Cafe
de la Jungle returns with Tuvan Spirits EP for Dans de la Desert, exploring
further his fascination with shamanic practices in highly dynamic sound
environments. While his excellent debut Dancing with Cicadas was rife with
dangerous and mysterious rhythms, the Krakow-based producer takes a more laid
back approach this time. Built around cavernous ambiance and bass notes
played with such grace they paint a picture of a dance ritual so subtle, it's
visceral and highly narrative at the same time. While the bass ballet of
"Kus" opens the record in a beautiful and stoic way, its followup
-the percussive "Chas"- takes on a playful approach as it's
juxtaposing throat singing samples with jaw harp-like one off sounds bouncing
off skittery beats. "Kysh" on the other hand puts Zajac's mastery
of modular sculpting to such a high that you might change your opinion about
Italians being the masters of dubby, ambient techno you can drown in. To top
off the EP in a spectacular way, Cafe de la Jungle invited Toulous Low Trax
who turned "Kysh" into his trademark mechanical style, achieving a
fascinating combination of off-kilter clockwork precision and long forgotten

"The
making of this album first started as a recollection of music and sound
design I've produced over the last couple of years for events and
installations - interactive and immersive AV experiences. It was like
creating a specific atmosphere for visitors where I'd take them into this
sensorial but artificial experience within a very confined spatial domain.
This is how the "Climats" concept emerged. Longer ambient and
generative pieces thus found their own space in my repertoire, allowing me to
explore more in-depth, non-linear execution with soft, moody and padded
textures. Eventually, all this freeform material became available so I could
extract parts of it to build more club-centered and straightforward tracks,
but nonetheless, the list grew and all this softer-edged, more introspective
works were aggregating over time. At the time of the lockdown, it felt very
natural to get back to it and finalize it as a cohesive whole. It was a very
healing and a smooth process to work on these. From isolation, I could open
this window to thoughts where I made up my very own Science Fiction story
while working on the music. I really wanted it to be a one-hour soundtrack
experience that I'd listen at home or driving while my mind would travel across
all those musical scapes. It was never a formalized script, but the music
spoke for itself with themes of anticipation, collapse, utopia, the world as
we know it, the near and far future... Creating the album was quite a
sporadic production process that stretched over several years but it all came
together and made a lot of sense in the context of the title I chose :
TERRAFORM. The narrative of the album simply unfolds from Dawn to Dusk, and
the listener navigates through the different climates that each track

Romanian
record label, feeder sound, proceeds with its fifth pressing in the
catalogue, this time inviting local duo Unisson to showcase their latest
productions. Titled “Neverending Story EP”, the material provides a robust
minimal sound, carefully crafted with intricate breakbeat rhythms,
introspective textures and electric effects that sweep through the
frequencies with style. The artwork for the vinyl features SANDi’s painting
created alongside the duo’s performance on one of feeder sound’s LIVE sessions,
an event that also acted as the online vernissage for the Street Art
București exhibition. Unisson are widely known for their releases with
Raw Crafted Wax, Mulen, miNIMMAl movement and their own UNS Records. It is
definitely a pleasure to see them joining the roster at feeder sound, where
Dragutesku, Piktor, Oana and Bucurie have signed the previous EPs. “Following
the main idea of our favorite motto “Delivering vibes”, the record is built
around contrasting moods. A side providing some trippy new sounds, while B
side containing two old school beats with breaks influences” - Unisson
“Neverending” opens Side A with a twisted groove designed with reverberated
drumming patterns, a wobbling bassline and hypnotic arpeggios that blend into
an organic flow that’s smoothly complemented by warm background pads and
subtly glitched layers. Following, “If I was a drummer” switches gears to a
rather different sound, revealing a deeper composition that draws influences
from jazz and funk for the percussion, bringing an engaging broken beat to
the table along with inspiring minimalistic themes and arrangements. On Side
B, the journey sets off with “City Zen”, a rather downtempo-oriented cut
infused with eerie vocal samples and lush atmospheric textures and chords.
The progressive evolution seems perfect for the afterhours as well as for
laid-back afternoon selections. Closing the EP, “Hemp Made” returns to a more
uplifting tempo, laying out a spiraling breakbeat that leads echoing
complementary elements and eerie synth work into a complex and steady-paced
dancefloor weapon |

Continuing
to shine a light on John Rocca & co.'s pioneering early 80s music, Far
Out proudly presents the first ever 12” release of Freeez’s monster brit-funk
classic “Mariposa”, along with the equally heavy and hard to find 12” mix of
“Alone”. The limited Mariposa/Alone 12” release follows Far Out’s reissues of
Freeez’s first two 12” single releases “Keep In Touch” and “Stay/ Hot Footing
it”, which saw support from Kenny Dope, Greg Wilson, Gilles Peterson, Shuya
Okino and Harvey Sutherland. Slightly more refined, but no less groovy and
mysterious, “Mariposa” and “Alone” are the pinnacle of the sound Rocca and
Peter Maas began developing in an East London basement in the early 80s.
Released on Freeez’s debut album Southern Freeez in 1980, “Mariposa '' is
fearsomely funky, high-tempo, melodic jazz-funk featuring Paul Morgan’s
lighting drum fills, Peter Maas’s slapping and popping, Andy Stennett’s
top-drawer keys and John Rocca’s percussion and otherworldly Spanish vocals.
Pure dance-floor body music, “Mariposa” typified the group’s feel-good sound
and has torn up club floors throughout the 80s and beyond. With the same core
line-up, with the exception of new drummer; Light Of The World’s Everton
McCalla, ”Alone”, originally released as the B-side to Freeez’s “One to One”
single in 1982, is a cool, heady boogie stepper, and this elusive extended
12” mix is a no brainer for any discerning jazz/funk boogie jock. In the
mid-80s Rocca would go onto craft underground cult classics like ‘Melodies of
Love’ and ‘India’ as Pink Rhythm, before foraying into the world of electro,
collaborating with legendary US producer Arthur Baker. Limited to 1000 units
worldwide, Freeez’s Mariposa/Alone will be released by Far Out Recordings on
12” vinyl on the 16th September 2022 |

For
the next instalment in our split series, we handed the reins over to two
producers whose work has kept us continually inspired over the last few
years. At the helm of the A-side, Berlin big-room havoc-wreaker AMOTIK puts
on the burners right away with two riotous jams that scream nothing but sonic
aggression. On the flip, the mysterious, genre-unbound Janice sweeps us into
his psychedelic, non-formulaic techno mindset. True to AMOTIK's minutely
balanced, well-integrated blends of punishing kick drums and sunken
harmonics, metronomic destroyer "Narangi" swings the pendulum sharp
and clean, from deep down a thick sludge of reverb-soaked, FX-topped
percussive armada to bleeps n' bloops barrage fire, whereas quake-inducing
tides of 909 thunder hail down upon the dance floor with unrelenting frenzy.
The dusty bone-bruiser "Hara" picks up the torch and it's in no
calmer mood. A slowed-down, breaks-loaded churner, this one relies on a fine
engineering of lo-freq moves and pure hardware-processed filth to establish a
murky motel, cinematic narrative of sorts. Up with the fracturing wares,
here's Janice rocking the flip upside down with the aptly-titled "Mass
Formation Hypnosis". Doing what's written on the tin, the faceless producer
rushes us headfirst into the boiler for a thorough, unfaltering brainwash.
Smelling of leather, grease and coal, this one's bristling with a delectably
rugged palette of unambiguous electronics: an ultimate shelling of
chest-rattling drum work, in-your-face bass uppercuts, trumpeting stabs and
menacingly altered vox. The final salvo, "Names and Excuses", tops
it all off on an ominously droney tip, flinging us right away into the
frothing mouth of a deadly machine giant, hurtling and tumbling down mazy
bowels of washed-out ambient techno via rhyzomatic gutters of brooding
abstract motifs and no-frills heavyweight pound. Hectic. ''XVII'' comes
adorned with a duly outstanding frame to shine, and will be pressed on 180g
audiophile quality vinyl. Once again a way for RYC to openly declare its
aspirations and goals, in letting people know that quality, passion and love
for the music is all that matters |

honcho Nuno had been playing a demo of Tools for Fools by Dutch producer
Sluwe Vos for years, when he found out the energetic rhythm track never got a
proper release. Well, now it has. Flip over for some more forgotten Dutch
house history. Jibaros is a project from dance veteran Eric Cycle. It has all
the elements that made house music from the lowlands so good in those days: percussive
beats, a decent baseline and good melodies sprinkled on top. It's a layercake
of sweet stuff that just keeps on building. Very pricey on Discogs nowadays,
but luckily Cycle still had the original DAT-tape lying around. Nozem is a
bit of the odd one out. It's actually a project by a young dude from the
south of Holland but it sounds like he stepped into a time machine which
warped him back to the 90s. The vocals (in ancient Greek!) are from Sister of
Iris. Closure track Tinkling Sensation by Delta (Alex Dijksterhuis) is more
than 25 years old. With it's fast-paced rhythms this piano driven tune could
well be something post-progressive from Scandinavia. But this is the real

Without Hands' unfurls as a journey through fatherhood, change and loss.
After Sonny Ism learnt that he was to become a father, he began recording the
album with a new found post Covid inspiration. The writing process quickly
kicked into gear with tracks like 'This Time' and 'Visions of Melbourne'
coming to life; pseudo peaks into the future and notions of moving back to
Australia after living in Scandinavia for the last 7 years. Accompanied by
the rowdy and tapey deep house nodds of 'Aries Door' 'Cbd Nights' and
'Obscura', the album breaks into the soothing ambient calm of 'Clock Without
Hands' and 'Solastalgia' - a musical commentary on negatively perceived
environmental change. Tragically, in March 2022, Sonny Ism and his wife lost
their daughter Astrid at 22 weeks to stillbirth. 'Cant Remember Forgetting
You' paints the agony and grief of pregnancy loss and explores the complex
and antiquated way in which society processes it. 'Clock Without Hands' is
named, inspired and dedicated to his daughter Astrid as a collection of work
frozen in time, a musical dear diary from the little time he shared with her |

support from Charlotte De Witte. Push presents Retro Active heads up our next
vinyl release with the four-track techno monster, Blacked Out. The main man
is relentless in his pursuits, churning out top-notch grooves, sending the
crowds into a frenzy. Mostly known for his trancey exploits, Push is no
stranger to techno, some of his very first releases were full blown techno
efforts before he branched out to other genres. Retro Active focusses on all
things big and bold in the techno arena, with a classic twist. Always a
pleasure having his on Bonzai. First up in the A1 slot, Blacked Out intros
with a monstrous, pounding kick drum and slicing hi hat combo. An underlying
bass rumbles through the groove as techy, rave synth stabs and infectious
rising sirens come through. The track breaks to reveal a subtle 303 line
which transforms into a gnarly acid riff, ushering in a massive climax that
will dominate the floors no doubt. A2 hosts the equally full-on Dusk Till
Darkness, which delivers a mesmerizing experience. The bass drum, with its
trailing bass tones is powerful and forces you to move as rhythmic elements
fade in. An almost industrial level is reached with metallic sounds
dominating, making this a must have for the big arenas. On the flip, in B1 we
have, Hands Alert which sets the tone with another huge kick drum and bright
hi hat combination. A solid, rhythmic track, thanks to an array of perfectly
arrangement percussions and drums, the groove soon bursts into a climactic
rave goliath. Classic sounds litter the sound as retro 303 lines converge to
create a chugging groove. An absolute stomper that is not to be missed. In
B2, Dark Motion closes out the 12” with an all-encompassing banger of a tune.
Heavy duty kick drums power the track as stuttering hats cut through the
murk. A dark, sinister vibe emerges as gnarly pads fade in alongside frantic
arpeggios. A scathing 303 line erupts on the break before the drums kick back
in for the final act, sending the dancefloor into a frenzy. Top-notch stuff |

Welcome to the re-release of City State, Someguy Records’ debut
EP, which upon its release in 2021, caused quite a stir amongst leftfield
house aficionados. The “classy atmospheric house deepness” (to quote Hardwax)
easily found its way into the record bags of Roger 23 (Ilian Tape, Playhouse,
…), Even Tuell and Lowtec (Workshop Records), Mary Yalex (Kann, Dial) and
many more. The record was hailed by online magazines such as Ransom Note as
highly hypnotic lo-fi electronica, that draws in the attention of the
listener to not let go again. Others, such as Beat Burguer, loved the way the
record works as a whole, from the intro of Quiet Cool, to the finishing
avant-garde electro of Different Fountains’ (Meakusma) remix of City State.

Prostitune doesn’t really need an
introduction. The Swedish producer has a glorious past with releases on
Kompakt and Just Another Beat. As Prostitune, he mixes warm soundscapes with
organic beats, thus creating a rather unique blend of both highly danceable
and listenable tracks. It must be said that he outdid himself with this
record, mixing dancefloor bombs (“IDA OH”!, “Cailyn’s Hymn”) with soundtracky
interludes. But the true winner of the record is the B1, “30th Street 1969”,
which has been described as somewhat of a modern classic. With its wavy
basslines, its organic drum rolls and its luscious instrumentation, it soon
became a summer favourite amongst deejays around the globe. (Max D!,

After
a more than convincing debut on Token with his contribution to 2020's Fuga II
compilation, Deniro returns with a 4-part sonic manifesto entitled 'Saola'.
With each track name referring to either a highly endangered or extinct wild
animal, Deniro offers analog efficiency denoting various ecospheres through
minimalist composition. Linear in form yet immersive in effect, Saola guides
the listener from lucity into spacious abyss. Initiating the EP with the
title track, 'Saola' confronts with what can almost be perceived as a hastily
played piano. The A1 provides nail-biting dissonance to kick things off with
hypnotic delay, gripping the listener until the very end with consistent
progression through a simplistic albeit powerful percussion line. Deniro then
picks up the pace and shines things up with a brightly stabbed synth and 16th
hats to roll us through the highly efficacious followup, 'Vaquita'. Even more
explosive than its predecessor, Deniro uses 'Vaquita' to show tense restraint
in his arrangement that's complemented by his pressing lead sequence. The
record is then flipped to reveal a B side that takes off as soon as the
needle hits the wax. 'Gharial' begins explosively full-on, throwing the
listener into a vicious pursuit soundtracked by a fleetingly polyrhythmic
arpeggio. The energy is underlined by rolling snares and toms to expand the
width of the EP before arriving into the final excursion through the record's
most introspective piece. High pitched plucks like stars brush along a song
that inspires discovery. Whirlpooling white-noise in the far stereo field
gives deep ambience to 'Baiji', offering an ethereal conclusion to an
suspenseful adventure |

the time Ghetto Man Skank appeared on Jah Thomas' Midnight Rock imprint in
1983, Ranking Toyan was already a seasoned veteran of Kingston's soundclash
scene, having apprenticed with a number of smaller outfits before becoming
earning a slot with Henry "Junjo" Lawes' Volcano Sound and winning
widespread acclaim for his effortless, patois-laden delivery and his gruff
putdowns of rival DJs. Though Toyan had already cut a number of outstanding
sides for producer Don Mais, his collaborations with Lawes are undoubtedly
his definitive recordings. Ghetto Man Skank stands as the very best of these.
It boasts a set of simple, punishingly hard rhythms from the ace studio band
The Roots Radics, which Toyan dominates with ease. His ability to spill forth
unending streams of wordplay, streetcorner boasts, and infectious slogans is
truly remarkable, enlivening every song on this set. Though Toyan didn't
receive the same acclaim as fellow Volcano Sound DJs like Yellowman and
Eek-A-Mouse, his outstanding performances on Ghetto Man Skank prove he was
their equal in every respect |

Saccharine Trust is a
post-hardcore band from California that was started in 1980 by singer Jack
Brewer and guitarist Joe Baiza. The band would frequently perform with SST
labelmates Minutemen and Black Flag. Drummer Rob Holzman appeared on their
1981 debut Paganicons but left the band to play in Slovenly, replaced by
drummer Tony Cicero. After a ten-year hiatus, the band re-formed and began
performing around the West Coast. In his journals, Kurt Cobain considered
Paganicons to be one of his Top 50 favorite albums. Buzz Osborne of The
Melvins stated in the book Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of
Grunge that they were hugely influential in terms of atmosphere. Sonic Youth
covered their song "I Am Right" on the SST compilation The Melting
