Telegraph Avenue's debut album
shows the highpoint Peruvian rock had reached by 1971, when psychedelic
groups like Traffic Sound and Laghonia were bowing out of the scene, and Pax,
Tarkus, El Polen and Zulu were picking up the baton with their new projects.
Although this album draws on similar psychedelia and Latin rock sources, its
roots are intertwined with the breakup of Los Doltons, a beat band, whose
vocalist, César Ichikawa, took a trip to the United States at the beginning
of 1969, going to concerts by The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Jimi
Hendrix among many others. The album was an immediate hit and was sold all
over Peru thanks to the band's constant touring outside Lima and the LP's
striking cover design. All the songs on the album are so strong that were
released as singles |

Early
Life Forms is a new quartet fronted by Belgian guitarist and sound wizard
Vitja Pauwels, and on the 26th January, they are set to release their
self-titled debut album via W.E.R.F. Records; a stunning, one-off live show
recorded with American guitarist Marc Ribot (Robert Plant, Tom Waits, Wilson
Pickett, Marianne Faithfull, The Black Keys, John Zorn). Having already
earned his spurs as a sideman with artists including Naïma Joris, Bombataz
and Lara Rosseel, rising Belgian star Pauwels released his debut album 'Day
at Half Speed' in 2019, which explored the possibilities of acoustic guitar
and live electronics. This experiment became a new artistic path for Pauwels
and showcased his musical versatility, with second album 'Drift By, Sink In',
released to critical acclaim in 2022. The same year, Pauwels was invited as
special guest by the BRAND! Festival, Mechelen, to showcase new material and
he came up with the idea of putting together his 'dream' live band which
included his hero Marc Ribot, one of world's most accomplished and acclaimed
guitar players. Reaching out to him via videos and early demos for this new
recording project, Ribot liked what he heard and agreed to perform with
Pauwels and his new project Early Life Forms in what would be the band's
first ever live show. Joined by Frederik Leroux (baritone guitar), Laurens
Dierickx (Hammond organ) and Casper Van De Velde (drums), during the lead up
to the festival, Pauwels wrote a number of songs he felt would work for the
live show, with the only agreement being that there would be no rehearsals
ahead of the performance, only a brief soundcheck beforehand with Ribot. The
music was stripped down to its essentials - compelling melodies, themes, and
clear forms but with the possibility to change direction at any given moment.
"The music was played and heard for the first time, and it felt like a
birth of something that needed to be alive. We felt connected in the right
state of mind - relaxed and focused - and it all happened in a rush of shared
energy. No ego's or fear, only connection and the music", states
Pauwels. Drawing on latin, jazz, cuban, and rock with a touch of exoticism
and cinematic explorations, 'Early Life Forms' cites Ry Cooder, Henry
Mancini, Los Lobos, Ennio Morricone and of course Ribot, as heavy influences.
There is something existential, primary, something epic and at the same time
youthfully uncomplicated, which is strongly associated with the music. From
the mischievous and imaginative 'My Little Renaissance' to the adventurous
and hypnotic 'Latin Dancer', 'Early Life Forms' is overflowing with sharp
twists and turns, with Ribot's heavily rhythmic, distorted guitar amplifying
the cinematic feel to the sound. The on-stage relationship between each member
of the band and Ribot is childishly uncomplicated, something primary but
always epic. The music is left to the moment and the magic of their first
encounter with their hero Ribot. "Marc's commitment in the music was
better than I could have hoped for. What he played was with 200% intention,
putting the rest of us in a state of hyperfocus. Given the fact that it was a
one-time thing and a recording, we took risks without 'overplaying' or
overthinking it. Right before the gig, we felt an urge to play, Marc said,
"Let's rock!!" and we hit the stage", says Pauwels |

(Rotterdam, NL) between 2014 and 2018 (*‘Rubato Alle Tribù Del Sud’ not so
much written but mainly compiled from borrowed sounds from the south). The
latest ensemble outing comes courtesy of Fader, who runs his own Borneo
imprint and has recently released on the newly established Bar Rotterdam
label. The Dutchman delivers four different shades of powerful house music,
all of them crafted within the walls of his Tenth Floor Studio somewhere
between 2014 and 2018. The package kicks off with “Rubato Alle Tribù Del
Sud”, a tribute (as well as a nudge) to the hedonistic Italian nineties but
injected with a dose of edgy NY tribal house - an emotional yet uplifting
ride that will get any dancefloor hooked. Up next comes “Dirty Detox”, a
timeless affair consisting of a rolling Vermona Mono Lancet bass line, TR-909
drums, a touch of 303 and a mangled Casio CZ having a party while everyone’s
asleep. “Echt Hè” is the classy deephouse track of the bunch. Its moody bass
line and magical melodies are the result of a Boss DR 660 drum machine’s
pairing with a few singing eurorack modules. The grittiest workout is aptly
kept for the B2: “Suzan Caught On Tape” was the first piece of music production
Fader ever finished in the city of Rotterdam. After running it through his
old Mackie desk, throwing cheap reverb and delay effects on top, he bounced
the whole thing straight to cassette tape. Finito, as they say |

Cassegrain continue their empowering run of techno electronics with ‘Centres
of Distraction’, their debut album on Prologue. Leading us on a 10-track
expedition into a wilderness of rugged, challenging sonics, the album marks
the production duo’s development from adventurous new-bloods to fully fledged
Techno explorers. Over the course of the last five years, Alex Tsiridis and
Hüseyin Evirgen, now both firmly entrenched in Berlin, have created a heavily
detailed rhythmic language of morphing synthesis, high end processing and
club-chiseled production. A basis for much of their studio work, their
controlled, hardware-focused live sets have brought them to a unique and
respected position as showmen. A nod to the classic 90s electronic album
format - spanning a wide range of tempos and genres - ‘Centres of
Distraction’ covers a lot of ground. After the opening club-ready
syncopations of ‘A Study Of Splashes’, itself a warm and addictive cut, the
duo set out on a new exploration in purist electronica, beginning with
‘Resilin’. Morphing from abstract and reduced broken beats into a stirring
melodic piece, it’s the most song-structured we’ve heard them. And so change
and contrast are to continue as key themes. ‘Centres’ drops with its funky,
off-centre lines and rattling percussion, to be quickly followed by the
mighty ‘Intrude - Restrain’. ‘New Hexagon’ charms us into a deep hypnosis
with its percussive and rhythmic synthesis, highlighting the intricacies of
the duo’s drum programing. The serene mid-tempo tones of ‘Glasshouse’ create
yet another dramatic change in focus as a temporal, high-pressure and
high-intensity atmosphere is built and then gently deconstructe |

On the A side for part 6 of the
Expressions series we have Switzerland based Flowrian who has been making
waves in the 'liquid' drum and bass scene. Besides a couple of dubs signed to
the prestigious Good Looking label he has an LP forthcoming on Fokuz Recordings
later this year. 'There was a girl' is a rework of the 2011 version, an
uplifting tune with dreamy pads and cuts of heavy delayed trumpets and
strings. On the flip we got a duo consisting of Russian wonderchild
Intelligent Manners and the Nothing Hill,UK based Dynamic. 'So Sincere' uses
mashed up, spaced out samples and a deep bass. This one has the Fokuz

are happy to welcome a new artist into our family. Young Jose Pouj is one of
the new emerging talents from the Spanish techno scene. His speciality is
hard edged techno, but with a touch of class. A sound carefully crafted and
skilfully developed. His Blood Poisoning EP starts with 'Waken', a scientific
techno number with a solid rhythm arrangement, fat basses and sharp synth
workout; a funky electronic steamroller designed for body and mind. The B
side opens with 'Sepsis', a harder approach to modern techno with a strong
drum programming, sweeping drones, an arpeggiated bassline and a bunch of
bleeps that appear and disappear throughout the arrangement. An anabolic
track that slowly goes to a mental break and turns once more to madness. The
release closes with 'Organic Return', where the main course is made up of
carefully programmed synthetic drums, till an EMB-flavoured bassline comes
into the track, reminding us of the good old Pulsinger style. Summing up,
this is the work of a great young producer that injects new blood into our

reflection of her adventurous club sets, a well-balanced mix of powerful
beats and expansive atmospheres haunted by skittering echoes of the
dancefloor. Each track feels like fleeting memories of the club filtered
through the human experience - flickering moments illuminated by strobes and
shrouded in smoke, laced with the tang of sweat and psychedelics. Opener
"Tiny Mistakes Feeling HOT (Hellisnotamyth version)" coalesces from
curling vapors into infernal acid lines and rhythmic fragments that evaporate
almost as soon as they appear. "The Devil Loves The Detail (Lucifer's
Fire Version)" builds into an inescapable pulse amidst frayed
synthesizers, pressure building to fever pitch before "The Danger Zone
Of GFY (Freedom Version)" opens out into icy, astral synths.
"Monster of Business (Style Edition)" shifts closer to the
dancefloor with a slinking, syncopated groove, conversations from the smoking
area or studio creeping in at the edges, before erupting into the frazzled
bounce of "The Goat and the Night." "The Silence Itself is
Noise (Nonstop Bass Version)" loops back once again to more cavernous
atmospheres, warped bells and strafing melodic flourishes ringing out amidst
fizzing distortion and skeletal percussion. Silence Itself is Noise doesn't
clamour for attention, it necessitates it. Once again, NVST proves herself
unafraid to challenge club orthodoxy, and unwilling to patronize listeners,
instead making deft use of tension and release to create genuine moments of
surprise and transcendence |

This split release between
Frustrated Funk and Indulge Records sees FF head honcho klen Ovatow
reconnecting with Indulge's Oliver Kapp, a link that was established all the
way back in the mid/late 90s. Celebrating with a remastered version of Kapp's
Piston Rings (ME-01), one of the tracks that kickstarted the Indulge imprint
in 1996. And on the FF side Ovatow reshaped Kapp's The Trail into a 12 minute
deep dive. Obviously not your typical techno.. Beware!!.. |

Following
the extravaganza of their previous album 'Sexuality', The Germans set sail on
a transformative quest in search of peace and quiet. Withdrawn to the
countryside, unaffected by the spirit of the times, the Belgian ensemble
managed to create a unique and fascinating new opus, 'Spirituality'. Serving
as the second installment in the Germanity trilogy, the album surprises with
its classic songwriting and introspective mood. Guided by maverick producer
Micha Volders, The Germans meticulously craft a delicate sonic landscape
through the use of classical guitar, early digital synths, percussion,
prepared piano, and the addition of Rozanne Descheemaeker's beautiful French
horn arrangements. Picture a clandestine meeting in 1984 between Mark Hollis
of Talk Talk, a sleepwalking Kate Bush and Enya on expired lsd. In a wooden
shed in the secret corners of Bokrijk. Drinking absinth and recording an
album on the synths of Suzanne Ciani and a treasured mid 18th century French
horn. A sonic fever dream directed by David Cronenberg.
