The
Hague based producer ''Deniro'' is responsible for the 3rd installment in the
''Oblique Music'' series. This time around the 12'' consists of 4 club cuts
that all showcase a different ambiance throughout. Label owner Ben Buitendijk
is carefully curating the sound for his recently established imprint and
Deniro's (extinct) Penguin inspired package definitely matches with the
label's previous escapades. ''Kairaku 1'' is a dubbed out whirlwind which
uses emotive drum patterns and hazy reverbs that blend together in the most
perfect way and cause for a inspiring atmosphere to occur instantly.
''Kairaku 2'' is a more classic sounding cut which maintains originality
through ''Deniro's'' signature drum patterns and the constantly changing
chords that make this effort one of the more special ones. The B side opens
up with ''Kairaku 3''. This is again a dubbed out cut that is drenched with
percussive sounds that would suit perfect in the more adventurous settings.
''Kairaku 4'' is filled with interesting textures and progresses in a minor
but riveting way |

Formed in the anonymous town of
Watford, northwest of London, in 1980, atmospheric quintet Sad Lovers and

is proud to invite Berlin-based Canadian artist Ryan James Ford for his
second appearance on the label, this time with a full 5-track EP of dark
tripped out dance floor weaponry following from their track on the second
Sardonic Tonality compilation as well as his huge album on Clone in 2021 and
an EP on Mama Told Ya earlier this year. The A1 launches with 'Lost In The
L.E.S.' with its threatening synth rising and falling alongside quick vocal
chops and rolling drum rhythms providing the perfect start to this collection
showcasing the murkier side of Ryan's production. The A2 continues on this
tip with 'Ekstase' - where distorted percussions and a cheeky scream sample
bounce off the sombre synthesiser programming in another slab of quirky 4-4
experimentation. The A3 closes the first side with 'Undertow (S02E05)', a
certified club banger making fine use of distorted kicks, bouncy rhythmic
work and dub-style synth stabs in another unique brain twister. On the flip
the B1 keeps things rolling with 'The Promise Of Money' - another peculiar
workout full of experimental textures, dusky synth melodies and charging
drums to keep feet moving. The B2 closes the record with 'Parllyster (92
Mix)', which takes a brighter turn with its euphoric melody and gravely bass
alongside punchy broken rhythms that quickly turn in to pounding
four-to-the-floor in this club-heavy offering from the Canadian producer |

Hackney
native Eliza Rose has learned everything she knows from her local soundscape.
Growing up on the 2-step and 4x4 rhythms of UK Garage (citing the sounds of
Lovestation's Teardrops and B-15's Girls Like Us as her first true garage
experience) and spending her spare time listening to artists such as Billie
Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz and soul associated artists has
provided the platform for one of London's leading lights to truly shine -
whether it be through house, garage, mo-town, soul or funk - seamlessly
blending eras and sounds together through retro-modern vocals and productions
on her own Rosebud Recordings. There couldn't be a more fitting artist to
celebrate Lobster Theremin's milestone 100th release with, having been a part
of the Lobster family for some time now through a long-standing friendship
and record shop & label responsibilities, and alongside emerging label
affiliate M4A4 the pair deliver 4 killer cuts of 2-step, house-garage and
jungle fitting of the moment. "With Shades of Red I wanted to combine my
love of Jazz style vocals alongside my love for UK garage in a way that still
felt authentic for both sounds", she says. "I'm very interested in
revamping and presenting the 'old skool' for a new audience while hoping that
the people who do have respect for these more retro sounds will also
appreciate the tracks. For example the lyrics 'such an uneasy evil' ect in
Nyt lyf is a nod to the track of the same name which is one of my favourite
Jazz standards." 'All Night Long' is a bass-driven bouncer; romantic
lyricism, skippy beats and punchy production makes for an easy-listening
groove that could just as easily go off in the club, while 'Delectable' sees
Eliza marry lounge-jazz vocalisation with M4A4's joyous blend of UK and US
garage - inspired, uplifting and joyous. 'Temptation' is a celebration of the
Hackney melting pot; meandering through blues, soul, jazz, house and garage
in a contemporary blend of old and new, before a late-night rush in the rave
is inspired by the 160 breakbeats and lairy basslines of 'Troublemaker's

Eshu
records co-founder Ivano Tetelepta for his first solo release on the label.
It is also the imprint's first full length, but Tetelepta's second album
after the hypnotic drum workout that was True Colours, his debut on Fear of
Flying in 2012. It comes as a double vinyl release with the first disc being
limited, and finds the producer casting himself free from the dance floor and
serving up a beautifully atmospheric soundtrack that would be a perfect
companion for a nature documentary. When making EPs and 12"s,
Tetelepta's smooth and infectious drums are always front and centre in his
work, whether solo or as producing with label mates under the ESHU alias.
He's also worked with labels like Siena and KERING, but here he shows another
side that focusses on short pieces, melody and blissful sound design. To give
this album its perfectly warm analogue sound, the whole thing was recorded
via cassette and revox tape. The first ten tracks are short, immersive
musical worlds with poignant chords and glistening melodies. Some twinkle and
shimmer, some sound like an underwater eco system coming to life, and others
seem to come from deepest space where solar winds and sonar pulses pass you
by. It's cinematic and evocative stuff that takes you away from the here and
now and into a different realm. The four tracks on disc two then start with
Senang, a suspensory and multi-layered piece of music that has keys,
modulations and samples wrapping all around you before Whistle Of Patience
has a supple minimal drum line that slowly gets under your skin. Ede 2
Nijmegen is then a turbulent dub track which builds a darker mood before
closer De Test sinks back into supple, rubbery and warm drums laced up with
hypnotic pads that circle all around. This is an ambitious album of
meditative music that offers a beautiful place to lose your mind |

"Teilstueck"
(German for part or segment) is the next excerpt of Jacob Stoy's ongoing
attempt to translate his surroundings into music. It's his second EP for
Uncanny Valley and is even more multifaceted than his debut
"Redenswart" from 2012. With "OMG" you'll get the feeling
that something sublime will happen right from the beginning. It's one of
those tracks whereby time stands still until a mighty synth-line unfolds in
all its glory. "CFM" comes in the same musical vein with a similar
and slightly melancholic bass-synth dominating the drumming. By far more
cheerful is "MKM". Based on a catchy bass line foundation, Jacob
Stoy showcases wonderful synth-effects and sound with the beautifully
oscillated pad making the cut. This is House music for machine lovers. The
flipside starts with "HIM" and probably the most floor-friendly
track on the record. The slowly but steadily rising organ chords prepare
things and when the carefully targeted percussion elements come in, it feels
like summer will never end. In contrast, "QFL" lives from its
mysterious atmosphere and is very good example for Jacob Stoy's preference to
use Electronica-like sounds for his House Music. The record is rounded up
with "HHM" and a little nod towards past times when he used to play
in a Jazz band. With its Delay effects, a fuzzy guitar and a great bass
melody it's not far away from Krautrock either. For the artwork Jacob Stoy

Shinedoe
readies her fifth album ‘Freedom Riders’ on her MTM Records imprint with the
release of her vinyl-focused ‘Wake Up’ EP, offering a four-track preview into
the project while unveiling a selection of diverse electronic productions for
home listening through to the dancefloor. Over two decades, Dutch DJ and
producer Chinedum Nwosu, aka Shinedoe, has established her presence as one of
house and techno’s most loved talents, while carving a true path to her own
vision. Based in Amsterdam and featuring as a key part of the city’s rich and
blossoming underground scene, with performances across De Martkantine,
Shelter and Thuishaven to international institutions such as Berghain to
fabric, her releases on the likes of Rekids, Cocoon, Bpitch Control and her
2021 release ‘The Observer’ on Jeff Mills’ iconic Axis cemented her
reputation as one of the scene’s first talents. Having launched her own label
MTM Records in 2018, releasing four EPs on the label to date, October signals
the arrival of the label’s first album in the form of her ten-track ‘Freedom
Riders’ - an expansive and diverse project created in lockdown capturing
sonics from across the spectrum - with the LP preceded by Nwosu’s four-track
album sampler EP titled ‘Wake Up’. “Freedom Riders is about living in a world
where there is peace, and all our basic needs are fulfilled. Each being
having the right to live in peace, be happy and to be. We are all Freedom
Riders, some of us get lost and need to get back to the source.” - Shinedoe.
Opening production ‘Wake Up’ is a tension-building journey through metallic
textures, warped vocals and eerie interludes, while album title cut ‘Freedom
Riders’ fuses hazy atmospherics, rich chords, crisp percussion and sweeping
acid lines to offer a late-night ride through smoky territories. On the flip,
B1 ‘Peace’ offers an exemplary balance of light and dark with delicate yet
vibrant leads guiding murky undertones and sharp percussion throughout,
before closing with the hypnotic, off-kilter and mind-altering sonics of
‘Safety First’, traversing soundscapes to showcase and excellently crafted
early-morning cut. Cuts across the album continue this wide-reaching and rich
variation, with the likes of ‘Shine’ and ‘Lockdown’ drawing on classic and
modern house influences to offer striking additions for the dancefloor, while
‘Floor Action’ and closing track ‘See The Light’ veering into more dubby,
paired back territories to offer up a sense of space and tranquillity - with
the ten-track project showcasing a carefully crafted album rich in sound
design showcasing one of Amsterdam’s finest talents |

The combination of Jorge Ben and
Trio Mocotó had already produced great things when Forca Bruta first appeared
in 1970. Ben's self-titled album of the year before had reeled off a
succession of Brazilian hits, including 'País Tropical' and 'Cadê Teresa',
and made the four musicians very busy as a result. Forca Bruta was a slightly
different album, a slice of mellow samba soul that may perhaps have been the
result of such a hectic schedule during 1969. One of the hidden gems in Jorge
Ben's discography, it's a wonderful album because it kept everyone's
plentiful musical skills intact while simply sailing along on a wonderful
acoustic groove that may have varied little but was all the better for its
agreeable evenness. The songs may have been more difficult to distinguish --
virtually every one began with acoustic guitar, similar instrumentation, and
Ben-s caressing vocals over the top -- but it made the record one of the best
in Ben's hearty career |

prominence in the late 1950s, after having toured with Dizzy Gillespie. Jazz

There
has to be a certain amount of chaos, or it just doesn't work', Sam De Nef
summarizes his modus operandi. Sam is a young songwriter, a singer and a
musician, but he's a sketch artist at heart. Just like the paintings of
lonesome figures in eerie settings he brushes up occasionally, Sam composes
his songs by carefully picking a color and mood. Spontaneous movements are
woven into clearly defined shapes and melodies. Impressionist lyrics provide
the finishing touch, and the cast of guest musicians featured on Dawn/Dusk is
invited according to the shade or contrast they can add to the final picture.
Over the course of one year, Sam wrote, composed, and recorded the skeleton
of this debut album in a period of transition, moving from his parental home on
the idyllic outskirts of Antwerp to an apartment closer to the urban centre.
And yet, despite being in domestic flux, all ten songs on Dawn/Dusk bask in
the same intimate, hospitable glow. Songs from a room, as one great poet (and
a De Nef favorite) once named one of his albums. 'I felt greatly inspired by
a visit to my girlfriend's family in Serbia', says Sam. 'The way they sing
and play music together, at home, round the table or by a fire - very
intimate, very inviting - really shaped my ideas about music'. His experience
in Serbia also resulted in the song Olja, a gentle waltz embellished with
euphonium - courtesy of James De Graef (Shht, aka Loverman) who also
contributed keys on the album - named after and dedicated to his girlfriend
Jovana's late grandmother, the warm hearted mater familias, 'armed with the
pride / of a girl who never cried'. Last year, when Sam released his debut
EP, Lonely Day, Crowded Year, he wore the apparent influences of the song
writing greats (Young, Cohen, Dylan...) high up his sleeve, in a minimal,
mostly acoustic setting. This time, thanks in big part to the contributions
of and creative chemistry with band mate, multi-instrumentalist, and
co-producer Pieter-Jan De Craene, his musical palette has more on offer. In
keeping with the painter's metaphor, there's more depth, shade, and hue to
his imagined still-lifes, portraits, and sceneries. It's in De Craene's
lapsteel and in confidant Nicolas Rombouts' (Dez Mona) walking bass during
Lonely Dinner, a fine example of delicate but compelling americana
('flanderiana'?) about bowling alleys, hotel bars, and shared casseroles.
It's in the sweeping touches of violin by Justine Bourgeus (aka Tsar B) in
Come Over and the epic closer Apollo, a song about the beauty and tragic
romance of youth, written by Sam together with his brother Brent. The younger
De Nef also contributed to the single Passerby's Ghost, an intriguing duet
with Chicago based singer Tenci, for which he translated his experiences with
lucid dreaming and out of body experiences. 'He's the only one who can write

Belgian
label founded by Viernulvier Arts Centre (formerly Vooruit) to release music
composed for theatre, dance and performances. Viernulvier Records‘ first
release will be The Shedding of Skin, the debut album from the Belgian-Iraqi
Use Knife, set to be released on September 30, 2022. Use Knife is the music
project of Stef Heeren, Kwinten Mordijck and Saif Al-Qaissy, in collaboration
with multidisciplinary artist Youniss Ahamad. The project first emerged when
Stef and Kwinten, both also active members of Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat,
met Saif during auditions for a dance performance. The musical possibilities
that presented themselves gave the gentlemen the drive to start the journey
of uniting their Belgian and Iraqi musical backgrounds. The album’s title,
The Shedding of Skin, refers to the human survival instinct, the desire to
leave war and disaster behind and build a new life in a completely different
environment. In addition to making music and composing together, Saif,
Kwinten and Stef had countless conversations in order to gain insight into
each other’s lives. These conversations are reflected in the song lyrics: for
one of them, the worst is all behind them and they are focused on a brighter
future, while the other is aware of all the privileges he has been given. The
need to address this inequality is reflected in the combination of dreamy
Arab songs with punky Dadaist touches. For the recordings of the Arabic
percussion, vocals and wind instruments, the band worked together with Joris Caluwaerts
(Stuff., Lady Linn, Hydrogen Sea,…) in his Finster Studio. The mastering was
done by Frederik Dejongh aka Jerboa Mastering. Youniss Ahamad provided the
artwork, Farah Fayyad converted the English album title into Arabic script
and Jef Cuypers and Chloé D’hauwe realised the graphic design of the cover |
