Paranoid
London, the electronic band of Gerardo Delgado and Quinn Whalley, has become
synonymous with stripping acid house back down to its basics, rescuing the
sound from smiley faces, rave, and sugary excess while paying respects to its
gay, black, American roots. Performing mainly live with hardware only, often
with vocal guests, as well as unique hybrid DJ sets, the duo has established
a tongue in cheek, grumpy punk sound and attitude without taking it too
seriously. Following 2019?s latest album PL and a bunch of 12? singles and
edits, their new long-player Arseholes, Liars, and Electronic Pioneers refers
to the cavalcade of c***s we find ourselves surrounded by. Our only respite
being the joy that musical geniuses bring. The cover artwork and gatefold of
the vinyl reflect this with a collage-like poster including personalities of
all kinds, from politicians and royalty to music legends. When we asked them
to highlight key music pioneers from their picks, they mentioned American
electro don Aldo Marin, British producer Andrea Parker and Post Punk band
WIRE. Inspired by early ?90s British prog house on the likes of Sabres Of
Paradise Records and Guerilla Records, the album presents a step up on their
production while the anarchic attitude remains unaltered, unadulterated and
undiluted. In Quinn?s words: the album has a slightly more Hi-Fi sound than
previous efforts, but retains the urgency and punk rock attitude that we're
known for. It was tested over the summer, where it lit up festival stages at
Glastonbury, Houghton, Love International, and many, many others. As
expected, PL has recruited a bunch of special guests on vocals including
Primal Scream?s Bobby Gillespie, US house veteran Monica ?DJ Genesis?
Lockett, the novo-New Romantic/gothic, Jennifer Touch, and Joe Love, from Fat
Dog, Brixton?s current ones-to-watch. As well, previous collaborators Josh
Caffe and Mutado Pintado return for new recordings. All bring something
unique to the party, while integrating perfectly with PL?s Fuck you!

Boninsegna: Notes From The Underground 1986-1994 (Volumes 1 and 2) Cold Blow
/ Musique Pour La Danse. The story of dance music is littered with hidden
heroes and underground activists whose immense contributions have been
overlooked, ignored and under-documented. Tony Boninsegna, a producer who
made and released countless classic cuts and forgotten gems during the acid
house and rave era, is one such example. Melding elements of all that was
popular in underground clubs at the time to create his own
dancefloor-friendly sound worlds, Boninsegna amassed a huge catalogue between
1986 and '94, while hiding his involvement via an array of oddball aliases
and opaque pseudonyms. Boninsegna's story first came to light four years ago
when he appeared in Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British
Bass Music, Matt Anniss's critically acclaimed alternative history of UK
dance music in the rave era. Now Cold Blow has joined forces with Musique
Pour La Danse to deliver a much-needed anthology of his greatest productions
and co-productions - many rare or hard-to-find - for the first time.
Featuring 24 restored and remastered tracks stretched across two volumes on
vinyl and digital, including a handful of previously unreleased tracks and
mixes, and accompanied by detailed sleeve notes by Anniss, Notes From The
Underground 1986-1994 is a joyful celebration of one of British dance music's
most under-appreciated artists. The full breadth and depth of Boninsegna's rave-ready catalogue, as well
as an indication of the sheer volume of aliases he utilised during the
period, is explored in detail across the two-part compilation. Volume two
continues in a similar vein while devoting more disc space to Boninsegna's
breakbeat-driven productions of the early 1990s. So, alongside more must-have
tracks from the producer's Chill-released projects (Return of The Living
Acid's surging acid thumper 'Big Dipper', MI7's twisted bleep and breaks
monster 'Show I', and a couple of killer cuts alongside Mykey Tee as Original
Clique), Cold Blow & Musique Pour La Danse have also made room for the
proto-jungle brilliance of Ragga Head's 'Give The People Junglis', the
tongue-in-cheek excellence of Ministry of Fear's 'Original Cliché', two top
tracks as Napoleon, and the wild, acid breaks breathlessness of 'Monsoon' by
Sykosis 451. It all adds up to the definitive musical retrospective of a
genuine underground, rave-era hero whose time in the spotlight may finally
have arrived |

doom metal group Saint Vitus was formed in 1979, with Black Sabbath and Black
Flag noteworthy references. Seventh album COD, from 1992, made former Count
Raven frontman Christian Lindersson lead vocalist, the guitars now texturally
layered, and the drums bathed in heavy reverb, hearkening older styles of
metal. Overall, it's a testament to underachieves and burnouts everywhere,

in Harlem, Etta Jones began her career in the mid-1940s, recording for Black
and White and RCA, and performing with Earl Hines' sextet. Further recordings
for Decca and King helped solidify her reputation but Prestige truly upgraded
her status with the million-selling album Don't Go To Strangers, the most
outstanding of her career. Her expressive voice is never short of excellent
here, as heard on Fine And Mellow and an excellent arrangement of I Love
Paris, and most especially on the title track, which hit the US top 40. Get

The
newly reborn Danish label, tech-nology, is reintroducing its first two
releases. The second release on tech-nology back in 2003 by El Far, alsoknown
as Bjorn Svin, stands as a true techno masterpiece andis now rereleased as
the label has been relaunched in 2023. Bjorn Svin has taken the lead again,
contributing a remix that kick-starts the label in 2023 with TN EDITS 02
Lotte kaersa:"Prov og gor li'som jeg" - played by Luca Bacchetti at
Burning Man 2023. But this is all about the beginning of the label and the
beginningon the dancefloor Bjorn Svin was one of the first electronic
musician in Denmark spearheaded an uprising Scandinavian rave scene,
developinga unique, recognizable sound inspired by Detroit techno and British
early IDM pioneers: playful and melodic but simultaneously groovy and
entrancing. In 1997, April Records released Bjorn Svin's debut
full-lengthalbum Mer Strom; the opening single became an unofficialanthem for
the entire generation of Scandinavian ravers. Tech-nology captured a mature
Bjorn Svin in 2003 and releasedwhat is arguably his best techno track ever
produced, featured on this EP that highlights his techno skills under the
moniker El Far. This authentic techno experience transports you back to
theorigins of electronic dance music, going back to the old abandoned
warehouses where social and casual dancing defined the essence of the scene.

Following
the release of the first volume of Music 4 Tesla last April, Kaba and Hyas
(ex-residents of Le Sucre & Rinse FM) continue their musical exploration
between rap and UKG/electronic music, going even further on volume 2. While
the influences already present on the first album are still present: UK
Garage, Acid House, Ghetto House and 2step, Kaba and Hyas experiment with new
sounds. Incisive flow is joined by more sung, almost r&b vocals (10
Machines, Facts, Coup du sort), new textures with crunchy sounds (Mood 4 A
Classic), and sampling (Lick It). The 7 tracks that make up "Music 4
Tesla Vol.2", including a featuring with Detroit trio HiTech (the latest
signing to Omar-S's label), are a blend of pervasive house influences and bouncy
basslines borrowed from the sounds of funk. Over the course of 20 minutes,
they depict a captivating gradation of festive ambiences, proving once again
that the marriage of rap and house is definitely made to last. After a first
festival tour, including a notable appearance at Grünt in September, the Kaba
x Hyas duo will be in concert at Point Éphémère on December 16, 2023 |

the time of year when you look at life through a dark pair of sunglasses.
Summer is also the time of year when lovers of soul, disco, funk, bossa, jazz

and branded its acoustic discoveries with the appellation Beach Diggin', a

Mr.G opens the new year with a
bouncy and oldschoolish 12 on his home label Phoenix G. Ferm and deep
kickdrums that are being accompanied by lengthy chords and a frequently
return male vocal that states, bounce. All and all this is the dancefloor
music we are used to from Mr.G. The A2 brings a more technoish vibe to dance
to. This fits perfect in the modern trend of bass producers turning techno.
While of course G is somewhat more of a legend and he didnt just turn to this
type of music recently. It does proove that he is still abel to catch any
kind of vibe to get the people moving. On the B1 we find a Ben Sims remix.
Which of course is enough said. Mr Sims turns the A2 original into an
absolute floor wrecker |

The 'New Saft EP' series are
continued with an excellent VA featuring 3 of the freshest producers around.
FACES label boss 'Pablo Valentino' is in control of the A side with his moody
yet swinging 'La Caverne' . As usually, Pablo delivers some tight drum action
with some nicely fitting vocal cuts and some droning chord sounds that in his
case, never fail. For the B1 effort USA funk connoisseur 'Moon B' plays
around with the before mentioned chord and of course put's in some
otherworldly synths to take the original into those significant 'Moon B'
spheres. A little vibe change is coming from the hand of the ever so
mysterious 'Jefferson Belmondo' on the B2. A disco tainted slice of club
goodness is served by the man that pops up with an excellent track every now
and then. A record that fits great in what is thus far a trilogy, we hope
it's made the anticipation for the 4th installment even greater |

about finding things at places you don't expect. Loskober aren't afraid of
unorthodox production techniques and sound crafting. A strong dose of uber
saturated sounds is smartly blended into a mix of squelchy 303 sounds and
randomly placed crashed. Being just as straight forward as the Soul Notes
imprint is considering itself, Loskober is balancing on the thin line between
insanity and geniality. A place where producers are not likely to go for
their first output. The B side called ''Bounce that Ass'' again shows
some unconventional saturated drums
together with a repetitive disco sample that together create a filtered down
analog machine jam hinting to an outrageous period in dancefloor music whilst
keeping its own identity. Loskober doesnt care about rules and expectations,

bleef vlijmscherp tijdens de intense sessies. Toen het begon door te dringen
dat hij de mix niet meer zelf zou afkrijgen, riep Pintens de hulp in van het
vertrouwde producersduo Jo Francken en Pieterjan Maertens (Nie voe kinders,
Calais, Skepsels), die het werk binnen de uitgezette lijnen feilloos afmaakten.
Hoewel frontman Wannes Cappelle naast het verlies van zijn eerste luitenant
ook het vroegtijdig overlijden van een geliefd familielid te verwerken kreeg,
werd het geen somber album. Cappelle opent met een pakkende ode aan de
duurzame liefde, vraagt zich af wat te doen met de tijd die ons nog rest en
probeert te vatten hoe een boodschap van enkele seconden een levenslange
impact kan hebben. Maar Cappelle zou Cappelle niet zijn als hij niet ook de
blik naar buiten richtte en een spiegel voorhield die ons niet van onze beste
kant liet zien. 'Het langste jaar' is de muzikale neerslag van de hevigste
periode uit de geschiedenis van de band, maar is tegelijk wellicht de meest

The
'Obsidian Falls' EP from Seattle's Josef Gaard sits at a very fascinating but
incredibly complimentary space between traditional techno tendencies and
freeform ambient composition and experimentation. Each track seamlessly
references each other providing a straightforward sense of cohesion while
maintaining a constant and aggressively progressive motion. The EP will guide
and gently coerce the listener into experiencing a somewhat altered
perspective on sonic and musical expression. Without much notice the listener
will effortlessly travel from point "A" to point "C"
without realizing they've ever touched on point "B". As was the
case with Blankstairs alum, Archivist, Josef Gaard has played an integral
role in the development of the foggy and seemingly bleak techno leaning
sounds coming out of Seattle and the surrounding Pacific Northwest as of
late. As a curator and active resident for the Secondnature crew Gaard has
shared bills with Abdulla Rashim, Silent Servant, Israel Vines, Heatsick, and
Mick Finesse among many others. The 'Obsidian Falls' EP is his debut 12"
release and a rather successful statement on adventurous music targeted for

Aus welcome back label favourite
Shenoda for his third release on the label, 'Burn' backed with a remix from
Juxta Position. Previous releases on Hypercolour & Electric Minds have
seen Shenoda firmly on the ascent but it's in his recent outings on Aus that
his bold, rugged club music has really reached its zenith. 'Burn' follows
suit with its predecessors with its power being rooted in seismic, analogue
drums that are balanced against soft, allaying melodies. The muscular 'Vista'
then rolls out punching stabs and tight, shuffling drums before label mate
Marquis Hawkes dusts off his Juxta Position alias and delivers a pacey and
forthright take on 'Burn'. Melodies are softly mangled and given a spectral
quality that recalls his 'Mazury' on DVS1's Mistress wrapping another solid
addition to the catalogue as the Aus Music family continue to deliver the
goods |

could hear if you pressed 'play' already is a take on Liz Torres' masterpiece
that lived a great life in the 90s and got the resurrection after D'Julz
re-released it on his Bass Culture Records. This one, it seems, balances
between the original groove and all those 'Deep' and 'Get Down' editions
perfectly. Not overloaded with stuff, it squeezes everything from its 126 BPM
- almost impossible to listen to the end without moving. I tried. Both A and
B-side openers here are slightly similar and could be described as the step
on Cosmic Rhythm territory. Both of them got more or less the same pipey
vibe, but 'La Riviera' has much more energetic beat structure inside (built
around kick) while 'Protos' keeps pumping us with hats. The last one here -
'Gum' , with the most annoying moment on the preview cut (cuts just before
the drop), probably will get even more people screaming and shouting, than
any other track on this EP. Drop is working perfectly, be sure |

Essential 60s ska from the
legendary Skatalites line up, with a Sino/Japanese twist. In the early 1960s
Justin Yap and his brother Ivan [aka ‘Jahu’] ran the Top Deck sound system
from their family’s ice cream parlour and restaurant in Barbican, Kingston.
The local success of the sound system encouraged them to venture into the
recording business, and by 1962 Justin had recorded singers Larry Marshall,
Ephraim ‘Joe’ Henry and Ferdie Nelson. The fledgling label enjoyed a modest
local Jamaican hit in 1963, with trumpeter Baba Brooks and the Trenton Spence
Orchestra's “Distant Drums” issued on Top Deck Records as the b-side to Larry
Marshall’s hit “Too Young To Love”. As a fan of exotica composer Martin
Denny, Justin had heard “Jungle Drums” on Denny’s 1959 LP “Afro-Desia”. His
liking for Martin Denny would prove fruitful later, when Justin recorded the
Skatalites in a mammoth all-night session in 1964 at Clement Dodd’s Studio
One on Brentford Road |

Undersound marks its 20th release
with a collection of tracks from Scatterbaux. While the producer has a few
sparse releases online, he displays considerable dexterity on these hardware
jams. The A-side heavily features the classic 303 synth and opens with
“Ghosts On The Wing”, where the artist is experimenting with an 8 bar acid
pattern overlayed with dreamy leads and pads. This is followed by “Acid
Squabble”, where two 303 lines bounce off each other exchanging their filter
positions conveying a range of feelings and emotions. The B-side follows with
“Chamber 27”, an electro jam with 808 drums and a driving 101 bassline. The
EP closes with the fast paced “Womp Bucket”, with its evolving drum patterns
and emotional overtones, completing a showcase of the producer’s signature
acid tinged style |

Tribal,
funky, super techno. Emerging and extremely talented UK based Hurdslenk
offers us a robust 4 tracker where modern sound design meets a classic, year
00s approach to understanding the genre. 'Effective' is the word of the day,
as it marks a steady consistency throughout both sides. Kayak is an EP
entirely dedicated to highlighting rhythmic compositions and their subsequent
effect on the body. A1introduces a multitude of metallic layers, from a
consistent ringing tone on the background to the coming and going of highly
clanging rides- yet, maintaining pounding low ends. Get2definitely hits the
hardgroove shelf of your collection. Second in comes Delta which extends the
tribal edge of its predecessor, adding a layer of sensuality and seduction.
Engineering a thoughtful interplay between suavity and strength, this track
is guaranteed to do the do. Big room killer. Time to flip the vinyl now, and
well... Fasten your seatbelts dear listeners and dancers. B1 is fun and
dynamic, minimalistic and most importantly, powerful. In between the fuel
efficient percussions and drum patterns comes in a witty snippeted vocal,
which adds to building up the exquisitely constructed rhythmic tension of the
track. Definitely a favorite. Last but not least, everybody welcome Humpty-
closer to this stomper EP. Slinky and bulky bass throbs force the hip to get
into some heavy swing action. With B2 the circle is closed and the message
delivered: to dance and never stop |
