Minor
Science aka UK-born, Berlin-based musician Angus Finlayson pushes forward his
vision of ambient music as neither static vista or merely mood-setting
atmosphere, but rather a dynamic matrix of textures, sensations, and even
rhythms. He makes his Balmat debut with Absent Friends Vol. III, the third
installment in a shape-shifting series across a variety of formats and
platforms. The first two Absent Friends--a 2014 set for Blowing Up the
Workshop, and a 2017 cassette and web player for Whities (now AD93)--were
hybrid affairs, part DJ mix and part collage, mostly featuring music made by
other people. Then, in 2020-21, Finlayson developed the project into a live
show of his own material. Armed with hundreds of bespoke stems created in his
studio--idiosyncratic FX chains, feedback loops through cheap rack gear,
heavily post-processed field recordings, found voices, etc.--he would
improvise on four CDJs, mixer, FX, and live synths, extending techniques he
learned as a club DJ into a live context, accompanied by visuals by
Stockholm-based artist Paul Witherden. Absent Friends Vol. III is an album of
studio versions of the music developed for the live show. But in Minor
Science's world, even a category as simple as "studio versions" is
slightly opaque. "Most of these tracks weren't 'composed' in the
studio," Finlayson explains: "The sounds started out as stems and
source material for the live show, and might not have been intended to go
together--but then through performance, they settled into shapes that worked.
I then recreated those performances in the studio." That organic process
of ideation and realization might help explain the unusual coherence of the
album, in which sounds and textures flow seamlessly from one to the next,
sometimes seeming to stand still, and sometimes looping back. There are
virtually no melodies, few recognizable motifs or riffs, yet the eight-track
album nevertheless moves with a distinctive logic and a determined sense of
purpose, from the frozen-in-time shimmer of the opening
"Introduction" through the early cuts' studies of space and light;
from the seemingly autobiographical "Summer Diary" through the
rushing trance (yes, trance) arpeggios of "Contingency" and on to
the dulcet denouement of the closing "Gather Your Party (Dispersed
Mix)." |

Discos
Perdidos - which translates as Lost Records - is a new series started by
Lisbon label Paraiso, dedicated entirely to releasing archival music that,
for a reason or another, never saw the light of day. The first outing on this
adventure into the unknown is by none other than the legendary portugal-born,
london-based techno instigator The Advent aka Cisco Ferreira. The three
tracks on this EP were written in 1998 and were meant to be released on a
label that another Portuguese techno legend - Jiggy - meant to start running,
but other projects got in the way. Fast forward to early 2023, Jiggy showed
the Paraiso crew the DATs containing these gems - immediately entrancing -
and both him and The Advent agreed to give Discos Perdidos the honours of putting
them out. Titled Shiolas, this three-tracker opens with 'Don't Do It', a
relentless techno banger that, albeit its four to the floor drum pattern,
feels swingy thanks to cleverly programmed percussion and claps. A concise
but extremely effective bassline and synth lead guides the energetic smasher,
with cut-up vocals, timely placed filters and hi hats giving it a final
shimmer. It's followed by the Piano Mix, with an equally strong and raw
arrangement and a new element - an alien, sound-sculpted piano that gives it
an extra sense of urgency. The closing track 'Jacker' has more abstract
leanings, although similarly dancefloor-ready, featuring an off-kilter yet
driving conversation between stabs and bells in a display of expertly crafted
dubby yet visceral sound design. A piece of dance music history is recovered
- techno is now a story told more accurately |

Brussels-based
power trio Don Kapot are set to release their rousing new album 'I Love
Tempo' on the 15th of September via W.E.R.F. Records. A lifeboat of free
jazz, afrobeat and krautpunk sailed by Giotis Damianidis (bass), Viktor
Perdieus (baritone saxophone) and Jakob Warmenbol (drums), the album follows
the release of their critically acclaimed 2022 album 'Un Peu Live' recorded
with Dutch multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer Fulco Ottervanger,
and described by Bandcamp Daily as a 'very fun mix of modern jazz and
krautrock.' Don Kapot strike hard with their fourth album, mixed and
co-produced by Greg Saunier (Deerhoof). Using a wide range of instruments,
they evolve their sound into a solid complex rhythmic wave, shaken by
demented samples and punk attitude. From the vibrant, pounding rhythms of
opening track 'Me Pig' to the off-kilter, whimsical beats of 'Macarona' and
'Terryble,' Don Kapot integrate new instruments and sounds into their
repertoire, including keyboards and sampling. The groove remains a central
element to the sound as the trio deliver a palpable blend of high tension and
joyous energy where genres are demolished. Elsewhere, the funk-heavy
'Bernadette' allows the magical, freestyle sax work of Perdieus take centre
stage while 'Don Be No' is an urgent, flippant blast of vigour and zest
before the album title track 'I Love Tempo' is an exhilarating and hypnotic
journey that combines the freedom and verve of free jazz with the trance-like
zeal of artists such as Tony Allen, Fela Kuti and Kologbo. Releasing their
self-titled debut album in 2018 via Mr. Nakayasi Records, in 2021 they signed
to Flemish record label W.E.R.F. Records and have released three albums under
the label and have performed sold-out shows across Belgium and the
Netherlands. The players in Don Kapot also extend their musical adventures to
other projects. Damianidis leads Punk Kong and has performed with Akira
Sakata, Sakis Papadimitriou, Oghene Kologbo, Tony Allen, Baba Ani, Balasz
Pandi and Gonzalo Almeida among others. Warmenbol was a member of The
Unrevealed Society, Robbing Millions and M(h)ysteria. He also performs with
Ruth Tafebe & the Afrosoul Messengers (with Giotis), Under The Reefs
Orchestra and Monolithe Noir. Perdieus performs in Punk Kong and with
Pompelmoes and The Milk Factory and took part in Ifa y Xango, Laia Arkestra,

Up next on TRIP is berlin-based,
but boston native, soren jahan. for his debut on the label, nina signed 16
tracks that were conceived in 2016 following a simple concept: no samples.
all rhythms and sounds are synthesized and controlled with lfo modulations as
well as step sequencers. the result is a minimal masterpiece straddling the
line between danceable music and ambient. Soren got his start in boston in
2011 with the label supply records that he founded with john barera. since
coming to berlin in 2013, he has released a string of ep's on his own labels
supply, blank slate, ygrok / ssto as well as projects for the double r
amongst others. these days he's also active as an analog photographer and
printmaker in berlin's underground fetish scene. The 12" features

These sonic stories emerged from
a gathering of artists concerned with alternative uses of everyday objects,
subversive anti-aesthetics, sensual-absent poetry, moving optical discs, and
echoes of activities occurring in the Earth's orbit. It was a performative
celebration of entangled audio-visual events that enabled us to learn once
again how to tune in to a place: with our eyes, with our ears, with our
minds. While listening to the record, I remember what it sounded like in the
space. I remember monologues of chairs that were given voice, phones
eavesdropping and speaking back to us, cassettes falling on the floor
(intentionally): some visions unfolding in front of our very eyes and others
in our minds. Try to imagine all that these short pieces might still contain.
As Peter Fengler exclaims in his chorus: it will all work out. Just choose a

There was a certain curiosity
about Lewis Fautzi's next step with us. Despite his own personal style, we
couldn't imagine that he would choose to release a new atmospheric and
experimental album. The result is absolutely stunning. 'Manner of Death' was
produced during one of the worst moments of his life and the feelings he put
into it are not relatable for most of us but yet understandable. Besides all
this there aren't enough words we can write about it. All we can do is be
thankful for such a masterpiece! |

- Lunar Sunset: Aural Imbalance returns to Spatial with the first track of
the EP opening with a typically dreamy soundscape gently luring us to the
skies, an unforgettable melody chimes away as the layers of atmosphere
collate. Breakwork skills are on full show as crunchy drumloops give Lunar
Sunset some serious rhythm, and just wait until you hear the stunning
breakdown highlighting the impact of the mournful padwork which brings the
mix together. A2 - Moonfall: The rulebook goes out of the window early doors
for Aural Imbalance here as he opens Moonfall with a clean, tuned pattern of
Hot Pants breaks before gradually adding smooth pads & synths and some
superb sub bass. We are treated to some delicious ambient workflows later in
the track but make no mistake - the breaks are the star of the show here and
DJ's will love utilising the energy of the track in sets. AA1 - Point of
Origin: Starting with a punchy selection of brisk, clean-cut Apache breaks,
Point of Origin sees Aural Imbalance demonstrating his musical range with a
distinct electronic synthesizer style melody and full-bodied aquatic
backdrops which echo around the soundscape like playful whales enjoying a
vast lagoon. It's another reminder that Spatial is playing host to one of the
true talents of atmospheric drum & bass - output like this being both
ambient and weighty in harmony. AA2 - Near-Earth Object: Our finale track is
a special one. Opening with a luscious dreamscape of mellowed-out pads and
effects, seriously heavy sub bass then takes over to test your speakers
before the drop, which sees addictive, detailed analogue breakbeats
enrapturing the listener with a thickly detailed drum pattern aimed squarely
at the dancefloor. This one is a real mover and continues Aural Imbalance's

the opening strains of the politico title-track to the countrified pedal
steel guitar on 'Man With A Mission,@ from the anti/establishment anthem
@American Jesus', to the heart rending ballad 'Struck A Nerve', Bad
Religion's Recipe For Hate is by far their most eclectic album, and one that
never ceases to stir up controversy among fans. Graffin, a seething

band that started in Kyushu, Japan. They released a few records

Los Angeles based alto saxophonist named Vi (Elvira) Redd, a blues infected
player, singer and educator who since the early 50's has performed with many
Jazz greats like Dexter Gordon, Max Roach, Roland Kirk, Count Basie and
others. Originally released in 1962, 'Bird Call' was Redd's debut album, a
hard swinging studio session featuring a top class band that included pianist
Russ Freeman, Leroy Vinnegar or Bob Whitlock on bass, guitarist Herb Ellis,
trumpeter Carmell Jones, vibraphonist Roy Ayers and her then-husband, Richie

"Car Enthusiasts come out . ÿI had just ÿreturned to Australia - my home
away from home- from our first Japanese tour . Life was good . I made this
tape for our Aussie agent of that time , Stephen Pavlovic . I am forever
ÿgrateful to this man for introducing ÿme to Australia and a grand gang ÿof
australians! This ÿLP documents a lovely lull in the action. a Sunday night
into morning ÿto collect myself and my songs . The songs that would be on our
next album . some of these never made it and the "Into Your Arms "
I did here is better than the one on the album ( i like it anyway ) So sit
back, snort some no doze and listen for the tunes, the sea ,the tape hiss (
ahhh ) , the cars , the birds the trucks , and the killer motorcycle at the

AND PRODUCED BY DAVE GROHL The highly influential Santa Cruz hardcore legend:
'BL'AST!' formed in 1982 and released its first album, The Power of
Expression, in 1985. Their debut album completely blew everyone away and
would go onto be one of the "must- have"/classic hardcore albums
from the 80s'. 'BL'AST!' was beyond intense and continually pushing the
boundaries of hardcore with their advanced musicianship and overall ability
to completely explode during live performances. This overwhelming power
caught the attention of SST records who released the bands' 2nd album:
"It's In My Blood" in 1987. Their 3rd album Take The Manic Ride,
was released in 1989. As always 'BL'AST!' was reaching to get heavier and as
manic as possible and this intense perseverance became an influence for many
bands to come. Shortly after the release of Take The Manic Ride the band
broke up and their story was buried by time and dust....UNTIL NOW! Earlier
this year 'BL'AST!' guitarist: Mike Neider contacted Southern Lord with news
that he had found some mysterious old 'BL'AST!' master tapes in a abandoned
storage locker. They were sent out to a studio to be baked as the tapes
quality had deteriorated ...they were 25 years old after all! Once they had been
baked and the audio information had been transferred digitally it was time to
find out just what was on these mysterious tapes! Southern Lord contacted
long time 'BL'AST!' fiend Dave Grohl about mixing this recording and his
response was an enthusiastic: "FUCK YEAH! , LETS DO THIS"! Whilst
inside Grohls' famous 606 studios and with the Neve console featured in the
recent Grohl produced documentary: "Sound City", we discovered a
completely unheard, unreleased 'BL'AST!' recording session from the mid-80s!
The band is absolutely on fire on this recording! The lineup of the band at
the time of the recording included second guitarist William Duvall (Neon
Christ) who had moved from his hometown of Atlanta out to Santa Cruz on a tip
from mutual friends: Corrosion of Conformity to join the band. Interestingly
and completely unrelated is that William Duvall is now the vocalist for Alice
in Chains! Unfortunately his tenure with 'BL'AST!' was short-lived and no
recordings from that lineup were ever released. From the thunderous bass
intro of "Only Time Will Tell" to the apocalyptic warnings of
"Its In My Blood" the album completely rips and rages from start to
finish. All parties involved were completely amazed at how vibrant, unique
and new the material sounded. "Blood" will be a crucial purchase
for any current Hardcore fiend as well as all old fart punker/hardcore folks

of the most versatile voices in the history of country music. His first
releases in the mid-50's already profiled him as a magnificent singer and

this one's a goodun. Japanese grindcore icon Eri Fuzz-Kristiansen, aka
Viviankrist, keeps the curveballs coming on Diagonal with her bloodied
mastication of charred noise and rhythmic electronics, following up the
label's acclaimed recent sides by Sote and Not Waving/Jim O'Rourke. It's an
intense howl of a record that comes highly recommended if yr into anything
from Alberich/Prurient to Aphex Twin's Ventolin, Pan Sonic to Kali Malone.
'Cross-Modulation' is a brutal testament to the acridly personalised sound
that Viviankrist has explored solo since 1995 in Tokyo, when she performed
vocals, sax and SP-202 sampler in her first industrial/noise unit. 23 years
later her music is still sorely raw, yet riddled with a new found poignance
and atmospheric unease that places her music sometimes as close to Kali
Malone's see-sawing dissonance as the power electronics of Pan Sonic or the
possessed pulses of Conrad Schnitzler and Merzbow. Since the demise of Eri's
main project Gallhammer at the start of this decade, when she moved from
Tokyo to Oslo (home of her husband and bandmate in Sehnsucht, Maniac - also
former vocalist for BM legends Mayhem), she returned to her early Viviankrist
alias from 2017 as a place to express her primitivist-futurist urges, resulting
a trio of CDs including the vicious solo strike of 'Morgenrøde' for Cold
Spring. Now on 'Cross-Modulation' she intuitively tempers that album's
phosphorous burn with a deadly, incisive application of what Black
Metal/Techno pioneer Black Mecha terms "mentation electronics."
Alloying avant-metal with rhythmic noise, ambient techno and mind-bending
drone to a metallurgic tang, 'Cross-Modulation' serves a dense flux of
energies in seven parts, piercing a path thru maelstrom electronics in
'Eleventh' to churn up grizzled Vainio-esque rhythms in 'Blue Iron', while
the tenderly bruised ambience of 'Midnight Sun' provides a bittersweet
palette cleanser for the tart technoid prang of 'Insects', a bout of slow
gripping psychedelia in 'Out of Body', and the rugged North European
pastoralism of 'Behind Mirror.' Blinder |

FNUSSJEN is the brainchild of
drummer / percussionist Nicolas Chkifi. In this band he brought together some
extraordinary musicians in an unusual lineup: harpist Ann Eysermans,
violinist Ananta Roosens, pianist Christian Mendoza and himself on drums. Their
music, with meditative character, sometimes folkloric as well as
contemporary, is a sequence of miniature compositions written by Nicolas
