These are the bedrocks of the Midnight Drive ethos and sound. A label shining
a light on overlooked or unheralded creations and respectfully reissuing them
for the contemporary audience. A label that respects and understands the
connection between these disparate and sometimes forgotten forms of musical
expression and celebrates them. Midnight Drive are extremely proud to
reintroduce the world to the sublime after-hours, cult downtempo sounds of
Belgian duo Pieter Kuyl and Jan Van Den Bergh aka Mappa Mundi. Mappa Mundi's
sole release 'Musaics' was released on Belgium's legendary USA Import label
in 1990, riding on the wave of early trance and ambient house sounds and exploring
the same sonic terrain and worlds as The Orb, The KLF, Sun Electric and other
like minded outfits. A wonderful swirling collage or mosaic of breakbeats,
samples and new-age synth stylings, 'Musaics' is indeed a real trip. A
spontaneous late night studio concoction borne of endless takes and
experimentation between Kuyl and Van Den Bergh who both display a deep
knowledge and a shared love of different sounds from around the world. The
end result is a meditative, sprawling journey that touches on many different
styles from languid widescreen techno to frantic drum machine driven
machine-funk, all while retaining a feeling of post-rave atmospherics and
psychedelia. This is a very special record indeed, and is somewhat of a lost
gem from a very fertile and interesting period in sample based music.

Yannick
Roberts is a Dutch producer who popped onto the Freerange radar following a
rather tasty release on S3A™s excellent Sampling As An Art label. Yannick™s
own take on the deep, disco-influenced Detroit house sound spearheaded by
fellow countrymen Dam Swindle, Fouk and Nachtbraker is warm and punchy with a
big sound which feels like the perfect fit for Freerange. This four track EP
kicks off with title track I Can™t Hide From Myself and rolls along perfectly
with the help of an infectious roughed up bassline, crunchy hihats and
saturated claps. Next up we have the shuffled bumpy groove of Glorious
Illusions reminding us of early Dam Swindle complete with sampled stabs and
neck-snapping beats. Flipping over we™re treated to Femme Fatale which continues
the dusty chopped up MPC sampled vibe in fine style with looped up vocals
adding bags of extra energy. Closing out the release we have Desalniettemin
which treads a similar path but with a more jazzy approach cutting up some
classic Philly soul and reimagining it into a late-night, heads-down basement
jam |

Both
regulars of the club, arts and queer scenes of New York, Berlin and London of
the last three decades, it's surprising Wolfgang Tillmans and Honey Dijon
only met five years ago. A walk between clubs in Brooklyn resulted in the two
having a mutual interest to collaborate. Busy as both are, the wait was long,
but well worth it. This week's release of Honey Dijon's Euphoria Mix of
'Can't Escape into Space' sets the tone for what is left of this summer: Our
desire to be together, with friends and strangers, close up on dancefloors,
festivals and open airs. Honey's and Wolfgang's shared unapologetic spirit
comes alive as Dijon transforms Tillmans's original song into an electrifying
dance floor banger. As we can already sense a reawakening of our freedom
blowing in the air, even if many clubs remain closed, the two musicians' call
to come together again is euphoric and inescapable. The original version of
the song was released last winter in the midst of lockdown, accompanied by a
video showing an empty nightclub and its mirror balls performing for the
camera, filmed in 2017 by Tillmans, in pre-pandemic Fire Island. A new video

After
much industry ballyhoo garnered from their intense live set, Priestess signed
a deal in 2004 and released what is widely regarded as one of Canadas
greatest hard rock debuts ever, Hello Master. Unlike most hard rock/metal
bands that rely solely on ballast and blast to sear their message into gray
matter, Priestess had a special trick up their sleeve - they could write a
song that could walk the rope between being infectious and downright vicious.
Armed with far more hooks than your average metal band, their unique style of
driven melody with metal muscle and Marshall stack attack quickly earned them
a die-hard fan base weary of death metal grunts and metal cliches. Their
incessant touring included playing with such heavy hitters as Black Label Society,
Mastodon, Converge and Motorhead , equally comfortable sharing a stage with
Iron Maiden as they were with Di-nosaur Jr. 2007 was a watershed year for the
band with even more touring , including a support slot in the UK with
Megadeth and reaching more people when their songs "Lay Down" was
featured in Guitar Hero III : Legends Of Rock. The band spent Autumn 2008 in
Los Angeles under the watchful eye of pro-ducer David Schiffman (System Of A
Down, Mars Volta, Nine Inch Nails), recording their crowning achievement,
Prior To The Fire. If their calling card Hello Master was considered lethal,
this sophomore effort easily trumps it with a devastating display of heaving
heaviosity and a new found sense of inno-vation, on every track the band remains
hungry, fierce and focussed and let their progressive rock and hard psych

vocal harmonies remain staple to the format, un/derpinning a progressive

Darren Hayman suggested to us
that The Wave Pictures make an album with one micro-phone. Everybody together
in one room playing live into one microphone. The idea appealed to me
enormously. Its a really beautiful sound, the one microphone sound. The results
tend to be mysterious and lively, and its a very romantic way to record, too.
Its how Bill Monroe and His Bluegrass Boys did it, after all (and thats how
bluegrass music destroyed John Faheys life). I decided to write some songs as
quickly as possible and then to invite a bunch of our friends to make a
recording with The Wave Pictures on my birthday |

It’s
fair to say Wallace is one of those rare producers that has already amassed
quite the reputable back catalog in a very short space of time. Let alone in
2023 having already released two albums and a handful of Eps with labels such
as Rhythm Section, Mule Musiq and CWPT, he’s become a go-to producer for many
DJs. To some it may seem like he’s at the beginning of his career but Wallace
has been producing for over 10 years refining his sound. On Loop label boss
Moxie has been an early supporter of his, not only championing him in her DJ
sets but also having him feature heavily on her NTS show. The pair are
thrilled to be finally putting this release out into the world, showcasing
why Wallace really is, the real deal. The whole EP is filled with tons of
percussion and rhythm, pulling the listener in. Tanzanite & M’bira in
particular are undeniable groovers. Red Velvet on the other hand is something
you might expect to hear played at 5am Fabric room 1, whilst Violet is a
treat only for the vinyl heads and shows off how versatile Wallace really is
as a producer, offering something on a slower tip. Speaking of the release,
Wallace says: The A-side of Tanzanite is inspired by time spent in Africa
when I was young. My dad used to make animal programmes & one time I
tagged along for his jaunt around South Africa and Namibia. The 'M'bira'
track uses the instrument of the same name which he picked up, when out there
& the title track is inspired by a gem stone park we visited in Cape
Town. The B-side takes inspiration from recent clubbing experiences. In this
way, the EP is juxtaposed from the joyous, open air, playfulness of the A to

Riverside, In New York saw Chet Baker bring the West Coast cool jazz style to
new Manhattan surroundings. With the rhythm section of Paul Chambers and
Philly Joe Jones keeping things up-tempo and propulsive, pianist Al Haig alternating
between fill-in chords and intriguing melodies and saxophonist Johnny Giffin
trading lead flourishes with Baker himself, the LP is another winner right
through. The swinging bop is full of zest and verve on 'Hotel 49' and a
one-off rendition of Miles' 'Solar,' while some contrasting introspective
breaks are provided by 'Blue Thoughts' and 'Polka Dots And Moonbeams.' Great

First
ever career-spanning compilation of the solo work of Jowe Head, an essential
name in the birth and development of the UK's underground scene through his
recordings with Swell Maps, Television Personalities, personal projects such
as Palookas, Househunters and work under his own name. From 1981 debut album
"Pincer Movement" up to 2014 recordings by Jowe Head and The
Demi-Monde, plus previously unreleased tracks, these 20 cuts present Head's
wonderful mixture of off-kilter pop and avant-garde weirdness, like a noise
party attended by Joe Meek, Burt Bacharach and Sun Ra. A Record Store Day
2017 release. If one looks at the galaxy of stars that can be attributed as
source material for today's musical DIY/lo-fi generation, Jowe Head shines as
a true iconoclast. His 1973 addition to the avant-garage godfathers Swell
Maps added an impressionistic edge to their psychedelic punk pastiche that
drew of Max Ernst as ably as Can. Later on in The Television Personalities
and his Househunters and Palookas projects, not to mention a sprawling solo
discography, Jowe's persona injected color and livelihood into an
often-too-cool-for-school post-punk scene around Britain while still
delivering transportative sounds and open-to-the-listener interpretations.
This compendium is in itself a galaxy of sounds that will never fail to

The
Strange World of Suzie Pellet- is a hard rocking concept album featuring a
dark, unsettling and mysterious tale of future street dweller Suzie Pellet. A
feisty survivor in a ruined world, Suzie is the brainchild of Ian Miller,
fantasy&horror artist and novelist. His surreal creations have graced
book covers, graphic novels and films. Transmaniacon bring Miller-s vision to
sonic life, aided by the outstanding vocal deliveries of Lydia Lunch (a
hind/sighted Suzie) and Maya Berlin (a future -present/day- Suzie). With
-Suzie Pellet- Transmaniacon becomes more a musical collective. The core of
the band remains, hard and heavy riffing guitars, overdriven Hammond Organ
(and this time synth) but with the addition of Tom (Uncle Acid&Limb)
Mowforth on drums they are a groovier, more athletic 70-s rock beast.
Transmaniacon have taken and expanded Miller-s vision into a story in which
Pellet herself describes the dark, underworld, its characters and situations,
friends and foes, all in grisly/spoken and sung diary/like, excerpts. Lydia
Lunch was an obvious choice for the mature Pellet. For a young Susie Pellet
the role falls to Maya Berlin. With her band, Cold in Berlin delivering equal
parts Punk, Doom and Goth over their three highly acclaimed albums, she was
perfect. And Suzie gives her the opportunity to expand her vocal *and
theatrical( talents in Grace Slick or Julie Driscoll or even Chelsea Wolfe

Hensham, Surrey in 1975, Sham 69 embraced punk after seeing the Sex Pistols,

Los
Afroins was the flagship salsa band of the obscure but beloved INS label from
Colombia. Their 1975 LP "Goza La Salsa" is just as hard to find as
their first record, and contains 10 bright and sassy salsa dura treasures
that light up the dance floor with their incessant rhythms, syncopated
trumpets and trombone and buoyant melodies. There are smoking covers of hits
by Panama's Bush y sus Magníficos ('Salsa Al Pindin') and Bronx timbalero
Orlando Marín and His Orchestra ('Está De Bala') as well as updated
renditions of old Cuban chestnuts 'La Masacre' (written by Joseíto Fernández
of 'Guantanamera' fame) and 'Matusa' (originally titled 'Macusa', composed by
Francisco Repilado aka Compay Segundo). The entire record makes for a very
tasty and satisfying party platter filled with guaguancó, mozambique,
pachanga, descarga and bolero that deserves to be more accessible and better
known by today's fans of Colombian salsa who may have heard of The Latin
Brothers or Sonora Carruseles, but have yet to discover the short/lived but
highly sought after Los Afroins. "Goza La Salsa" is presented here
in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl |

Renaissance anthem, finding favour with all their key DJs. However, it became
synonymous with one man in particular, namely, John Digweed, who cemented the
track™s legendary status when he included it on his Journeys By DJ
compilation the following year. Even today he™s been known to slide it into
the mix, most recently episode 10 of his legendary Bunker streams. And the
track has other contemporary fans too; a certain Mr. Plex was heard dropping
it in 2020. In short, it™s one of those records that™s stood the test of time
and grown in stature year on year. Now, its evolution takes yet another step

three years ago, "Matasuna Records" released a hot Latin 45 feat.
two songs by the Venezuelan band "Phirpo y sus Caribes", led by
musician, arranger and conductor "Porfi Jiménez". Now, fortunately,
two more tracks from the band's only album, "Parrilla Caliente",
are being reissued on vinyl by Matasuna - and for the first time, on a
7-inch! The original pressing of the 1972 album on "Philips" is a
rare and valuable collector's item. Officially licensed by the family of the
late musician. Don't miss this gem!. "Y Esa Pava Que?" on the
A-side of the single is an explosive Latin funk joint written by Porfi
Jiménez. An irresistible groover, opulently and densely orchestrated with
virtuoso musicians showing off their musicality. Heavy drums, powerful horns,
funky & slightly psychedelic keys & guitars are the basic
ingredients, enriched with solo parts and vocal interludes. A real treat! The
B-side features "Pa' Los Rumbero", a cover version of the song by
New York Latin maestro "Tito Puente". In 1972, Puente recorded a
great new version of his original 1955 composition. Phirpo y sus Caribes used
this new version as the basis for their cover, compressing the Puente song to
about two and a half minutes. The result is an energetic and upbeat song that
proves that Porfi Jiménez and his bandmates were among the continent's finest
musicians. Vamos que la rumba ya va empezar! Artist info: "Porfi Jiménez",
whose real name was "Porfirio Jiménez Núñez", was born in 1928 in
Hato Mayor del Rey in the "Dominican Republic". He began his
musical training at the early age of 9. After studying at the Municipal
Academy of Music he became a member of an orchestra at the radio station
"Voz Dominicana". Its director "Enrico Cabiatti"
introduced him to the art of arranging. Due to the Trujillo dictatorship, he
left the country in 1954 and went to "Venezuela", where the young
musician became famous as a trumpeter and played in the most important groups
of the time. The quality of his original arrangements opened the doors of the
most famous record companies of the time in Venezuela. Porfi also became one
of the most outstanding composers and arrangers of those years, rebuilding
Cuban "José Pagé's" Cuban label "Velvet" in Venezuela and
working for all the label's national and international singers. At the end of
the 50's until the beginning of the 60's, he worked in orchestras of various
TV stations in the Venezuelan capital Caracas. In 1963, Jiménez founded his
own orchestra, which became known as one of the most important musical groups
in Venezuela throughout Latin America. In the 70's, musical transformations
resulted from the emergence of new musical styles & rhythms. Porfi
Jimenez, as a contemporary artist and passionate jazzman, began to
incorporate new musical elements into his songs that distanced him from the
prevailing commercial style |

EP for 2023, following their debut release on their mothership label From
Another Mind. The German duo's latest release, 'Basic Instinct', is a
collection of five dancefloor anthems that provide the perfect soundtrack for
any moment in a set. The EP features their signature die-cut cover and
includes a digital bonus track. 'Basic Instinct' is the 12th installment of
their Mutual Rytm label and showcases the pair's exceptional production
skills and innovative approach to electronic music, with a mix of old and new
school flavors, vivid drum programming, organic percussion and captivating
melodic elements. The A-side kicks off with their signature track 'Eraser',
which blends crisp drums with warm sub-bass and piercing synth stabs.
"Dancer in the Dark" takes a deeper dive into late-night territory,
combining lush dub-influenced synths with a rolling acid bassline.
"Disturbing Behaviour" closes the A-side and shows why the 303 has
become an iconic tool for producers. Despite the sirens dominating around the
breakdowns, the simple two-tone acid stab is the defining element of the
track, complemented by amen-break leaning drums that hint at a UK rave direction.
The B-side goes in a different direction, with 'Memories of Nobody' taking a
filtered and less aggressive approach, as echoing dub pads gather around a
growling bassline and kick drum combination, topped off by brushed hats. The
EP concludes with 'The Last Seduction', a track that reveals the full organic
breadth of the previously hinted at Amen break. The fusion of said amen break
with the warmth and familiarity of waxing and waning pads is reminiscent of

favourite. The sizzling drums & percussion blend perfectly with the
pulsating bassline that allows Wayne to scat and weave his way into the
blissed out yet uptempo jazzy keys. For those thinking this would be an even
better track if it had a flute solo, we’ve got you covered! with Dave Lee’s
‘Flute Reboot’ for that maximum Latin edged jazz-funk feel. On the flip two
people who need not introducing, Louie Vega & Josh Milan get frenzied on
the drums and piano, as they up the ante and deliver a jazz dance fusion
clocking in at 9 minutes. Their mix really works up a sweat in the second
half as the groove and scatting lock together for an intense rhythmic
workout. All in all a very impressive outing |

When
Jazz Meets Italo-Disco. Two Italian legends meet and deliver a unique
contemporary jazz-house fusion! ''Stefano Cantini is a well-known saxophonist
in the Italian and international jazz scene. In recent years he has focused
on a project called Living Coltrane with Ares Tavolazzi, Francesco Maccianti
and Piero Borri. Stefano and Maurizio Dami (Alexander Robotnick) had worked
together for a while in the mid '80s and Stefano also played on GMM's album
(''Love Supreme'' is the best known track). Since then, Stefano has focused
totally on Jazz whilst Maurizio Dami produced World Music in the '90s and
later on, under the artist name Alexander Robotnick, retrieved in 2000,
turned to electronic music again, so the two musicians lost track of each
other for 40 years. Robotnick says, ''In March 2023 I received a call from a
club in Pisa, Cantiere San Bernardo. They asked me whether I could play live
with Stefano ''Cocco'' Cantini on the occasion of a special event dedicated
to Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici. I called him and he answered
enthusiastically. Shortly before the concert we rehearsed at the Follonica
Music School which he directs. He improvised with me on the bases of my live.
We liked our rehearsal and a few days later, on June 2nd 2023, we played in
Pisa with much success. So came the idea of doing something together. We
decided to produce an EP featuring 3 tracks. On some of my bases Stefano
created a harmonic texture to improvise on. I mainly took care of the
arrangement and the production. But what we play is the result of
improvisation, with hardly any editing. It's amazing how we managed to work
together so smoothly after so many years, as if we had never stopped. We
called this project 'Robocok'''. They are modal tracks with a techno approach
and harmonically open. Almost a provocation to the staticity of contemporary
dance. On ''Francocco'' and ''Frigiococco'' Stefano plays soprano sax whilst
on ''Afrococco'' he plays alto. Guglielmo Bottin took the task of making a
remix. He picked ''Francocco'' and skilfully turned it into a pure drums and
piano groove. Perfect for the dancefloor" |

Takuya
Kuroda is a Kobe-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter and musician, who was also a
longtime player for Akoya Afrobeat as well as DJ Premier's BADDER band.
Initially playing on the Japanese circuit with his trombonist brother, Takuya
went on to relocate to New York City, where he has largely remained to this
day, becoming a prominent player in the jazz scene, establishing a devoted
fan base with jazz heads across the globe. Following on from the recent 10
year anniversary vinyl re-issue of Takuya Kuroda's seminal 'Rising Son'
album, we revisit his fourth official solo album 'Midnight Crisp', originally
released in 2022 on the Worldwide Award winning UK label, First Word Records.
Here we have two new interpretations designed squarely for the dancefloor.
Firstly we head to Detroit, with Waajeed's Hi-Tech Jazz remix of 'Choy Soda'.
A pioneer in the worlds of house and hip hop alike, Waajeed's career is like
no other. From his roots designing sleeves for Slum Village, to founding
Platinum Pied Pipers, to running record labels, DJing and working with a ton
of luminaries himself, Waajeed carries the spirit of his hometown in
everything he does. This mix carries on the flavours he brought to the world
on his 'Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz' album: bumpin' broken-beat tinged jackin'
house music, this is pure heads-down music to groove to. On the flip, First
Word family, Kaidi Tatham takes on 'Dead End Dance'. Kaidi is a
deeply-prolific, hugely-revered Grammy Award-winning multi-instrumentalist
based in Belfast. One of the original pioneers of the broken beat sound, he's
worked with a ton of legends over the years, including Amy Winehouse, Soul II
Soul, Mulatu Astatke and Leroy Burgess, to most recently on various projects
with DJ Jazzy Jeff. He stays true to the original vibe and tempo of the
track, adding a phat synth bass to the mix, before switching to an uptempo
shuffle midway, in his own inimitable style & fashion. Initial support
for this release already in from selectors such as Gilles Peterson (BBC 6
Music) and Dom Servini (Jazz FM), whilst past support has included Pitchfork,
Earmilk, Brooklyn Vegan and many more. 'Midnight Crisp Remixes' will be
available upfront on vinyl-only from June 14th |
