When Billy Eckstine's band dissolved in the mid-1940s,
adventurous drummer Art Blakey spent two years in Africa, where he briefly
converted to Islam< back in New York, he gigged with Miles and Monk,
before fronting his own Jazz Messengers. 1957's Orgy In Rhythm drew on the
sounds of North Africa and the Middle East, Blakey's unfettered drumming
accompanied by Latin percussionists such as Potato Valdez and Evilio
Quintero, with Herbie Mann on flute. The musical arrangement is stunning, at
times melodic or primordially rhythmic, but never short of pure brilliance.

Klute,
a.k.a. Tom Withers is no stranger to the LP format, Whatever It Takes is his
9th solo album. It was recorded over a period of 18 months in his own PBJ
Studio, located in Suffolk. Whatever It Takes contains Klute's signature
blend of Drum & Bass, Hardcore, Jungle, House, Techno, Electro &
Ambient stitched together with Klute' typical disregard for the rules of each
genre. Split into two halves, the album begins in high gear with 8 tracks of
Drum & Bass. A rich pallet of D&B styles delicately layered with
hidden depths and melancholic harmony. The album then shifts into Klute's own
brand of House Techno & Electro, fully revealing his vivid tapestry of
musical influences. The end result is highly original, individual and unique.
Nobody sounds like Klute. Klute on the album: "...with so much going on
in the world and all the noise created by a growing instant culture I felt
compelled to retreat into my own imagination and write individual chapters in
melody and rhythm as a form of distraction and personal remedy. Early on in
the process I made a conscious decision to make a wholly solo and

trip-hop. "This time I wanted to compose music and then perform my
instruments live making this album. I used mainly old synthesizers and other
instruments and a heavy layer eighties reverb machines. Before moving to the
Netherlands, I was growing up in the nineties in Kyiv, surrounded by economic
turbulence and a weird mix of music from different decades that overflowed
the country after years of isolation. Accompanied by the weird early
Ukrainian visual culture I was mesmerized by the music videos I saw on TV and
I wanted to belong there. I guess I never really grew up, still drifting like
a cowboy through imaginary spaces, in a timeless vacuum, outside of real
life. I decided to release this album as Sasha Renkas, because it felt very
personal and pure, all coming from a spacious, misty place where everybody is
still alive and safe." |

Mark
Beiner met Ben Iverson in 1976 when I was 17 years old, at the time he was a
junior at Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens. Mark had taken a part time
job as a Produce Clerk at Walbaum's Supermarket on Northern Boulevard in
Jackson Heights, Queens, where I met Ben Iverson, the "Frozen Food
Manager." Back then Mark remembers, 'I was going to work early just to
talk to him about his musical background and his time spent in the 50's and
60's with the Ohio Doo Wop Group, "The Hornets", or better known
as, "Ben Iverson and The Hornets."' In 1978 after Ben and I
discussed getting together and composing music, I started writing poetry and
expressing in writing my break-up with my college girlfriend, Paula. Ben and
Mark went on to writing two albums worth of material, which in turn gave us a
lot of time and presence on stage at our live gigs. The regular Coast to
Coast Band members consisted of Ben Iverson on Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitarist
and Co-Executive Producer, Joe Crowley, who is known today as "New York
Congressman Joe Crowley." Carl (Woody Wood) Morton on Bass Guitar, Jimmy
Johnson on Keyboards. Lead Guitarist, Lou Jimenez, currently owns his own
recording studio, Music Labs in Elmont, Long Island. On Drums, Eddie Byam, on
Alto Sax, Jay Cohen, who in the 70's used to record for "Gary U.S.
Bonds." Gary Pevols on Trumpet. On Bone, Scott Burrows, Trumpet player,
Steve Becker, along side Neil Levine, Stan Stockley, Tom Russo |

Hailing
from Brittany, historical center of France's industrial scene and in close
proximity to Belgium's infamous rave and EBM innovations, Ekors set out to
deliberately blacken and burn the sophisticated sounds emanating from Paris.
With releases on Amsterdam's harsh Leyla imprint, fellow French hardcore
iconoclast Umwelt's Flesh or Die, and JoeFarr's User Experience, the trio
undoubtedly made their name in their lonely redoubt in the timberland, and
Rant & Rave is honored to host their theme EP, Forest Killers, as our
fifth release. 'Woodchip' conjures nightmares of dead bodies run through a
woodchipper rather than more pastoral scenes, its distorted kicks,
bone-crushing bass and blasted-apart leads chopping air and anyone unlucky
enough to stand in its way. Title track 'Forest Killers' is murderous, the
lurching breakbeat and shrapnel percussion approaching like axe falls ever
closer until the horror score melody enters, then accelerating frantically as
the killers close in. 'Evil Sapp' only seems subdued in comparison, its
hammering techno pulse providing scant breathing room as industrial machinery
fells nearby trees. Self-explanatory 'Chainsaw Requiem' ups the discomfort as
the titular tool buzzes overhead, more Texas Chainsaw Massacre than weekend
warrior woodpile work. Amidst squalling leads, ricocheting percussion,
fearful blasts of noise, and pounding bass and kicks, Ekors escort us out of
the haunted wood, sighs of relief and evil laughs joining in chorus |

Monasterio line-ups. More investigations of the project lead to R-Label Group
and to some seriously dangerous high pressure techno. Automatic is a driving,
euphoric, millennium-vibe infected track, sounding just timeless. We are
excited to have such a sound on our board here. BEREZA closes this chapter

winning three leading Belgian music awards with Humo's Rock Rally, De Nieuwe
Lichting and Sound Track, girl band BLUAI is expanding its horizons. On their
debut album Save It For Later, the trio leaves for a road trip through the
sonorous areas populated by the likes of Big Thief, Pinegrove, Haim, and
Alabama Shakes. Save It For Later is a record not unlike a Polaroid picture.
Belgian songwriter Catherine Smet captures the memories of her youth in
lyrics with a perfume of Americana, country pop, and indie folk. The stories
areset in her native Flanders, but close your eyes, and galloping horses on a
ranch in Mississippi form the backdrop of BLUAI's debut album. Catherine Smet
(vocals, guitar), Mo Govaerts (drums), and Caitlin Talbut (bass) joined
forces with producer Willem Ardui (blackwave.) for this record. BLUAI's
instrumentation was expanded with banjo, twelve-string guitar, and lap steel.
Engineer Tobie Speleman received 'Nashville tuning' as a briefing. BLUAI thus
shifts the focus from indie rock to Americana and breaks open the band's
frame of reference, with influences ranging from Maggie Rogers to Alabama
Shakes to The Japanese House. Save It For Later is the creation of a group
that came together two years after the formation of BLUAI, found a common

Early
2020, rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist Kunde (Ku:nde?) aka Joram
Kunde Boumkwo travels to his father's birthplace of Cameroon for the first
time in two decades. This journey sparked the inspiration for his debut album
'Dandelion,' which will be released on W.E.R.F. Records on February 9, 2024.
In this introspective concept album he uses storytelling, rap, spoken word
and field recordings of his trip to delve into the complexity of his Afropean
identity, intergenerational trauma, toxic masculinity and neocolonialism.
Hisp razor sharp and poignant narrations are counterbalanced by the soothing
and soulful sonic textures with influences ranging from hip hop and jazz
fusion to electronic afrobeats and spoken word, with touches from neo soul
and bossa nova. All tracks were composed, recorded and produced by Kunde,
with contributions from Susobrino (BAD MAN) and Helenar Casella (You Should

acid pop outfit Cho Co Pa Co Cho Co Quin Quin channel the globe-trotting
spirit of Haruomi Hosono’s 1970s tropical boogie on their debut album,
Tradition. Named after one of the basic rhythms of Cuban folk music and
drawing on influences from across the globe, Cho Co Pa Co Cho Co Quin Quin
are quite simply a world unto itself. Comprised of three childhood friends,
Daido, Yuta and So, who reconnected during the coronavirus pandemic, Cho Co
Pa initially emerged as a playful way for the three 23-year-olds to pass the
time. Tapping into their youthful connection, they created a sound that
exudes confidence and curiosity, a homage to the masterful world of YMO’s and
Happy End’s Haruomi Hosono, rooted in the trio’s own idiosyncratic experience
of the present. Recorded at home and promoted on hugely popular DIY TikTok
videos, their debut album Tradition is a technicolour exercise in armchair
travelling – a kind of lockdown exotica for the housebound whose nostalgic
flights of fancy are laced with a sense of whimsical melancholy for the lost
freedoms of youth. Referencing everything from Afro-Cuban percussion to lo-fi
beats, Buddhist spirituality to trap, each member of the band brings
different musical inspirations to the table. Latin American and Middle
Eastern styles sit adjacent to a fascination for the electronic music of
Aphex Twin, Dorian Concept, Underworld and Daft Punk. At times, the music
verges on acid pop bliss, at others, it grooves with the instrumental funk
sensibility of BADBADNOTGOOD. “In the first place, when I create a song, my
goal is to transport the listener to a mysterious place,” vocalist Daido
explained in a recent magazine interview. Using lyrics as another sonic
texture in the composition of ideas, Cho Co Pa paint beguiling sonic
postcards of far-flung moods across 12 highly original tracks. Marrying the
organic and the electronic on rhythmically sophisticated compositions like
‘Chichibu’ and ‘Watatsumi’, it is on the album’s standout track ‘Gandhara’
that the experimental sound of Cho Co Pa comes to the fore. Referencing the
ancient city of Gandhara through which Buddhism made its way from India to
China, the track is a vocoder-trap-inspired, Udu drum-driven pop jam that
lilts with unmistakable Balearic flair. If that’s difficult to imagine, then
know simply that ‘Gandhara’ sounds like nothing else on this side of Saturn.
Even Daido seemed surprised by the outcome: “I feel like we were able to
create something that exceeded our abilities. That was huge!” Hugely popular
in Japan, with festival appearances lined up alongside BADBADNOTGOOD at
Asagiri Jam in October, it's safe to say the success of Tradition has taken
Cho Co Pa by surprise. You won’t have heard anything like it." |

thumping quadruple kicks thunder like a furious heartbeat as Tidal Lock mixes
up the vibe and experiments with off-key tones and delivers a neurotic energy
to the breaks. Rapid hats and snares accelerate the mix with deep undertone
sub bass, as ASC crafts a cacophony of detail and delirium to a track that
somehow fuses both calm and a tenacious ferocity in one. Unique, stylish and
a joy to listen to. AA1 - Centurion: A DJ-friendly intro opens Centurion with
initially simple breaks which are soon joined with detail and a forceful
finesse. Curious, inquisitive FX and melodies bristle melancholically as a
stunning deep bassline seizes the attention and the atmosphere elevates.
Familiar classic atmospheric signatures add to the complexity later in the
track, with all layers continuing to breathe throughout. AA2 - Nexus: ASC
concludes the EP with a deep, rapid fire workout in Nexus -a track which
quickly exudes a moody, tense vibe driven by a nervous vigor - inviting you
to explore its immersive tapestry of quality modern atmospheric breaks.

by Elad Magdasi. This release is red by all means, with a combination of dark
synths and playful notes, Elad mixes his favorite styles while keeping the
mood tooly and dancefloor oriented. All the tracks are named by their
position on the record, similar to the oldskool way, focusing on the music
alone. All RedBox tracks were produced at the same time, on the same wave of
inspiration, they compliment each other though being completely different.

Italian
artist Raffaele Attanasio kicks off the New Year for Mutual Rytm with his
superb 'South Signatures' EP, channelling multiple techno styles into one
potent package. Landing as Raffaele Attanasio's second outing on SHDW's
Mutual Rytm label, following his incredible debut 'Quasar' and recent
appearance on the third instalment of the label's Federation Of Rytm
compilation, the EP is a showcase of an exciting artist with a new school
take on techno while bringing real respect for the roots of his sound. He has
played live on stage with the legendary Jeff Mills, and is involved in
several other musical projects in different genres but reserves his finest
techno for his own name. 'Madrigal' opens the EP, with Attanasio crafting an
apocalyptic anthem composed of one sound, the Nord Wave 2 synthesizer and a
pumping groove. It is pure dance floor heat with unrelenting drums that lock
in the crowd. The brilliant 'Heat' then brings tribalism, with a powerful
rolling groove peppered with chord stabs that bring it to life. 'Aogiri Tree'
features rousing drums that emerge from the undergrowth and accompany the
macabre lead synth. Its mischievous notes hint at hidden danger and keep you
on your toes. Keeping the energy high, 'Stratford Fog' delivers a battle
between drums and the constantly pulsing bass. Edgy chord stabs and raw
percussion make for a breathtaking groove that never lets up and keeps you
utterly engaged. The title track is a laser-focused production that harks
back to the golden age of Neapolitan techno with a perfectly designed groove,
before digital bonus 'Eleven' brings hints of stylish Detroit techno with its
lush chords and arpeggiated saw bassline, creating a continuous flow right to

Returning
to Intrepid Skin after her brilliant debut EP, and following on from a string
of acclaimed releases since then, Berlin-based producer, DJ, and label owner
Valerie Ace presents four new cuts of powerful hard dance and techno. Strass
and Stress is out 1st March as both vinyl and digital. With a background in
organising DIY raves and a commitment to community-led efforts in electronic
music, Valerie carefully fuses references from a range of genres into a
singular, contemporary take on techno. Guided by an instinctive ear for
experimental, groove-driven frameworks, her strain of dance music is
hard-edged but mischievous, playful but heartfelt. Diving straight into the
peak hours, opening track 'Taking a Risk' is a swirl of hard kicks, frantic
alarms and distorted leads; a statement of intent for what is to follow. Hot
on its heels is the aptly-titled 'Slay'- a marching roller with double drops
of acid, warped sonics and echoing glitches. Plunging into a hazier zone,
'Anxious not Afraid' takes an intoxicated spin on psytrance, building a vast
acoustic space with equal parts tension and release. Closing off the EP, 'How
To Fit In' jumps back onto the floor with an unrelenting spiral of

Records will kick off with "Zero Plague" January 2024 after a long
hiatus from 2022 through to 2024. Specimen are now proud to present such a
prolific artist as MANASYt whose level production has reached so many labels,
along with extensive Dj work throughout Europe. Zero Plague - another
neurovision broadcast by replicant agent MANASYt. The opener - is a dystopian
death march anthem, guided by a rolling snare, thick kick and throbbing bass.
Arpeggios sounding like wasps on acid hover in the background, adding to the
atmosphere of imminent danger! Angellust - a hectic breathless industrial
electro monster. Fuzzy distorted bass is driving us through a dark desolate
territory. Complete with chaotic claps, minor synth stabs, a siren-like
clinical pad and Petar's hopeless vocals (reminiscent of his days fronting
metal bands). Next is the Pestilent Mix for SNS Sensation new wave
masterpiece "Mirror Radio". Sebastian is also the voice of UK duo
Heartbreak (with synth wizard Ali Renault). Petar says : "It's a very
impulsive work that sounds nothing like the original! Blending two different
beats, mangled voices and psychotic off-kilter leads. Total madness."
First on the flip is the Novichok Mix for Poladroid. Petar and Vadim go way
back to Roulette Rekordz in 2003, so this colab is natural, to say the least.
It's the only time where the tempo slows down a bit on this EP. Bubbling
worm-like bass, metallic percussion, cold windy pads and a classic electro
lead take you on a journey to a soulless barren planet. At last "In Deep
Tongues". A heady schizophrenic exercise. A commanding beat, a grotesque
polka bass followed by a paranoid synth lead pull you through a darkened maze
with no exit. Underwater gurgles and fearsome corroded effects fill the air,
no escape! After 20 years, MANASYt hasn't slowed down or mellowed his intense
immoderate sound one bit! And "Zero Plague" is undoubtedly a true
testament to that! He is an artist who couldn't care less about trends or
hype, and whose main driving forces authenticate passion for this genre. Some
of his tunes resemble future horror movie soundtrack, others a visit to a
mental clinic, but most sound like what hostile aliens would listen to while
attacking Earth. Bulgarian dark mastermind Petar Tassev Manayst has been
rocking his brand of Nuroelktro since 2003. He is responsible for a vast
array of menacing titles on labels such as Touching' Bass, Kommando 6, Musar,
and the infamous Bunker, along with 40 others. MANASYt is currently based in
Xiamen, China |

- Phases Of Reality: Easing into the proceedings in subtle yet impactful
style, Phases of Reality offers an eerie, soothing aura of sound with bells
and horns and a progressive, powerful bassline hook. The melancholic
atmosphere grips the listener throughout, intensely wrapping itself around
the classic old school breakbeats to create a collage of audio fit for both
the dancefloor and that late night contemplative drive home in the rain. A2 -
Impressions: Instant double snare breaks with a hint of apache set the tone
for an energetic, thrusting track as ASC flexes his creative spark with
Impressions. Rhythmically dashing through a dreamily complex assortment of
wispy, thoughtful synths and stretched vocal samples, in lieu of a breakdown
the drums suddenly switch pattern for the second half, dialing up the
considered intensity which is carried through to a suitably abrupt filtered
conclusion. AA1 - Solyaris: An enchanted female vocal sample opens and
punctuates Solyaris, a deep, absorbing track which fuses the heft of ASC's
classic analogue amen breaks with inquisitive melodies and suspenseful synth
work to construct a breathtaking cosmic amen mover for the dancefloor. Sci-fi
FX add to the interstellar vives in the respite of the breakdown, before the
headline breaks resume their aural assault on the senses. AA2 - Oblivion:
Mixing up the vibe for an eclectic conclusion, Oblivion utilises a uniquely
scattershot hot pants break pattern, with stark clusters of hi hats and sharp
snares playfully juddering around a patchwork of echoed mini melodies and a
soothing overarching tune. Deep sub bass accentuates the track, occasionally
flecked with delicate samples resulting in a great DJ tool and a quirky
energy to savour |
