Following
5 years in Berlin, two albums and a continuing residency at Tresor all
bringing acclaim, Maedon is now an established voice and one also in
transition. The 8th release for her own Rant & Rave label announces this
in its title, 2.0, and its sound, a bold move away from her industrial roots
towards the groove-laden techno that earned her bones im Keller. The product
of careful study of techno's roots and evolution, this gradual process reaps
rewards here, showcasing a bracing new direction for an already-accomplished
artist. 'Working Out the Kinks' leads off, more a kinky workout than the
work-in-progress its title suggests. A vocal sample and rugged groove
initially brings an old school feel, something quickly offset by strikingly
modern production details. The EPs middle stride, 'Temporal' and 'Growing
Pains', attacks heads-down techno head on with style to spare. On the former,
growling lows and rotating pads are gradually joined by a symphony of sonic
detritus, with razor sharp drums slicing through the murk. A bouncing
bassline and blink-and-miss fills on the latter hammer the rhythm onwards,
surrounded by reduced industrial elements and grimy ambiance. 'Breakthrough'
does exactly that, it's uneasily modulating lead and bruising EBM bass
buffeted by waves of percussion then jackhammering to a climax confirming
Maedon's 2nd coming |

Djrum's
first release since 2019, the Meaning’s Edge EP is an introduction to a whole
new world. For the artist also known as Felix Manuel, it was created in the
final stretches of six rather traumatic years work. Having carefully honed
his techniques and aesthetics, and learned some hard-won emotional lessons
over this time, finally he began to work in a quicker, lighter fashion – and
to cleanse his palate a little by bringing in a fresh ingredient: his own
flute playing. For listeners, though, it will serve as an appetiser, a way
into the delights and complexities of this new phase of his creativity. It’s
a serious work in its own right, mind. The use of flutes – including Bansuri,
Shakuhatchi, Western Classical, and synthesised all blending and blurring
into one another – gives it a coherence and a sense of airiness that unites
the five tracks over half an hour, however divergent their beats get. And as
in all his music, Felix’s whole life is in here. Ethnomusicology studies,
untold hours of DJing everywhere from the gnarliest squat raves to the most
rarefied deep house clubs, explorations of his own neurological and emotional
makeup, and the technical finesse of someone who is never not creating music
or art, all roll into an experience that’s dazzling, delightful and keeps on
giving. Just the opening track ‘Codex’ alone touches on OG dubstep, Aphex
Twin-like braindance, post-classical exploration, movie themes and more. The
gentle tones and melodies that rise up out of it perfectly conjure Felix’s
running theme of a protective bubble that provides a sense of safety and
tranquillity even as the beats and acid gurgles and spurts all around it
conjure up the slings and arrows of life’s difficulties. The tone set, the EP
moves through ultra-rarefied glass-like percussion in an almost ambient
setting, hints of grime’s counterintuitive patterns, and even more hectic
patterns influenced by Tanzania’s hyperspeed singeli style of dance music –
but always with that perfect balance of chaos and control, unpredictability
and protection. It rewards playing and replaying endlessly, it’s a profound
and often joyous experience… and it’s only just the beginning. This is the
return of a master craftsperson more focused than ever on his vision and
vocation and ready to blow your mind all over again. Mastered and cut on 140g

The
time has finally come to have Kwartz in this house again and we couldnt be
more satisfied with the quality of the work he has delivered. It is clear
that his new residency at the best techno club on the planet, Berghain, has
helped his inspiration multiply exponentially and this is definitely
reflecting in this brand new work that leaves us wanting more. Four slices of
techno with all the letters, which define exactly what the genre should be
without seasonal additives, dynamic electronic dance music, without an
expiration date, which could be signed thirty years ago or in the distant
future. Mario does not entertain himself with extreme speeds, nor with
predictable developments, nor with pre-cooked sounds. His approach to musical
creation is slow and artisenal, meditating and maturing each of the
ingredients he uses without fear of being left out of the media radar. This
enitre procedure is reflected un the excellent result, The Golden Hour is a
perfect example of everything said above. Strong and firm rhythms, constantly
evolving arrangements, elaborate sound design and a firm dance attitude.
Enter The Zone turn rhythms towards broken bass drums, slightly presses the
accelerator and introduces disturbing atmospheres combined with organic
percussion details in a masterful way. A true catalyst for expert mixers. On
side B, Under Control once again breaks tradition with a broken, hypnotic and
continuous rhythms, a first-rate brain driller for the clubs peak moments.
The EP ends with Animal Instinct, which does not lower the intensity one bit,
adding an overwhelming rhythm with dynamic percussive details, with no room
for rest, perfect for the dancers to travel to unknown dimensions |

Alton
Ellis is one of the finest soulful voices to come out of Jamaica. As well as
writing hit singles himself he could make a cover version known as a foreign
tune sound like a Jamaican reggae tune with the greatest of ease. As the more
upbeat rhythms of the earlier `Ska’ period began to slow down around the turn
of 1966 some say due to the extreme heatwave that hit the island of Jamaica
that year, slower rhythms suited the people to groove to at the various sound
systems and dances. This also allowed the singers to express themselves more
and allow the song to shine through. No one did this better than Alton Ellis.
Alton Ellis (b.1944, Kingston Jamaica) started off singing at an early age as
part of a duo with singer Eddie Perkins and recorded for both Studio One and
Randy’s as ‘Alton and Eddy’ and had a massive hit with the song ‘Muriel’. The
singing pair went their separate ways Alton going solo with Studio One and
being a much in demand voice also recorded with Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle
studio as ‘Alton Ellis and The Flames’. As we stated earlier as the beat
slowed down the top singers shined through and Alton Ellis reigned supreme.
One of his tunes that we feature on this set ‘Get Ready (Do the Rocksteady)
even gave this period in reggae’s history its name ‘Rocksteady’. It’s this
fantastic period Rocksteady 1966-1968 that we feature on this release. This
set carries all the big hits ‘Ain’t That Loving You, ‘Girl I’ve Got A Date’,
‘Cry Tuff’ alongside many more classics. All cut at Treasure Isle songs that
really defined the era. So sit back and enjoy the Rocksteady sound at it’s
finest... |

Lee
Humphreys and Evasive head honcho Rob Pearson returned to the imprint for
their 2nd EP together as Lovable Rogues. This followed on from their first
collaboration which launched Evasive Records : Look Into Your Eyes / Chica /
Twilight Manouvres (EVA001) For this Ep Rob travelled out to work with Lee in
the depths of the German countryside at Lee’s Tofu Studios. EVA003 delivered
3 more tasty underground cuts for main floors and urban warehouse spaces and
pleased all the right DJ movers and shakers in the year 2000. It now finds
favour in 2024 with Tech House connoisseurs hungry for that early South
London Tech sound. Time Zones delivers some peak time twisted year 2k Tech.
Swirling ear candy synths and tripped out almost acidic twangs are the order of
the day. A head nodding bass combines with the filtered and sample triggered
vocal phrase ‘Eternal Energy Music’. As if the production pair were indeed
clairvoyants able to look ahead and prophesize the future state of
underground dance floors some 20 years later! This cut has since become a
classic requested early noughties gem for those in the know. On ‘Integer’ Lee
Humphreys rides solo to showcase his unique talent and slick production
sound. Driving filtered percussion elements and an infectious bass combine
with ‘Body Grooving’ vocal cuts and eerie reverse synths and sounds. Lee
basically hit this track out of the park here so Rob had no choice but to
request this cut and it was snapped up for the EP. ‘Thursday’ see’s Rob &
Lee back on the joint production for some Tech Funk shenanigans that are
‘sure to get you high’. Not sure what Mr Humphreys was on to allow Rob to
play the lead keyboard solo on this funk fuelled excursion but it stills
sounds fresh over 2 decades later.! A very different vibe that has not been
equalled or surpassed on Evasive since |

to master a variable set of rhythm skeletons and on A2 there are more
similarities to modern Hip-Hop and very slow Ghetto-Tech than the sound
pallette could invite us to hear. B1 continues a very diligent control over
BMP, rhythm flow and percussions work, here it's clearly D'n'B with a softer
pallett and more traditional tabla rhythm patterns with frequent visits from
classic D'n'B basslines. Lemma 2 rounds off with a very consitent and direct
driven cut that's nothing but a fast Stepper with more hints of that
unmistakenly funky and almost Ghetto-Tech snare |

Nathan Melja – who's made the rounds between choice outlets over the past

Technicolour and Opal Tapes, seems to have learnt Bruce Lee's lesson by
heart, and his seamlessly fluid, no-nonsense debut foray on K.O.C. is here to
potently cement his status as one of Europe's number one club trailblazers,
and one that knows all too well how to turn any dancefloor into an infinity
pool of pure liquid euphoria. Drawing its name from the physiological and
psychological process that results in a confusion of one's sensory
perceptions, 'Synesthesia' is indeed the kind of club single that shall
trigger off massive reaction amongst right-minded bipeds and chromakey house
suckers. Straightforward club business done right, Melja's original is a
vivid kaleidoscope of skittish drums, swampy bass stabs and a well-rounded,
supremely curvy synthwork, tailored to take ravers on a flash journey through
space and time without the help of Richard Branson or Elon Tusk (pun
intended). Called in on remix duty, TTT affiliate and Incienso co-founder
Anthony Naples delivers a more fragmented and ambientish variation, though
functional and club-ready in its own right. Brushing even wider verbed-out
pad tapestries for your brain to wander in, the track expands to deeper
organic horizons with a field-depth that can not but recall that of the KLF
and Bochum Welt's emotional soundscaping. Meanwhile, Karenn half Pariah takes
care of whelming us deep into more techno-friendly terrains, true to his ever
masterly touch for epic buildups and multi-level textural innovation,
bringing up the acidic phlegm of Melja's original as he treats us to a
carefully orchestrated ballet of synthetic whorls, contemplative chords and
propulsive drum programming |

The
Rephlex alumni and electro legend Ed Upton returns to Cold Blow with an
electro-pop maxi. As those who pay attention know very well, in the realm of
electronic dance music, DMX Krew continues to showcase an exceptional level
of musicianship. "Still Got It" is a prime example, as Upton
channels Prince's 80s electric funk classics with pop sensibilities and rich
productions. Alongside the titular vocal and dub tracks, we are treated with
an archive gem from the Rephlex era, "Paranoia", recorded around
the time of his "We Are DMX" album in 1999. The closing track,
however, is a previously released dub version borrowed from the
Japan-exclusive, CD-only 2005 album "Kiss Goodbye", which Cold Blow
has finally reissued on double LP. As the hardest-working man in the
industry, Ed hardly needs an introduction. For anyone newly discovering his
music, Ed rose to prominence with his DMX Krew guise on Aphex Twin's
legendary Rephlex Records in the 90s, where he released several albums and
singles. He also goes by EDMX among many other aliases, and runs Breakin'
Records, leaning more toward raw electro and bass. Ed tours the world
continually and runs a monthly residency at Rinse.fm. His more recent notable
releases include an EP on Peggy Gou's Gudu Records, an electro-funk remix for
Warp's LoneLady, and a solo album Party Life on Permanent Vacation |

a five year hiatus Luke Slater reanimates his L.B. Dub Corp alias for a
dynamic, vocal-led ode to the club featuring Robert Owens, Paul St. Hilaire,
Miss Kittin and more. Slater is responsible for some of the most enduring
electronic music of the past 30 years, including his grandiose ambient techno
project The 7th Plain and the trailblazing machine funk of Planetary Assault

techno tastemaker Charlotte de Witte is back with the brand new Sanctum EP

A
natural fit for the Token label and now a regular contributor, Nørbak
presents his new release 'Flauta' on the Belgian imprint. Keeping things
driving and dense, his productions boast a raw intensity, continuing to
describe spacious rooms with roaring atmospheres. The title track serves as a
firm introduction to the project; 'Flauta' is a typical Nørbak A1. Claps on
the kick, thick sound design on all levels, and tribal percussion make for an
imposing first track. Finding groove in the chaos is never difficult for the
Portuguese artist, his seamless blend of functional and mental techno make
for quite a recognizable sound with reliable effect. On the other hand, his
followup 'Despida' sharpens the tone and focuses its elements. Proving he can
do just as much damage with a more minimal approach, Nørbak drops the claps
for shakers and whips up a distorted stab as the main driver of the track.
Despite the versatility of his records, there is something very homogenous
about the tonality of his drums and synths - they seem electric, and
'Despida' truly nails that aesthetic. Moving on to the B side, we have yet
another facade of the project. While 'Golpe' has a classic foundation,
Nørbak's flamboyant sound design guides the track's arrangement, making anything
but a loop. The record's structure makes for clear accents that insist on a
pulsating atmosphere. This moves perfectly into the EP's conclusion.
'Camarada' resembles more 'Despida' in the minimal construction, retaining a
lot of the squelching lead textures. Mastering the question/answer style of
techno, Nørbak is able to capitalize on the tonality of his sonic experiments
to create swing on the dance floor. Obscure, quick, and elusive, Nørbak wraps
up 'Flauta' with restraint and efficiency |

As a self-taught musician, Jonas
Meersmans developed his own personal instrumental language on the guitar,
hovering between neoclassical layered compositions and psychedelic narrative
fingerpicking. In the past, he released two albums for acoustic guitar,
strings and horns that were warmly received by Belgian and Dutch press. Jonas
made soundtracks for several short films and theater plays, and in 2020 he
wrote the opening track for a guitar-compilation album on the American
Tompkins Square label. He also is the guitarplayer of Stef Kamil Carlens
& The Swoon and the Nicolas Mortelmans Quartet. On his new album
"Glassman", produced by Tim Vanhamel the intimate fingerpicking
expands into multi-layered and string-arranged compositions with electric

Awareness EP back in 2023, Eusebeia brings his eclectic breakbeat driven
vibes to sister label Curvature for an EP spanning a variety of energies with

miss. A1 Set In Motion: Shimmering melodic keys and light hi hats quietly
introduce Set In Motion, as Eusebeia takes a laid back opening approach to
his Curvature debut. Clean, wandering breaks enter the mix and develop
continually, as a subtly used, luscious female vocal greets the listener with
a curiously soothing vibe. Following the breakdown, a deep, pounding bassline
punctuates skillful synthwork riddled with intrigue and atmosphere to round
off a unique, eclectic track. A2 In Perpetuum: Stepping things up with a
doggedly breakbeat focus, In Perpetuum is an energetic piece with an opening
backdrop akin to an aging printer being coaxed back to life, before an echoed
vocal welcomes hyperactive, rasping breaks, edited and chopped with the
scintillating talent we have come to expect from Eusebeia. The latter half of
the track changes up the vibe slightly with inquisitive padwork gliding above
the omnipresent edits. B1 Flow State: Subtle cowbell style cymbals and gentle
melodies introduce Flow State, before an inimitable duality of old school
atmospheric breaks pass the baton repeatedly through the track in typically
impactful style from Eusebeia. The melodies and an understated bassline
wrapped around kickdrums continues through the various phrases before the
beats depart, leaving the listener to reflect on a truly captivating track
just as the title suggests. B2 The Cure For What Ails You: Reverberating
percussion and classic whale sounds instantly grasp your attention before
ominous 808 bass ushers in a thunderous helping of pure amen pleasure sent
straight from the old school - edited and programmed to perfection by
