repress - Detroit's deep techno master, Deepchord, makes a more than welcome
return to Soma after 5 years. With a brand new album dropping, Rod Modell
delves deep into his ethereal sonic world to bring you 'Functional Extraits
1'. The first single to be taken from the forthcoming album. Built in a way
that only Deepchord can, he transports you to different realms with lush
soundscapes and perfectly processed electro-acoustics giving you an insight
to the mind of the unique artist. Shale glides across a field of
electo-static noise, guided gently by cisps, fleeting percussion and gently
warping synths. Lateral begins awash with waves of sound and glistening dub
stabs while rolling beats acts as the heart beat of the track with a building
intensity adding a sense of urgency. The uplifting yet dystopian sounds of
Mapping spiral into existence urging you down the rabbit hole as more classic
techno percussion manoeuvres this track on it's journey. Modell seeking out
his roots as yet more traditional dub techno prevails via the final track,
Ricochet. Pumping kicks and sub set to a perfect pace and ambience is a
perfect, contemporary nod to the time honoured Deepchord sound |

Ramón Restrepo, known from his
work and the Colombian 80s extreme Metal pioneers PARABELLUM, BLASFEMIA and
from the Ultra Metal movement! He is still today active in the Colombian
scene, creating raw uncompromising black&thrash of the most ancient evil
way! A true favourite at the I HATE HQ! "Resurrección maldita de los
falsos egos" was originally released in 2015. Now we unleashed the album
with the bonuses taken from "Contundente final",the 2012 album from
R.A.M.O.N. (Ramón Restrepo's "solo band"). For fans of early South
American sound of mid&late/80s, this can only be described as the wettest
of dreams - or the blackest of vomits |

For
the first time in more than a decade, Paul St. Hilaire (AKA Tikiman) presents
a solo album – 100% Tiki. Over his 30-plus year career, St. Hilaire has
become one of dance music’s quietly legendary figures. Born and raised in
Dominica, he moved to Berlin in 1994 and has lent both his voice and his
musicianship to some of the most iconic electronic music from the German
capital – and beyond. Renowned for his collaborations with Moritz von Oswald
and Mark Ernestus (AKA Rhythm & Sound), he has also appeared on records
with Deadbeat, Rhauder, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers and Stereotyp (G-Stone
Recordings), amongst others. However, few know the extent of St. Hilaire’s
compositional and technical mastery. From his home studio in Kreuzberg, which
includes an extensive collection of vintage hardware, self-built instruments
and notebooks scribbled with endless lyrics, he has created a vast archive of
material spanning ambient dub, avant-jazz, lush techno and lovers rock.
Tikiman Vol. 1 is a heady, downtempo tour de force of patois metaphors on
education, displacement and personal vs. global histories, as is evident on
slippy album opener “Bedroom in My Bag”: Mister, mister / Where are you
going? / I’m heading for a faraway land / What are you having in the bag in
your hand? / Help us to understand / He said, I’ve got my bedroom in my bag.
Overall, the album’s lyrics reflect on life between Berlin and Dominica,
specifically St. Hilaire’s hometown of Grand Bay, where he has worked with
various musicians famous for the island’s different genres of carnival music.
St. Hilaire himself always favoured the island’s more “discrete” music,
developing a sonic synergy between two different geographical strains of
groove and minimalism, and combining them with foundational Caribbean mixing
techniques, which provide the basis for his songwriting and distinct
baritone. Tikiman Vol.1 offers a rare insight into St. Hilaire’s complex
artistry, from the eyes-down grooves of “Little Way” and the guitar-heavy
digi dancehall experiment “Keep Safe,” to the subtle hypnosis of “Ten to One”
and the softly crashing synth waves of closer “Three And A Half”, evoking not
only beaches but also coasts and borders. It’s a fitting expression of both
the breadth of St. Hilaire’s work, as well as his history as one of the few
black, Berlin-based artists who, despite remaining largely overlooked, has
influenced the city’s electronic music culture since its beginnings. Credits:
Written & Produced by Paul St. Hilaire. Mastered by Stefan Betke. Artwork
by Grant Gibson. Kynant Records was founded in 2015 by Richard Akingbehin, a
British-Nigerian radio programmer (Refuge Worldwide), music writer and DJ.
Originally specialising in deep techno and featuring artists such as Cio
D’Or, Terrence Dixon and Donato Dozzy, Kynant has since launched a sub-label
Kynant EX which focuses on ambient, dub and experimental electronics |

In the space of a short career, Aussie producer suki has managed
to successfully carve out a space for his inimitable extra terrestrial
concoctions. Listening to Photosynthesis EP is like a party on the moon, with
giddy old school rave styles reimagined in a cosmic context. Beginning with
some gnarly acid house, it soon becomes breaks which on the B-side morphs
into trance and super-slowed breakbeat. Texture takes centre stage, each blip
tempting to the touch, and fun and playfulness shine through |

Los Angeles' UKG stalwart brings
us the latest Time Is Now release: a 140BPM 5-track special sure to rip open
any dancefloor. Although Sage Hunt wasn't born into the UK hardcore
continuum, the UK hardcore continuum was decidedly born into her. In the space
of her relatively short career, she has fast become one of the scene's most
recognised names, having shared lineups with the likes of Conducta, Sam
Binga, collaborated with Oakland badgal bored lord, and appeared on our last
TIN compilation alongside Soul Mass Transit System with Sexy Thing. Forlorn
EP showcases what else the UKG fanatic has tucked up her sleeve, slammed with
big and bad warped basslines, raga vocals, eski samples and saxophone
atmospherics. Strap in! |

There
is big news from the camp at Greyscale Records. Greyscale #9 is here!! A
well-respected veteran of the dub techno scene Upwellings (Vincent Raude), is
the star of this show for the label's prominent's chapter of releases.
Upwellings is not alone thought! #9 features stunning remixes by household
names with Bluetrain (Steve O'Sullivan) and Ohm & Octal Industries makes
this is one of the must have releases in 2023. In true Upwellings form, 'Lark
Dub' is a brisk and polished track that has a friendly groove that should
delight all listener's while Bluetrain turns the remix to a more 4x4 affair
naturally injecting it with a house flair. 'Fed on Dub' is a more stark
contrast as the alternate featured track. Addictive sequenced sound elements
combust like a scientific experiment gone awry. A deep groove that pulses
heavy in the sub range. Ohm & Octal Industries up the tempo in their
version while still relishing in the signature sound effects. Adding a bit of
a melody in spaces brings in a beautiful soundscape and atmosphere to the
overall shimmering track. To have all these excellent producers in support on
one release is a true treat. Released on super clean white 180 gram vinyl as
well as digital. This record will not leave your crate! |

repress - Altamira caves, Santander 34.000 B.C. One of the oldest
archeological sites on planet earth, just 30 mins away by car was born and
raised P.E.A.R.L. Following the primitivism of those who preceded him, Poor
Lord is an act of pure Neanderthal techno, stomping, explosive and classic
hardcore flavor, can't wait to elevate Herrensauna peak time pressure with
this. And as if this was Rotterdam records. Dimi forgives that front left
2-step raver facing down with, a small break and a sublime kitsch hardcore
line, expertly driving by the solo project of one half of AnD. After the
massive remix for Peder on KAOS04 OnScreenActor comes back with his first
solo production. I talk to him via an intermediate and I still have no clue
who is the responsible of this music, although I do not care. For me TACHI is
the greatest production ever released in KAOS. Finest murky hyperdisko.
u.r.trax was born in this millenium, met her when she was working as artist
care of Possession last year, not sure even she had the legal age to go in
but her classy and freaky bangers should be definitely sounding in the mighty
Paris rave. Folge Mir is just a small showcase of her big talent. Follow her.
This may be the toughest KAOS till date, take it or not. Fear enough |

Gaïsha
is the collaboration between the Belgian-Moroccan singer Aïcha Haskal and
some exquisite musicians, bringing you oriental & psychedelic grooves.
Aicha Haskal’s voice is smooth and warm, and switches seamlessly between
Arabic chants, parlando and even rap. The diverse background of the musicians
(Absynthe Minded, Sylvie Kreusch, Va Fan Fahre, Echoes of Zoo, De Beren
Gieren) results in a brilliant melting pot of styles, ranging from cabaret to
spaghetti westerns and eastern elements. Their first album will be released
on the 24th of March 2023. In November they dropped the single ‘Ana Aïcha’.
An ode to the singer’s name, spreading a clear message: gender equality. The
melody translates this protest into a great psychedelic oriental trip. The previous
track ‘Ghalat’ got some promising reviews: •“Who is a fan of the music of
Altin Gün, has a nice discovery with this new single from the Ghent based
Gaïsha.” - Indie Style •“The rhythm, synths and groove seem western, but
otherwise everything about this track exudes an eastern melancholy. And when
Haskal switches to French, you imagine yourself somewhere in a shisha bar in
cosmopolitan Paris.” - Damusic •“Sounds like: an Arab-psychedelic cracker
with a pinch of funk and Serge Gainsbourg” - Cutting Edge |

After three years of deep work,
Stas Karpenkov's debut album is released on Gost Zvuk in the form of an
abstract, free-form study. The album is saturated with the Black Sea breeze
and the natural beauty of the peninsula, a land associated with the life of
the author. It's a musical representation of its surrounding reliefs, an ode
to the cyclicity of the waves, and a journey through soundscapes. These
manifestations of maritime romance also include the experience of
co-producing with Terrence Dixon and Kuzma Palkin on a couple of tracks that
play an important role in the idea of the record |

With originals going for up to
800 euros on ebay, this is the holy grail of Japanese hardcore. Released back
in 1987, GISM's second album sounds as violent and noisy as their
groundbreaking debut 'Detestation' but also embraces hints of NWOBHM and
early industrial. Sounding like a cross between Iron Maiden, Conflict,
Bathory, and early Ministry, this is the album that freed hardcore and
reinvented it |

Lo Fidelity is back with another
edition of Rave Invaders. This time Lennard Ypma drops a diverse selection of
tracks, ranging from utterly deranged acid, classic house, and electro to a
track that you can see as a sarcastic take on what modern society is doing to
humanity. That's not all though: Legowelt joined in and made a remix of the
acid-infused electro track "Wolf Men", transforming it into a
spaced-out house tune that entirely morphs into total kick madness halfway,
being a true potential closing anthem for the heavier sets |

The Young Senators are an exemplary progenitor of DC's
hyper-local, hyper-celebrated Go-Go scene. Peers of Chuck Brown's Black Heat
and Soul Searchers, the septet was led by energetic singer and conga player
Jimi Dougans, and featured saxophonist Leroy Flemming, guitarist Calvin
Charisty, keyboardist Frank Hooker, drummer James Johnson, bassist Wornell
Jones, and trumpeter Phillip Guilbeau. The band issued two singles on the the
tiny Innovation label, before joining up with Motown's Eddie Kendricks in 1972
for his sophomore effort People... Hold On. The Young Senators' fuzzed-out
brand of psychedelic soul is often bootlegged, but finds it first legitimate
release in 45 years via these remastered sides |

It
seems like an age since Icelandic producer Adalsteinn Gudmundsson's last
album as Yagya, 2020's ''Old Dreams and Memories.'' The first album to be
released on his own label Small Plastic Animals it was followed by the
four-track ''Always Maybe Tomorrow'' EP in 2021. ''Faded Photographs'' is his
ninth studio album, the most involved and time-consuming project to date and
collaborative on a scale not seen since 2012's ''The Inescapable Decay of My
Heart.'' It also marks an exceptionally confident return to the art of
song-writing, but where that earlier album was a more upbeat dub techno-pop
affair, ''Faded Photographs'' is nostalgic, wistful, reflective and steeped
in poetic romanticism. Gudmundsson's love of the art of the album is also
more pronounced here than ever before, almost every single track tied
together by the particularly unifying use of triplet rhythms in combination
with 4/4 beats, beguiling hushed vocals and enveloping, molten dub bass
tones. Combined with a typical dedication to sound design and production,
''Faded Photographs'' is rendered an utterly seamless experience, demanding
to be heard as a whole. Written and produced when we had become more distant
and disconnected from one another than ever before, ''Faded Photographs'' brings
together and showcases an ensemble of artists in a spirit of collaboration
that flies in the face of adversity, a true product of its time |

are pleased to deliver four tracks of intoxicating after-hours dance music
from Italian duo, Voodoos & Taboos. Self-releasing a number of vinyl-only
releases before debuting in 2021 on Phonica AM, a new sub label of the
legendary London record store, ‘Tropical Love’ refines the V&T sound
further still into physicality and sensuality alike. DJs with a taste for
sunrise and beyond are truly spoiled for choice by Voodoos & Taboos, with
each track bottling a different level of rave energy. ‘XTC’ is built around
perhaps their most outlandish riff to date, alongside heavy-duty drums and
cut-and-paste vocal samples reverent to an early, optimistic era of machine
party music. Its A-side sister and title track, ‘Tropical Love’ is wide-eyed
and warm, spring-loaded with true tech-house chords and frequent plunges into
fresh pools of bass. On the flip, ‘Warped’ strips the elements back further
still, rolling with confidence on acid-flecked modulations and primitive
piano, building towards a smooth launch into innerspace. Finally, ‘LSDREAMS’
delivers a lucid and deeply psychedelic send-off, as V&T lower the tempo
to showcase the more organic side of their nocturnal inclinations. Another

Very
few electronic music artists can boast of spanning a wide musical spectrum as
the UK producer Calum Lee aka Paleman / Fresnel Lens.Always emphasizing the
percussive side (advantage of being a jazz drummer), and always with an
innovative spirit, the releases of this authenticsound designer oscillate
between the most abstract / experimental electronica and minimalist club
focused techno, from atmospheric andintrospective works to the sickest
dubstep / bass music. As at 30D we declare ourselves absolute fans of Calum's
music, we had a clear obligation to ask him to join our catalogue,
specifically for the EyesHave It sub-label (we had especial interest in his
interpretation of broken, dark and industrial techno). His answer was direct
and unmistakable:"I've sent you a lot of pieces that fit with your label
vision and the imagery that we love.. I've been studying existentialism a lot
recently, so thesetunes are a reflection of my headspace at the
moment!". A true declaration of intent! And here it is, five perfect
examples of obsessive tribal madness, overexciting synthetic broken beats and
a lot of rawness. A pure musical gem |

Landing on Delsin with a highly developed strain of emotionally
inquisitive electro, Reedale Rise presents a new four-track EP which builds
on his growing reputation for beautifully rendered headphone escapism. Since
first appearing in 2015, Liverpool-based Simon Keat has released on such
respected outlets as Frustrated Funk and 20:20 Vision, while last year he
released This Beautiful Life, an LP for Assemble Music. From the twinkling
melodic mystery of 'Littoral Zone' to the playful synth flourishes of
'Globular', 'Driftwood's plush, expressive layered lines to 'Artemia's
deep-diving introspection, this latest release confirms Keat as a leader in
the field of contemporary electro, delivering tracks with pristine production
but crucially placing feeling as the priority ahead of the considerable
technical finesse |

edition including 2 innersleeves with extended liner notes. Genesis P-Orridge
and The Hafler Trio: do these 2 legends still need any introduction? Genesis
P-Orridge was the founding person of COUM Transmissions in 1969, Throbbing
Gristle in 1975, Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth and Psychic TV in 1981. Andrew
McKenzie started The Hafler Trio (together with Cabaret Voltaire's Chris
Watson) in 1982 and since then released all his work under this moniker and
collaborated with William S. Burroughs, Autechre, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nurse
With Wound and Jónsi from Sigur Rós, to name a few. And he constructed the
first kit Dreamachine in 1989 together with Brion Gysin. The impact and
influence of these pioneers of the industrial underground, visionary thinkers
and open minds, anti heroes of the misfits and the outcasts is hard to
underestimate. On 'Dream Less Suite', the first new album by The Hafler Trio
since 2016, Andrew McKenzie unearths, resurrects and completed recordings he
made through the years with Genesis P-Orridge. This 2LP features soundtracks
to unfinished films, live performances and the real versions of tracks you
know and love, released for the very first time and mastered from the
original reel to reel tapes. Expect the unexpected and be prepared for the
unprepared.
File under: Subliminal soul music for the very faint-hearted. Demented
disco for insecure insomniacs. Asymmetric acid for hoovering hipsters.
Immersive polka for naughty night nurses. Soothing sounds for crying babies.
Liberating latin for lesbians on xtc. Transcending tribalism for jogging
junkies. Frenetic freakbeat for nihilistic numerologists. Jiving jazz for
tyrannic transgenders. Hypnotic exotica for corrupt gymnastics. Indescribable
sounds for angry journalists. Endless entertainment for everyone and the rest
of the family. All f#cks given 2.0 Masters at work |

Re-release
of the iconic 'Screen Series': Red Screen. Limited Edition Picture Disc.
Remastered. Second part of the legendary "Screen" series. It was
hard to imagine a follow up to Yellow Screen as it was so successful. The
pressure on our shoulders was quite high and rightly so, so we had to outdo
ourselves for sure. The first one to be « see the light » was New-York
Philharmonic. A tasty mix of breakbeat, techno and trance. The main melody is
just hypnotizing and gives a real feeling of escape. This track was chosen to
be the main track of the EP. Strawberry Milk is the most
"underground" track of the EP. It is above all a personal pleasure
of producers & composers in studio. We knew that New-York Philharmonic
was going to be a hit so we had fun without any pressure on this track. It's
a much more "mental" track that still gives off a certain
melancholy. Friday Sickness is without a doubt Mr Sam's favorite of all the
tracks in the "Screen" series. It just contains all the elements
that make a track perfect. It was as its name indicates composed and finished
on a Friday when Mr Sam was sick. The track was played the next day on CD at
La bush and gave the audience a great moment of emotion. Mr Sam knew right
away that the track was going to be a big success. This EP is a perfect
symbiosis of Mr. Sam's and Fred Baker's vision and proved that their
relationship would only result in one classic release after another. The duo
was only at the beginning of a great journey |

The charm of exploration leads to
cinematic echoes that fuse rattling break drums and synergetic nuances,
creating a sphere of ancestral musical paths in which a poly-form stylistics
gives a recognisable imprint to 'Foreshadow', Marco Bruno's new album that
embarks on a new sonic exploration and delves into the meanders of research
with an abysmal attention to detail, a significant project in the evolution
of the artist and his Evighet Records label. For this release, two veterans
such as James Ruskin and Mark Broom, with their alias The Fear Ratio, set in
time their experience, masterfully reinterpreting that pivotal feeling of
free expression that reigns at the heart of the project |

Limited
Edition Repress - Marbled 12" in Spatial Sleeve A thundering take on the
classic Hot Pants break leads in eerie synth work, developing a powerful
haunting atmosphere. An intense driving bassline intertwines with the beats
& hats, challenging the balance between the headphones and the
dancefloor. A deceptively simple break expertly programmed with ASC's
trademark punch is layered with dreamy 808 bass and long, swirling pads &
synths, creating a luscious smooth vibe to the aptly titled Cosmic Energy.
Expertly programmed yet understated breakwork punctuates Stargate with an
unforgettable kick-cymbal-kick-cymbal sequence, laden with room-filling sub
bass, a collage of effects and "that" whale sample used so
effectively it feels fresh again in 2022. Prophecy effortlessly combines a
plethora of samples and effects you'll recognise from classic atmospheric
drum & bass spanning the 90's and beyond to create a true "old
school brand new" vibe set to a variety pack of jungly breaks and
occasional vocal hits, with a lush tonal transition towards the latter
stages. Words by Chris Hayes (Spatial / Red Mist) |

repress - IMPERIAL EP. We figured it was time for some d&b again, we had
a few tracks lying around for a while that we wanted to finish and put out
and we had 2 collabs that went well together. We wanted to call it the
"Tryhard EP", cause all the tracks were so full on. Then Nik &
Karol (khomatech.com) started on the artwork, and couldn't really come up
with anything cool with that name, so we decided 'Imperial' was a better
name. The artwork took about a week to make. We are very proud of this EP.
IMPERIAL: Phace came out to Groningen again, as he tends to do, to do music.
We started this one without working on the main groove first, Florian had
brought this awesome chord progression. We made the intro and progression
from it, which is quite different musically from our normal stuff. Then we
went a bit theatrical with the music, I guess we kind of surprised ourselves
with the intensity of the drop. But it was refreshing to do. And it's been
going down rather well in our sets. TRYHARD: This is an older track that has
had quite a few incarnations. It used to be called "lomp", which
translates to crude, or blunt. We had it lying around unfinished for a long
time, and a certain youtube set rip was getting a lot of love, so we figured
we'd finish it. Changed the mix, added a rollout section, etc. One of the
inspirations for this track is Bad Company - Dogfight, such a sick tune.
DUSTUP: Our friends The Upbeats came down to Groningen amidst one of their
Europe tours and we hung out, got in the studio, found an old unused bass
riff, used it in the buildup, recorded all of us going 'HA' and 'ZU', worked
on drum fills for a long time, temporarily called the tune 'Pumpers', jumped
around in the studio and voila! "Dust Up" was born. CONTAINMENT:
This track has had many faces as well. It started as a bit of a Kemal tribute
and and an attempt to do as many things with synths as possible, like the
main drums for example (FM8). Along the way it became a journey back into the
dark spacious sound of the early 2000's era of D&B. Comes in standard
full colour Vision Recordings repress sleeve |

It
is with a singular pleasure that we welcome Marc Romboy to the ever growing
stable of live artists at ASW! Marc Romboy is an artist renowned within the
electronic scene for his eclectic, boundary-pushing approach and decades
worth of experience working both behind the scenes and behind the decks. In
recent years he has embraced performing live as another creative outlet and,
indeed, creative challenge. As an artist and performer, Marc has always
pushed the boundaries of his creativity and this, Marc’s first studio album
in 6 years is a true masterwork of techno from one of the masters of the
genre. Growing up in the West of Germany close to the borders of both The
Netherlands and Belgium, Marc was always instinctively drawn to music. He
would attend the acid house parties prevalent in the area, with an epiphany
of sorts on the dancefloor of Front club in Hamburg in 1987. An avid record
collector, he would listen to Krautrock, breaks, Italo disco, Chicago house
and more, and experienced some of the first all house and techno clubs in
Europe; the legendary Roxy club in Amsterdam and Dorian Grey in Frankfurt.
Learning to DJ, and later on produce, was a natural step. He founded the ’Le
Petit Prince’ imprint in 1993 as a platform for the music of friends he was
playing out, which went on to be named Label Of The Year by various German
electronic music publications the following year. Its reputation led Marc
into collaborating with other DJs to manage their labels too. Meanwhile, Marc
went on to notch up an impressive discography of EPs, tracks and
collaborations, carving his own sound; emotive, versatile, and featuring
distinctive basslines. 2004 was a landmark year for the artist, with the
beginning of his own, completely self-run label Systematic. Since It's birth,
the label has provided a home for productions from the likes of Robert Hood,
Kenny Larkin, Omar-S, Terrence Parker, Timo Maas, kINK and many more. It also
provided the platform for Marc’s first album, ‘Gemini’ in 2005, followed by
four further LPs; 2008’s ‘Contrast’, 2009’s ‘6 Monde’ with Stephan Bodzin
(which birthed the pair’s now-legendary track ‘Atlas’), 2013’s ‘Taiyo’ with
Ken Ishii, and 2014’s three-disc retrospective compilation ‘Shades’. And his
collaborative orchestral LP ‘Voyage de la Planète’, Marc’s forward-thinking
last album. Pushing the boundaries between classical and electronic music, it
makes for a moving , atmospheric outing for the producer - “I feel like there
are still a couple of beautiful sounds to create”. Marc’s output has been
exemplary and with his inspiration rising for performing live he now brings
us the wonderful “Music Made for Aliens”. A work of true electronic
inspiration. Marc will be performing live at ASW events coming up soon |

Legendary
electronic music duo Orbital return Early 2023 with new album “Optical
Delusion”, the Hartnoll brothers first studio album since 2018’s Monster’s
Exist. Recorded in Orbital’s Brighton studio, “Optical Delusion” includes
contributions from Sleaford Mods, Penelope Isles, Anna B Savage, The Little
Pest, Dina Ipavic, Coppe, and perhaps most surprisingly, The Medieval Baebes.
Earlier this year, Orbital celebrated their storied history with “30
Something” which, unlike other Best Of’s, contains reworks, remakes, remixes
and re-imaginings of landmark Orbital tracks including “Chime”, “Belfast”,
“Halcyon”, “Satan”, and “The Box” “A human being experiences himself, his
thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest [of humanity] – a
kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of
prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a
few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this
prison…” You many have seen this quote attributed to Albert Einstein on
social media, the archetypal Smartest Guy Ever apparently having an
out-of-character religious epiphany. It certainly leapt out at Paul Hartnoll
of Orbital who spotted it in Michael Pollan’s 2018 book How to Change Your Mind:
What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying,
Addiction, Depression and Transcendence. “As soon as I saw ‘optical delusion’
I thought Oh hey, that’s the album title,” says Paul. “It just seemed to say
so much about how people construct their own realities, how we see patterns
that aren’t there, how we see what we want to see. “But it’s actually a
misquote. He never quite said that. In the German original what he’s really
saying is that human experience is as relative as physics. Wouldn’t it be
good if we could accept that, and find a kind of universal theory of
everything for the human race? Then you look at everything from history to
art to your Twitter feed and you think yeah, that’s what we’re all trying to
do all of the time…” Hence ‘Optical Delusion’, the tenth original Orbital
album and the latest in a burst of renewed post-pandemic creativity for two
brothers who’ve stayed at the top of their game longer than anyone from the
post-1988 Class of Acid House. Now with ‘Optical Delusion’ the Hartnolls dig
deeper into the unquiet psyche of our increasingly surreal and disordered
world. Sketched out partly during lockdown but fully recorded in the
uncertain After Times, the album summons up conflicting emotions and
sometimes beguiling images from years when the science fiction doomsdays that
the Hartnolls watched on TV as kids finally came true. There are mesmeric
tracks with names like ‘The New Abnormal’ and ‘Requiem For The
Pre-Apocalypse’ and ‘Day One’. But there are also straight-up bangers and
ethereal cosmic dreams, abstract sound wars and deeply human songs of
separation and loss... |

...And
it all starts with a bang. Lead single ‘Dirty Rat’, an outright
Fall-meets-Front-242 class rant with vocals by Sleaford Mods mob orator Jason
Williamson, harks right back to the Hartnolls’ days of politicised
anarcho-squatpunk. It began as a remix swap (Orbital did the Sleafords’ ‘I
Don’t Rate You’) and morphed into a comic, brutal, bass-driven harangue not
so much against our rulers but at the petty, mean-spirited, frightened,
Mail-reading voters who put them there: the people who are “blaming everyone
in hospital/blaming everyone at the bottom of the English Channel/blaming
everyone who doesn’t look like a fried animal.” Also key to the album is
opening track ‘Ringa Ringa (The Old Pandemic Folk Song)’ which returns to an
Orbital truism, that time always becomes a loop. This chugging, cyclical
Orbital groove gives way to an unnerving past-meets-present timeslip fit for
‘Sapphire And Steel’ as goth maenads The Mediaeval Baebes materialise to sing
‘Ring O’Roses’ – the innocent nursery rhyme whose roots are in the Black
Death. “I’ve always liked folk music and mediaeval sounds,” says Paul,
himself an occasional Morris dancer. “I had the basis of that track and I
wanted to spin it off somehow.” Trawling his archives he stumbled on The
Mediaeval Baebes’ version of ‘Ring O’Roses’ “and my hackles just went up. I
was like, my God, this is the original pandemic folk song.” ?his being
Orbital, there are collaborations galore on the album, the roles once played
by Alison Goldfrapp, Lady Leshurr or David Gray now filled by new talents.
London singer-songwriter Anna B Savage contributes a compellingly fragile,
Anohni-like vocal to ‘Home’, in which nature reclaims the scorched and vacant
mega-cities. ‘Day One’ is a pulsing techno track featuring the singer Dina
Ipavic. Paul got in touch with her after working on a score for a sculpture
show of giant robotic installations by his friend Giles Walker during the
pandemic. First Paul cut up his own score and Ipavic’s vocals on the track
The Crane, which appears on the deluxe version of the album. Then he thought,
Why not work with her for real? The result is school of ‘Belfast’, a bassy
dreamscape with vocalised clouds billowing above. The pensive ‘Are You
?live?’ adds to the Orbital product range of existential questions (‘Are We
Here?’, ‘Where Is It Going?’) in collaboration Bella Union signings Penelope
Isles, AKA brother and sister act Lily and Jack Wolter. “They’re our studio
mates, they work upstairs!” says Paul happily. “And they’ve both got amazing
voices.” But Orbital are Orbital and never far from the dancefloor.
“Eventually the more abrasive bits came back into the fold…” ‘You Are The
Frequency’, first of two tracks to feature mysterious vocalist The Little
Pest, surrounds the listener with warped voices ordering you to the
dancefloor (Phil: “we wanted the idea that the music is kind of absorbing
you”). And the second, the sinister ‘What A Surprise’, traps you in a
paranoid electronic hall of mirrors. In another nod to Orbital’s resurgent
past the cover artwork once again comes from fine art painter John Greenwood,
creator of fantastical grotesques for the covers of ‘Snivilisation’, ‘In
Sides’ and Orbital’s most recent album, 2018’s ‘Monsters Exist’. Orbital had
just had a slick Mark Farrow cover for ‘30 Something’ – this is a return to
the overripe and bulbous techno-organic constructions that somehow express
Orbital’s own uncontrollably fertile sound. There are gaps in the future that
Orbital are desperate to fill too; there will be tours and festivals and
rooms and fields full of people. Those long paralysed months when we had
little to look forward to but a Zoom DJ set made Paul and Phil appreciate the
things that make life worth living |

Musique Pour La Danse is proud to present the Donkey Kong
Country 2 OST [Recreated] of the much appreciated and globally followed
Donkey Kong Country OST recreation project led by NY-based composer and
producer Jammin’ Sam Miller. Using hex SPC data crudely converted to MIDI,
Jammin' Sam Miller painstakingly recreated DKC's soundtrack note by note, by
finding the original equipment used to create it, translating the MIDI into a
modern studio context, adding in keyboard samples, and re-mixing the sounds with
added effects and mastering. To find out more about his process watch an

Manchester based DJ/producer Antagonist cues up a collection of
dense and uncompromising electronic tracks on his R&S Records debut. The
‘Rites’ EP pulls together 5 new tracks that lean on the artist’s drum ‘n’
bass roots and influences, a sound that has informed his DJ sets and studio
productions since he launched the project in 2004. Channelling his
productions towards the more cinematic and darker side of drum ‘n’ bass and
broken beats, Antagonist has released a strong run of EPs for labels such as
Samurai Music, Ronin Ordinance, One.Seventy and his own Discipline imprint,
stamping his hybrid sound across these well received releases. Layers upon
layers of shadowy ambience and wistful tones are punctured by hard edged
beat-science, as Antagonist goes in deep on the complex breakbeats, chopping
back and forth knifelike loops and dynamic kicks. A highly accomplished debut
for the R&S label from this sonically exciting young producer. ‘Rites’ EP
by Antagonist is available on R&S Records from 17th March 2023 |

In
March 2023, Tresor Records will release "Crash Recoil", a new album
by Surgeon. It marks Anthony Child's first techno LP in five years, following
a period in which he felt uncertainty in his role as a techno producer and
found it tough to locate inspiration. This new album encounters him drawing
on spontaneous techniques to arrive at unchartered topographies. "Crash
Recoil" originates from Surgeon's recent live sets, where he
experimented with constraints in performing and embracing the twists, turns
and paradoxes that arrive from this. Each fresh iteration on consistent MIDI
sequences and hardware reconfigured tracks into dierent constellations,
creating an inspiring vortex of unpredicted events where ideas could
flourish. This new approach allowed him to capture the spontaneous energy of
his live shows in a way he had never done before. "This is not a live
album, since it has not been recorded in one go during a live performance. In
the same way that bands tour songs before going into the studio to record an
album, I was able to explore these songs and hone their eectiveness during my
live performances before creating a studio version." The result is eight
tracks that emphasise a new techno sound for Surgeon, drawing in references
from across the musical spectrum. "I can hear Coil, King Tubby, Detroit
Techno and The Cure all wrapped up with 30 years of DJing," Surgeon says
of the album. Melancholic hum-like ambiences smudge around unadorned,
near-droning basslines, crunching rhythm and percolating arpeggiations. The
tracks carry unique and potent locomotion, with a low-slung grind through
toughened terrains, breathing with a free spirit, untethered by a
studio-based perspective. We hear manifestations of the same raw material
across the album, like a textural motif, carving new variants and creating a
cohesive work full of recollection |

In this great LP Scientist
delivers one of his most progressive mixes, deconstructing the originals down
to their skeletal base and adding just the right amount of mixing
board-generated Echoplex and reverb with his patented minimal sound, a
landscape resplendent with steely piano, depth-charge drums, and futuristic
dub effects. A mind-warping yet eminently enjoyable way to check into dub

The Marvelettes' debut album from
1961 was the sixth release on Motown and the first big success for the
company after the Miracles. Released too early to picture four African
American schoolmates on the cover (which did not become customary before late
1962), Please Mr. Postman was released on the wave of the popular success of
the album's title track, the first Motown number-one single and one of the
first recorded by an all girl group. Despite their early success, the group
was eclipsed in popularity by long-term opponents the Supremes, with whom
they shared an intense rivalry that caused the girls' mental breakdowns and
illnesses of all kinds, until their definitive disbanding. The Marvelettes
were Motown's first successful girl group as well as the most underrated:
while the Supremes and the Vandellas have been in the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame since the late 80's, the Marvelettes' nomination for induction just
arrived in 2012. Only 500 copies in clear vinyl |

Founded in 1981 in Britain-s
second city Birmingham, the band Sceptre were part of a thriving local music
scene, a scene that for the most part revolved around live shows in the
region's community centres, university campuses, pubs and nightclubs. Neglected
by major labels, many bands went unrecorded and of those that did get
documented most managed to release just one or two singles. Fortunately,
Sceptre recorded and released an entire album, 1984's "Essence of
Redemption Ina Dif-rent Styley" |
