Yip Man is one Al Nero - a Scot
living in China - and Cock of the North continues his escapades of joyful
abandon, with the pervasive sense of fun that Nero has been channelling since
his debut album, 2016's Braw Power, and follow up, Pure, Zen Ken?, in 2019.
Heralded as, "a power-pop genius" by BBC Radio Scotland's Vic
Galloway, Yip Man's talent for hooks and ability to sculpt complex rhythm and
harmony into digestible chunks of unashamed pop is his herculean strength.
Three albums in, he's a well/seasoned songwriter and Cock of the North is
further evidence that he is working at the top of his game, stuffed full of
structural twists and turns, razor-sharp riffs, and deeply satisfying
choruses. This could be Yip Man's most personal collection to date.
Lyrically, there's something heavier, angrier and sadder woven through the

2013 "mini-LP" Healing, Weird Owl are back in 2015 with a
full-length LP entitled Interstellar Skeletal, once again being released by a
Recordings, Ltd. For the first time in their ten-year history, Weird Owl have
kept the same lineup for consecutive releases, and Interstellar Skeletal
reveals further explorations into the psychic canyons mined on Healing.
Rather than scrapping the mission and returning to base for debriefing before
attempting a relaunch, Weird Owls strange sonic rocketry has ventured ever
deeper into the vast starry expanse, and their transmissions back to Earth
have grown ever freakier as a result. Their psychedelic postcards are written
in the cosmic breathiness of the synthesizer and the alien ululations of a
guitar tuned to secret frequencies, rumbling through the ages on illuminated
rhythmic grids. Each track on Interstellar Skeletal serves as an
interdimensional portal to free zones beyond the usual terrestrial veil,
whether it is via odd jungle shamanism ("Silver Ziggurats"), the
WWII bomber as spiritual metaphor ("Flying Fortress"), death

Colombia Christian punk band Grupo San Francisko De Assis- first single
"Donde Esta El Kamino". Born during the Colombian Christian punk'
boom of the early 2000-s, SFA quickly established themselves as a mainstay of
the burgeoning scene, exploding in the coastal working class towns of
Barranquilla and Santa Marta. With its ironic/not/ironic lyrics and punk not
punk attitude to the Christian way of life, SFA managed to concoct an unique
brand of punk rock that eventually crossed over its original Christian values
making them a cult band for Christian and non/Christian sub cultures of the
time. We-re now proudly re/releasing this almost impossible to find first
single, with its original 7" artwork, so new modern audiences can be

On
this 4th album the band stretch confidently into new territory while
featuring all the carefully constructed pop handicraft we've come to expect
from these Pacific Northwest lads. Working from a makeshift studio in the
wilds of Snohomish, Washington, with fabled grunge producer Chris Hanzsek ,
the band recorded 11 songs over 4 days. Longtime fans will still recognise
the band's upbeat sound set against often bittersweet storytelling, but
there's also a darker, more world/weary undercurrent. The lead track
¶hreadbare' sets the tone with its Shins/esque beat and close/up intima/cy,
followed by a powerful pushme/pull/you between the verses and choruses, sweet
and sad. ¶he Pull of the Tides' evokes bands like The Ocean Blue and The
Softies and sets up one of the album's more subtle tracks, ike Cinnamon,'
which flips the dynamic between music and lyrics with its brooding backdrop.
Side two's opener, ear Madeline,' is vintage Math and Physics Club with
intertwining guitars and soft brushes beautifully set against one of the
band's more poignant vignettes. The mood shifts to agitation with ¶ake a
Number' which paints a more insidious type of darkness, fueled by its
duelling guitar riffs and percussive flourishes. The album's title is also
pulled from one of its lyrics. The album closes in characteristic economy
with rive to You' which features an arrangement stripped down to simply two
guitars and a lilting melody, accented with subtle organ. It's a fitting end
note that reaches back to the band's earlier days and leaves us feeling a bit
more sweet than bitter, which seems just about right. Math and Physics Club

Hypnotone's
iconic self titled mini album reissued! Originally released by Creation
Records in 1991, long out of print and now reissued, meticulously remastered
and pressed onto pristine white vinyl. Exclusive liner notes by band member
Tony Martin "The Hypnotone Story: From Manchester to Creation" and
including after hours favorite "Sub" and Balearic hit "Dream
Beam" featuring vocals by Denise Johnson. Formed in the vibrant milieu
of Manchester's legendary Hacienda nightclub, Hypnotone emerged from the
creative partnership of Tony Martin and Martin Mittler. Tony, initially
involved as the in-house lighting designer, and Mittler, a bar staff member,
fused their interests and talents amid the fervor of the late '80s Acid House
movement that pulsated through the club. Their musical venture began
earnestly after an introduction to Alan McGee, head of Creation Records. This
connection would soon lead to a record deal, propelling Hypnotone into the
heart of the emerging electronic dance music scene, releasing 2 albums,
multiple singles and standout remixes for artists such as Primal Scream,
Sheer Taft, and The Lilac Time. With Creation Records' support, Hypnotone
crafted their unique sound combining state-of-the-art digital samplers like
the Akai S1000 with a collection of classic analog synths. Their debut self
titled mini album includes after hours favorite "Sub" and Balearic
hit "Dream Beam" featuring vocals by Denise Johnson. Hypnotone not
only shaped their distinct sonic footprint but also influenced the broader

Scott). Dizzy Mandjeku is considered a living guitar legend. The guitar riff
from Stromae’s Papaoutai, ten years on tour with Zap Mama and besties with
Baloji. Over the years he has built up an entire repertoire with the greats
of Congolese rumba. Cuban rumba was vibrant in Congo and it didn’t take long
before traditional elements started to blend with modern instruments. With
Franco Luambo and his band T.P.O.K. Jazz at the forefront, the music evolved
into a brand new style called Rumba Odemba. Dizzy, having been a member of
the T.P.O.K. Jazz later founded the Odemba OK Allstars in Brussels in order
to keep th unique ‘Rumba Odemba’ alive. As an hommage to Franco Luambo, Dizzy
took six of songs he used to play with him and interweaved them into two
medleys: ‘Odemba #1’ and ‘Odemba #2’. "Odemba Nostalgie - Rumba

Debut
record from Group Zero *Cathal Cully / Girls Names(. Using synthesizers and
drum machines, -Structures And Lights- glistens with subtle Euro
sophistication / pairing cold/wave optimism alongside freaky and brutal
tracks for the more open/minded DJs and dancefloors. Written, recorded and
mixed intermittently over four years, the narrative of tructures And Light'
is bound by a deepening connec/tion with electronics, instrumentation, and
the studio. Initially, it was for his personal consumption alone / selfishly
indulgent. In fact, this first collection of Group Zero music was thought to
be eternally lost and all but forgotten until a chance conversation with
Touch Sensitive led to the tracks being salvaged and subsequently re/stored.
The genesis of this newly discovered musical freedom coincided with a viewing
of yramid of Light' by Heinz Mack from the post/war Dusseldorf based Group
Zero art movement which resonated deeply. "It stirred up questions and
emotions which I could not get from a book or a screen. It was the direct
relation between me, the light and the physical object hanging on the wall.
New moments of beauty locked in the memory. I was in awe." Cully was
also taking influence from a range of contemporary elec/tronic producers / on
labels such as LIES, Diagonal, Optimo Music, Blackest Ever Black, and PAN>
"These records felt as much in keeping with post/punk traditions and my
own DIY background whilst tapping into the primitive ideas of masters such as
Cluster, Suicide, Malaria! and the proto/techno of pre/club music." Just
as a structure obscures or reflects light furnishing us with new ways of
seeing< the propulsive rhythms in -Structures And Light' reveal subtle
differences on each repeated cycle. This is music to go away from and travel

Keith
Hudson was a one-of-a-kind musical innovator with an impeccable track record
from the start: his first studio recording involved former Skatalites, and
his earliest releases provided solid-gold hits for Ken Boothe (“Old Fashioned
Way”, 1967), John Holt, Delroy Wilson, U-Roy and the others. Keith Hudson,
who temporarily worked as a dentist in the ghettos of Kingston, emigrated to
New York City in 1976 and died there prematurely in 1984. He is best known
for his work as a producer for artists such as U-Roy, Big Youth, Ken Boothe
and Horace Andy and within short order Hudson brought his all-round talent to
full fruition. In 1974, he produced two ground-breaking albums. “Pick A Dub”
was one of the first official dub albums ever, and is still considered to be
one of the greatest moments of Jamaican music. In addition, the unique “Flesh
Of My Skin, Blood Of My Blood” became the first concept album in reggae
history. Thematically dedicated entirely to black history, this masterpiece
captivates with an atmosphere that is as dark as it is deeply spiritual,
charged by Hudson’s eccentric vocals. In 1981, he created the dub masterpiece
“Playing It Cool, Playing It Right” which he produced with the help of
Wackie’s founder and mastermind Lloyd ‘Bullywackie’ Barnes. It remained the
only collaboration between the two producers. Hudson decided to release it on
his own label Joint International as he has done on his previous releases.
The album continues Hudson’s psycho-acoustic journey into the abyss of existence
and has the power to overwhelm the listener with the beauty of artistic
self-empowerment. “Too Much Formula” sings Hudson, whose voice occasionally
recalls Sly Stone, “Darkest Night” answers an echoing background chorus found
elsewhere on the track “California”. Hudson’s production techniques are
fascinating on this album. We often hear a kind of flashing-whip sound on the
snare, which adds dynamics to the whole album. Rarely has a dub record
sounded so electrifying, with radical spatial sound spreading out in all
directions and rarely has it been as crystal clear, with warm bass and
echophonic treatments as contained within these 30 minutes of music. 43 years
after its first release and 20 years after its last re-release on the
German-British label Basic Replay (Basic Channel/Honest Jon’s), “Playing It
Cool, Playing It Right” is now finally available again via Week-End Records,
with a newly revised master and a rare interview with Lloyd ‘Bullywackie’
Barnes, talking on the making of this amazing album |

Next
up on Aris is a particularly special one - Ireland's first electronic music
12"- Carrier Frequency's Telecaster Man, a particularly Irish take on
the acid house sounds of the late 80's, that still does the job 35 years
later. "A nine minute tune with two chords, it's just f-ckin' madness
mostly - distortion and drum machines." simply put by one of the artist
himself, but it's much more really. The record originally released in 1989
was a collaborative effort featuring the talents of Mr. Spring, Leo O'Kelly
of 70's folk heroes Tir Na nOg, and Trevor Knight of 80s synth pop band Auto
Da Fe, Mr. Spring, a veteran of pirate radio since his early teens and the
local go to studio guy for dreamers and the Depeche Mode and Talk Talk clones
of the time, spearheaded the project. Drawing from his extensive experience
and technical prowess, Spring had already established his own studio in 1987,
equipped with state-of-the-art gear including an Atari sequencer and an Akai
s900 sampler. Joining Spring in this creative endeavor were Leo O'Kelly and
Trevor Knight, both esteemed musicians with diverse backgrounds. O'Kelly,
known for his pioneering work with 70s folk outfit Tir Na nog, brought his
unique blend of folk and electronic influences to the table and Knight, a
seasoned performer with roots in jazz fusion and new wave. Spring had met
them while Djing before one of their gigs and was immediately taken with
Telecaster Man. They decided to work together on it as Spring says "We
wanted to get a Cabaret Voltaire sound to it and have a bit of fun."
Fueled by a shared passion for experimentation and sonic exploration and
inspired by the dynamic energy of the club scene and the rapidly evolving
sounds of electronic music, the late-night recording sessions in Spring's
studio characterized by spontaneity and innovation. The result of their
collaboration was "Telecaster Man," a nine-minute tour de force
combining distorted guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and pulsating synthesizers. The
12 inch comes with the original and Sinewave mixes plus a new Mr. Spring
remix from the original multi tracks rounding it out with the replication

Huismann drops fourth essential release on Mutual Rytm with 'Catharsis',

you can judge an artist's quality by the company they keep, then FaltyDL is
up there with the best of them. The label history of the producer known to
his friends as Drew Lustman reads like a "who's who" of 21st
century electronic music imprints - Ninja Tune, Unknown to the Unknown,
Planet Mu, Studio Barnhus, the list goes on. In the Wake of Wolves proves to
be both a great match for CPU and also further evidence of the label's
burgeoning sonic palette. While CPU has built its reputation on top quality
electro joints, recent releases have delivered adventurous electronica
experiments (Proswell'sPeople Are Giving And Receiving Thanks At Incredible
Speeds), hard-wired breakbeat techno (Baby T'sI Against I) and golden-age
synth explorations (twenty-fifth anniversary reissues of Bochum Welt'sDesktop
RoboticsandFeelings on a Screen, both of which first emerged via the
legendary Rephlex Records).In the Wake of Wolvestakes things further still -
this is a brilliantly genre-voracious record, one which marries the rhythmic
cut-and-thrust that we have long known FaltyDL for with all manner of
adventurous stylistic choices. Those familiar with the FaltyDL experience
will recognise the trademark blend of synthetic grit and harmonious softness
in album opener 'I Need You'. This could pass for Four Tet or even Hannah
Diamond at points, the steady build of pulsing synths and looped vocals
recalling a more mysterious version of the PC Music sound. 'I Need You'
stands shoulder-to-shoulder with any of FaltyDL's other great atmospheric
album openers - no small feat given the competition. 'Further', the following
number, is yin to 'I Need You's yang. This is a pulsating track which
gleefully skitters between machine-funk, tubing darkside bass and breakcore-adjacent
drum programming, all of which is peppered with some genuinely beautiful work
in the higher synths. 'Further' sets the scene for several of the more
club-facing cuts here. 'Minds Protection' similarly features all manner of
strange percussive sounds to surprise the ear, and it also boasts a thrilling
mid-section in which the bottom falls out the track to incorporate a short
snippet of blown-out junglism. With its tunnelling low-end and clattering
drums, 'Full Spectrum' kicks off a delightful run of grime-influenced joints
which take cues from Mr. Mitch, Logos and many of those other producers who
took the Eski sound to exciting new places in the 2010s. 'Forget Me Not', the
album's longest track which is placed three spots from the end, feels like
the record's climactic point - a pitter-patter post-house joint that has a
hint of Caribou in its DNA, it'll take the clubs by storm. But as much as
FaltyDL may consistently bring the heat in terms of the beat programming, the
thing which has long marked Lustman out as a special talent is the musicality
of his compositions. No matter how much drums clatter or bass bangs, FaltyDL
always hooks the ear back in with a sonorous synth or pleasing nugget of
melody. Nowhere is this more apparent than onIn the Wake of Wolves' more
weightless numbers, each startling in their prettiness. 'Half Spectrum' is a
new-era beat track packed full of ear candy; the keening keys of 'GasGas' are
potent with feeling; and on the album's closer, the evocatively-titled 'Mila
Stans In A Meadow For The First Time Eating Strawberries', we get a gorgeous
synth vignette that joins the dots between the modern mastery of Yung Sherman
and the most emotionally affecting moments of Aphex's Twin's catalogue. At
once wistful and hopeful, archival and futuristic, FaltyDL's brilliantly
unpredictableIn the Wake of Wolvesis a feather in the cap for both this

Three
years in the making, Livity Sound alumni Azu Tiwaline and Forest Drive West
combine their distinct but compatible styles into an EP of advanced, reduced
soundsystem immersion. The idea for the collaboration took shape not long
after Tiwaline’s first Livity release, the Magnetic Service EP, and the pair
took time to settle on a sound set which now shapes out Fluids In Motion.
Drawing on a cohesive palette, the tracks they pieced together in a remote
exchange between Tunisia and the UK explored a variety of tempos and rhythms
ranging from pure ambience through to spring-loaded 4/4, with a focus on
minimalism and dub-spirited spatial sound design. The end result naturally
evolves from each artist’s existing work, matching subtlety and space with
intricate detail to present a complete, considered release that runs as deep
as an album over the course of four tracks. Livity Sound is a label set up by
Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK
techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It

Lewis recorded various tracks with his brother Paul Lewis, for Lee Perry in
the mid 1970’s at Black Ark studio JA, most notable track: ‘Ethiopian Land’.
Here he features on an observational Roots Vocal track. The tracks date from
the late 90’s and have previously been released on vinyl, now deleted.
Alternate versions of the tracks can be found on the ISR Rootspective CD

this new project, their fourth full-length work, Tupperwear completely
departs from the "stylish" electronics and trends to delve into a
profound exploration of the fundamentals of music. It involves a quest or even a game through
the extrapolation of geometry into various musical parameters, encompassing
classical aspects like pitch, timbre, rhythm, intensity, etc., as well as
noise, textures, or the implicit mathematics in natural or irrational elements.
Pentagonono delves into cosmology and nature. It is a musical approach
without prejudices to basic numerology that un-veils the universe, the
harmonic scale, the number e, and logarithmic spirals. The golden ratio (phi)
and the omnipresent number pi are also explored. Geometric shapes,
proportions, and divisions of vibrating elements are transmitted through the
air, internalized by humans, and transformed into music. Following in the
footsteps of previous sound explorers from various spatial and temporal
origins such as Gamelan music with its infinite polyrhythmic replication,
Psychedelia, Serialism, Musique Concre`te, Bach, or J Dilla, this album
presents itself as a materialization of ideas and concerns that, while
already present in the band's musical understanding, are now brought to the

Truly
psychedelic and damaged, Wolf Eyes favourite new group. Limited 180g Clear vinyl (500 copies

hand-painted art insert (by the band). December 2012 I showed up totally
exhausted in Vancouver BC after touring stupidly and relentlessly for however
many straight months and got a job at a call centre raising money for the Red
Cross. It was a scent free office but one time this woman cooked a piece of
fish in the microwave for 10 minutes on low and hot boxed the whole office -
we got sent home early no pay. There was the other woman I named the Call
Centre Coltrane because her pitch and routine usually involved improvised
flights of fancy that went off in both directions at once somehow landing
back down with a credit card number and a donation. I used to sleep under the
desk. I was there a few months and at the time I reconnected with John
Brennan who I had played with briefly in Montreal at the Mutek Festival. In
Montreal John was running an experimental music night at a burrito shop
downtown called Garbage Night. While in Vancouver I began connecting with the
music scene there and would go hang out with the Shearing Pinx lads who I think
lived with Sydney the bass player at the time. I knew Nic and Jer from an
AIDS Wolf Tour and was so stoked to get to know them both better. I really fell in love with that era of
Vancouver's music scene. Fast Forward to today. 2024 Actually it was the
dying days of 2023 but you get it and John asks if I'll sit in with Earth
Ball and I keep thinking about Earth Balance, the vegan butter everyone eats
here. I brought my aching bones and my ipads on the beautiful ferry named the
Queen of Oak Bay and out to Nanaimo BC, home of the nanaimo bar (a dessert
treat - special to this region - that seems to be more popularly found under
the weird glass sneeze guards in office building deli's out east in
Ontario.... anyhoops ). No one in Nanaimo wants to talk to me about the
famous treat. I asked a couple of people. Silence. Nanaimo is like London,
Ontario but more fried and by the sea. The town is filled with blown out old
sea dawgs with tin coffee pots and loose leaf tobacco, then there's the usual
streetfolk you find in this part of the Canadian Pacific Northwest and a
bunch of bohemians who I guess have left Vancouver behind - that fine city
having become uninhabitable for those not making over 100k a year. And then up
the way are all the retirees. Yup Nanaimo is a strange one. They mined the
shit out of this region and Nanaimo is surely haunted by those buried in
mining shafts or maimed by the heavy machinery or blown up by accident in the
explosives store house. And when Earth Ball fire up the amps in Izzy and
Jer's basement you can hear the voices of the ghosts hum through electrical
lines and out the speakers, Kellen's hued feedback, Izy's sturdy basslines,
Jer's paperbag guitar tone and rumble pack zaps, Liam's (aka the Kid) sheets
of sound and Brennen's multidirectional drums. You wouldn't guess Earth Ball
was auto-composing and from what my rat brain can tell - the lyrics are
improvised too...Improvising lyrics and singing them is the hardest thing to
do in all of music.. Izzy and Jer are pros. And their attitudes are pro too.
The live show is scorched and without naming names they've been known to make
headliners nervous. Lucky ones will
get to see them live as they tour this beast of a record entitled ‘It’s
Yours’ (out May 17th on Upset The Rhythm) and I hope I'm one of them. But now
you, fan of fun but totally fucked up music, have the opportunity to Ball
with them thanks to Upset The Rhythm. Enjoy |
