Chilean-born
Francisco Allendes returns to Crosstown Rebels for the first time in six
years this May. Serving up the three-track What You Do, the title number has
already received global airplay via Damian Lazarus himself. Now, the full
release will be made available next month and includes a remix by US-legend
Harry Romero. A contemporary dose of four-on-the-floor house, What You Do
leaves few prisoners in its wake, as rampant drum patterns converge on a
heady combination of kicks, synths and irresistible vocals right the way
through. There™s an infectious energy to the track, paving the way for Harry
Romero™s similarly up-tempo remix. It™s feel-good, club-ready dance music at
its best, packed full of low-slung groove that opens neatly into the closing
sequence: Maratone, a stripped-back, techy cut that bears all the hallmarks
of a true Ibiza anthem. Hailing from Chile and now based in Ibiza, Francisco
Allendes is a leading light in today™s scene. Be it Loco Dice™s Desolat,
Steve Lawler™s VIVA or Damian Lazarus™ Crosstown Rebels, his productions have
graced some of the industry™s most well-respected labels. Such quality hasn™t
gone unnoticed - he picked up the ˜Best Ibiza™ DJ Award in September 2019 and
has gone on to complete several South American tours. A much loved affiliate
of ANTS, Francisco has a long standing residency at both Ushuaïa in Ibiza and
their affiliated tours, in addition to hosting the weekly radio show. Seminal
American house talent Harry Romero is a well-established figure on the
worldwide music circuit. A prominent global DJ and producer since the ˜90s,
early productions on Cutting Records and Cutting Traxx helped set the tone
for Harry™s career trajectory, opening the doors to a coveted BBC Radio 1
˜Essential Mix™ in recent years |

vinyl in black reverse-board disco bag, black & off-white geometric
artwork wraparound sticker, with embossed play:musk icon on front sleeve.
Some 14 years since last releasing, play:musik, the label founded by DJ
Flight in 2005 is back with fresh tunes and a new look for ’24! First up -
Geordie new-gen junglist, Nectax, who’s refined his style by drawing
inspiration from mid-‘90s deep atmospheric jungle and US footwork flavours.
The Body Talk EP features 4 tracks that distinctly tie together - pristinely
produced, bass heavy, future-facing music that respects the roots and
foundation. A1. Body Talk: classic
amen break fused with interesting drum edits, smooth synths, a huge vocal and
driving bassline (wait for the 2nd drop). An underground anthem thanks to Nia
Archives’ strong support. A2. Twin Turbo: bouncy footwork-jungle mixed with
fun techno vibes, tight percussion and squelchy sounds. Rolls very nicely in
the mix. Supported heavily by Sully and Mantra. B1. No Such Luck: a murky
rumbling intro with grime sound and haunting vocal leads into a
speaker-troubling drop packed with funk-fuelled breaks. Certified modern
jungle stepper and firm Flight favourite. B2. Sentinel Runner: smokey sci-fi
feel, electro b-boy stylings, and big bottom end make this the perfect EP
closing track. Recently featured in Om Unit’s great MISSIONQUEST mix series |

Men of the hour and part of the
Endless Illusion crew from Prague joins RET with a 5 tracker ranging from
Electro to wave-ish Techno. After releasing on labels like Midlight, Eidetic
and more recent Brokntoys Ladislav Zensor drops another fierce and well
executed joint. The ep kicks off with an extended acid injected electro track
called ''All Things Are Possible''. Second track ''Transgas'' continues this
threatment for the A side. The flip has a more darker perspective with
flanged hi hats and eerie atmosphere. ''Defenestrace'' contains a strange vox
going over the track from the beginning, it then quickly gains power by its
dubbed out framework. The days of EBM and newbeat comes to mind when we hear
''Straight Folded'' which sounds like its recorded straight on a tape in the
mid 80's. Last not least ''Very Fake News'' closes things of, with a driving
kick-bassline and shattering snares causing pleasure on the dancefloor. Dark
days are coming towards us |

Clear vinyl. Surfers' Choice is a
true landmark of surf rock, being the album that established the genre more
than any other release. First issued in 1962 and mostly recorded at the
Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego,
it has rollicking surf anthems like 'Surf Beat,' 'Shake 'n' Stomp,' 'Surfing
Drums' and 'Take It Off,' as well as Dale's adaptations of 'Night Owl,'
'Fanny Mae' and a strangely orchestrated take of loop John B.' With a soaring
guitar that's drenched in reverb at centre stage and Dale's gritty vocals
varying the action, this is the enduring start of surf rock and a blistering
start at that! |

Hold your body and mind belts,
and immerse yourself into a cornerstone of cosmic music in a double
remastered vinyl - one them filled with rarities - called "Crystal
Machine" by the visionary Tim Blake, English composer and synthesizer
master. Recorded in 1976/7, it remains echoing as a timeless effort, pretty
much still alive. This is a deadly serious art piece, accordingly trippy in
all its aspects, full of strangeness and sheer beauty |

Filipovich
is one of a kind. The Belarus-born, Paris-based artist works in a multitude
of media - found footage films, painting, silkscreening and performance to
name a few. It's her musical output that has caught the attention of late,
though, with Filipovich dropping a run of releases in recent years which
began with 2021's Magnificat on Time Released Sound. Filipovich takes as much
of a novel approach to her music-making as she does with her other artistic
endeavours - Magnificat was centred around treated samples of Sergei
Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil, and she's also combined classical composition
with contemporary electronic techniques on her subsequent drops. For
Idealized, Filipovich's debut on Sheffield's Central Processing Unit, she
maintains the gothic air which characterised her previous releases and
applies it to a record of widescreen contemporary techno joints. These tracks
represent something of a gear shift for CPU, a label which has long made its
name by delivering top-quality electro and machine-funk jams, but such is the
quality of Idealized that these superbly-executed techno productions are sure
to win over label fans both old and new. Idealized is very much schooled in
the German tradition of minimal/dub techno. Tracks like 'Physical', 'Wave'
and 'Dance Minor' all anchor themselves on single, steady drum pulses and
delay-drenched single-chord loops. Filipovich generally lets the central idea
of these tracks play out across several minutes while introducing
increasingly disorientating elements into the rest of the mix - wiccan
atmospherics, clashing chords, spiralling delays and so forth. It's an
approach at once respectful of Filipovich's predecessors - Basic Channel,
Deepchord, Ellen Allien and so on - but also full of idiosyncrasies and
individuality. Many of the club cuts here hardwire us into the moody, murky
environs of the darkest Berlin Basements. 'Ultra Red' rides forward on a
crisp drum machine snap, a menacing burble of bassline and an eerie
single-note synth whistle in the upper end of the mix; 'Dance Minor' shows
off a bit of KiNK in the brain-bending modular loop that waxes and wanes at
its centre; the second-half run from 'Wave' to closer 'Small Cave' travels
ever-further out into deep space - the kick drums remain insistent, yet the
textural elements are delivered with an edge and flair that evidences
Filipovich's ability to think outside the box. Filipovich's unusual methods,
and the influence of sound art and electroacoustic composition on her music,
are drawn out further when Idealized steps away from the dancefloor. 'Hydra'
comes off like a more gothic version of Pole - its central pulse draws from
dub techno but never quite settles into a danceable groove, and this beat is
combined with the kind of unnerving keyboard work that would make John
Carpenter proud. Although closer 'Small Cave' eventually locks into another
dark-room techno roller, the opening section of the track delivers a
weightless soundscape of bright, tinny chords and a scene-setting field
recording. Idealized, the first drop on Central Processing Unit from
Paris-based Belarusian Lina Filpovich, broadens the label's horizons with a
selection of finely crafted minimal/dub techno joints. RIYL: Andy Stott,
Deepchord, Ellen Allien, Moritz von Oswald |

fabric,
the iconic hub of electronic music culture, proudly announces its latest
addition to the fabric mix series: "fabric Presents The Streets".
This eagerly anticipated compilation marks a milestone in the illustrious
history of the UK institution, as they join forces to commemorate 25 years of
groundbreaking club nights and genre-defining mixes. The release is
accompanied by original material from The Streets in the form of two singles,
the first to be shared is “No Better Than Chance”. fabric Presents The
Streets" is more than just a mix; it's a sonic journey through the
pulsating veins of UK nightlife. Skinner's deft curation transcends mere
selection; from the gritty beats of underground garage and bass music to the
icy melodies of UK rap and grime, Skinner weaves together a tapestry of
sounds that encapsulates the essence of fabric's legendary atmosphere. The
compilation album will also be available in the iconic fabric CD tins. fabric
itself stands as a bastion of innovation and inclusion within the electronic
music community. For 25 years, it has been a sanctuary for music lovers, a
breeding ground for artistic evolution, and a beacon of diversity in an
ever-changing landscape. Its impact on UK nightlife cannot be overstated;
fabric is not just a club, but a cultural institution that has shaped the
tastes and trends of generations. To commemorate the 25-year journey,
fabric's labels will release a collection of exclusives. These will include
five special ‘fabric presents’ compilation releases, ‘fabric Presents
Shygirl’ was the first to be shared in March. In addition to the mix album,
fabric and The Streets unveil the brand new original single "No Better
Than Chance," an electrifying track that encapsulates the spirit of both
fabric and The Streets. “I’ve spent many nights wasted but not wasted any
nights in fabric over the years. The dedication to underground music and
innovation, the way the bodysonic bass transducers sent the sounds through
your body via your feet, the queues, the camaraderie and a real sense of
being part of something that people will remember through the haze as the
home of some of the greatest moments of their lives. When I was asked to do a
mix for the anniversary series I couldn’t wait to get on with it. fabric has
become one of the homes of bass music and that’s some of the music I’ve been
playing out the most. It’s a pleasure to follow in the footsteps of so many
incredible DJ’s in the fabric, FABRICLIVE and fabric presents series and be
part of their celebration. Here’s to many more decades of hedonism.” - Mike
Skinner. As fabric celebrates its silver jubilee, "fabric Presents The
Streets" stands as a testament to the club's enduring legacy and
commitment to pushing boundaries. This collaboration is more than a mix
album; it's a celebration of the past, present, and future of electronic
music |

Footnotes continues its busy 2024
with a collaboration that crosses the Atlantic and has been years in the
making. ‘All my Life’ brings together 2 of the finest MC’s in Drum and Bass
set against the backdrop of LSB’s unique take on Liquid Funk. All my Life
see’s T.R.A.C. rapping out the joys of being a record collector in his whilst
and Stamina sings about how he’s been searching for this all his life, a love
song where music itself is the protagonist. The B Side Vibe follow a similar
theme but rather than about the love of collecting music they trade bars
about the love of performing over subtle beats and lush string samples. The
nostalgic feel as well as the theme of both records suited a return to the
more traditional single format with an A & B side and a single 45 rpm 12?

Commissioned by the acclaimed
film director Roman Polanski, the English cult band Third Ear Band faced the
challenge in order to insert a hell of imagination and creativity to his very
own, author cinematographic version of Macbeth, a play by William Shakespeare.
The resulting 44 minutes of imaginative sounds, divided in 16 outstanding
pieces, is an astonishing example of an archaic, twisted, abstract
psychedelia, rooted on medieval and classical textures. A Monster-Munster
gem! |

Like a long drag of hashish in
the morning when the alarm clock rings in the open air, the synthesis that
works in this album is aromatic, hypnotic, luminescent. somewhere between
Hispalis and the Catalan Mediterranean. Spanish guitar and flamenco metonymies
flourish on this transitional instrumental work that ablutions in flamenco
waters, scented with folk-blues salts. This 1973 album is seminal in creating
flamenco fusion. The arid but magnetic notes of the first track on the album,
'Sardana Flamenca' delve deeper into the subconscious, which Soler recorded
on his own with his Spanish guitar, except the electric pieces where members
of the band OM helped out. Reissued on vinyl for the first time. Includes an

the world(s) of modern psych-rock music that two of their members are the

Now in color vinyl. Formed in
London in 1977 by Mark Perry and Alex Fergusson, then editors of the punk
fanzine Sniffin' Glue, Alternative TV was a post-punk group known for
incorporating reggae rhythms and pushing the boundaries of the definition of
punk towards the experimental and avant-garde. Their first album, The Image
Has Cracked, came out originally in 1978 and is a wholly unique piece of
British post-punk. Beloved by John Peel, and close confidantes of Throbbing
Gristle, Alternative TV is one of the most original and beguiling groups of
the era. This classic is reissued on 180 gram with 2 bonus tracks and a
double-sided insert |

punk rock pride, The Onyas' 1996 debut album. Defined as a shambolic collage
of alcoholic excess, smutty humour and a nihilistic attitude, this album is a
raucous journey through the heart of rebellious punk ethos. The album doesn-t
just invite you to listen< it demands that you join the mayhem. First EU

The first LP released by Lima
pianist Alfredo Linares under his own name is brimming with tropical hits
from the mid-sixties and was aimed to bring listeners up to date with the
tropical sound developments in the States, to which Linares added touches of
jazz. "El Pito" comprises guarachas, guaguancós, jazzy descargas
and, obviously, contagious boogaloos, including an outstanding version of the
J. Sabater anthem. First time reissue |

Wganda Kenya was a group formed
by Discos Fuentes under the idea of developing an African and Caribbean sound
in order to appeal to the Coste;o Colombian market and also inject a little
international exoticism into the label. This 1976 album has become a
collector's favorite waiting to be reissued, and it's not hard to understand
why since it's full of so many Afro-Funk, Congolese rumba and
Caribbean-flavored dance floor burners. Special edition reissue containing
two non-album bonus tracks from the same period that appeared on 45s and
various artist compilations, as well as an insert with liner notes. Pressed

THE SONS OF BIDO LITO are a

sinister sounding recordings. Their songs are three minute gems, sensual and

Disastroid's latest outing,
Garden Creatures, is a record about the darkness in the hidden corners of
suburban landscapes - sinister overgrown gardens, secret collections kept in
basements, the crime just beneath the surface, the pervasive loneliness under
a veneer of normalcy. Accordingly, it's a dark and atmospheric record,
trading the stripped-down approach of 2020's Mortal Fools for a thicker,
heavier, and more layered sound. Legendary producer Billy Anderson (Sleep,
Melvins, Neurosis) builds mixes that range from dark and dreamy to a thick,
sludgy crunch, slowly puling the listener through a range of sounds and
textures, making sure things stay interesting. Singer&guitarist Enver
Koneya's vocals are soulful and sometimes haunting, drifting above
Disastroid's characteristically off-kilter, grunge-influenced riffs |

answers to the questions on the origin and existence of life |

30
years of Fuse means 30 years of road paving. An ode to the past and a hint to
the future, Fuse shares this milestone with its original guests from 1994 all
the way to its fresh party goers of the past years as a promise to keep its
dance floor focused on quality music and timeless moments. In over a quarter
century, the Brussels club has stood the test of time by rooting itself in
ageless music and employing pioneering artists - large or small,
international or local - to command the decks of Belgium's longest running
dance floor. A celebration of this legacy and the renewed imprint is in
order, coming in the form of a 30 track compilation of techno's best and
brightest from around the world. One track for one year, this collection of
recordings highlights the status quo of enduring club music, beginning with a
nod to the past: a re-release of Jeff Mills iconic 'Step to Enchantment' from
1993. This glance to the past quickly shoots us forward into the current
state of techno with legendary artists like Planetary Assault Systems, DVS1,
Steffi, Rodhad, Donato Dozzy, DJ Nobu and many others who headlined the club
in recent years. Cementing itself as a respected escapist institution, Fuse
also calls on its growing local scene to prove why Brussels continues to
remain a reference in the scene even outside of its own borders |

Some
fresh exciting and adventurous techno on the new Reclaim Your City! The
well-known figures of the German and Georgian electronic scenes in the
persons of .VRIL and HVL, are on the next installment laying down a quintet
of hybrid electro and techno weapons that send us straight back to the heyday
of Rephlex and like-minded visionary ventures. All in that stark contrast
between ethereal spaciousness and steely, martial rhythms out the industrial
spectrum, 'Far Field' takes us on a voyage across the board, from
breaks-heavy machine stunts to washed-out tapestries, via EBM-laced detours
and junglistic maneuvers. Investigating the nexus zone between dance
functionality and limitless escapology, it extrapolates both artists' blends
to further immersive, hypnotic effect. Taking over the A side, .VRIL gets the
ball rolling with 'Lost Together', which sets the tone on a low-slung,
nostalgia-drenched note; combining the syncopated swagger of downtempo techno
with ambient-oid stasis and static-filled opacity. Like watching an all-metal
sun sinking past the blazing skyline. Revving up the engines, 'Fnord' feat.
RAEYN conjures up a way more muscular arsenal of big-room-ready wares, from
aggro snare salvos to anthemic synth kinetics, through that replicant-hunting
kinda vibe. One to have the Saturn rings go hula hoop, with all woofers and
brains in the vicinity melting in XTC. Shutting the A side off, 'We Believe'
returns to a lighter, more vaporous mindset but sure implements that
signature heavy swing of .VRIL, flush with textured kicks and FX-soaked arps.
True monster prog swell. Flip it over and there's HVL dishing out a textbook
example of his vortical electronic furls with the title-track, 'Far Field' -
an oneiric drift that slowly rises from its heavy-lidded slumber, ascending
towards bleepin' n bloopin' experimental effervescence as bars fly by. A
number bound to hack your body and mind into two distinct facets, and while
one dances its way frantically across the ever buzzing space/time continuum, the
other shall reach a state of healing calm and transcending ubiquity. Smoothly
shuttling us off to the upper layers of the ionosphere, 'Lancet Mxi' clenches
it on a trippy note, taxiing us midway zero-G UK bass territories and eerie
ambient abstraction. HVL's total, widescreen vision at its most unhindered,
all set at expanding your mind to yet uncharted horizons of sound and closing
the gap between two distant, estranged galaxies. A fractured headspace to
both dance and dream to. *Dressed in a fine piece of artwork courtesy of
Daniel M. Diaz, 'RYCL021' comes pressed on 180g audiophile black vinyl for
optimal playing and listening experience |

generic sleeve repress - Chontane returns to Mutual Rytm with a more raw and
aggressive sound than before across six powerful new tracks on his latest EP,
'Permanent'. Berlin-based Ukrainian DJ/producer Chontane has had a busy
twelve months. Capped off by recently launching his own new TANE label, the
exciting talent has been working hard to reinvent and refresh his sound in
the studio. Mastering new techniques to push things to the next level, this
EP and return to SHDW & Obscure Shape's Mutual Rytm proves he has
succeeded and then some. Where previous works on the likes of ARTS and Rekids
were full and more melodic, here he has restricted himself and gone for a
more visceral sound. Developed and built in all new ways with an innovative
approach to sound design and arrangement, the tracks on the package showcase
a more serious and harder-hitting side to his sound as he unveils his
impactful 'Permanent' EP. Opener 'Graze' has a monstrous feel to it, with
ghoulish synth loops and industrial textures all coming on strong and heavy.
As it bangs along, incendiary hi-hats and lithe pads all bring extra weight
and detail. 'Cumaru' is a highpaced techno workout with a frenzy of synths
and percussion, all making for dense layers of heavily textured sound.
'Schima' brings some big techno bounce in the drums and more hurried, rusty
synth loops that lock you into the darkness. Showing yet another side,
'Lauan' is a little more paired back with pounding tribal grooves and bright
synths, bringing relentless yet funk-fuelled intensity. 'Vevis' is the most
melodic of the lot - a heavy track but with subtle optimism in the rising
background synths that will surely get hands in the air. Last of all is
digital bonus 'Makore', a cauldron of intensity with scraping hits and
relentless drums, vastly oversized hi-hats and slamming bass. This
high-impact, beautifully brutal yet groove-heavy techno takes Chontane's
sound into new realms, and delivers an impressive return on a label
continuing to push the genre forward |

NIGHT COMMUNICATION was a
production team composed by Andrea Gemolotto and Leo Marras. They both were
very active in the early italo house scene, Gemolotto was famous for his

If
there was ever a dance oddity it™s the bizarrely named single
˜Prisencólinensináinciúsol™, released in late 1972 by Italian entertainment
icon Adriano Celentano, first appearing as a 45 on his own Clan label. A cult
favourite if there ever was one, GW Edits kicks off their label with a
sumptuous edit sewing the A and B side of the record into an 11-minute
masterpiece named ˜Adriano Italiano™. Renamed ˜The Language Of Love
(Prisencol„)™ for the UK market, the original failed to make any impression
on the UK chart instead becoming a cult DJ treasure. The fact that it was
regularly reissued over the next few years illustrates its enduring appeal.
The novelty of its title and zany nonsensical lyrics may have caught the
attention, but what sealed the deal was that groove! On top of that,
Celentano™s vocal (as well as that of his wife Claudia Mori, who injected the
short female section) that mimics the way English sounded to non-English
speakers, comes across nowadays as proto-rap, receiving kudos as such in more
recent times. The track is most certainly an anomaly, having no bearing
whatsoever on hip-hop culture, yet somehow unconsciously envisaging it. The
flip side of the record was appropriately called ˜Disc Jockey™, also featured
that infectious rolling groove complete with offbeat hat. It wasn™t as DJ
friendly though, the drums not dropping for the first minute, whilst it also
featured a more traditional sounding song in Celentano™s native tongue
instead of the rhythmic rap gobbledygook of ˜Prisencólinensináinciúsol™. Here
the two are sewn together for a full-length ˜Adriano Italiano™, running at
just over 11 minutes, with the addition of a further two-minute instrumental
version. The full-length appears on vinyl for the first time and, along with
the original ˜Adriano Italiano™, launches the GW Edits series, bringing this
eccentric favourite to a new generation of DJs in time for its 50th
anniversary next year |

Boudica
is proud to present their first record of 2024, featuring an artist who holds
a special place within the platform - none other than DJ and producer Wallis.
DJ, live-act and former mastering engineer, Wallis speaks for a generation
searching for novelty and emotion in the electronic music realm. Sharp
engineering skills coupled with a unique approach to sound design allowed her
to develop a trademark sound. Using an array of synthesisers, effects units,
and experimental studio techniques, Wallis produces melancholic electronic
music rapidly shifting between different patterns and atmospheres. She tours
as a DJ and Live Act around the world, having played large festivals such as
DGTL or renowned clubs like Berghain, and will happily play at a large stage
one day but at a small intimate sweaty basement the next. In 2024, she
started producing music for fashion shows and debuted that project by
creating the music for the entire Natasha Zinko runway show at London Fashion
Week February 2024. The EP's opening track, "Hell is a Girl from Before
(Rainy Summer Mix)," introduces a stirring blend of emotions. Starting
with an emotional melody, accompanied by synths and a plucked instrument, it
swiftly transitions into energetic segments driven by the drums. Vocals
emerge, their words almost imperceptible, adding an intimate layer to the
experience. The track maintains a steady pace, evoking the ambience of a
rainy summer day. This creates a melancholic yet hopeful mood, transporting
listeners through a journey of introspection. As "Protect Me From My
Friends" unfolds, it feels like being whisked away to a new dimension,
greeted by otherworldly, robotic sounds. The introspective journey of the
previous track mutates into raw emotions, driven forward by a relentless
bassline. Clear vocals take the forefront, guiding the listener through the
sonic landscape, only to be interrupted by the commanding presence of the
bassline, which assumes the main character role. In "Sleeping Pills Are
Gone," an atmospheric and gloomy introduction is abruptly interrupted by
an acid and hefty bassline that dynamically evolves throughout the track,
plunging the listener into an eyes-open dream born of a sleepless night. The
vocals echo the track's title, creating a haunting repetition. Wallis
strategically grants brief breaks, constructing a powerful crescendo that
heightens the experience. These are momentary escapes before immersing the
listener once more into the hypnotic trance induced by the solid
four-to-the-floor march. Closing the EP with a striking finale, "Teenage
Apocalypse" introduces a clunky melody that encapsulates the signature
sound of the record. Characteristic vocals weave throughout, guiding the
listener towards the track's crescendo. Driven by a flawless fusion of drums,
the song transitions seamlessly into a powerful breakbeat moment, accompanied
by yet another impeccable bassline. True to its title, it evokes the
intensity of a day of judgment, leaving a lasting impact as the EP draws to a
close |

Continuing its streak of lit
releases, Modeight Records now shines a light on an exciting new Romanian
talent Raz, based in Manchester. Injecting some sick minimal house grooves,
infectious energy into 4 original compositions. The young artist captivates
the listener with his raw and rollicking flow. From the mega fun, head
bobbing bassline jam and smooth vocals on "Time Chamber", to the
slick electronic riffs of "Fun Ensemble". The deep, sub sonic
wiggle of "A Sharp Delay", Raz carves out a sophisticated and hella
enjoyable sonic journey diving into "Orange Glide". A breakout
release for an artist who's definitely gonna be one to watch in the future |

Tubby
did three original dub albums, ‘Dub From The Roots’. ‘The Roots of Dub’ and
the third is ‘Brass Rockers’ with Tommy McCook ‘pon the flying cymbals. Where
he mixed it with the horn going in and out in a dub way and one named ‘Shalom
Dub’ you can call Tubby’s too because he mixed the versions as they were off
forty fives. King Tubby and Producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee are intertwined in
the birth of Dub Music. After
discovering a mistake that made a ‘serious joke’ ( more of which later...)
they went on to release the first pressings of this new musical genre namely
‘Dub Music’. Tubby’s vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny’s vast catalogue
of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard...
the Remix / Version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Osbourne ‘King Tubby’
Ruddock was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 28th January 1941 and grew up in the
High Holborn Street area of downtown Kingston. He studied electronics at
Kingston’s National Technical College and also on two correspondence courses
from the U.S.A... When he had qualified Tubby began repairing radios and
other electrical appliances in a shack in the back yard of his mother’s home.
His work in the early days included winding transformers and building
amplifiers for Kingston’s Sound Systems.
Tubby built his first Sound System in 1957 playing jazz and Rhythm
& Blues at local weddings and birthday parties. His reputation as a man
who knew and understood both electronics and music grew steadily and as the
sixties drew to a close. Tubby
purchased his own basic two track equipment. He installed this alongside his
dub cutting machine, a home made mixing console and his impressive collection
of Jazz albums in the back bedroom of his home at 18 Dromilly Avenue which he
christened his music room. Tubby and Striker were at Treasure Isle Studio’s
one day while Ruddy from Spanish Town was working with the engineer Byron
Smith. “Tubby and myself was talking when Ruddy was cutting some dub but
Smithy (engineer) made a mistake through we were talking and forgot to put in
the voice. It was two track recording in those days. Ruddy said ‘No Man! Make
it stay! and so they cut the rhythm.
When I went over to Ruddy’s
that Saturday night a dance was in progress and when they played the vocal to
the tune... then he said we’re going to play ‘Part Two’. They never called it
‘Version’..and then he played the rhythm track. The song was a catchy song
and everybody started to sing along and the deejay started to toast so
everything went down well. On Monday morning I went up and I said ‘Tubbs the
mistake we made was a serious joke.It mash up Spanish Town! The people went
wild. So you have to start to do that now ‘cause when the man put on the
‘Part Two’ everyone start singing this song. It played about twenty times. I
said you try Tubbs!’...Well the next Saturday night now when Tubby strung up
down the farm U Roy said he’s going to play ‘Part Two’ but Tubby did it
different now. He started with the voice then dropped it out and let the
rhythm run and then he brought in the voice in the middle and from there
Tubby started to get really popular.’’Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee. Dynamic Sounds
upgraded to sixteen track recording in 1972 and Tubby purchased, again with
the help of a deal brokered by Bunny Lee. The old four track equipment and
the MCI console from their Studio B.
The four tracks now gave him far wider scope to work with and he began
to create a new musical form where the bass and drum parts were brought up
while the faders allowed Tubby to ease the vocal and rhythm in and out of the
mix. It was only a matter of time before Tubby’s dub plate experiments began
to make it on to vinyl and the first ever long playing King Tubby releases
would feature a collection of his mixes to a selection of Strikers rhythms.
So please sit back and enjoy this historic set of sounds. Lovingly restored
and with a few extra gems added to the CD Editions. These releases were the
first to carry the name of King Tubby and the first to credit the great
musicians that contributed so much to the rhythms that made these albums
possible |

Rock
steady only lasted for a brief period, from 1966 to 1968, but its
significance to the subsequent development of Jamaican music is incalculable
and it would go on to shape each successive musical movement over the next
four decades. Deejays, dub, digital and dance hall all stepped to the tune
and pace of rhythms whose origins were grounded in the rock steady beat and
it is impossible to ever overstate its importance... or its beauty. “…the
greatest man that came to Jamaica and changed the whole beat from ska to rock
steady was Lyn Taitt. He was from Trinidad but Byron Lee did bring him come
to Jamaica as an organist but he started playing guitar and the rest is
history! We should call him rock steady… it’s Lyn Taitt as he was the man! He
played lead guitar and ska at the same time…” Bunny Lee. As the frantic, frenetic pace
of ska finally let up in 1966 the cool, cool sound of rock steady came to the
fore. This languid, soulful music was the complete musical antithesis of its
more famous antecedent and the gentle guitar of Lyn Taitt would forever
define the sound of rock steady. Trinidadian Nerlyn ‘Lyn’ Taitt had been
given a contract by Byron Lee to travel to Jamaica to play at the
Independence celebrations in 1962 but fell in love with Jamaica and decided
to stay joining The Sheiks and then The Cavaliers before forming Lyn Taitt
& The Comets. Lyn also recorded as a guest guitarist with The Skatalites
before Lyn Taitt & The Jets came together in 1966. The rock steady beat
was slower, more measured and the emphasis was placed on the bass. It no
longer gave equal emphasis to every beat but, instead, played a repeated
pattern that syncopated the rhythm. The rhythmic focus shifted to the core of
the music to the bass and the drums where it has remained ever since. “For
that tempo the tempo is very slow with the bass and guitar line playing the
same thing. You used to use two guitars. Hux Brown and myself or another
guitarist and myself. And it was very slow but with a definite bass line
going straight through the song…” Lyn
Taitt. Lyn Taitt & The Jets were soon in such great demand that they
would often play up to five sessions a day for as many different producers
but they were not the only rock steady band. When the Skatalites had broken
up in 1965 Jackie Mittoo formed Studio One’s house band The Soul Brothers
(who soon became The Soul Vendors) and Tommy McCook decided to work with Duke
Reid at Treasure Isle studio with The Supersonics. Bobby Aitken’s Carib Beats
eschewed subtlety for drive but together these musicians were responsible for
establishing the rules of rock steady music. Their gentle approach allowed
vocalists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe and Desmond Dekker and harmony
groups including The Techniques, The Melodians, The Uniques and The Paragons
and many, many more to demonstrate their prowess |

Both
songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley.
The vinyl is housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of the duo and
that Art Fine logo in puzzle pieces. Each copy includes a double sided
postcard insert with lyrics and liner notes by Fabrice Bellini. Art Fine was
the duo of Fabrice Bellini (electronics, vocals) and Rush Blakemann (guitar,
synthesizer) from Tuin, Italy. They met in art school and became friends,
inspired by New Wave, dance and electronic music. They recorded their only
single šDark Silence› in November of 1984, which was released by Discomagic
in 1985. Fabrice programmed the electronic drums using SCI Drumtraks and
added extra tracks on the Simmons SDSV. Rush played electric guitar and the
Yamaha piano notes at the start of the song. Guest musicians Silvano Borgatta
and Riccardo RosaThe šda da da da da› voice effect was done by engineer Gigi
Guerrieri, who cut and spliced a tape rather than using a sampler, which was
too expensive at the time. šDark Silence› tells the love story of beautiful
girl who Fabrice saw many times but could not reach. He called her Dark
Silence, for her dark hair and eyes and the silence unwanted between them.
The B-side features a remixed version with extended breaks and dubbed out
bass lines and vocals. Both songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at
Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket
featuring a photo of the duo and that Art Fine logo in puzzle pieces |

Taking
off from Beaugars Seck™s foundational sabar drum rhythms ž recorded by Sam in
Dakar in February 2020 ž Shackleton has constructed a trio of intricately
layered, luminous, enchanted, epic excursions. The second is more dazzled and
meandering, with jellied bass, insectile detail, and discombobulated
jabbering; the third is more liquid, fleet of foot, and psychedelic, with a
grooving b-line and funky keyboard stabs, scrambled eastern strings and
hypnotic vocalese. The harmonium in The Overwhelming Yes sounds like Nico
blowing in chillily from up the desert shore. The overall mood is wondrous,
twinkling with light, onwards-and-upwards; an uncanny, dubwise mix of the
ancient and the futuristic. Mark Ernestus™ Version is stripped, trepidatious,
mystical, and stranger still, with just a snatch of the original melody,
extra distortion and delay, and crystal-clear drum sound. Twenty minutes of
startlingly original music, with Shackleton the maestro at the top of his
game, and a characteristically evilous dub by Mark Ernestus. Mastered by
Rashad Becker; handsomely sleeved. Sick to the nth. Love 4 Ever. |

London-based artist Wordcolour
returned to Houndstooth late 2021 with a playful new single ˜Bluster™ and now
to follow up we are pleased to release three new editions of the track from
New Yorker DJ Python, UK based DJ and producer wizard, Djrum and one half of
Matmos, The Soft Pink Truth. The result, Bluster, continues some of the club
experiments of his first EP Tell Me Something, but with a beefed-up heavier
sound aimed at slow, chunky techno sets. Like that first record, this track
has a sense of humour - constantly cutting in playful bits of vocal and drum
detail. Both the title and the artwork imply an undue swagger - a sense of
winging it through changeable unpredictable weather conditions: a combination
that, for me, sums up the feel of this track as well as the circumstances in
which it was made." Named as ˜One To Watch™ by The Guardian, Wordcolour
has received support from Crack Magazine, The Guardian, DJ Mag, KEXP,
Worldwide FM, FACT Magazine, and more |
