as he heads to SHDW & Obscure Shape's Mutual Rytm for his 'Quasar' EP. A
product of Naples' rich techno history, Italian DJ, producer and musician
Raffaele Attanasio is an artist who represents the city's iconic sound while
drawing from influences across the Atlantic and the genre's home of Detroit.
Garnering plaudits from artists including Jeff Mills, Len Faki and Ben Sims,
while releasing on Mills' Axis alongside Non Series, Third Wave Black, and
his own Letter From Jerusalem imprint, Attanasio's eclectic sound now delves
into Italian techno of the early 2000s as he makes his label debut on Mutual
Rytm - revealing his first EP in over two years and showcasing a new side to
his sound with 'Quasar'. Title track 'Quasar' brings a tunnelling groove
beneath floating melodies and zipping synths, before A2 'Asterion' combines
dubby stabs and punchy kicks effortlessly. On the flip, 'Blazar' is a
squelchy acid-led trip guided by sharp metallic hats, with 'Axial
Inclination' utilising jittering drums and slinking bass to keep the energy

There
are no more boundaries in dance music. Transfer, the latest EP from Amor
Satyr, not only pulls heavily from trance, but does so while also repurposing
vocal clips lifted from Brazilian baile funk. On paper, it seems like an
almost unholy musical union, but in the skilled hands of this Parisian, the
combination is straight-up deadly. This is body music, and while the record's
breakneck tempos and blazing synths are fully rooted in freewheeling rave
traditions, its thundering low-end is muscular enough to push even the
biggest favela soundsystems into the red. The EP's speedy title track rolls
out crunchy melodies atop a broken rhythm and thick sheets of bass, but it's
"Quer Dan?ar?" that perhaps best embodies the music's dual spirit,
its swirly psychedelics unfolding atop booming, electro-indebted breakbeats
and a potent array of face-smacking percussion. That array also includes a
variety of finely sliced Brazilian vocal chops, which Amor Satyr expertly
employs to punctuate the song's already dizzying drum attack. It's a
technique he returns to on "Rebola," injecting a bit more life into
the track's rumbling gallop, before wrapping up the EP on a brighter,
bouncier note with the effervescent "Bebe." |

Delivering
his first solo EP in over two years, Blue Hour releases Origins, the 21st
release on Blue Hour Music. Following a succession of remixes, V/A
contributions and an EP under his Tracing Xircles alias earlier this year,
the Berlin-based producer and DJ shares four tracks diving deeper into his UK
roots. Channelling breakbeat, techno and trance with the hallmarks of 90’s
rave, Origins builds upon the foundations created from his EP ‘Devotion’ in
2020. In this eclectic EP, Blue Hour explores several sonic palettes. The
title track blends celestial chords with urgent drums and acid basslines,
while uplifting vocals and subtle melodies wind through the track. ‘True’
dips more heavily into breakbeat territory with evolving and immersive pads,
soaring strings and a twinkling synth-line. A dynamic fusion of fast-paced
energy and soft touches. On the flip, ‘Emergence’ dances a delicate line
between melancholia and elation, as dystopian chords pool with a squelchy
acid sequence and a classic house vocal. ‘Searching’ closes on an ambient tip
with spell-binding pads and an angelic melody, conveying a bright side to
Blue Hour’s aesthetic, akin to Origins as a whole |

is the rather unexpected new project of Dutch techno icons Stefan Robbers and
Wladimir Manshanden. 32 years ago, the duo from the southern part of The
Netherlands founded one of the first Dutch techno labels: Eevo Lute Muzique.
But while Robbers (as Terrace and Acid Junkies) pursued an international
techno career in the years that followed, Manshanden preferred to remain in
the shadows. His discography is as small as it is peculiar. But his 'Evil' is
an undisputed classic, picked up by the likes of Carl Craig, Dimitri, back in
the days, and Nina Kraviz and others with the re-issue some years ago. For
that reason alone, 2023 is special. But it gets even better. And weirder. On
their collaborative new project, they collectively disassemble the eighties
pop hits of their youth into sober, futuristic spoken-word techno. On the one
hand, they do not shy away from some cringe (Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Tina
Turner). On the other, they pay tribute to some genuine electronic heroes
like Kraftwerk, New Order and (low and behold) Master C&J. The path to
the bare essentials leads through a futuristic labyrinth. Along the way, you
get hints of monotone voices, cipher codes and wondrous Dutch titles like
'Prive Onderzoek.' The outcome is alienating and magical at the same time |

Gordon is a great advertisement
for live jazz. When he really starts "stretchin' out" on a number,
and his long, firmly anchored legs begin vibrating rapidly from side to side,
the intense swing of his music has a natural visual counterpart. It's true
that you cannot see him in this album but you can feel the impact of his
personality as it is poured into his music. This session was not recorded in
a nightclub performance but in its informal symmetry, it matches the relaxed
atmosphere that the best of those made in that manner engender. Everyone was
really together, in all the most positive meanings of that word. It was so
good that Blue Note put these four men in the studio again, two days later.

Despite members playing in
well-known underground Finnish bands like KOHTI TUHOA and FORESEEN, YLEISET
SYYT has flown under the radar in the Anglophone world, with only a small
fraction of their records' tiny pressings making it outside Finland. Fortunately
for you, the hardcore fanatics at Sorry State and La Vida Es Un Mus have our
ears to the ground, and we agreed that a band this killer deserves a much
wider audience. YLEISET SYYT's sound is both blistering and anthemic, moving
nimbly from full-throttle rippers like "Hygieeninen Ruumis" to
tracks like "Hyväntekijä" and "Luovan Keskiluokan
Takapihalla," whose big chorus hooks could have anchored a Riot City or
No Future A-side. The combination of ferocious performances and songwriting
chops might remind you of older Finnish bands like LAMA, MELLAKKA, and
APPENDIX, but MINOR THREAT, THE FIX, and NECROS are equally apt comparisons |

Cacophony
is the second Rudimentary Peni album. Released after the band returned from
their first hiatus following a series of personal events that changed the
band forever. The thirty track LP keeps turning heads 34 years after its
release. Far from writing another "Death Church" the band embarked
on a truly bizarre quest. To record an album based on the life and writings
of horrors absolute king H.P. Lovecraft. A dense cacophony of total free
songwriting. Dark, gothic, intricate, unexpected head-scratching punk. The
short bursts of music twist and turn at every corner - the vocals are part
classic Blinko and part spoken word, the guitar is full of distorted awkward
tones and the every inventive bass and drums are locked together creating a truly
unique album. Cacophony is the benchmark of outsider Punk and the influence
and cult nature of this album grows with every passing year. This reissue

Limited
to 200 copies, this release is the fifth and final ep of the 5 x 12"
from the Thomas Brinkmann Retrospektiv 5xlp box set. The 5 individual
12" will be released through 2018/19. Thomas Brinkmann is one of the
great producers of Techno music and modern dance music. He initially gained
notoriety in the experimental electronic music and Techno community for his
full-length 'variations' of material by Wolfgang Voigt under his Mike Ink
moniker, and Richie Hawtin. The variations were made by playback of the
original artist records on a turntable of Brinkmann's design, which has two
tone arms with separate outputs for left and right channels. The turntables
were then pitched down from 33rpm to 27rpm and the results recorded and
mixed. Both Voigt and Hawtin were sufficiently impressed they released the
results on their own labels. Since then Thomas Brinkmann has produced some
all-time classic dance tracks, many of which are collected here in what is a
personal selection by Thomas Brinkmann himself. There are unreleased tracks,
different versions, and tracks that have never been released on vinyl |

Ramrock
on the cutting edge. Should 'The Great Encyclopaedia of Musical Genres' be at
a loss for a word to describe the music of Ghent-based Ramkot, they wouldn't
have to look far. 'Ramrock'; done. It's how the solidly carefree rocking
Ghent triumvirate themselves describe the music with which they have been
selling clubs, concert halls and festivals spicy maws since 2018. With two
EPs to their credit, 'Ramkot' (2019) and 'What Exactly Are You Looking For'
(2021), and a giglist that you can only be in awe of, the laureates of De
Nieuwe Lichting 2021 thought it was high time to stamp their awe-inspiring
sound on a first album. Le nouveau Ramkot est arrivé: with 'In Between
Borderlines', Ramkot delivers a debut full of particularly solid, yet
danceable, 'ram rock' and bangs its way through the wall of sound to a - no
doubt - very exciting future. 'In Between Borderlines' is the apotheosis of
two years of rock hard work. Idea. Elaborating. Polishing. And there's the
diamond. Ramkot is not the band to sit still and wait for the time to put
their music on tape. The time is always ripe. For 'In Between Borderlines',
Ramkot dove into the studio for a year - at different times - where they
canned eight songs, all with the familiar Ramkot signature: hard and cutting,
melodic and danceable and now and then gleefully deviating from the usual
path. The two advance singles 'Exactly What You Wanted' and 'I Can't Slow
Down' already beautifully indicated the tenor of 'In Between Borderlines':
the back straight and firmly in line, ready to continue on the successful and
- above all - very eager momentum. And did the music hit its mark?
Absolutely. Studio Brussels, Willy and KINK were immediately on board. With a
spot in De Afrekening, Catch Of The Day (Studio Brussel) and Daily Drop
(KINK) as a result. It is sometimes said that three is a magic number. It is.
A three-piece band reduces music to its essence and cuts harder live than a
Japanese chef's knife. Whereas during the recording process Ramkot was
tempted to also get to work with synths, live they invariably opt for the
more pared-down versions of their songs that - just like on the album - grab
the audience by the neck and show them every corner of the room. And it is
this playing live that has certainly not hurt the band in recent years. On
the contrary, it made Ramkot more natural, tightened the reins and gave the
band an even more distinctive look. 'In Between Borderlines' is brimming with
the pleasure of playing, the desire and eagerness to go flat out until
'everything is broken'. Ramkot never gets stuck. On 'In Between Borderlines'
this manifests itself in multi-layered songs with tentacles in solid riffs,
occasionally borrowing from other genres. Does a song have a ragtime feel to
it? Or is there a hint of 'despacito'? The band is not afraid to blend some
exotic influences with abrasive guitars and sulky drums. Extra flavour makes
the dish more interesting. And as for 'In Between Borderlines', the starter,
main course and dessert are immediately on the table. It may be finished in
one sitting |

next on Bonzai Records we have a trio of legends with their collaboration on
Jen’s (as Prayers) 1992 classic ‘Imagination’. None of these guys need any
introduction; their list of exploits would make War and Peace look like an
essay. Jens Lissat aka ‘The Godfather Of Techno’ had a new vision for this
retro gem and so, after casually chatting with Fly (Bonzai’s head honcho) the
deal was done. He is joined by fellow veterans Christian Pieters and Dany Van
Der Rieten aka Bonzai All Stars, who have over 6 decades of experience in the
music scene between them. So we’ll let the music do the talking here. The
Original Mix opens the release and right from the off we’re locked into a
surging, dancey groove thanks to chunky beats and an infectious rolling bassline.
The original melody fades through before that distinctively enchanting vocal
shines. A proper, full-on dancefloor weapon, not to be missed. Up next, the
Rave Mix does exactly what it says on the tin, delivering a high energy slice
of rave goodness. Powerful, puncy kicks and crispy hats provide the backdrop
of a saturated 303 groove with an underlying bass rumble. The vocal dominates
on the break as big synths stack up for that definitive arena experience that
will not disappoint. Concluding the release, Jens, Fly and Dany get to work
on their Crunchy 303 Mix which is a stomping 303 laden gem. Heavy acid lines
contrast against murky pads while on the break, the sublime vocal is joined
by soft melodies before a chaotic build up delivers the drop where we’re
treated to some hair-raising old skool piano moments. To round the release
off, the original mix by Prayers is added for the vinyl collectors |

Jazz
rock for psych heads, global sounds for jazz minds, or the steaming
soundtrack to a midnight desert rave? For sure, Echoes of Zoo fuse influences
from all over the musical earth into countless electrifying grooves. Follow
up to their acclaimed debut record 'BREAKOUT' (2021), the quartet's new album
'Speech of Species', to be released on May 12th 2023 via W.E.R.F. Records, is
deepening their already eclectic sound further once again. Still packed with
a lot of sonic energy and a fair amount of punk- and dub flavours, Echoes of
Zoo are this time blending in a big bunch of (Middle) Eastern and Balkan
sounds, microtonal guitars, animal communication transformed into melodies
and a host of new rhythmic experiments based on Brazilian and West African grooves.
While 'BREAKOUT' was an interesting musical interpretation of the
confrontation between humans and animals and breathed the vibes of cities and
clash of cultures, Nathan Daems (saxophonist, composer and bandleader) was
this time inspired by the communication of animals amongst each other. That's
why he named this new record 'Speech of Species'. "Messages are
constantly being transmitted in the animal world by adopting body poses:
there are more than 2,000 different poses or "words" in certain
lizard species, by dancing in the most ingenious ways, by changing colours
from geometric patterns (certain species of squids and chameleons do this),
by causing vibrations in the ground, by smells, even by giving light and so
on. How can we be so blind to that and say that animals cannot speak?"
Language and music sometimes coincide completely. Changes of melody or rhythm
are generally used by many animal species to make a specific statement, and
this is what Echoes of Zoo also tries to do through their compositions. But
music can also be purely instrumental, with no fixed meaning. In this, Nathan
again sees a parallel with the animal world: "Surprisingly, it appears
that many songbirds sing much more frequently than is necessary to
communicate. That would indicate that they enjoy making melodies."
Echoes of Zoo is the unity of four distinctive Belgian (jazz)musicians:
Nathan Daems (saxophone; cfr. Black Flower, Trance Plantations), Bart
Vervaeck (el. guitar; cfr. Compro Oro, The Tubs), Lieven Van Pée (el. bass;
cfr. De Beren Gieren, John Ghost) & Falk Schrauwen (drums; cfr. Compro
Oro, Sylvie Kreusch). The band is taking a deep dive into the musical and
cultural melting of today's biggest cities: Balkan ornaments meet Brazilian
rhythms / Gipsy scales meet fuzz guitars / Beninese grooves meet Turkish
Makam / Bass guitars meet Sufi rhythms / Rage riffs meet Kurdish trance /
Indian raga meets western guitars / Romanian drums meet swing riffs |

- nthng finally follows up his four stunning EPs with a full album proper,
arriving in a whopping 3xLP pack. Arriving a good 6 months after the LT029.5
album sampler which debuted both Soms and In My Dreams, nthng adds another
seven hazy, hooded techno bangers to those to make up a pretty dazzling body
of work. Opener 'Touches' is true ambient bliss, with shrouded, blissful
synths fuzzing into view and cut through by a soft low distant sunlight. Both
Galaxy and Eternal thump into view with a hi-paced drums colliding and
clashing with syncopated stabs and smooth dusty baselines, recalling the
tender techno-trance precipice danced by Dutch producers at the start of the
90's. The huge mysterious fan favourite and title track It Never Ends gets
it's pride of place with 9 mins of deep, cavernous techno, all rippling with
epic string-synths and washes of mountainous reverb. Even deeper numbers are
extracted from the hard-drive, including the pensively, digitally-bubbling
computer jam Unity sitting tidily alongside the super deep and subtle rolls
of Abyss. Rounding the album out is the appropriately-titled Last. A dark,
shimmering, almost emotionless number that cements a different idea of the
future. A hard, pounding, yelping, depthcharged technoid closer. For us, the
album feels like a real masterpiece, conjuring a spectrum of intimate and
emotive moods, feelings and nostalgia-tinged memories that float into the
mind, like the settling fog in the valley on a crisp winters morning |

Pressed on the classic "LT Records" centres, Nice Archive Traxx
Vol. 1 is a lesson in raw, hissing house from the Concrete resident and one
of France's finest new talents. Stronger Than Me has been bothering mixes
& radio for a good year now and takes pride of place on the A1. Skipped
snares, wailing sax and clear vocal hits slot together around an NY house
core. You Don't Really Want Me heats up the production just that bit more on
the grill and adds in some serious Chi-town acidic flavour. 303's running
riot from the midway. On the B, Raw Thoughts takes a similarly blown-out
production sensibility and drives it straight into laid-back electro
territory. Elements of boogie spliced with sultry synth soloing and glacial
pad ripples. Ice cream parlour chill jams. Rounding out the EP are Acid City
- a soulful deep house number overrun with grumpy, growling acid lines - and
hyper beat-snippet You Do - a breaks-y beat track showcasing the other side

& Obscure Shape are back with their second EP for 2023, following their
debut release on their mothership label From Another Mind. The German duo's
latest release, 'Basic Instinct', is a collection of five dancefloor anthems
that provide the perfect soundtrack for any moment in a set. The EP features
their signature die-cut cover and includes a digital bonus track. 'Basic
Instinct' is the 12th installment of their Mutual Rytm label and showcases
the pair's exceptional production skills and innovative approach to
electronic music, with a mix of old and new school flavors, vivid drum
programming, organic percussion and captivating melodic elements. The A-side
kicks off with their signature track 'Eraser', which blends crisp drums with
warm sub-bass and piercing synth stabs. "Dancer in the Dark" takes
a deeper dive into late-night territory, combining lush dub-influenced synths
with a rolling acid bassline. "Disturbing Behaviour" closes the
A-side and shows why the 303 has become an iconic tool for producers. Despite
the sirens dominating around the breakdowns, the simple two-tone acid stab is
the defining element of the track, complemented by amen-break leaning drums
that hint at a UK rave direction. The B-side goes in a different direction,
with 'Memories of Nobody' taking a filtered and less aggressive approach, as
echoing dub pads gather around a growling bassline and kick drum combination,
topped off by brushed hats. The EP concludes with 'The Last Seduction', a
track that reveals the full organic breadth of the previously hinted at Amen
break. The fusion of said amen break with the warmth and familiarity of
waxing and waning pads is reminiscent of the golden days of electronic music.
With its expertly crafted soundscapes and diverse range of styles, 'Basic
Instinct' is yet another stunning release from SHDW & Obscure Shape, to
be released on 5 May 2023 |
