When
picturing the German techno scene, one likely imagines the concrete monoliths
of its capital city Berlin rather than the vineyards and valleys of the
enchanting city of Stuttgart in the southwest. But small cities lack the
oversaturation and noise of the metropolis, allowing them to develop their
own inspired and distinctive subcultural visions. Stuttgart’s David Löhlein
exemplifies this potential, manifesting a singular style of sight and sound
through his Vision Ektase project and residency at Lehmann Club. Now,
Löhlein’s warm-blooded techno is slinking, slithering and seducing its way
through BNR, with the upcoming Hotel Pool EP release. There’s no hesitation
before plunging into the EP’s titular track, with its rushing fingered
basslines and rolling polyrhythms. Löhlein cites solo travels in Columbia as
the source of his Latin influences, and one hears them throughout “Hotel
Pool” in vocal and percussive samples. Elements more commonly found in Latin
and tribal house feel uncommonly fresh once Löhlein recontextualizes them
within a 144 bpm techno foundation. The words “groovy” and “sexy” are usually
reserved for the stuff of Buddha Bar compilations, but “Hotel Pool” is
exhilarating because it serves both of the former and none of the latter. A
stream of hedonism flows beneath all of the four-tracker, but if the opener
is erotic, A2 “La Piscina” is psychedelic. The bass flutters like a mescaline
come-up, as infinite loops of chattering voices and deep bamboo pipe notes
mesmerize. Again, Löhlein takes certain genre tropes - in this case from
psytrance - and transposes them through his own stylistic signature with
thrilling results. Ask Löhlein if he likes psytrance and the answer might be
“Yes, when it’s techno.” Leading the flip, “Cuando Vengas” heats up around a
dark and sticky loop of ambiguous, organic origin. Here Löhlein’s masterful
sample and drum programming is clearly on display, with vocal chops and
subtle rhythmic variations leading the dancefloor to shivering bliss. The EP
closes with “I Just Want,” a sparse, cold, and bitcrushed stalker of a track
that seems to answer Baudrillard’s famed question “What are you doing after
the orgy?” That the Hotel Pool EP’s wild romp ends in the Berlin oeuvre
perhaps proves the city’s primacy in the German techno scene, but after a few
listens one begins to wonder what rare pleasures they’ve been missing in

long-awaited debut Muscut's release of Chillera’s band bass player Ganna
Bryzhata — an Odesa-based sound artist. An ambient LP is a smoothy-flow
sub-nautical journey with the songs of Black sea sirens glowing under the
moon. Ganna Bryzhata’s ethereal, shape-shifting electroacoustic experiments

Fortunately Bryozone is not singing and not going in a dream-pop direction –
this is a non-obvious, evocative, in a way visual, and narrative soundtrack
to the journey to the Black Sea coast. Or elsewhere in the middle of hot

Svitlana
Okhrimenko (artist name: Svitlana Nianio) is a Ukrainian artist, musician,
and signer. She is one of the most prominent representatives of the
independent music scene of Kyiv in the late 1980s — early 90s. She has
repeatedly recorded and performed in collaboration with other musicians and
bands, such as Oleksandr Yurchenko, Sugar White Death (Cukor Bila Smert’),
Ivanov Down, GeeNerve & Taran, and Blemish. Svitlana still performs and
publishes new recordings today. “Transilvania Smile” is one of the first solo
works recorded in 1994. During this time, Svitlana repeatedly visited
Germany, where she had the experience of playing in parks and on the streets,
gathering contacts of the local art scene. Her cooperation with the
international choreographic group Pentamonia, based in Cologne and consisting
of several girls who performed in theaters, took part in various
performances, and were engaged in music. They met in the 1990s during joint
performances with "Sugar-White Death." After that, they
corresponded, and the idea of doing something together arose. Svitlana
attended several of their performances, which inspired her to write music for
a new project, and the band members helped to realize their creative ideas.
Later, they started rehearsing together. The name “Transilvania Smile” was
invented by the project participants, and it symbolized the mold on the
mirror and the reflection of a smiling vampire. However, shortly before the
premiere, they changed it to “Firefox”, as the participants actively used
flashlights and the play of light and shadows in the scenography. The
premiere occurred in the local Urania theater, previously a gallery. Isabel
Bartensein directed the choreography, and Svitlana played, sang, and
improvised. She said it was an excellent experience for her and the band.
Besides Cologne, they also performed in Aachen. Later, Michael Springer
offered Svitlana to record this material in his "Phantom" studio.
They had already worked together and recorded music for their project
(Svitlana Okhrimenko / Phanton). Michael was also interested in the Ukrainian
independent scene and participated in the creation of several compilations
that featured bands from Kyiv and Kharkiv. Svetlana played the piano and harmonium
in the studio and also sang. After the recording, the material was never
released in its entirety. Two compositions appeared on the cassette
compilation “Shovaisia” (Hide) in 1995, some episodes were re-recorded for
the “Kytytsi” album in 1999, but for a long time, the full version of this
recording remained practically unknown to listeners and was kept in
Svitlana's and Michael’s archives |

Amotik
recruits Norway's Kameliia and Dallas-based Decoder for the third split EP on
his increasingly essential AMTK+
label. Kameliia's hypnotic and atmospheric music has appeared on the likes of
Overbalance and Unterwegs, where she has previously flexed her sophisticated
take on sound design and heady soundscapes with driving and physical grooves.
Decoder recently started his new Toca label with Jay York and has previously
appeared on labels like Subsist, Float and Jeff Mills' legendary Axis.
Kameliia kicks off with the heavy and thumping 'Beyond', combining forceful
drums and a slow, mystical synth lead that encourages you to follow it deep
into the night. '8-12' is another perfect fusion of the head and body with
supple percussion smeared with balmy and cosmic chords for a classy and
immersive cut. Decoder opens the B-side with 'Kalpavriksha', a twitchy and
paranoid cut laced with bleeps and pulses, crafting a futuristic soundscape
that grows ever more intense. 'Swayambhu' brings experimental shades with its
tightly interlaced drums and synths beneath an unsettling synth line that
whistles like a storm. Closing the release is the excellent 'Velinattu,' a
buoyant track that's warm and full of delicate percussive layers |

that is for a reason: Blake was part of the first wave of Detroit techno
artists and dis and contributed to the techno movement from the mid 80s.
Tracks like "When a dream becomes U" or "Our love" are
milestones of electronic music, his style, which he calls "Poetry and
Rhythm" is distinctive. For Killekill House Trax he the A-side darker
and more chicago-oriented with its rhythmical focus and the punchy kick, the
B-side more Detroit-ish with its uplifting chords. Timeless! |

Maniacal
Laughter quickly gives way to a non-stop onslaught of irresistible
electronics and a ceaseless, pounding groove. Boom! You are embedded in
Maedon's world. Dark and futuristic, her album "Now I have Become
Death" is another worthy addition to the Sonic Groove catalogue. This is
music that works the body and captures the mind. It's her 3rd release for the
imprint, following up 2020's "Escape to Berlin" and 2019's
"Against His Will" EP. Maedon crafts some very melodic jams, with
refreshing song structure and storytelling trips achieved through excellent
sample work and programming progress. Make no mistake, this is fighting
music. It's blazing hard, with grueling energy, and a flair for the dramatic.
Maedon likes relevant content, as tracks like "Rave-Act Never
Forget" expose pathetic pledges from poser politicians who have dared to
protest against the dance music scene in their past. You have been exposed
Biden. The madness continues with the menacing "Destroyer of
Worlds", a massive rave jam with otherworldly synths based around the
words of a certain man's famously guilty post-atomic quote from the Hindu
scripture known as the Bhagavad Gita. It's a reminder of your sins,
Oppenheimer. The selection continues to concoct clever experiments with
pressure and feels at times like riding a roller coaster thru outer space
"Destroy the Status Quo" with subtly pitch-shifting metallic highs
and ravey tone-work captivates the mind as gravity drops jerk the body into
uncontrollable motion. "Rudersdorf Trip" is a sick adventure into

tracks stand out; a solid efort from start to fnish. It serves as a lesson in
production for her peers. She enjoys the process, creating a chance for all

delicately enough with calming drums before thundering amens take control of
your experience, expertly programmed with that inimitable analogue heft many
producers strive for, but few perfect. Deep sub bass complements the beats as
a gentle melody takes shape, enriched with charming piano keys and a rousing,
echoing vocal sample - all of which ensure Infinity will repeat on you like
the classics that inspired it. A2 - 2097: Addictive jungle-laced drums and
familiar effects kickstart 2097, a deeply atmospheric track that transports
the listener beyond the speakers to lands afar. A heavy, consistent bassline
rumbles along to mesmerising horns. ASC carves our journey through the track
showcasing subtle beat edits and impeccable filtering techniques to mix
things up, retaining that old school feel with the modern production
standards we have come to expect from him. AA1 - What Lies Beneath: Something
a bit different here, What Lies Beneath can be a DJ tool or an armchair
experience in one. Immediately injected with intrigue and curiosity, the
plinky melody dances around the eerie backdrop as if we are indeed exploring
ghostly, uncharted depths. The jittery beat structure is consistently
interesting, sprinkled with a cacophony of effects to elevate the
composition, creating something quite unique. AA2 - Rainforest: Closing out
the EP we have Rainforest, immediately living up to it's name with a splash
of understated tropical backdrops combining fluidly to take you straight to
the Amazon. Stabbing, harsh snares dominate the beats in the mix either side
of the breakdown, jumping maniacally over the buried sub bass below to a
typically detailed rhythm, demonstrating ASC's diverse repertoire once again.

four-piece ECHT! are set to release their sophomore album 'Sink-Along' on the
5th May via the groove-obsessed Sdban Ultra label. Receiving critical acclaim
from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Mixmag for their
debut release 'INWANE' (2021), ECHT! takes the best of Jonwayne, DJ Rashad, J
Dilla, Ivy Lab, Tsuruda and Aphex Twin, resulting in an unrivalled sound. In
a society geared almost exclusively toward the technological, ECHT! forges a
different path, one that instead replaces the mechanical with the human. At
the heart of their creative process made up of actual skin and bone, the
influences of trap, bass music, jazz and hip-hop burst forth through their
expert playing of instruments. 'Sink-Along' showcases a rawer and more
straight-forward approach than their debut. Whether on the bass-heavy opener
'Glide' or the beat-to-beat sounds of 'Cheesecake' and 'Bryan Brains', ECHT!
confirms its taste for deep, dark beats pushed to the extreme. No one can
remain indifferent. A more luminous universe is brought to the fore on the
introspective 'Vault-A' and 'Dawn In Duden' but at the core of 'Sink-Along',
the common denominator is a warm and organic groove, evident on the inventive
'Rouf-rouf' and 'Mtwk part2'. "For this album we wanted to make strong
and opposite emotions coexist: a dark and intense apocalyptic tendency, and a
life and dance impulse that runs through everything. A paradox that is reflected
in the wordplay of the title 'Sink-Along'." Releasing their debut EP
'DOUF' in 2019, the following year, ECHT! finished third in Red Bull
Elektropedia's 'Fresh on The Scene' category and the EP was nominated for
'Best EP'. ECHT! released three sublime live studio sessions titled the
BREWmixes in 2021, which received support from tastemakers including LEFTO,
Worldwide FM and Belgian national radio station Studio Brussel (StuBru).
Their debut album 'INWANE' soon followed. Echt means 'vrai de vrai' - 'true'
or 'real' in brusseleir (Brabantian dialect of Brussels). The name is a
direct reference to the fact that their sound transmission is 'real',
performed with conventional musical instruments as opposed to computer music
which the production might suggest. It also relates to the fact that none of
the members of the band are originally from Brussels - bassist Federico
Pecoraro is from Italy, keyboardist Dorian Dumont is from France and drummer
Martin Méreau and guitarist Florent Jeunieaux are both from the Mons region
on Belgium |

Originally released in 1976, this
latter-day psychedelic cult classic was the brainchild of the enigmatic Phil
Pearlman, also responsible for rarities by Beat Of The Earth and Electronic
Hole. Bearing distinct traces of Neil Young's and the Grateful Dead's music,
it's a mellow collection of deceptively simple songs that seem to have
emanated from the Californian desert itself. Back in the day this would be
called 'rural psychedelia', nowadays 'cosmic Americana' probably sounds more
'fashionable'! |

Ellen Allien joins forces with
Italian synth wave band Ash Code for a formidable collaborative project.
Across three tracks they merge their creative energy to produce the fearsome
EP - 'Dance and Kill’. The three track EP represents a perfect marriage of
two potent and distinctive sounds, with both acts firing on all cylinders.
Across the EP eerie vocal clips, vigorous percussion, stomping bass,
distorted vocals, and ominous instrumentation demonstrate the parallels
between these sounds. Opening track ‘Dance and Kill’ embodies this melding of
techno and cold wave elements. 'Shining On You' features Ellen's vocals and
thunderous drum programming, for a sombre yet irresistibly danceable track.
Finally ‘Everything Collapses’ unleashes vigorous percussion and a snarling
low end, lifted by a chorus of supernatural voices |

2023 repress - Tresor Records is
fortunate enough to be sitting on a catalogue of past releases that no other
label in electronic music would turn down. Three of the finest in this
collection were contributed by Surgeon; “Basictonalvocabulary”, “Balance” and
“Force + Form”, which all came out between 1997 and 1999. Surgeon’s
inimitable combination of Detroit techno and post-industrial sounds emanating
from his British homeland found its fullest expression in these masterful
trio of releases. Following the release of Surgeon's first album in 5 years
"Crash Recoil" earlier in 2023, Tresor Records have decided that
its high time to give these seminal albums another airing |
