Hailing from Sunderland in England's industrial northeast, the Toy Dolls
infused their take on punk with ample doses of working/class humour, the
three-chord format a launching pad for witty originals and clever cover
tunes. 1983 debut Dig That Groove Baby captures the group at their finest,
their twisted rendition of kiddies tune "Nellie The Elephant"
topping the indie charts< the title track is an infectious singalong,
while "Spiders In The Dressing Room" and "Glenda And The Test
Tube Baby" are more irreverent tongue in cheek, all delivered in the
peculiar androgynous accent of frontman Michael "Olga" Algar.

Pioneering Latino punk band The
Plugz formed in Los Angeles in 1977 with frontman Tito Larriva, drummer Chalo
Quintana and bassist Barry McBride. After debut album Electrify Me, sophomore
set Better Luck saw McBride replaced by John Curry of The Flyboys< now
with better mastery of their instruments, Larriva and Chalo steered the sound
into new wave stylings, aided and abetted by guest horns, harmonica, and
keyboards. Yet, the band was still a critical force pushing against societal
inequalities, as heard on the caustic "American," and El Clavo Y La

Phillips. The film is about the life of GG Allin, a punk rock musician who
was infamous for extreme behavior (violence, obscenity, drug abuse) and his stage

and performing naked was one of Allin-s most common rituals), onstage
defecation and coprophagia, physical assault (both on and by Allin), and

The London Palladium show on 13th
October 1963 is considered to be the point when the national press decided
that they were dealing with a new phenomenon, Beatlemania, and a Daily Mirror
headline the following day read 'Police fought to hold back 1,000 screaming
teenagers'. Up to mid-1963, the Beatles' live set consisted mainly of cover
versions of contemporary black American pop. I Saw Her Standing There and Ask
Me Why were the only two band originals played at the Star Club in December
1962, and a set list from a ten-song show in April '63 contained only four of
their own songs. Yet by the end of the year, the Fab Four were making history
with their own songs and their own unmistakable sound. The material on this
LP comes from live performances and newsreels broadcast in late 1963. A must
for Beatles devotees |

series Marie-Antoinette: First Steps at Court is created by Deborah Davis and

with the departure of Maria Theresa of Austria's daughter for France, where
she is to marry the future Louis XVI. It's 1770, she's only 14 and still
menstruating, but she already has to 'give' an heir to her husband, who is a
year older than she is. Marie-Antoinette's first steps at Versailles are
painful, and at the start of the series almost resemble a psychological
horror film that captures all the cruelty and misogyny of the court at the

Published in 1997 by Moon Ska was
the seventh studio album by The Toasters. It has a much more mature sound
than their previous albums and wasn't as solely focused on one genre (2-Tone)
as their other albums before it had been. The album's cover includes the
supposed-Latin motto, 'Illegitimis non carborundum', which is supposed to
mean 'one must not be ground down by the bastards', although it is largely
faux-Latin, with 'carborundum' (intended to look like a Latin gerundive)

It
kicks off with “Manipulated”, a jacking track that comes coated in a wall of
steel drums and acrid acid lines. The climax comes when Sanys introduces
hoover riffs that sound like they were borrowed from Frankfurt’s early 90s
hard techno sound. “Survival” isn’t as full on, but it pulses darkly, with an
insane bassline and ticking percussion providing the backdrop for an eerie
chord sequence. Meanwhile, on “Tied Up”, Sanys continues his exploration of
the dubby sounds that he touched on the previous Downfall Theory release.
Rolling to the sound of a dense, stepping rhythm, ominous chords well up like
black waves churning on a stormy sea. This fifth instalment is unusual
because it features a track from another artist, Sequent, who had put out
music on Sanys’ other label, Etiku World. ‘Wriezen’ brings a mysterious
feeling to the release, with ghostly synths swirling in over a grainy bass.
But the final word is left up to Sanys. Like “Tied Up”, the groove on “AFC”
is more stepping than straight. Added to this assured swagger is an acidic
undercurrent and humming bassline that make for another no-nonsense take on
contemporary techno. Limited to 300 copies, expect five to become an object
of desire for all real techno lovers! |

The
word "techno" has had many different connotations to date. For some
— it's a simple rhythm pattern created on a drum machine, for others — a
beautiful legend from Detroit. Furthermore to some this is the future, while
others perceive it only as the past. For the new Moscow-based label
"Techno Gipsy" it is an uncanny amalgamation of all these feelings
and emotions, which can only accommodate such a big word with only five
letters. "Techno Gipsy" as a record label is a logical extension of
the ideology of the party series that goes by the very same name! Techno
Gipsy the label will stick to a clear (and at the same time very diverse)
line in its releases: techno, techno and only techno music. From the sound of
modern Berlin, dutifully sticking to the roots of the genre with true techno
stoicism to the genre defining anthems of the past, present and future!
Russia's newest outpost of the true techno sound starts life with the debut
release of the Russian producer Deflecting. It's raw, introverted techno,
which draws its inspiration from the retro-futurism of Detroit, Berlin and
the sincerity of the Swedish techno grooves. If feels as if the music compels
to be played on vinyl in large dark halls. The label plans to break through
and feature many talented local artists with remix support from established
international producers and musicians, however the focus won't lie solely in
the Motherland. Deflecting's original productions on this EP relay a perfect
balance between melody, fat bottom and tart flavor of proper techno music.
Remixes by Unbalance and Roman Lindau underline and reinforce this feeling,
with the first interpretation focused on giving the track a funky groove and
a more assertive direction, while the second remix emphasizes the powerful
bass, penetrating even into the farthest corners of the dance floor. This
releases masterfully incorporates several eras in techno music, as the Techno
Gipsy label stretches its muscles and shows big ideas and even bigger
intentions for the future! |

Portland
was produced by our mate Dave Clark aka Sparky and was the first record we
released in 2002, about a year before the first ever Numbers party took
place. Originally recorded live to tape using an MMT8, a Microwave II, and an
ESi32 in the summer of 1998, it was released on an old label of ours named
Stuffrecords and formed part of a somewhat rambling compilation called
STUFF001. We hastily stuck this record out without any proper distribution,
because at the time we didn’t know any better. Despite this the record did
pretty well, selling 500 copies to a few select stores who had faith in what
we were doing. Fast forward a year or so to when Numbers kicked off and the
track became one of the first bonafide anthems in the club. It was our tune
and it would tear the roof off at any of our parties. A couple of years
later, we booked DJ Pete, aka Substance, to play. We’re talking about the
record in the pub when he suddenly informs us that Ricardo Villalobos is
crazy about it and even charted it. This was a deep, almost Drexciyan electro
track and here was the king of crazy experimental minimal house music caning
it in his DJ sets. Not long after that night, the Numbers label was up and
running and the idea to re-release Portland with a remix from Mr Villalobos
was brought up almost as a kind of pipe-dream. Now in 2013, with a little
help from Gerd Janson, it has finally happened. Recorded live in one take and
clocking in at over 30 minutes long, it’s cited as an "experiment"
by Ricardo. Designed to play at two speeds, at 33rpm its almost like an early
90s Black Dog track stretched out to infinity, whilst at 45rpm, it’s a
club-ready groover with an almost Dopplereffekt rhythm to it – the sort you
could imagine sneaking into a DJ Assault or Godfather Ghettotech mix.
Somehow, it also manages to be classic Villalobos. To finish off the record
Dave gave us a two unheard tracks from those original Portland sessions in
1998. The malevolent electro of ‘Jigsaw’ would instantly have become another
Numbers anthem if only Dave had let us hear it ten years ago, and closer
track ‘Wilson St’ heads down an ambient route. About Sparky: Dave’s a bit of
a legend. In the early 90s he was a member of Glasgow Techno band State Of
Flux who released on JD Twitch’s old label T&B Vinyl. Their first live
show was supporting The Black Dog in 1992 at an old Glasgow venue called
Industria, and they were also the support at the first ever Jeff Mills show
in Glasgow. Later on Dave would release records under the name Truffle Club
and regularly collaborated with JD Twitch on remixes under the Optimo
(Espacio) banner. Dave and his brother Craig also released an ep under the
name ‘Music At Nite’ for former Numbers label Wireblock. Most recently, he’s
been working under the name LUMA for Optimo Trax |

The
rugged, noirish soul of Dave Aju’s third album Black Frames is still
lingering in our minds months after it dropped, and as you well know by now
we at Circus Company can never get enough of the San Francisco man’s
honey-coated voice. As such, we once again reached out to dear friends and
like-minded souls within the house and techno community to deliver three
reinterpretations of the man’s distinctive sound for a fresh dancefloor
perspective. Henrik Schwarz is a force to be reckoned with in the world of
rich, emotive and masterfully produced house music, and his reputation as a
remixer and editor extraordinaire is well founded. His approach to the
romantic sway of “Psylica” is nothing short of astounding, underpinning the
sizzling chemistry of Dave and Qzen’s vocals with playful bassline throb,
plucked string elegance and just the right amount of freakiness. In the world
of leftfield grooves we inhabit, Freaks have been vital figures all the way
back to the early days of Classic, and so the input of Justin Harris and Luke
Solomon makes perfect sense on this reworking of “Nu Threads". With a
rock-solid rhythm section given the necessary kink by a playful low-end and
some tuba-like blasts, the mischievous pair whip up an upbeat party-starter that
sets the original elements simmering amongst a delightfully modern confection
of prime-time house music. The B-side is given over to a thirteen-minute epic
by the rapidly-rising Rush Hour mainstay Awanto3, and he seizes the
opportunity to pile on the tension with a machine-driven reworking of “Vins
Noirs” that builds fervently towards total rave-fuelled abandon |

duo Monoblok&PSLKTR return to the Meant label with a superb new EP of
emotive, vocal lead electronica replete with remixes from Rework, Arnaud
Rebotini and My Favorite Robot. Yann Aubertot and Benoit Mascot AKA
Monoblok&PSLKTR have been releasing oustanding left of centre, electro
fuelled music for the past 5 years, racking up singles on imprints such as
Notorious Elektro and Lebensfreude Records before finding a home with
Remain’s Meant Records. Their music is a seamless fusion of rolling
electronic grooves melded with their own indie-rock influences and twisted
vocal offerings and this latest package is another perfect example of their
eclectic musical style. The EP opens with title track ‘Relapse’, a bouncing
and dark edged slice of hypnotic indie electronica. Rubbery live bass and
atmospheric guitar licks play against off-kilter synth lines and an insistent
drum pattern to create an ethereal soundbed for the duo’s nuwave, gothic
vocals. The original is followed with a remix from German production outfit
and label mates Rework who stripped things back, delivering a spacious
reinterpretation that eschews the live elements in favour of a more minimal
approach. The second of the two original cuts sees Monoblok&PSLKTR drop
the tempo and turn up the electro funk for the excellent ‘Walking Disaster’.
The original version focuses on old school arp lines, dark sweeps and
haunting vocals whilst Black Strobe man Arnaud Rebotini provides a remix
which boosts the intensity with metallic hits, swirling FX and a reverb
drenched sound. Finally Canadian three piece My Favorite Robot get to grips
with ‘Relapse’ turning in a reworking that brings the tracks cinematic flair
to the fore, wrapping the darkly illuminating guitars around stuttering beats
and claustrophobic delays, mesmerising stuff. Meant Records have delivered
once again, with an EP that beautifully blurs the lines between indie and

Again, it’s Jesse in the vocal booth, groaning his mantra to “dance, jack and
get your life to this” on a bed of erratic kicks, jittery acid and vexed rave
stabs. On the flipside, the celestial Charlotte B. Good glides into the room.
Her sensual Spanish stanza gracefully inhabits “Spanish Fly Reprise”, made
for horny, high as a kite early mornings. Charlotte alerts you that your time
to snatch up your one true love on the dancefloor has nearly expired.. Like a
siren, she lures you into her universe with sweet lamenting whispers. Better
think twice before you follow. If you’ve withstood the seduction of the
temptress, hitch a magic carpet ride home on the floaty FM bass and loon bird
calls of “Fly Spanish Dub”. Drop the dub straight after the reprise to earn
extra dancefloor coins. Finally, the Fly’apella lets you choose your own

Dreams Livekonzerte waren in ihrer 1970er Hochphase improvisierte
Klangerlebnisse, die mit geringem oder gar keinem Bezug auf ihre ebenfalls
esoterischen Hitalben Abend für Abend anders klangen. In den 1980ern
konkretisierte sich ihr Sound zu erkennbaren Strukturen, wodurch die Band
Soundtrack-Erfolge für einige der grössten Filmproduktionen des Jahrzehnts
(Risky Business, Firestarter, Near Dark, Thief, Sorcerer) erzielen konnte.
Heutzutage kehren die bestehenden Mitglieder Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich
Schnauss, Paul Frick (Brandt Brauer Frick) und Hoshiko Yamane zur
Improvisationsmethode der frühen Tage zurück und spielen Livesessions als
Konzert oder per Stream, von denen die besten Aufnahmen in der
"Sessions" Albenserie erscheinen, die im Herbst 2020 mit Vol. II
und III fortgesetzt wird. Beide neuen Veröffentlichungen wurden vom

Musician/sound
artist Mariske Broeckmeyer (MARIS) and author/poet Astrid Haerens found each
other in their shared love of experimental music, improvisation and jazz.
They discovered common ground in their artistic work, in their thinking, in
their love for art and literature, and started a conversation that has not
ceased. They both make work that focuses on physicality, femininity and (the
failure of) the voice, among other things. Their work revolves around the
knowledge that a body carries, and how you can start from there instead of
just the cerebral and analytical, aspects that are seen as predominantly
masculine and often central to literature. In 2022, the two worked together
for the first time on their literary jazz project around the effects of power
structures on a woman's body, bringing a breath of fresh air to the
predominantly male jazz scene. MARIS and Astrid invited Jasmijn Lootens, a
hybrid cellist who combines classical training with electronic music, to dive
even deeper into the research and crossover between poetry, spoken word,
performance, sound art and music together |
