Ireland's
Cruachan have enjoyed a storied career since they took those tentative first
steps back in 1992. As frontman and sole original member Keith Fay
elaborates; ˜When I started writing music as a 13-year-old, I had no idea
that I was laying the foundations for what would become a brand-new genre,
Folk Metal, or that I was planting the seeds of what would be one of the
longest running Irish metal bands in history. There have been many ups and
downs over the last thirty years, band members have come and gone, record
deals have come and gone. We've played some of the biggest metal festivals on
the planet, travelled to more countries than most Irish bands would ever
dream possible. And it has all led to this - our ninth album, 'The Living and
the Dead'. Quote from Keith Fay: ˜This album had to be good. No, it had to be
better than good. This had to be the best Cruachan album ever made. I faced a
decision in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, when three band members left

Reality, acheery, optimistic track which opens with lush keys, and filtered
breaks. Soon we are treated to long synths brimming with optimism while
melodies are formed from a slew of elements entangled in joyous harmony. This
is a special track before we even mention the amazingly crisp apache breaks
which are introduced and toyed with to the conclusion in JLM's inimitable

Whooshing, reverberating synths punctuate a dense soundscape laced with

Sly
Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare or Sly and Robbie as they are affectionately
known are the drum and bass backbone of Reggae Music, they have played on,
produced, invented, reinvented more records then many of their contemporaries
put together. Sly Dunbar born Lowell
Charles Dunbar on 10 May 1952, Kingston, Jamaica, drummed his first session
for Mr Lee Perry which included a Jamaican hit ,a track called 'Night
Doctor', before moving on to the group Skin, Flesh & Bones who had a
residency at Kingston's famous 'Tit for Tat' club. This band would evolve
into the Channel One house band The Revolutionaries where Sly named after his
fondness of the band Sly and the Family Stone would begin to play alongside a
bass player who would become his long standing partner in music, namely one
Robbie Shakespeare. Robbie Shakespeare born 27 September 1953, Kingston,
Jamaica, had worked his way through session bands including the legendary
Aggrovators before uniting with Sly Dunbar in The Revolutionaries. Both
musicians had worked with other respective bass / drum players including such
figures as Lloyd Parks [bass], Carlton 'Santa' Davis [drums], but everything
seemed to fall into place when they worked together. They also both had a
quest to push the boundaries of reggae music, which they would do throughout
their careers, over many sessions to numerous to mention. But highlights
would include the groundbreaking Mighty Diamonds 1976 set 'Right Time' with
its fresh rockers rhythms which lead the way in the 1970's. Also their work
with the bands Culture and Black Uhuru the later of which they toured
extensively with, spreading the reggae vibes across Europe and America. Not
to forget to mention their Taxi label / productions which are always
inventitive whether its in the reggae field or outside where their playing /
production skills are much in demand. The third piece of this jigsaw is the
mighty Mr Bunny 'Striker' Lee who brought these legends together. Born Edward
O'Sullivan Lee 23 August 1941, he must be one of reggae's most underrated
producers. Leading the way in the 1970's especially in the dub field and
being one of the early exponents of a King Tubby remix ,which would see
nearly all his 7'' releases carrying a Tubby reworking on its flip side.
Bunny started his musical career in 1962 working for Duke Reid's Treasure
Isle label and soon moved into the world of production gaining his first hit
in 1967 with 'Musical Field' by Roy Shirley for the WIRL label. The 1970's
was a very productive time for Bunny Lee and saw the launch of his LEE'S
label which was producing hits in Jamaica. Not having a studio of his own and
renting studio time from the existing establishments like Randy's Studio 17
and Channel One he had to have a crack team of session players to carry out
this task, fast and efficiently. This happened firstly under the guise of THE
AGGROVATORS and then with the group of musicians THE REVOLUTIONARIES. It’s
here in the latter of these groups that Bunny matched Sly and Robbie together
for the first time and it’s this match made in heaven that these tracks on
this release are culled from. Sessions that Bunny Lee produced with Sly and
Robbie during this magical 70's period. These rare dubs are taken from the
original master tapes, you may have heard the tune before but not these

we approach the threshold leading us back to the Black Lodge on our
transformative 8th journey, we are escorted through and beyond the mystical
portal by the vigorous and fierce forces of Sneaker. Portrait in House is a
collection of 3 resonant works, which are unified into a singular vision
within its uncanny language that is rooted deeply in the foundations of Jak,
New Beat, EBM, and Wave. Existing inside the liminal spaces of where light
meets dark, we are presented with a documentation of dissonance and harmony.
We begin our voyage with Jihad, a sluggish and slogging piece that
unforgivingly drags us through the grime and the dirt in a ritualistic
fashion that would have the ghost of Georges Bataille dancing in circles.
Voices call out and howl into the dark as the drum patterns of the 707
rhythmically grasps onto its anarchic components. In the dark, we can see the
light beyond the known universe. In the words of Sneaker "The name is
not our message, but a document of an evident, traditional concept in (y)our
world." As we find ourselves sprawled out on the ground following the
1st sonic stanza, a menacing voice bellows and warns that this is a Sax
Track. Referencing Chicago icon Lil Louis, this work juxtaposes classical
elements of house music together with the bare knuckled spirit of Jak. A
magical spell led by disharmonious Portasound FM keys in conversation with a
teetering sub bass, where at its core, this plus this, equals something that
is uniquely familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. A number fit for any
uncanny ritual that will fall under the night sky. Bringing our cosmic
procession to a close we pick up the pace with a commanding number titled,
Dance On, a no holds barred work that will possess your soul in the name of
Jak. Flangers wail unforgivingly alongside a pulsating 101, as samples of the
human voice are chopped up and arranged into a conversation that hypnotically
calls for our bodies to be transformed into soft machines, while powered by
ceremonious motions that are generated from the liberating process of ritual

Cybernetic
disco maestro Patrick Cowley returns to Dark Entries with From Behind, a
collection of grooving and ecstatic covers of 60s garage and soul cuts. Best
known for his chart-topping disco anthems, Cowley left us with an incredible
body of work before his tragic death in 1982 due to AIDS-related illness.
Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley’s friends and family to
uncover the singular artist’s lesser-known sides, including his soundtracks
for films on compilation albums School Daze, Muscle Up, and Afternooners.
From Behind reveals yet another facet of Cowley’s myriad influences; garage
and soul. As a tripped-out teenage music freak who arrived in 60’s San
Francisco, it should come as no surprise that these psychedelic sounds, both
heady and visceral, infuse Cowley’s oeuvre. Recorded during Cowley’s most
productive period, ‘80-’82, these tracks show the master flexing his
virtuosity while paying loving tribute to the songs that shaped him. A rough
draft of Loverde’s “Iko Iko” contorts the jaunty Dixie Cups classic into a
slithering, monstrous bathhouse groover, the song’s signature claps draped in
cavernous reverb. An unexpected hi-NRG cover of The Doors’ “20th Century Fox”
has Paul Parker on vocals, ironically twisting the original’s overt
heterosexuality. Via Cowley’s vocoder, The Who’s “Shakin’ All Over” is
transformed into a haunting meditation on the loss of bodily autonomy that
AIDS inflicts, while the Moody Blues’ “Ride My See Saw” appears in
instrumental, amped up and synthesized for dancefloor impact. We’re also
graced with instrumental demo versions of The Seeds’ “Pushin’ Too Hard” and
The Electric Prunes’ “Too Much To Dream (Last Night),” which later appeared
on Paul Parker releases. Things close out with a swinging version of the Four
Tops’ Motown classic “Baby I Need Your Loving”, Cowley later reimagined for
R&B artist Carl Carlton. The record comes housed in a sleeve designed by
Gwenaël Rattke and includes an insert with photos and liner notes written by
Louis Niebur. Arriving on October 19th in celebration of what would have been
Cowley’s 74th birthday, From Behind gives us yet another glimpse into
Cowley’s world: iconic, erotic, and more than a little cheeky |

Jef Mercelis, Teuk Henri, Frank Pay en Jan Ducheyne spelen nu al meerdan zes
jaar samen. En dat is er aan te horen als ze op een podium staan. De gitaren
van Teuk Henri klinken helemaal in evenwicht met de zoemende Korg van Jef
Mercelis, die er dan nog eens zijn gouden stem bovenop gooit als het even
past. Frank Pay zorgt dat alles strak en los tegelijk zit met drums en
percussie en welgemikte achtergrondzang. Jan Ducheyne kan als geen ander zijn
teksten in de nu eens voortstormende, dan weer langzaam kabbelende muziek van
Noodzakelijk Kwaad leggen. Improvisatie is nooit ver weg eens dit viertal het
podium bestijgt. Wat niet wil zeggen dat ze geen songs schrijven. ‘De Wind’,
‘Morsen Met Mensen’, ‘Wilde Bloemen’, ‘Kabine’ het is maar een greep uit de
vijftien nummers die op de dubbelplaat staan. De plaat is opgenomen bij de
wizzard Pascal Deweze in Studio Jezus in Hoboken. Het hoesontwerp is van de

Growing
up on the north Atlantic island of Iceland bestows one with an unusual and
often intense relationship with light and colour: Summers come with endless
days, Winters with scant sunlight yet increased sightings of the Aurora
Borealis; the mysterious and awe-inspiring glow across the sky. Channelling
these energies, Exos comes to Tresor with his Green Light EP, a five-track
collection of the sort of spectrally rich techno synonymous with the
Northman’s 27-year career. Across the EP, the five tracks fizz and pulsate
driving ever forward, making the release’s title a three-way play on words
referencing the continuous travelling of photons, the verdant warping of the
Northern Lights, and the universal colour for Go, for forward propulsion.
Smart wordplay can also be found in titles like Grátt Silfur, a term in
Íslenska (literally “grey sliver”) which signifies a tension between two
parties, further extending the colour metaphor and dark/light dichotomy found
elsewhere. The digital release comes with three extra tracks that continue
the dynamic energy, pushed along by the same shifting, mutating force where
the music often feels like voices calling out from the darkness or the
shimmer of light as the sun rises across the horizon. Green Light EP continues
this year’s blazing return from an artist who, similar to his output, is
never stagnant: ever changing form yet ever moving forward |

Aesthetically,
Ed Schrader’s Music Beat hates to tread water. At the same time, the
Baltimore-based two-piece of vocalist Ed Schrader and bassist Devlin Rice
won’t force their songs to fit a preconceived style. “The next album’s always
gotta be different from the last one. We’re different people from record to
record. So, writing authentically to ourselves will always bring our work to
a place that we haven’t been to yet,” Rice said. Schrader added, “We’re
terrified of turning into AC/DC. We never want to be married to one scene or
time or sound. We want to be the Boba Fett of bands! Constantly altering the
way in which we make records has been pretty key in that process.” For Orchestra Hits, the band’s latest, that
alteration was welcoming longtime musical comrade Dylan Going into the fold
as a co-writer and co-producer. A songwriter in his own right, a guitar
sideman for ESMB on their last two tours, and a collaborator with Rice in the
noise riffage band Mandate, Going had both a unique vision and an intimate
familiarity with the ESMB vibe. “Dylan came to every show we’ve ever played
in New York—no matter how weird it was,” Schrader said. “He’d be standing
there ready to move an amp or feed us barbecued cactus after the gig and toss
on some Golden Girls so we could decompress. It felt like family as soon as
we began working, but I honestly had no idea how damn good he was at tossing
out these hooks.” According to Schrader, the songs “just poured out of us” over
the course of a highly caffeinated three-day weekend in a tiny room in
Devlin’s house while his cat, Sandy Goose, screamed continually. “It was like
three kids hiding from the world to get into some lovely mischief,” they
said. The lack of external pressure in the process gives Orchestra Hits an
almost paradoxical vibe. For all of the album’s layers, that mix live and
sequenced instruments, it never loses the raw energy of a small handful of
friends in the same room plugging in, cranking up, and playing until they
pass out. Lyrically, the album finds Schrader, now 45, meditating on
experiences in their youth to make sense of the present moment. “We are not
into the garden,” Schrader wails on the relentless “Roman Candle,” a song
about the sad debacle of Woodstock ’99, and a direct response to Joni
Mitchell’s “Woodstock,” a utopian ode to hippie idealism. A 19-year-old
Schrader, having snuck into Woodstock ’99 through a hole in the fence, was
there the night members of the crowd used candles intended for a vigil for
victims of the Columbine High School massacre to set fires all over the
grounds. Even before the fires, Schrader remembered feeling disconnected from
the music, the nostalgic cash grab, and the meatheads in the crowd. After
watching a press tower collapse, they boarded a random shuttle bus and were
dropped off near a Denny’s. “It was a far cry from the Garden of Eden,”
Schrader said. “That experience defined what I didn’t want to be a part of,
and yet America is more like Woodstock ’99 than ever.” |
