The
founders of Cukor Bila Smert’ (Ukrainian:
Цукор– Біла
Смерть, English: Sugar – White Death)
band were Svitlana Okhrimenko (a.k.a. Svitlana Nianio), Oleksandr Kohanovs’kyi,
and Tamila Mazur, who studied at the Reinhold Glier Kyiv Academy of Music in
1984-1988. In the summer of 1988, they got acquainted with Eugene Taran, a
young guitarist and artist. He joined the band and also became the ideologist
of Sugar – White Death. Moreover, Eugene coined the name for the band: the
irony towards the Yellow Press. The musicians gathered at Kohanovs’kyi’s
house, where they spent their free time not only playing music but also
listening to and discussing new records and thinking about the conception of
their new project. For two years, the band recorded a few home-made albums,
such as “Rhododendrons Coral Aspides” in 1988 (which is considered lost),
where Kostyantyn Dovzhenko took part as a guitarist and sound engineer. He
also replaced Taran during the recording session because Eugene was passing
an exam at that time. The band also recorded another album – “Lilies and
Amaralises,” in 1989, which is also considered lost. Eugene remembers that
the band made a lot of recordings but did not pay so much attention to them.
Sugar – White Death played live occasionally but spent more time creating
their own sound, which was named by Oleksii Dekhtyar (a founder of “Ivanov
Down”) as a “sugar calypso sound.” At that time, the music was mostly created
by Oleksandr Kohanovs’kyi, and the lyrics were written by Svitlana Okhrimenko
and Eugene Taran. In February 1990, a quartet came to the Scientists House
Studio in Kyiv, where they had one studio session only, recorded by Valerii
Papchenko. Musicians played live for about one take. This session was
represented on the “Mannered Music” compilation by several blocks – “Venus
with Long Neck,” “The New Sissies,” and “Rhododendrons Coral Aspides,” which
was shortened to “Rhododendrons” on the cassette (two songs from which –
“Summer Will Not Come” and “The Great Hen-Yuan’ River,” dedicated to Grigorii
Khoroshylov, the sinologist from Kyiv). The compilation cover design was
created by Eugene Taran. Later, this tape got to Vlodek Nakonechnyj, the
founder of Koka Records, a young Polish label, who released “Mannered Music”
on cassettes and made efforts to invite Sugar – White Death to play several
gigs in Poland. In November 1990, Sugar – White Death played their last gig
as a quartet in Kharkiv. They were invited by Sergii Myasoyedov, who curated
the art association “Nova Scena” (The New Scene). The band played selected
tracks from the albums “The New Sissies” and “The Shellfishes in Gold
Wrappers” (the last one is also considered lost). Due to Sergii Myasoyedov's
efforts, the performance was documented: he saved a lot of photos and
fragments of soundboard recordings on reel-to-reel tape. Later, Oleksandr
Kohanovs’kyi and Tamila Mazur left Sugar – White Death: Oleksandr founded his
own project Pan Kifared, and Tamila became a bass player of Shake Hi-Fi
(whose co-founder was Eugene Taran). Sugar became a duo of Svitlana and
Eugene. They started to focus on their next work: “Antinoy Is Leaving” in
late 1990. In 1992, they were also invited by Sergii Myasoyedov for a studio
session in Kharkiv, where due to the efforts of Oleksandr Vakulenko, Sugar
recorded the new album called “All Secrets Of A Poem”. Some tracks from the
work (“Dead Ceremony,” “Vienna Is Sleeping,” and “Untitled”) were released on
their next and last album, “Selo” (“The Village”). The rest compositions were
published as a part of the compilation for the first time. In the autumn of
1992, the musicians went to Poland, where Vlodek Nakonechnyj, who wanted
Sugar to come to a “real” studio, organized their last recording session.
Although the journey’s beginning was unsuccessful (Eugene’s guitar was taken
away by a customs officer when crossing the border), the musicians worked
fast during the session at the Arek Was studio at Marki on an 8-track
reel-to-reel machine. Boleslav Blazhchyk took part as a cellist, playing the
parts created by Svitlana. The album was completed in three days – the
musicians spent two days recording and one-day mixing, mostly done by Eugene
Taran. In 1993, this work was released as “Selo” (“The Village”) album on
cassette tapes by Koka Records (remastered by Tadeusz Sudnik). Later, Sugar –

songs from the 'Model Workmanship' demo from 1980, making it a classic four
track EP. Model Workers deal in angular pop with a clear punk edge, with lead
track 'My Winter of Discontent' being a pure DIY gem that is tight and
jangly, and has the same feel as an early Television Personalties or The
Times 7" or even a home recorded demo by the Jam. Had it been a Whaam!
label release back in the day, Model Workers would have been a household
name. But as it turned out Model Workers lifespan was short, burying the band

Originally
released on September 30, 1991, Orbital's eponymous debut album became known
as "The Green Album" to distinguish it from their second album
(known as "The Brown Album") The Green Album includes the seminal
'Belfast' and a live version of 'Chime', the landmark dance track that
launched their career in 1990. The album will be remastered and represented
in multiple formats, to be released alongside the band's 'Green Album' UK
tour (the band performing Green & Brown albums) starting on 24th April .
They've just be announced for Coachella , as well as Miami's Ultra Festival
& headline shows in New York & Chicago. Last available on vinyl in
2015 - long time sold out. Back On Double Vinyl editions. Following on from the
UK Top 20 success of 2022's 30 Something, and the Top 10 for 2023's Optical
Delusion, London Records launch an extensive 2024 campaign for Orbital,
revisiting 1991's seminal debut Orbital (aka The Green Album). The Green
Album heralded a brave new world for the UK musical landscape (DJ Mag would
later decry that the album "rewrote the rule book for rave").
Brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll eschewed formulas and clichés, choosing to
explore wider textures, rhythms and stranger mind spaces within dance music.
Their resulting album would enjoy both chart success and an enduring legacy,
influencing and inspiring artists from Björk to Bicep, with the Hartnoll
brothers going on to collaborate with artists as diverse as Madonna, Ennio
Morricone, Kraftwerk, Sleaford Mods and Professor Brian Cox. 33 years since
its original release the album is revisited, from black vinyl , limited
colored vinyl and CD editions (long out of print), to special Record Store
Day double Splatter Lp. In the digital space 'Tonight In Belfast' will be
lauched on February 2nd, :a reworking of the band's seminal track 'Belfast',
remixed by David Holmes and re-interpolated with new lyrics and vocal by
acclaimed street poet Mike Garry. Orbital will be supporting The Green Album
with an extensive headline UK tour this April (performing both their Green
and Brown albums). Ahead of that they've just been announced today for
Coachella 2024, as well as Miami's Ultra Festival and headline shows in New
York and Chicago |

Old
friends Julian Bates and Alex Gray —working together as Mighty Truth for the
first time since 1995’s From The City To The Sea — filled a car with old
analogue synths, kids’ noise toys, and collected field recordings took a road trip down to hole up in an old
water mill in southwest England’s bird-twittery, bee-loud Quantock hills.
Things got cinematic: unequal measures of early Weather Report, Wim Wenders,
and Serge Gainsbourg kept them wonderfully lost in their imagined world. Back
in London with guest singers Allonymous (Paris via Chicago) and Wayne Paul
(London), they completed the album and decided to just call it Mighty Truth.
With an aim to present the live show at moonlight pop-up cinema venues, Mighty
Truth are here for the next chapter in their epic saga. Back then... Old
friends Julian Bates and Alex Gray first met through their shared obsession
with classic cars (both owned old SAAB 96s). At the time, Julian’s band
Nightrains was signed to ACE Records in the UK whilst Alex worked first as a
session keyboardist for the likes of Edwyn Collins, Billy Mackenzie, and
Busta “Cherry” Jones, and later as a mixer and remixer working with S’express
producer Pascal Gabriel, Malcolm McLaren, and soul DJ legend Dr Bob Jones.
Working together in the studio for the first time producing Vanessa Freeman
(4 hero), Alex and Julian decided to embark on a drop-tempo jazz trip project
they named Mighty Truth. Dr Bob heard that first self-released vocal track
“Rebirth” and started dropping it on Kiss FM (UK). After guest DJ slots on
Coldcut’s Kiss show, Alex and Julian signed to Tongue and Groove records. The
album From the City to the Sea produced a number of singles and both
“Rebirth” and “Is it a Wizard or a Blizzard” were licensed to many
compilations both in the UK and internationally (eg. Dope on Plastic, Mole
Listening Pearls, Eight Ball). The Sound of Sinners is a NYC boutique record
label focused on vinyl and digital releases by Indie, ambient, avant-garde

In early 2006, TABOU1 producer
Guillaume Bougard booked Harry J Studio for a week to record 12 new songs by
Horace Andy following the highly successful Mek It Bun released a couple of
years before. To back such a legendary artist, TABOU1 asked Sly & Robbie
and the Revolutionaries (Channel One studio band in the late 70's) to work
the "old school" way: all musicians would play live, together and
in one take, as opposed to recording their parts separately as is now done in
modern music. The result is stunning, with luminaries Ansel Collins and
Robbie Lyn on keyboards and organ, Sticky Thompson and Skully Sims on
percussions, Dalton Browne and Dougie Bryan on guitar. Bob Marley's synth
wizard Tyrone Downie added some musical pixie dust while Stepper did the

Music continue to celebrate the legendary work of ‘Directors Cut’, one of
house music’s most memorable partnerships. This time Frankie Knuckles and
Eric Kupper’s euphoric vocal house classic, ‘Get Over U’ feat. B Slade, gets
the rework treatment from esteemed US DJ Tedd Patterson and Berlin-based
Chambray, alongside an edit from Sami Dee and Frankie’s own Mr Director’s
‘Feels Good’ Dub, which has never been released on vinyl until now. The
package opens with two brand new remixes. First up is Berlin-based Chambray
who has previously delivered a range of dancefloor bombs and worked with the
likes of Laurent Garnier and DJ Haus while establishing himself as a
respected name in underground music. Here he delivers an energetic and
contemporary House meets disco rework, bright and uplifting with piano stabs,
electronic claps and brilliantly reworked vocals. Next is esteemed US
DJ/producer Tedd Patterson, who throughout his career has earned the title of
House Music royalty and is regarded as one of the best-known house DJs in the
world. He delivers a remix that retains the classic house feel; verging into
disco territory with big strings and jazz influences whilst always
maintaining the dancefloor focus. The B-side focuses on the original mixes
that Frankie and Eric produced in 2012 which still sound just as fresh today.
Sami Dee serves up a brilliant edit of the Director’s Cut Mix while Frankie’s
own Mr Director’s ‘Feels Good’ Dub takes the final slot, a cut which has
never been released on vinyl until now. Two new remixes from very different
and unique artists, both paying homage to the original, whilst bringing a
fresh new direction. Combine this with the original Director’s Cut remixes on
the B side and you’ve got the perfect package - one which would no doubt have

On
their third full-length album, 'The Signal', the Compact Disk Dummies keep a
few interesting balls in the air. They play with the opinions and
expectations of the outside world, while also confronting their own desires
and doubts. This is aptly depicted on the cover with a table, a bell, two
brothers and an impatient crowd: who is waiting for whom? The album is as
diverse as its cover is surprising. In a mix of styles and influences ranging
from retro house to funk, Lennert and Janus Coorevits demonstrate their
versatility. Following their scintillating performances at Rock Werchter and
Pukkelpop, and the success of the radio hits 'There's No Sex Without You' and
'fomo', 'The Signal' marks the start of a new era for the Dummies. Lennert
notes, "Pfff, I would think about everything indefinitely. And I'm not
the only one, I notice. Stuck in a kind of limbo, a state of uncertainty,
surrounded by signals, but still feeling a certain fear of following the
signal." On 'The Signal', 'fomo' dissects human desire, reaching for the
unattainable. 'Where We Go (Calypso)' is like the shipwreck no one wants. And
in the title track, the female lead character finds herself in a toxic
relationship, the signs of which are obvious, at least to the outside world.
While the content of 'The Signal' revolves around doubt, contemplation and
acting or not acting, the musical interpretation is in direct opposition to
that. The Compact Disk Dummies do not doubt; they hold their heads up and
their chests out. With certainty, they mix everything that excites them
musically into the blender, without grinding the identity of the Dummies
themselves; actually enriching it instead. The retro house of 'Solàr' (a song
about Louis the Fourteenth? Why not) flows into the rampant funk of 'Ballet
Dancer' before expanding into 'Underwater'. In every track, you sense the
long road the Coorevits brothers have travelled since their breakthrough -
and their then angular electro-punk. This third album is Lennert and Janus' most
sophisticated work in the expanding universe of the Compact Disk Dummies. In
addition to being a mix of styles, 'The Signal' is also a mix of
collaborations. There is the French touch of mixer Michael Declerck and
mastering engineer Alex Gopher. There is the Dutch input of Wieger Hoogendorp
(Goldband) and Jens Van Der Meij (Froukje). Beautiful string sections are
provided by Wietse Meys and Reinhard Vanbergen, bass licks by Boris Van
Overschee and backing vocals by Isolde Lasoen and Judith Okon, among others.
Producer Jasper Maekelberg always kept an eye on things. And again, for the
third album in a row, after 'Mess With Us' (2013) and 'Neon Fever Dream'
(2020), artist Athos Burez also provided the artwork for 'The Signal'. But
however international the music sounds, however great the contributions from
other top artists, 'The Signal' remains largely the work of the Dummies, with
Lennert as vocalist, lyricist and multi-instrumentalist, and Janus as
engineer, producer and all-around tech wizard. The album was not made in New
York, Tokyo or Berlin, but in Desselgem. Studio 87, the Coorevits family's
garage converted into a studio, remains Ali Baba's cave for the Compact Disk
Dummies. In their studio crammed with synths, percussion and guitars, Lennert
and Janus could not ignore the signal: time to smash it! |

A
quietly influential figure among electronic and experimental circles since
the late 90s, Berlin based sound artist Hanno Leichtmann has been developing
a sprawling and idiosyncratic vision both as a creator and curator. With a
keen sense for charting new territories, Leichtmann's work spawns a multitude
of languages that go from delicate ambient excursions to techno explorations
or abstract sceneries on numerous sound installations, releases on such
esteemed labels like Entr'acte or The Tapeworm and collaborations with
artists like Valerio Tricoli or Jan Jelinek. A reflection of his keen sense
of discovery. Centered around the Villa Aurora Organ, an intriguing and
mostly unknown instrument built in
1928/29 by the Artcraft Organ Company in Santa Monica, California,
'Outerlands' presents a deeply personal approach to the instrument's
particular properties, very much in line with Discrepant's ethos. Consisting
of a pipe organ, a wall mounted marimba and a two octave tubular bells/chimes
ensemble, remotely controllable by MIDI, the Villa Aurora Organ's rich
palette of sounds is translated into 12 short tracks capable of conveying the
mesmerising spirits of minimalism, exotica and devotional music. Starting
with the ecstatic sound of the pipe organ, 'Lucero' sets up the hypnotic mood
for 'Outerland's excursions through moments of spiralling repetition -
'Tramonto' -, blissful contemplation - 'Sunset' or 'Notteargenta' - or
underlying tension - ‘Coperto’. 'Espera' amps up the unease, with queasy
organ tones lurking beneath marimba harmonic motifs that wouldn't sound out
of of place on some survival horror movie, while 'Miramar' or 'Revello' bring
an uncanny sense of familiarity through its repetitive melodies. Drifting
seamlessly through a variety of moods that somehow feel connected - the
outerlands are within you, if you allow yourself to let go |

Gregory
Isaacs (b.15 July 1951, Kingston, Jamaica) the Cool Ruler as he became known,
grew up in the ghetto district of Kingston Jamaica. His influences lay not
only in the American singers he heard
on the radio such as Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, but also local singers such as
Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, and John Holt. His debut release ‘Another
Heartache’ was recorded for producer Winston Sinclair and was released under
Winstons’ name in the U.K. This saw Gregory move on to work with producer
Rupie Edwards forming a vocal group called The Concords alongside two local
singers Bramwell and Penros Releasing
‘Buttoo’, I Need Your Loving’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Suffer’ as a trio on Rupies’
Success label. Then as a solo artist
with ‘Far Beyond The Valley’, ‘Too Late’ and ‘Black and White’. The latter
track becoming a big hit in the U.K. for the group Greyhound. Gregory
Isaacs always had his sights on forming his own label which he did in
1972 alongside Errol Dunkley, called
African Museum. Working out of his record shop of the same name on Chancery
Lane in Kingston town itself. Gregory carried on working with various other
producers throughout his career,work
that helped fund his own label. One of these producers was Tappa Zukie. Tappa
Zukie (b.1956 , David Sinclair, Kingston, Jamaica.) was also raised in the rough and tough areas of
Kingston Jamaica, and very much like
Gregory Isaacs found music as a way out of the tough environment in which he
was surrounded. Music seemed like the only way out of a life of crime and
gang culture. A path that Tappa Zukie found and by the mid 1970’s was
establishing himself as a named star on the DJ Roots circuit. Back home in
Jamaica he was also getting a name for his production work for other local
singers such as Prince Allah and the group Knowledge. To release his own
productions, like Gregory Isaacs, he formed his own label called `Tappa
Records’. These two artists working together was a match made in heaven and
resulted in this set of songs. Nine of these songs originally saw the light
of day in 1988 released on Tappa
Zukie’s `Tappa Records’ initially called ‘Red’. We had added some additional
material also produced by Mr Zukie around the same time to expand that
release and make their work together more of a complete story. The CD edition
of this release carries the version sides to ‘Tickle Me’ and ‘One Man Against
The World’. The title track of this release seems to suit Mr Isaacs stance
perfectly. A great set of songs worked by two of the great names in reggae.

In
a convergence of two of the most celebrated names in contemporary electronic
music, Karsten Pflum steps out on Central Processing Unit with the Liars EP.
As anyone who has followed either Pflum's work for labels such as Worm
Interface/Furthur Electronix or the Sheffield imprint's recent run of
top-quality electro joints will have expected, this coming together proves to
be a match made in heaven. What we have here is a tour de force of modern
machine music. With Liars, Pflum achieves that rare feat of making something
that is at once boundary-pushing yet also thrillingly immediate, his
attention to detail shining through with each well-placed snare hit or
leftfield structural choice. Equally apt for home listening or dancefloor
deployment, Liars is a delight for heads and hedonists alike. Constantly
evolving while also cleaving to a relentless groove throughout, opener 'WAN1'
is a brilliant scene-setter for Liars. The track slinks between sections of
seething post-Drexciyan acid and eerie vignettes which balance out haunted
house synth licks with the sort of punishing bass blasts that recall early
grime classics like Youngstar's 'Pulse X'. A sly shift of key halfway through
the track only serves to redouble 'WAN1's restless brilliance. After 'WAN1',
'LOLA' represents something of a gear-switch. The track's wiggly opening
bassline is a red herring - make no mistake that we're fully into braindance
territory on this one, the drums skittering across the mix as Pflum fills the
track out with jungle-adjacent delays and softly insistent synth pads. As
'LOLA' goes on, blurts of synth and some stiffening in the drum work pushes
the track into pure rhythm workout territory. First B-side 'MOUSFOLK'
somewhat splits the difference between Liars' A-sides. This track has 'WAN1's
unyielding stomp and prominent acid bass line, but the helter-skelter drum
breaks and wandering keyboard lines are very much pulling from 'LOLA's zanier
energy. As with the other joints here, 'MOUSFOLK' is elevated by Pflum's
composerly touch, the Dane frequently throwing in new sonic tidbits - a
skippy snare tattoo, a single-note synth loop which sounds like a hovering
spaceship - that reinvigorate the mix. Pflum's musicality is at the fore once
more on closer 'BALM'. For the first section of 'BALM', a rich and sombre
keyboard fugue, you'd be hard pressed to say whether you're listening to a
producer of club music or a contemporary classical maestro. The way Pflum
builds this central motif up with deft broken-beat drum programming, a
wheezing synth countermelody and distant vocal sighs is equally delightful,
the whole track coming off like a kindred spirit of the electronica-infused
experiments on Radiohead's 2000 masterwork Kid A. A brilliantly unorthodox
collection of electro-braindance hybrids, Liars is a barnstorming Central

One stride into 2024 with a fresh four-track EP that once again showcases
their unique take on techno with three new versions of classic tracks
alongside an all-new cut. Detroit's legendary Burden Brothers had a big 2023
that saw them release their superb Never On Sunday album, which was a nod to
their 90s downtempo project of the same name. The bumper collection traversed
deep techno, house, and tech in their usual inimitable style while the pair
themselves continued to push techno forward with their incomparable live show
at the world's most notable clubs and festivals. They now show that their
creative reserves continue to run deep with four more essential tracks. The
first one is a new Mothership Remix of 'Price We Pay' with long-time vocal collaborator
Karina Mia. The original appeared on Never on Sunday and this version comes
on strong with vast rubbery kicks powering a deep and seductive groove. Muted
synths roam down low while twinkling melodies fall from above next to the
controlled, soulful vocal. The superb 'Mirror Image' is a new track that
rides a heavy broken beat. Downtempo chords are melancholic but stirring and
have a dramatic sense of finality to them. 'A Better Tomorrow' also gets a
new Mothership Mix following its original release on the Burn It Down album
back in 2015. Here it is a surging cut with funky guitar riffs and bleeping
synth sequences that bring to life the thundering low end. It's a hi-tech and
soulful fusion of the organic and the synthetic that will blow the roof off.
Last of all is a Mothership Instruments version of 'Price We Pay' that powers
along on thudding drums with edgy synth stabs riding up and down the scales.
Deft keys shine and twinkle and signature Octave One arps break out at the
midpoint to take things to a higher level. These are four more classic techno

Polo returns to Livity Sound with an EP that moves beyond the UK funky styles
he established alongside Tribal Brothers on The Link Up EP in 2021. Through
his productions and steady online radio presence, the Bristol-based producer

has been quickly rising to prominence within contemporary electronic music,
and, arguably, one of her most enticing feats is her ability to make the
minimal, electro and tech house genres she navigates her own by injecting
them with a unique sense of melody. On "The Best EP", the Chengdu
based artist shows she can not only write memorable hooks but can do so while
covering a broad array of registers. "Nightdreaming" is a moody
builder: although new, sturdily patched layers keep being introduced and the
pace never slows down, a sense of restraint remains. This atmosphere quickly
changes on "Satisfy", which, with its tapestry of indeterminate
arpeggios and EBM-evoking vocals, takes a nervous turn. "The Best"
on the B-side is a slab of vigor tailored for the peak time. Set to an
effective bass groove, modulated chords, white noise sweeps, delicately mixed
moans and bright pads nearly trip one over another. On "Crash Landing On
Nimas" B.AI , together with Diego Santana, unleashes a batch of detuned
and portamento heavy square wave patterns. The EP, diverse yet balanced, ends
on a note so ominous... the contrast with how bright we imagine the future
for this maverick talent could not be starker |
