Funk
The System! The recipe is simple: Dig deep, listen to your heart, record
everything you got on a dusty old desktop computer, leave it to simmer for
the time of a pandemic, and if it's still fresh, serve it up on the finest
plate of black wax! This collaboration started in Dusseldorf in the year
2018. Locked up for a week in the Flanger Studios, Wolf Muller and Credit 00
recorded everything: from the jaw harp to smartphone apps, chopping up GDR
Jazz breaks and squeezing the Funk out of every synthesizer and drum machine
at hand. You will hear the open mindedness towards all sorts of musical
influences from the first note. Each of the five tracks showcases a wild mix
of flavours: Disco Reggae, B-Girl Breakbeats, Protest Folk, Subway Funk,
Tabla Rhythms, you name it... they'll take it and shake it! It is obvious
these two got sonically socialized and educated by the multiculturalism of
Hip-Hop in their early days. After the first Recording Session, the tracks
fermented for some time until they were cracked open again. This time in
Leipzig at Credit 00's Westend Workshop. That's also where Rizmi from
Birmingham joined the team and lent her voice to the title track. She
reinterpreted the lyrics of the obscure German 1980s Workers' Rock Song, that
Wolf digged out for the Intro Skit of ,,Funk The System". A long time in
the making, Rat Life is very happy to finally publish this EP! |

is the new album from 25 years old Alfie Firmin. Containing 10 new original
songs, 'Absentee' is Alfie's 4th full-length album since 2018 (three as a

been cleaned up and expanded to include the 5 extra tracks added which were
missing from the original release..Although they performed 'Surfin Bird' at

Hailing from the former northern
mining town of Wigan, between Manchester and Liverpool, the short-lived
Electro Hippies were a band like no other, saluted as icons of crust punk and
proto-grindcore. Following some cassette demos, a shared LP with Newcastle's
Generic and a Peel session, debut LP The Only Good Punk.Is A Dead One
surfaced on Peaceville with twenty songs, all clocking in at under two
minutes (around half being less than 60 seconds). Highly political, deeply
ironic, and with a snatch of Black Sabbath in the mix, The Only Good Punk is
the band at their blistering best, the peak that preceded their ultimate

up on Rocky Hill is a limited edition, vinyl only white label, featuring 2
edits licensed from Terrestrial Funk and Darone Sassounian's compilation from
2021, and two original tracks from LA - based DJ and producer, Lara
Sarkissian. The A side (Silk Road Side), features two previous exclusives
from Darone's compilation on Terrestrial Funk titled, 'Silk Road: Journey of
the Armenian Diaspora (1971 - 1982)'. The two edits on the A side were only
available digitally, on CD, and Cassette formats. A1 features an edit of
Marten Yorgantz's "Ammenain Serdov [De Tout Coeur]" from NY-based
DJ duo, Fundido. A2 features an edit of Jozeph Sefian's "Karoun E
Yegel" from Darone Sassounian. The B Side (Lara Sarkissian Side),
features two original tracks sampling duduk (Armenian woodwind), songs -
named as Lezginka Dance Scene and Ojakhum Nightmare. The tracks are reworks
of the originals from 2016 - 2017, when Sarkissian began the creation of her
own unique process of synthesizing duduk as percussion, bass and voice. Both
tracks have been used in her early live sets from 2017 - 2018. They're

Mad
Professor, also known as Neil Fraser to his friends is renowned worldwide for
his groundbreaking dub recordings, captivating live sets showcasing the
creativity of dub sound engineers, and his collaborations with both reggae
and non-reggae artists alike such as Lee Scratch Perry, Jah Shaka, Sade, The
Orb, Massive Attack, Grace Jones and many more. Above all, he is celebrated
for his prolific output in the genres of Dub, Lovers Rock, Reggae and more
through his own Ariwa label and south London recording studio boasting an
impressive catalog of over 300 releases, among other notable achievements. A
few years back, we stumbled upon this outstanding Lovers Rock and Dub album
which had a very unique raw sound and felt like a whole experience when
listened to from start to finish. Alternate versions of the same tracks with
different performers in varying styles, tape rewinds, it had us all wonder
why it hadn’t gained wider recognition amongst Mad Professor's other
releases. When we finally had the pleasure of meeting Neil at his recording
studio, he revealed that this album was one of his earliest works. It was
born out of a birthday gift from his wife—a four-track recorder that inspired
him to venture into music-making after years of repairing and building
electronics and audio equipment. When we asked him if he would be making
music if not for that gift, he confessed that it was highly unlikely (!) Mad
Professor further explained that this album, originally released in 1984, is
a compilation of tracks recorded between 1979 and 1981, representing the
nascent stages of his recording and production career, when the idea of
establishing a studio and the Ariwa label were just beginning to take shape.
He set up all his gear, including his first homemade four-track mixing desk,
in the front room of his house in South London. With no prior studio
experience, he positioned microphones where he thought they should fit and
invited local musicians to collaborate. Errol Sly, Ranking Ann, Sergeant
Pepper, Deborah Glasgow, Victor Cross, Sister Audrey, his backing band the
Sane Inmates and a host of other talented local artists, some of whom would
go on to become stalwarts in their respective genres, all contributed to this
album, capturing the raw essence of Mad Professor and Ariwa's early sound |

is fundamentally modern. The coldness of the machine laid bare, a human
attempt to express through circuits and wiring. Despite adhering to specific
codes and norms, it is a sound that refuses to be pigeonholed. It is with
this in mind that Shipwrec has collected a wealth of international talent to
showcase their own vision of this bracing style. Serge Geyzel incises from
the needle drop, the acid blistered "Still There" is sliced and
quartered by scissoring snares. Endfest changes the trajectory with the
modular warmth of "La Chouffe" before the lines change and Manasyt
delivers the darkened angles and punishing percussion of "Row
Hammer." Andrew Red Hand maintains the shadowy synthlines of his
predecessor, industrial undertones bubbling to the surface in
distortion-soaked aggression. The mood shifts with Alpha Visitor. Crystalline
chords are punctured by crisp drum patterns, stabbing keys and broad arcs
unveil a world of sci-fi inspirations. The finale comes from Jauzas the
Shining. Broad sweeps introduce "Shemale" before dripping drums are

On
March 26, 2015, a surprising announcement sent shockwaves through the Belgian
music scene. Noémie Wolfs declared her departure from Hooverphonic, the band
she had fronted as the lead singer for over five years. She described it as
the end of an incredible chapter in her life and expressed her desire to
forge her own musical path, which she did by releasing her critically
acclaimed debut album "Hunt You" a year later. In February 2020,
the long-anticipated second solo album by Noémie arrived, titled "Lonely
Boy's Paradise," brimming with melancholic hues. Taking her time to
craft and record this album, Noémie delivered a collection of songs that
resonated even more deeply with her. At the production helm was Yello
Staelens (also known as Yong Yello). With "Lonely Boy's Paradise,"
her confidence grew, allowing her to embrace risk and unconventional ideas.
However, the international lockdown soon threw a spanner in the works, as the
society shut down a day after her celebrated sold-out release show at the
Ancienne Belgique. Rather than sit by, she therefore retreated to her home
studio to work on new music. Making music from the heart has always been in
the DNA of Belgian singer Noémie Wolfs and yet this time it is a tad
different as she's gearing up to release her third album, "Wild At
Heart," in November. This time around, she joined forces again with her
partner in crime, Simon Casier (of Balthazar and Zimmerman), to write and
produce the album in their home studio. Despite being in the business for
years, the upcoming project also immediately presented a challenge for her
because this time she was involved both as a writer, but more importantly as
a producer, giving the album an even more personal touch. Everything was done
from an emotion or a vision, you notice and hear the love for enchanting
arrangements immediately. The ten tracks on "Wild At Heart" promise
a distinct sound, enriched with meticulous attention to detail. The melodies
are interwoven with dreamy, melancholic strings and an array of synths,
revealing a new facet of Noémie's musical evolution. The new sound of Noémie
evolved from a hip-hop-oriented use of samples on her second album
"Lonely Boys Paradise" to a more electronic approach, where
danceable beats with analog synths join forces with big orchestrated strings
to capture the different facets of a love story. "Strings are actually
very hopeful or often form a warm blanket for many people, but can also be very
frightening, oppressive, dark, and sad. It might even be my favourite
instrument, which is why I definitely wanted to use them on this album.
Sometimes you can even hear 42 violins at the same time, with which we wanted
to capture the grandeur of Hollywood," she says about including strings.
The upcoming album is not a sonic continuation of her previous albums, but a
deliberate exploration of what has always inspired her. "Wild At
Heart" tells the story of two lovers who cannot live with each other,
but also cannot live without each other |

The
third and final sampler takes no prisoners and starts with THE hit of the
year 2008: 'Toca Me' (Inpetto 2008 Remix) by Fragma, played by absolutely any
DJ worth his or her salt in that era, including a certain DJ Tiësto who made
it one of his favourites of that year. Linking this Dutch connection up
nicely is 'Solid Session', by Format aka Orlando Voorn, a true techno and
house master of the 90's who is one the few Europeans fully adopted by the
techno pioneers of Detroit. The B side has legendary written all over it with
the beast that is 'Tone' by the undisputed master of acid Emmanuel Top (also
known for 'Acid Phase', 'Turkish Bazar', etc.). 'Tone' is definitely one of
the greatest records of this music style, with Sven Väth making it his very last
track to close the 10th anniversary of the Omen in 1998, a legendary moment
for many German clubbers. 'Tone' is followed by a nice surprise on this
sampler in the shape of 'Zorgoonn' by Total Groove. This At The Villa classic
is the pearl of the early years of Gregory Dewindt, a true giant of our scene
who also collaborated with DJ master Phi Phi on the classic 'Jesus Trip'. On
the C Side we find another 'Made in Belgium' hit with 'Monotone' by Monotone
feat. L.A. Work, a timeless and super effective classic that's impossible NOT
to play! 'Monotone' is followed by a genuine beauty in the pure state of
trance, one of the classics of the Yeti Records label, the magnificent 'Pure'
by Rebirth, bringing us almost 12 minutes of pure emotional pleasure. And
finally on the D Side we keep the quality very high with 'My Lexicon' another
masterpiece by Sander Kleinenberg and a true gem of progressive house played
and compiled at the time by Sasha & John Digweed, which says a lot!
Concluding this extraordinary series of samplers what could be better than a
legendary title composed by the God of trance himself under his alias West
& Storm? 'Moose' was indeed one of Tiësto's projects and became one of
the most emblematic records of Extreme on Mondays. One for the real trance
heads who will be over the moon to see this one reappear here! |

Ever
amazed by the external world and its natural surroundings, Belgian producer
Dijf Sanders has a habit of turning himself towards the unknown for
inspiration. After praised albums based on field trips to Indonesia (Java,
2017) and Nepal (Puja, 2020) he found himself challenged by the traditional
chants from Georgia. Diving deep into its sounds, people and heritage with
open eyes and ears, he traveled to the Eurasian land in the South Caucasus in
2022. The field recordings and impressions of this journey make the blueprint
for new, meticulously crafted compositions that ripened in his studio and
transcend its original source material in time and space. SUPRA offers nine
diverse explorations ranging from spaced-out folk, ethereal trance, ambient
with a melodic sense of drama and lush electronica channeling 90's IDM energy
fields. Bound by dynamic depth in sound design, this is electronic music with
a heavy heart - for all tracks share a primal sense of nostalgia in which
traditional music from the Georgian motherland baths. From a pastoral love
song about a buffalo (Mingrelian Song) or a ceremonial wedding hymn (What You
Give Away Is Yours, What You Don't Is Lost) to a lullaby (Bird's Milk)...
Georgia is a land of contemplative singing and its music scene today is still
dominated by modal vocalists and harmonic choirs with pride. With the help
and recording equipment of the Folklore State Centre (Tbilisi) and in
collaboration with Europalia Georgia festival, Dijf Sanders found
contemporary choirs willing to lend their voices for this project. Next to
these voice samples, the Georgian countryside and nature delivered source
material for more samples and textures as well. The name of the record refers

New Angels is the debut album by Swills & Phil Mills, a Dutch mixed
electronic duo in which vibrant talent and solid experience swirl together in
a hazy cloud. Ten cinematic ambient tracks that combine the imaginative power

jazz singer with Belgian roots Sophie Tassignon has built up a solid
reputation in Germany. She has a whole series of well-received records to her
credit, which not only showcase her musical versatility but also demonstrate
what an incredible vocalist and composer she is. Sophie is a musical
chameleon, constantly seeking to challenge and renew herself. When the
refugee crisis erupted and millions of Syrian refugees flocked to continental
Europe in search of a better life and safety, it resulted in a lot of fear
and opposition from the European population. The perception on refugees is
often very negative and creates divisions on the political field. When a
shelter was started up two blocks from Sophie's home in Berlin, she decided
to help and take care of some refugees. To get a better understanding on the
culture and stories of those people and to bridge with our culture, she
decided to study Arabic. Meanwhile, we are more than five years on, and not
only is she proficient in Arabic, but she has also gained a better
understanding of the culture and customs of the Arab community. Friendships
for life were formed. She decided to incorporate Arabic into her own musical
language - jazz - fusing two worlds. From this was born the project and the eponymous
record "Khyal. The word refers to the imagination and is literally
translated as "remembering and/or longing for something from the
(distant) past." With this project, Sophie especially wants to encourage
tolerance and acceptance towards people regardless of their cultural
background or religion and show how intercultural interaction can lead to
very beautiful and artistic results |

9, 2023 - Techno phenomenon Charlotte de Witte today announces her brand-new
EP “Power Of Thought”, out October 19 on her own KNTXT label. The trio begins
with the title track “Power Of Thought” - which immediately erupts into a
hypnotic techno beat interspersed with spoken mantras of mindfulness. This is
followed by “Pria”, a pulsating journey featuring hypnotic, mantra-like
vocals. The EP ends with ambient track “Abada”, punctuated with the
occasional drum and chanting vocals before it quickly strips away to silence.
“For ‘Power Of Thought’, I wanted to create an EP that touches deeper
emotions and captivating the meditative trance you have when you let go on
the dance floor,” says de Witte. “‘Pria’ has already brought me a lot of joy
over the last few months when I have played it during my sets. It offers a
moment of reflection and a chance to catch your breath during the rougher,
more peak time tracks I play. ‘Abada’ is a track that I really enjoyed
making. I discovered these magical chanting vocals and I just knew I wanted
to use them in a track. Though this track is maybe less playable in one of my
sets, I feel that Abada found its home on this EP and completes the ‘Power Of
Thought’ circle.” Best known for her “dark and stripped-back” brand of techno
and crossover to other sounds of the underground, Charlotte de Witte pushes
the boundaries of the electronic genre with music that has a distinct and
unforgettable sound that is uniquely her own. De Witte’s innovative ability
allows her to seamlessly blend genres and styles that have won her a
dedicated fan base and critical acclaim. “Power Of Thought” is the followup
EP to de Witte’s “Overdrive” EP, campaign and tour, which recently wrapped
with a Los Angeles takeover last month and included performances at Brooklyn
Mirage, Primavera Sound, Rock Werchter, Super Bock Super Rock, Lowlands and

Kabeaushé
once described their music as “the complete opposite” of the hardcore
leftfield electronic sounds of their then labelmates on Nyege Nyege Tapes.
And at the time that was true: the Kenyan polymath’s sound on their debut
album The Coming of Gaze was fiercely and single-mindedly focused towards
giddy pop rush, old school party hip hop upfulness, clean sounds, gentleness,
bounciness, positivity and JOY. Now, though, the lines are not quite so
clear. On their new material for Monkeytown, a little more rawness, weirdness
and rave energy seems to have soaked in. This isn’t just an effect of being
around Nyege Nyege peers, mind – partly it’s the experience of playing at
eclectic festivals all over the world and being exposed to all kinds of
radical music, but even more so, it’s the expression of Kabeaushé’s own wild
performance energy shining through via their alter ego “the Shé”. Anyone
who’s seen a Kabeaushé show will get it instantly. Their sets are far more

“Two
words are conjoined: hot pot and ottotto,” vocalist Kiki Hitomi tells us.
“Ottotto is the Japanese equivalent of “oops”, or said when someone nearly
falls over but manages to get their balance back: “it was dangerous but now
we are safe!” Combined with the heady brew of their musical styles (“like a
psychedelic Nabe hot pot: melting traditional Japanese Minyo with Jamaican
dancehall, footwork, dub, techno, tribal polyrhythms and Super Nintendo
soundtracks”), producer Shige Ishihara’s time in East Africa working with
local musicians, and the dayglo hallucinogen of the duo’s visual aesthetic,
WaqWaq Kingdom’s thumping, thrilling, irresistible third release is a unique
ride. Thematically - despite its ostensibly celebratory impact - Hot Pot
Totto addresses the world’s grave ecological state. “Now our earth is on the
way to catastrophe, as global warming becomes a serious problem through
humanity’s fault. We are on the edge,” Hitomi writes. “We need to get back on
the right track.” The ottotto of the album title refers to this experience -
the need to get back on track. However, this is not lamenting music: it is
fiercely defiant, full of colour and rapture, maintaining an optimism that we
can. Opening single “Hakke Yoi” ties treated voice, a floor-shaking beat, and
a dizzying, transforming colour palette to a heart-quickening BPM. The track
is named after the traditional cry of a sumo wrestling match, shouted by the
referee to maintain tempo, commonly translated as “put some spirit into it!”
The lyrics refer to humanity’s sacrifice of our planet for our own material
gains. Later, key track “Buri Buri” features Ugandan experimental dance
producer Catu Diosis and centres around the lyric “Turn disaster to our
advantage / good fortune and happiness will come to those who smile,”
offering not regret but encouragement and empowerment with its neon alien
sonics and relentless vibrancy. Kiki Hitomi was formerly a member of Ninja
Tune / Hyperdub’s King Midas Sound (along with The Bug and Roger Robinson),
and co-founded iconic Japanese dubstep-noise duo Dokkebi Q. She is also a
celebrated illustrator and designer, having created artwork for countless
record sleeves (including this one) and brands. Shigeru Ishihara - aka DJ
Scotch Egg - has been orbiting the dance music galaxy for over a decade,
releasing radiantly unpredictable solo records through Lightning Bolt’s Load
Records, as a member of Warp Records’ legendary Seefeel, and performing with
both projects across the world. He recently undertook a residency at the
Nyege Nyege Villa in Uganda, working with Phantom Limb alumnus MC Yallah.
More recently, Ishihara has been releasing music under the guise of Scotch
Rolex, collaborating with the likes of Shackleton, Swordman Kitala, Lord
Spikeheart and more. Hot Pot Totto is WaqWaq Kingdom’s third release for
Phantom Limb, following the rapturously received album Essaka Hoisa in 2019
and follow-up EP Dokkoisho in 2020. The band recently performed at the
label’s sold out 5th anniversary event in London, setting an ecstatic venue

songs, with four of them being quite lengthy and well-structured for the
dance floor, was entirely recorded in the United States by top-notch American
musicians. "Timeless", a fresh and lively expression of late 70s
soul music, was recorded at the Sundragon Studio in New York. This studio was
home to legendary bands such as Talking Heads and Ramones, as well as a few
'disco studio groups' like Andrea True Connection, Tony Valor Sound
Orchestra, and Camouflage, who recorded songs that later became considerable
hits. For this reason, it's believed that the positive outcome of the album
can be partially attributed to Ned Liben, an eclectic New York musician and
co-founder of the studio in the Flatiron district of Manhattan, served as an
exhaustive interlocutor for any artistic and technical needs. He was also the
arranger of "Rock Me With Your Love", the most significant song on
the album. Ned's successful mission was to capture the maximum timbral
fidelity of Robert Cotter's voice using appropriate recording techniques,
assisted by Michael George Ewing, a talented engineer who had previously
worked on similar projects with well-known artists like Carol Williams,
Maryann Farra & Satin Soul, Touch and Tony Valor. In fact, the piece
features original and melodious lines, coupled with an excellent steady
rhythm, spanning approximately 8 minutes and 30 seconds - in short, "a
delightful sound for every beat." This ensured that the performance of
the young singer-songwriter from New Jersey was faithfully reproduced without
neglecting the overall musical landscape. The other four songs, arranged by
Ben Lazzaroni with the same musicians as the first piece, are no exception.
Best Record also delivered on the promise to Robert's older brother, Karl
Potter, a powerful percussionist transplanted to Rome, for whom the roman
label produced "Sweet & Salty Cha-Cha-Cha" (12", 1986).
Robert Cotter, an artist about whom almost nothing has been written, is

There's
a new band in town! comforter2 is the new baby of Meetsysteem, Tammo
Hesselink & Marianne Noordzij. Born from a residency space in Arnhem as
they we're being snowed in over the pandemic, comforter2 is a band for club
heads and a club act for band heads. Sometimes two worlds meet - and through
this conversation love is found - that's a quote from the album > there's
a lyric sheet included with the cassette so you can read along. If you're
familiar with their solo projects you won't be surprised by the size of this
debut; 16 fresh, club-leaning, indie pop/rock tunes that we'll release on
cassette as well as digital. The tracks are formed by all members: Tammo's
knack for bass and rhythms, Meetsysteem's song- writing skills (the album is
sung in English) and together by Marianne's designs and voice, adding a touch
of blissful psychedelia. It's an honest, upfront album about the highs and
lows of modern life, seen through the eyes of a raver at their peak. It lends
their sound a sense of alluring melancholy, a beautifully bittersweet sense
of mood that stays with you long after the rhythms have finished. Like

Alarico
debuts on Klockworks with a flawless four tracker of classy yet gritty pure
driving techno. The Milan based DJ and producer Alarico started his journey
in 2015 with a style strongly shaped by the raw and forward-leaning sound of
90’s Techno. Known for fast paced rhythms and kinky grooves he left his
signature on labels such as Newrhytmic Records, Mutual Rytm, his imprint
Katana Records and he now continues to explore the depths and possibilities
of sound with his debut on Ben Klock’s Klockworks. Over four tracks he cycles
between classy, minimalistic effectiveness and rough edged grimy vibes
perfectly matching the label’s sound with his unique take on techno. The EP
kicks off with the raw stomping groove of ‘AF 97’ building up the tension to
be followed by the unstoppable rolling drift of ‘Chromo’, while on the
flip-side ‘Lost In Lima’ takes the listener on a sonic journey of frenetic
tribal rhythms and closing track ‘Nisba’ is a restless techno track
showcasing droning, hypnotic sound design and effortless elegance |

This
fourth EP in the Time Crystals series sees Troy returning to the label with a
low-key driver, carried by sharp percussion and filtered chords that keep the
attention locked in before Ukrainian Svarog and Ma-gooch take over,
delivering their signature sound - evolving pads, dreamy soundscapes -
resulting in yet another beautiful early hours piece of music. Wonderchild
Luigi Tozzi proves once again that he is a master at blending
ambient-influences with dubby atmospheres, resulting in music that fits both
dancefloors and living rooms. For the EP's forth track Jonas Korbl, who you
might remember from his debut album in 2017 on Dynamic Reflection LTD,
combines energetic percussion patterns and synth rhythms. His Primal Grade is
a seemingly perfect successor to Tozzi's Haboob, as both artists obviously
take pride in their carefully arranged and modestly performed pieces of
techno. Equilibrium is part of Dynamic Reflection's 15 year anniversary
celebration: Time Crystals. This is the fourth of five EP's. Own all five and

For
Token's 120th release, the imprint reintroduces scene favorite ORBE for
another EP. Revered for his deep and viscous textures over stark rhythms, the
Spaniard furthers his point in four calculated and layered examples. Opening
with deeply filtered synth work, ORBE takes his time to subtly introduce
shrill tension in the first track, displaying control in a progressive
arrangement. He's quickly able to accentuate his intention with a single
stab, providing a shimmer and a sharp edge to a rounder-bodied record.
Turning over to Andromeda 2, we switch to a dryer lead with a convoluted
ambiance, giving a driving track more structure through contrasted
transitions. ORBE intensifies the rest of the cut with an electrifying noise
circling around the mainland of his identifiably layered work. Alleviating
some harshness from the main components, the artist dives into a more liquid
and cavernous environment. Pressing through with sustained keys, ORBE
continues to evoke a sense of suspense even in his more adventurous tracks.
Anticipation rises and falls with the sustain of his resonant lead, taking us
to the final chapter of Andromeda. To round off the cosmic voyage our artist
departs with what, in the beginning, seems like another intimidating
presentation of thick synthlines whipping across a steady rhythm - but then
comes a surprisingly ethereal pad, oscillating throughout Andromeda 4, to
indicate a safe arrival from a nail-biting story |
