York
City had to offer . . ." says Spasm. First choice was basher
extraordinaire "BLOODY" RICH HUTCHINS, veteran of such explosive
musical exports as LIVE SKULL, OF CABBAGES AND KINGS and RUIN. Next, SKELETON
BOY of WOMAN was recruited. "Who, just as LEADBELLY was the King Of The
Twelve-String Guitar, is himself The King Of The Two-String Bass." Then
came the twang, with the addition of suave slinger ANDREA SICCO of TWIN GUNS.
"When our guitars merge, it forms a most piquant aural melange." In
a nod to the latter half of his birth name, STU SPASM now became ART GRAY,
and an entirely new mess was born. THE ART GRAY NOIZZ QUINTET have recently
been witnessed onstage opening for kindred spirits such as THE SCIENTISTS and
MUDHONEY, and 2019 saw them survive a successful tour of the West Coast.
Catching the eye of No Wave Queen LYDIA LUNCH led to teaming up for a
collaborative musical effort, and sharing a few stages including bookending
tha pandemic, with one of the last shows of 2020 NYC before lockdown hit, and
a triumphant return to the boards in July 2021 |
