The Surprise Package was
comprised of members from The Viceroys and The Galaxies. These two bands were
regulars at regional teen fairs and often played alongside The Sonics and The
Wailers. The Surprise Package recorded the album "Free Up" with Lee
Hazlewood, featuring heavy fuzz guitar, rock organ, keyboard bass (like The
Doors) and a fifteen-minute title track. Despite touring with the Beach Boys
or Led Zeppelin, success did not knock their door. This release is the second
installment of our new Lee Hazlewood Industries (LHI) Records Reissues
Series. First ever vinyl reissue. Newly remastered from the original analog
tapes by GRAMMY(R)-nominated engineer John Baldwin. Includes new interview

Formed in Birmingham in 1976, English punk quartet Suburban Studs built their
reputation through fearsome early live gigs, supporting the Pistols and the
Clash at the 100 Club, and having the Clash return the favour at a gig the
Studs headlined in their home town: they later supported AC/DC and Judas
Priest, among many others. Signing to the independent Pogo label in l977,
debut album Slam had 16 brisk originals and a double-time take of the Who's y
Generation': this edition comes with four bonus tracks taken from their
unfinished in-progress second album, which was never released. A must-have

Starting out as the Masterettes,
a girl group formed by high school friends Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson,
Lillian Walker and Sylvia Wilbur, the group switched focus and changed name
after Wilbur was replaced by Brenda Reid's husband, Herb Rooney, their breakthrough
hit 'Tell Him' appearing in 1963 after Leiber & Stoller took charge.
1971's Black Beauty, produced by Rooney, continued the post-L&S journey
via the group's own take of funky and melodic soul, approaching the style of
the Staples Singers with plenty of emotive harmonies. If you like your soul

Peruvian trumpet player Tito
Chicoma dedicated his 1968 LP on MAG to recording two fashionable rhythms at
the time: "Cumbias Y Boogaloos". Although Colombian cumbia had
gained popularity much earlier, Boogaloo in Peru was championed primarily by
the MAG record label, which kept its listeners abreast of tropical music
developments in New York, releasing and distributing records by Alegre

We're
drifting a little deeper and less dubby with our second release. Glos is
hailing from cologne but his origins are deeply rooted to Berlin where he
grew up. His sound tends to be
extremely deep and atmospheric but still straight and danceable as he
often proves his versatility. Knees To the earth comes with a solid drumming
and a wobbling sub-architecture which is underlines by the repeating
synth-stab. There is No One Like You comes in with a heavy hitting kickdrum,
pitched-up vocals and a great structure of pads which gives this track a very
special sound coming straight from the basement. The remixes for this one are
coming from Paris' veteran Francois X, he chose a very tooly sound, an
extremely power- and useful remixes for nearly every floor, straight into the
legs! ANTHONY has done a great treatment to the track by modulating it into a
tooly acid-tech track that lives and breaths, he turned special attention to
the build-up of the track by increasing the acid-lines volume, an
architectural masterpiece! |

excellent deep tracks pressed on a slice of 12' black gold which features
tracks by Fil Lavin & DJP, Petkovski & Akioki and reworks by the
mighty Deep Space Orchestra and Liverpool based Andy Ash. On the A side we
find an infectious disco tainted classic deephouse groove called ''Hear Me''
by the likes of Fil Lavin & DJP. Excellent uplifting grooves which are
smartly complimented by some subtle sample work. For the A2' Andy Ash is on
remix duties. The rework contains a more nervous and elecronic vibe with
flipped drums to a more contemporary electroish 80s vibe but still maintains
the signature chord sounds of the original effort. Label founder Petkovski
opens the B side together with longtime label collaborator Akioki on their
spiritual dancefloor smasher ''Think''. Again some catchy deep chords are
subtly placed over balanced drums to uphold the moving vocal sample that lies
on top. The B2 brings us a Deep Space Orchestra rework of Petkovski and
Akioki's ''think''. Like you'd expect from the british duo, a more
atmospheric yet staggering vibe has been created, focussing on the electronic
bits of the original work a top notch DSO remix has been delivered which is
perfect to close down an excellent and very balanced debut 12'' |

proved to be an excellent start to life as a label for Music Is Love. As well
as truly finding their feet and establishing a breed of music representative
of what the label symbolise, they simultaneously introduced us to plenty of
fresh new talent and particularly pleasing was the unearthing of numerous
promising UK artists. Bringing us nicely into the New Year with the label's
7th release is London-based artist Mikki Funk, who's next in-line from the
MIL roster to unleash his first full EP after appearing on the MIL VA back in
February. Throughout Funk's work, so far, you will find a supreme blend of
US/UK garage and soulful house, and those ingredients is what makes this
latest EP so essential. First up is the rhythmically unfolding house sounds
of Out of My Head, with its bouncy bassline, classic 90's house piano chords
and sensual female vocal building over swirling synths to give a real
Balearic opening vibe to the EP. It's one for the dance floor and kicks off
proceedings engagingly before Need No More maintains the pace, albeit with a
deeper complexity. Spritely percussion combos drive this at a steady pace
under a characteristic Funk bassline whilst deep, warped chords add greater
dynamic and supersede the elements of the track. L.A's Esteban Adame - an
artist with a quite prolific musical background - brings his deep, creative
flair for a remix of Our Love. Chunky hand-claps and thumping kicks take
precedence while scurrying hi hats race over a heavy bassline and chopped
vocals as some nicely shaped synths swirl and resonate throughout. There's a
fresh sense of variation with Funk's work - subtle melodies are laced with
overriding house/garage sounds giving a revived take on the genres that have
helped mould his style. Closing out an assured EP is Our Love, couched in the
influences of classic house and built on archetypal 90's elements. Classic
piano key chords and intermittent string stabs combine with an engaging
female vocal as a groove-heavy bassline oscillates beneath the surface to
round off the EP nicely and amplify what Mikki Funk is all about |

With
his new album Who's Breathing?, Ryan showcases some of his new songs which,
not unlike the drink that's named after him, are both eclectic and sweetly
intoxicating. The first half is a top-heavy, bleary-eyed amble through the
metaphysical country moves made familiar through his work in The Silt.
Central to these songs is Ryan's heady, almost surrealist lyrics, which
traipse commonplace folk themes on the slant and uneven ground of a funhouse.
The second half assumes the mentalist lounge approach, that particular sound
not unfamiliar to those who attend the monthly Ryan Driver Quartet
appearances at the Tranzac bar in Toronto. Mr. Driver's own brand of smoky,
downcast jazz meanders in a slack void between half-speed piano bar exercises
and subterranean psychedelia cast in twilight. On piano, Ryan is accompanied
primarily by bass, drums, and Martin Arnold's peculiar, intuitive guitar
playing. But, as with the first half, it is Ryan's song writing that takes
centre stage; teeming with double-meanings and verbal loopholes, excavating
the alien and quietly phosphorescent landscape of the soul |

generic sleeve repress - Mutual Rytm is back with more searing techno, this
time in the form of a welcome return to wax from venerated Aussie mainstay
Shane Yates, aka Alpharisc. Melbourne's Alpharisc has been making music since
1993, initially with humble tools like the Commodore 64 and Amiga 500, before
putting together and building a growing collection of hardware. He has always
maintained a somewhat reclusive character since breaking through with the
city's renowned Wetmusik party and label collective following the release of
his first EP in 1999 and has always kept a nostalgic touch in his music
alongside his signature Alpharisc sound. Following a string of digital EPs on
the likes of Future Retro Music, this is his first vinyl 12" in two
decades as he returns to Mutual Rytm following his appearance on the
Federation Of Rytm II compilation, serving up his bustling 'Ram Face' EP. The
powerful 'Formation Filter' opens up with a powerful techno groove built from
rock-solid kicks and rumbling bass that will rattle walls. Snares and synth
rolls peel off the drums as they race onwards and grow ever wilder and more
intense for maximum destruction. 'Circus Fear' is another stylish linear
workout with lithe synth details and loopy drums peppered with coarse claps
and hits to up the ante, while 'Hot Morning' brings even more fire with its
big, churning percussive clatter and supersized hi-hats racing along over
more bulky beats. Things get more unhinged with the hard-edged 'Ram Face',
which has pummelling drums and scraping hits forming a barrage of
industrialised sound; a lead from a SID chip will bring a smile to those who
are familiar with its sound playing a hypnotic lead over the top. The final
track on wax, 'The Old One', builds up cosmic tension, haunting synth lines
and howling solar winds into another peak time techno weapon. As always with
the label, a digital bonus cut 'Hairyman' provides a special treat and
delivers another frosty techno roller with pent-up energy and compelling drum
programming |

with 'Symbiosis' - an excellent split EP from Greek artists ANNE & Sera
J, featuring six fresh cuts and four digital bonuses. The release title comes
from the Greek word 'Symbiosis', which means living closely together for a
significant period and can be used to speak of a mutually beneficial
interaction between individuals. And that is precisely what can be said of
ANNE and Sera J, who have grown through life as partners and, more recently,
as musical peers. This split EP is their first release alongside one another,
and one that presents the story of their innermost feelings, with their full
label debut following fine contributions to the label's 'Federation Of Rytm
II' compilation back in March. ANNE has had a busy few years making her mark
with potent techno on labels such as Soma, Hardgroove, and Life In Patterns,
while Sera J is just as revered for his tunes on the likes of Out Of Place,
DifferentSound and more. ANNE takes the A-side, firstly with the fiery diva
vocals and thumping techno drums of 'Heal My Soul' and then the more physical
and banging drum programming of 'Turn Back Time'. It's a big, metallic cut
with rumbling bass and sleek synths peeling off the groove, while her final
track 'Zephyrus' has plenty of infectious bounce and eerie pads to keep
dancers on their toes. On the flip, Sera J kicks off with the electrifying
synth stabs and cantering techno power of 'Blue Dancers' and then offers up
'Common People' as twisted leads and slamming drums all run through with
alien sound effects and bright stabs. To close, 'Delusion' is a psychedelic
cut with roaming leads that bring plenty of cosmic energy to the unrelenting
kicks. In addition, each artist serves up a pair of digital bonuses: ANNE
with the hurried funk of 'Serene' and loopy intensity of 'Victor', and Sera J
with the liquid, dubby dynamics of the hard-hitting 'Intensity' and monstrous
energy of 'Bodies Don't Lie.' |

the opening strains of the politico title-track to the countrified pedal
steel guitar on 'Man With A Missio'n, from the anti-establishment anthem
'American Jesus', to the heart rending ballad 'Struck A Nerve', Bad
Religion's Recipe For Hate is by far their most eclectic album, and one that
never ceases to stir up controversy among fans. Graffin, a seething
combination of perfect pitch and skeptical emotion, reaffirms his place as
one of the best punk rock vocalists on this record. Guest appearances abound,
from Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam fame) harmonizing on 'American Jesus' and
'Watch it Die','to Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano's stunning vocals on
'Struck A Nerve', to Claw Hammer's John Wahl and Chris Bagarozzi's searing
guitar leads on 'Kerosene'. As the songwriting team of Graffin&Gurewitz
pull back from their more introspective writing that appeared on some of the
previous albums, they focus ever more keenly on the events of the day. Recipe
For Hate is a scathing commentary on the state of the nation, a social
criticism addressing alcoholism, abortion and homelessness |

Our
first release is by Jay Clarke, a London based producer and resident of the
renowned monthly party. The first release will showcase killer cuts from Jay
himself, each showcasing a brand of Techno narrative that's become now
synonymous with his contradistinctive sound. Jay's production methods are by
no means homogeneous to one strain of dancefloor Techno, his DJ sets
regularly encompass tracks, tools or elements from the broader spectrum of
electronic music, and you're sure to find an array of influences in abundance
throughout his own productions. So it's not just First Flight by name, it's
also First Flight by nature here for Jay. First Flight features three
original tracks from Jay himself and UK producer JoeFarr has been drafted in
to take care of remix duties here, and brings his trademark rough- edged
Techno sound along for the ride. This really isn't one for the faint-hearted;
a great addition to what is a supremely versatile and well-rounded release.

Gear appreciating Italian
'Giorgio Luceri' enters the SAFT dome with the machine driven 'Liger EP'. On
the opening track 'Liger' Giorgio cleverly paints an elusive ambiance using
jumbled drums and an appealing bassline together with a continual synthline
that nicely sits on top of the serene pads that give rise to an intense
atmosphere. The B1 side opens with similar soothing pads that gradually
change when the immense bassline and full bodied kick drum come in. Giorgio
again creates a somewhat adverse vibe which helps to give it a hint of
lushness. For the B2, Chicago legend 'Gene Hunt' contributes with a massive
percy remix for 'Liger'. A lot of drum action is present in this club
oriented (yet deep) roller. As far as remixes go, Gene Hunt proves to be a
craftsman of high stature |
